NYMPHALIDAE A 1,000 sq. foot alpine residence that was originally inspired by the form and structure of the Greta oto (glasswing) butterfly, which belongs to the scientific family Nymphalidae.

The essence of this insect is translated through interior and exterior materials that show delicate, yet structural sophistication.

THE ROOST

An urban hotel that takes inspiration from all over the world, starting with traditional Korean and Japanese tapestries, and the birds they often portray. It then gracefully moves to other parts of the globe, such as South America and Africa, where other exotic birds can be found. The Roost’s bird motif allows for a seamless transition between multiple cultures. The branding and design for The Roost both strive to celebrate birds and nature by emulating the same tone as the traditional tapestries, while facilitating an eclectic fusion that keeps the hotel funky, edgy, and modern.

The concept for this carpet design draws from traditional Korean, Chinese, and Japanese paintings. The inspiration came from the subject matter, composition, and colors of these works. Notice the implementation of feather-like abstract designs as well as some literal interpretations of the ancient art--such as traditional Chinese window patterns and clouds. Complex layering was used to bring a modern graphic element to the design. The resulting carpet is unique, eclectic, and bold. This line was designed for the 2016 Durkan D*scover student competition using a mixture of hand and computer techniques, including watercolor, marker, ink, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign.

THE STICKS

A glamping resort in Green River, Utah. Inspiration for The Sticks draws from the indigenous petroglyphs this region is known for, and the anatomy of trout and other fishes of the area. The skeletal structures of the fish and the primitive nature of the rock art are similar in their forms and geometries.

The color scheme for The Sticks was inspired by the pigments that were used to create ancient wall art (e.g., red and yellow ochre; umber; manganese) but with a vibrant twist to break up the more natural materials and finishes used in the architecture, furniture, lighting, and accessories.

tall cans, similar to these ice tea cans mimic spray paint canisters.

many breweries are switching to cans the portability--many people even pre of canned beer.

SILENT CITY BREWERY A local brew-pub in Green River, Utah. The concept for Silent City comes from New York Graffiti, street art, and street style of the 1980s and ‘90s: what happens at night when the city is “silent” (symbolically, of course). Specific inspiration draws from famous modern artists of the time, namely Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kieth Haring--both of whom did their share of street art in New York. This concept speaks through the use of rough architecture and materials--which mimic an urban, almost industrial environment--and hip, colorful, funky furniture. The branding for the brewery references bold graffiti lettering styles. The beer is packaged in tall, aluminum cans to subtly nod to spray paint canisters, and also contribute to a casual and youthful feel.

BIOPHILIA

A hotel lobby inspired by biophilic principles. Biophilia, at its core, is a celebration of life. Life is vitality, vibrancy, and energy. A strong visual connection to that natural life is present in the space. Inspired by the vivid colors and vibrant patterns found on exotic insects, it plays on clever relationships between bright colors and graphic elements on these insects. Bugs are some of the tiniest, most ignored components of our natural world, and this space juxtaposes that concept by involving large-scale design features in bold hues. The entire lobby shouts, “notice me!

“It’s always

50

WELCOME home

s about movement... I like to tell a story.”

As I walk into the entryway, I’m greeted by a giant, 17-foot totem pole custom-created by Lionel Samuels, one of Todd’s favorite contemporary Inuit artists. The totem pole serves as a focal point for the entryway, and also sets the tone for the rest of the residence. It’s natural materials and smooth curves set the stage for the other pieces featured in the home. When designing the space, Rock wanted to capture the essence of Todd’s artwork by selecting sculptural, textural, and colorful furniture and materials. Underneath the stairs there is a vignette consisting of a small writing desk and Saarinen Executive Chair. Above the arrangement is an original black-and-white de Kooning painting. “This space is the first thing you see when you walk into the house,” says Rock. “I wanted to make it say ‘James Michael Todd’ as succinctly as possible.” And what better way to do that than by showcasing his favorite artist? Todd wanted to keep the feeling of his home casual and unassuming--a task that could cause potential difficulties given the sophisticated nature of his collections--so he and Rock decided that a desk would serve this purpose. As Todd said before, it’s all about the narrative. The desk tells the story of a low-key bachelor who’s hard at work--it also gives him a place to store his keys and mail. Casual, raw, beautiful, Todd’s entryway sets the stage for the rest of his home.

Reflecting the cool California lifestyle, this sitting area is perfect for any stylish bachelor to kick back and relax in. The Pelican Chairs, designed by Finn Juhl, are semi-moveable to accomodate the many guests he invites into his home for movie screenings. They also offer a sculptural element to the rich, natural textures of the ceramic, wood-mimicking floors and custom millwork storage pieces. “I consider myself to be both a Californian and a Canadian,” confessed the director, “so it was important to me to have both aspects represented.” This was achieved by mixing light woods with deep woods. The Laura Kirar Nogal accent tables combine sculptural, simplistic forms, as seen in Native Canadian art, with a casual walnut that reminds me of the sandy shoreline of Venice Beach itself. I mention this thought to Todd, who replies with a grin, “yes! I thought that exact thing when we selected them!” Among his vast collections of fine art, Todd boasts a large vinyl repetoir. When he’s not on set, or attending Sun Dance, he can be found DJ-ing his own parties. “The house was built in 2014 contemporary style, and, unfortunately, with very little storage,” he explains, and then adds sheepishly, “I’ve accumulated many things, so we needed to accommodate

that with custom storage solutions.” Rock solved this problem by designing custom pieces, such as the tufted leather bench in front of the window, and the large “DJ Credenza” (as she calls it) to house his music library and equipment. The speakers live in the side cabinets, and his turntables can fit on the top when in use, or tucked away behind a door in the bottom. A built-in shelf above the unit offers a resting place for his macbook. An open cubby in the center of the piece contains his favorite, and most frequently-used, albums. For records that don’t quite make the cut, there’s plenty of room under the window bench, which can seat up to four people when he’s entertaining. “So I just have to ask, being an audiophile myself,” I tell him, “what, in your opinion, is the greatest album of all time?” He cringes, “that’s such a hard question! Because you have those albums that are brilliantly constructed and have a strong concept, and you have those ones that just sound good, you know?” I do know, but I’m not letting him go without an answer. Sensing my persistence, he continues, “but I’d have to say the all-around best would probably have to be ‘Revolver.’ You just can’t go wrong with the Beatles.”

At the heart of this 2014 house lies the dining room. Rock placed it here because of Todd’s love of entertaining--she wanted the social dining area to be a central point in the house. She also wanted to create a unique division between the different seating arrangements in the house. “I wanted to take advantage of the open space plan by eliminating a traditional living room,” explains Rock. “If the main objective is to entertain, then you want a home that, as [the renowned designer] Sister Parish put it, can comfortably seat 5 or 50 people.” The best way Rock and Todd found to do this was to make the seating areas small, flexible, and distributed throughout the house, keeping the kitchen and dining area in the center. The sculptural Obssedia Dining Table from Koket, which can seat up to ten guests, along with the Phillipe Stark Masters’ Stools help bring metallic lustor to the natural woods and stones being represented in the built-in shelf over the fireplace, and the Inuit sculptures housed there. They also reference one of Todd’s favorite artists, Donald Judd, who often used copper and silver in his pieces. The Arne Jacobsen Drop Chairs, upholstered in an orange faux-leather from DesignTex add a modern-minimalist feel, also remeniscent of Donald Judd. The

entire table vignette is hosted on top of a sumptuous Jan Kath rug that looks like it could be the work of de Kooning himself--the colors are bright and seem to both stand out and blend into each other. Above the table, we find a Horizontal Prop Light from Moooi. This adds a nice juxtaposition to the beautifully sculptural shapes found in the furniture of the space; its seems almost industrial, yet it warms the space up nicely. “I was drawn to this light because it makes me feel like I’m in some kind of hip studio or gallery,” Todd admits. I take this opportunity to draw Todd’s attention back to his display above the fireplace, and ask him to tell me about the pieces there. “The painting is a Picasso, and the sculptures are all works from Canadian artists.” Todd’s Montreal herritage has given him a deep love and admiration for Canadian indiginous art, so he always makes sure to support his fellow countrymen. “I love when guests come over and they have a wealth of things to converse about,” says Todd. “Perhaps what I love most about my home is that it’s an experience; it’s like I have multiple movie-sets set up around my house, each with its own way of interracting with people. I love seeing that chemistry and interraction between my environment and my friends.”
