LOCATION Porto Alegre, Brazil
Humid Equatorial Tropical Semi-Arid Tropical Humid Coastal Humid Subtropical
Due to the varying topographical heights as well as the proximity to the coast, the climate of Brazil varies somewhat from region to region. Figure 2.50 illustrates five distinct climatic zones, which are: humid equatorial to the north; tropical, semi-arid tropical and humid coastal around the Tropic of Capricorn; and humid subtropical to the south.
Location Porto Alegre is the capital and largest city in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Founded in 1769 by Manuel Sepúlveda, its population of 1,509,939 inhabitants (2010) makes it the tenth most populous city in the country and the centre of Brazil’s fourth largest metropolitan area, with 4,405,760 inhabitants (2010). The city is the southernmost capital city of a Brazilian state.
Porto Alegre lies within the humid subtropical climatic zone. This zone refers to the areas that are just outside of the formal Tropical Zones. It is hot, but not quite as hot and humid as Tropical areas, with summer temperature rising above 32°C. Winters are mild to cool, but not cold enough for snow or frost, with mean low temperature of 10°C. Significant amounts of precipitation occur in all seasons in most areas. Most summer rainfall occurs during thunderstorms and an occasional tropical storm. The city experiences the most prominent difference among seasons and between temperature extremes among all Brazilian capitals. One reason for that is the highest latitude, which also contributes for the occurrence of 14 hours of daylight in December and 10 hours in June.
Wind Direction Predominant winds come from the South Atlantic Ocean towards the coast line of Brazil. Porto Alegre is also affected by those winds, which vary according to time of year. During March equinox the strongest winds come form ESE direction, when during the summer solstice strongest winds come from WEW. In September equinox and winter solstice the prevailing winds come from ESE direction.
