BIOGRAPHY From an early stage, I found interior design fascinating. It allows me to transform images in my mind into something tangible. The ability to convert imagination into reality intrigues me. It is something I don’t find in my other subjects though they are undoubtedly informative. After working as an interior designer, I found the fact that this industry is actually competitive and it is indeed a complicated business. My design pholosophy is to emphasize and spread the importance of green designs without losing the creativity and beauty of designs. Helping sustain the environment by letting people know why must every building should be based on eco-friendly designs.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MIXED USE BUILDING

CLINET PROFILE The National Geographic Society started in Washington DC in 1888 as a small group of travelers and their patrons in the late Victorian Age, a time when European and American explorers were finding a strong audience at home for tales of adventure and foreign cultures. Shortly after its own founding, the Society started a magazine of its own, which covered a wide variety of world cultures and natural resources, with a particular emphasis on maps and high quality photography. The Society also sponsored the work of many major scientists—Louis and Mary Leakey, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and Dian Fossey, just to name a few—and later on, provided funding for films and television shows. This dual emphasis on exploration and education has made them a

household name, and the golden border of their flagship magazine is a design icon in itself. Their strong media division, now including the NatGeo TV channel, has continued to fund a wide range of scientific and philanthropic efforts around the world. The Society currently has a little under 2000 employees in various offices.

The office is located in a building from the Soviet industrial building of the 50s to 60s of the 20th century. The structure of costate ceilings and reinforced concrete columns, ceiling height are over 13ft on the top floor with huge windows overlooking the Petrograd side. The structure of the opening spaces are perfect for the creative division of a modern, dynamic company. In terms of design aspect, the main idea is to combine the aesthetics of Bauhaus and New York loft style. To create such a space in a revolutionized architecture is to utilize the simple concise forms with minimal matreials. The main goal of the space is all about funtionality. The focal point is the central meeting room that received concise rounded shapes with glass and orange curtain, which divides the other opened-space into two wings. The upper wing is the area for graphic design department. On the opposite side is the area for IT-specialists.

DePetrus started out as ‘St. Peter ’s Church’. This church was built between 1881 and 1884 to replace St. Pieter. The latter was a little church with a straw roof, dating from the 14th century. The German architect, Carl Weber designed the church in the round Neo-Romanesque style. The rounded clover forms with an octagonal stone dome and cross arms. The murals were made by the Vught painter Charles Grips. The construction cost about 150,000 Dutch guilders at the time by the community in Vught. 1935 - Two chapels were added to the front side of the church. 1960 - The church was connected to the presbytery by an extension. 2005 - The church was no longer used for religious activities due to deferred maintenance. Dutch Government, the Province and the municipality of Vught provided two million euros for redeveloping. 2010 - The plans could not be realized financially that resulted a demolition plan. 2011 - The total of 7 entrepreneurs from Vught formed a non-profit company and became the economic owner of DePetrus. 2012 - The restoration was completed with a total of 4.4 million euros by the end of the year. 2018 - Architect Jan David Hanrath designed and renewed the interior of the church.

GLOBAL CULTURE EXPLORATION

CONTEMPORARY JEWISH MUSEUM

Although I have never learned much about Jewish culture, I know that it has always been a prominent culture and religion in and outside of the United States. The reason that I am interested in getting to know the culture is mainly because of all the movies and TV shows I watched that were related to Jewish culture. The things I know about the culture is basically a group of people live their lives in the framework of a group. The framework involves the essence of their identity, religion, community, and tradition. From my understanding, the Jewish culture seems to be consevertive and traditional that I expected to see the kind of artifacts that represent their aspect of culture. I was mostly surprised by the wide variety of emotions that was on display at the museum. It showed that inspiration could come from anything. The symbolism of all the artifacts reflect the needs and beliefs from their community in today ’s modern world. In a sense of social responsibility, they are highly attuned to the idea of being responsible to society and the world. They depute positive behavior that is a unique innovation in their legal system. This kind of message shows they are responsible for the world they live in. It also includes animals and environment. It is clear that Jewsih culture has contributed to humanity a moral vision, a blueprint for an ideal world.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The concept of "Portal" is based on the iconic logo yellow frame of National Geographic, which represents the window to the world for the knowledge of wisdom. Presidio of San Francisco provides sense of knowledge for people to explore in many different aspects. The aesthetic inspiration comes from the natural forms within the area. The movement, rhythm and harmony of trails and ocean waves. The patterns and textures of rocks, trees. Crissy Field Marsh is a famous birdwatching spot for California Brown Pelican which once the listed endangered species by the state of Califonia. The beauty of the California Brown Pelican is known for the color of brown and slight tranisition of the colored variation. Design will be focus on providing the movement with patterns and texture to define each space. To emphasize and connect more with Presidio area through the usage of the features of California natural forms.

Design Considerations The public spaces should be placed together with enough space for circulation for level one. It is important to have the store and cafe close to the lobby and exhibition space in order for vistors to have the quickest and most efficient access. Another point to focus on for the first floor is to make sure that the support area is seperated but still adjacent to the exhibition area for transporting the collections. The exhibition hall will be sound proof to make sure that visitors will not be disturbed by noise.

PRIVATE SPACES PUBLIC SPACES VERTICAL CIRCULATION CIRCULATION

For the upper level, reception and small meeting area will be semi-public. And the rest of the office spaces are private for employees. The main focus for this level is to place all working spaces in a concentrated area. This is the best way to keep teams together without distrubing the work flow and help build a healthy working enviroment. The supply room and kitchenette will also be more closed off from the rest of the office to avoid sound distractions and possible oddors. One way to avoid disturbing sounds and smells would be to place noise cancelling partitions between spaces or creating another room within a room.
