The ASPIRE Clinic at UGA Below is a video created by two of our clinic interns, Henry Sellers and Aliya Saulson, in the summer of 2016. This video illustrates the ASPIRE Clinic as a unique resource on UGA's campus as well as a one-of-a-kind clinic. Henry and Aliya chose to create this video to provide a promotional tool for the clinic as well as an informative video on ASPIRE’s inner-workings. They completed this project as part of their internship requirement for their Human Development and Family Science Bachelor’s degrees.

2016 Achievements The following highlights are some of ASPIRE’s significant accomplishments this past year.

Client Database One of our greatest accomplishments affecting our day-to-day operations is our online client database. Prior to the creation of this database in the summer of 2016, no technology was used to track client information. Through using a secure and HIPAA-compliant Google product and after diligent data input, we have established an online system to maintain client information in an easy and efficient manner. This upgrade has greatly eased the process of finding information on clients, setting up new clients, and assisting with our research data.

Paperwork Process When we launched our database in the summer of 2016, we also revamped our paperwork process for our clients. Instead of emailing paperwork that needed to be printed for the clients to complete prior to their appointment, we have established a Qualtrics link that clients use. This paperwork is now completed either via email or through a clinic iPad. This process

helps streamline data into a central location, as well as eases the client initial consultation process. It has also resulted in more on-time appointments, since the process is mostly complete prior to the clients’ arrival. 8

Research IRB and Research Team Our clinic has been working hard to establish an ongoing research study assessing the impact of a holistic environment on our clients’ wellbeing. We received IRB approval in the summer of 2016, and have been working diligently to collect data on our clients through a multitude of assessments. Additionally, an intern research team was established at the end of the year in order to focus on the study’s data input. Since

ASPIRE is the only interdisciplinary clinic of its kind, we believe that this research could be pivotal.

Waitlist Manager One of ASPIRE’s successes is our continuous demand for all of our services offered at the clinic. In the summer of 2016, a Waitlist Manager position was created from within the intern team in order to have a point person to oversee our abundant and growing waitlist. This position has helped our potential clients be attended to and set up appointments more efficiently, as well as tracking the Service Provider capacity to

take on new clients. The Waitlist Manager has created additional processes and procedures that have helped us to be a more efficient resource to our community. 9

Clinic Assistant ASPIRE is an expanding entity with more clients, Service Providers, interns, and various opportunities each semester. In order to be the most efficient resource it can be to the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, UGA, and the Athens community as a whole, a Clinic Assistant position was established. This position eases and smooths the many processes that the Clinic Coordinator oversees. Further, as a part-time paid venture, this position yields efficiency, commitment, and performance. The Clinic Assistant role was created in 2016 and filled at the beginning of 2017 with a previous clinic intern, Aliya Saulson. Aliya started interning at the clinic in January 2016 and has exhibited leadership at ASPIRE as the Social Media Manager, Waitlist Manager, and a Senior Intern. After she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Science, Aliya stayed on at ASPIRE to fill the new position. As the Clinic Assistant, she mainly supports the clinic’s day-today operations, helps to oversee and manage staff, and contributes to both established and developing projects within the clinic. Aliya values the relationships she’s made at ASPIRE, both professionally and personally, as she departs the clinic to pursue a Master’s in Social Work at the reputable Smith College. We thank her for her wonderful work and contribution!

Staff Testimonials The ASPIRE Clinic truly serves a unique purpose in the UGA and Athens community. Working in such a holistic environment is a first for me, but I am consistently gaining a clearer perspective about the benefit of helping individuals, couples, and families address life’s complexities utilizing a comprehensive approach. Although my time here at the clinic has been relatively brief, I wholeheartedly believe that some of my most impactful work as a marriage and family therapist will occur here at ASPIRE because of my ability to collaborate with professionals from other disciplines in an effort to best serve our clients. My perception has been that clients find great value and appreciation in knowing that we at ASPIRE are concerned about their whole being. Because of these rich experiences, I will be all the more competent to help people view life’s challenges through a more integrated lens that will in turn aid them in leading the more satisfying and healthier lives that they desire. -Leslie A. I started interning for UGA’s ASPIRE Clinic in May 2016. I was completing the internship to fulfill the internship requirement of my Human Development and Family Science Bachelor’s degree. My primary interest in the ASPIRE Clinic stemmed from my interest in their holistic approach to therapy and the opportunity for a practicum experience. The unique experience and the educational components are what led me to continue interning at the clinic for a second and a third semester. Unlike most internship programs, ASPIRE’s interns play an integral role in the day-to-day working of the clinic. The emphasis that is placed on the importance of an intern made me feel valued as a student. Even the mundane filing of paperwork has an educational component. As interns, we are constantly being exposed to the nuances and procedures of a clinical environment. Many of the interns plan on going into a clinical field and this internship program provides a foundation of clinical knowledge. The ASPIRE Clinic also encourages interns to take initiative and step outside of their comfort zones. During my time at the clinic, I had the opportunity to develop a promotional video that is currently on the clinic’s webpage. Video editing is something that I was not familiar with and learning a new skill was both challenging and enjoyable. Being able to observe therapy sessions as an undergraduate student is not an experience most students get to have. I’ve found the practicum experience of viewing therapy sessions to be both eye opening and highly educational. Sitting behind a one-way mirror certainly takes some getting used to, but the experiential learning has been one of the more educational parts of my undergraduate career. I am wholeheartedly convinced that this learning experience will serve me well as I transition to graduate school. One of my favorite parts of the internship program has to be the compassionate and supportive work environment that the clinic has created. The competitive nature of the internship application process ensures that ASPIRE has some of the best interns working in its front office. Being surrounded by so many high achieving individuals has pushed me to work harder and better myself. Everyone is willing to help one another work to their full potential. Working with other interns has not only provided me with a professional network, but it has also provided me with some of my closest friends. At the ASPIRE Clinic, the interns are cared about. Megan Ford, the ASPIRE Clinic Coordinator, takes the time to get to know each of the interns on a personal level and works with them to achieve both their personal and professional goals. I am confident that the time I have spent at the ASPIRE Clinic has made an impact on my life and helped me develop personally and professionally. -Henry Sellers ASPIRE Senior Intern

Vision for 2017 The ASPIRE Clinic has celebrated another great and successful year. We are so grateful for the support of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and its respective departments for their commitment to ASPIRE’s growth and impact. I am also thankful for such a wonderful staff of students and faculty that elevate the ASPIRE Clinic daily with their passion for service and desire for learning. We have an amazing team of people and the clinic would not be where it is today without such dedicated individuals. In 2017, we only hope to continue our development, as well as focus on some key initiatives to broaden our reach. The ASPIRE Clinic is working to develop more research initiatives that can produce important knowledge about interprofessional work and demonstrate the success of an integrated service environment. With that, we are currently putting together the ASPIRE Clinic Research Lab, in which both students and faculty can find innovative research opportunities. We also hope to further our interprofessional teaching efforts within the ASPIRE Clinic through all-clinic meetings as a way to share more knowledge across our disciplines and to inspire a richer experience to each student participating at the ASPIRE Clinic. The support the ASPIRE Clinic receives each year allows us to continue our unique mission and promotion of holistic wellness. As an ASPIRE ally, client, friend, or supporter, you are welcome to help fund our clinic and its operations through providing a donation. Donations help the ASPIRE Clinic to grow, expand, and continue offering our services to those who need them. If you would like to help or offer your support, please visit the ASPIRE Clinic’s website at www.aspireclinic.org, and click the red “Donate Now” button.
On behalf of the ASPIRE Clinic team, we wish you the best in 2017. Megan R. Ford
