REAL LIFE FAMILY SESSIONS
/ WHY REAL LIFE? My grandfather went in for his annual checkup and was told that his cancer (which was in remission) had unexpectedly spread to his lungs and liver. The doctors told us it was stage IV with not much that we could do to heal him. He was 93, still cross-country skied, gardened, lived by himself, and was sharp as a tack. He even practiced dentistry up until the year before but retired when he found out about the cancer. We lived almost 800 miles from him, but I wanted to make sure that I intentionally spent some quality time with him while he was still himself. I flew back to Michigan, and we spent a few afternoons together. We were chatting about his photographs from his time in the war, which prompted him to dig through his closet in search of his 16mm video camera from the ‘50s. He’s notoriously a pack rat, so it didn’t surprise me when he found it. I asked him if he had any films that we could watch. After a few minutes of shuffling through the attic, he pulled out a projector, screen, and a box of reels. We watched hours of tapes that no one in my family had ever seen before. Most of the films were from summer vacations, trips to the cottage, and holidays from the 1950s and 1960s. We even found some reels from the 1930s when my great-grandparents were vacationing through NYC. However, my favorite minutes on tape were the frames of everyday life. I wanted to see what my grandparents’ house looked like in the everyday. How had it changed? What did my dad wear as a little boy? Where did my grandmother grow up? How did my dad and his siblings interact? What were their routines? These scenes fascinated me more than vistas of Pennsylvania and perfect family photos. This is why I believe in capturing the reality of your life happening right now. It’s a time that is rarely photographed because you’re too busy living it. Your grandchildren will want to see what your everyday life is like. Your kids will want to remember how you looked day-to-day, not just when you’re dressed up in fancy clothes that you wear once a year, captured in a field that has no sentimental value. I love when a family trusts me to come into their home and document the real moments that they have with their children: the messy yogurt feedings in a high chair; the quick tears after stumbling from learning to walk; sibling love; toddler tantrums; the cuddling; the curiosity of a child... These moments are fleeting. While they may be routine happenings of the everyday, I believe that they are incredibly important to be preserved because they won't last forever. I would love to get to know your family and capture their special quirks and silly habits. Real Life Family Sessions are an all-day event. I typically request 2-5 hours of time so that I can fully capture personalities and routines. These sessions are best practiced with children 12 mos. and older. Shorter sessions can be arranged for younger children with nap times and limited attention spans.
