The site is located on a busy street in Cape Town.
To distract from the street and the noise it produces, a timber screen wall was put on the façade of the building, distracting from the streetscape but still allowing for light penetration

KHULA HOUSE
Designed as a group for the Cape Institute for Architecture (CIFA) 2022 Addressing Homelessness Student Competition
Khula (Zulu-meaning grow) House is a homeless shelter and rehabilitation centre set at the foot of a hill in Zonnebloem Cape Town The centre aims to uplift members of the community and teach them new skills as they regain stability and re-enter society
Spatial Configuration Diagrammes
The concept for this design was Growth and Development
The buildings stem off of a central courtyard as though they are growing off of it
The pathways represent the root system of the centre and leading to functions aiding in the development of visitors
Old recycled materials were used, such as tyres for retaining walls and glass bottles for light penetration and aesthetic value
These materials emphasised the theme of growth and development by giving them a new lease on life, much like we hope to achieve with the people visiting our centre.

Khula House Received an Honorable Mention at the Cape Institute for Architecture (CIFA) 2022 Addressing Homelessness Student Competition.
During the workshop we explored new mediums and had two days to create an installation.
Using rope, wire and beadwork I created an installation called ‘Out of our Depths’. It featured a series of 7 macramé jellyfish as natures defense coming at our concrete reef with a ‘sting’...
The installation is a response to the built environment and the impact thereof on the nature.
It was exhibited in the museum for 2 months alongside the work of the resident artist.
Working alongside Architecture, Fashion and Fine Art students on group projects has been an eye opening experience. I have come to realise that everyone approaches a brief differently, and there are many ways to tackle a problem.
This experience has taught me new approaches to the creative process that I hope to apply to future projects.
