Monarch Village
Au gu st 2020 - Ma y 2 0 2 1
Studio 804 is a comprehensive design-build program, focused on sustainable building solutions. Students are expected to complete a building from design through construction during a nine-month school year. This includes everything from initial design, permit submittal, estimates, material acquisition, site layout, pouring concrete, landscape and more, all done out of our 64,000 sq ft warehouse. Every aspect is completed by students with the goal of synthesizing our architectural education. For the 25th year of the program our class of 18 students is working with the Lawrence Community Shelter to construct 12 tiny homes to create the Monarch Village. These homes will be used as transitional housing for the guests of the shelter and will feature solar panels, custom furniture and cabinetry as well as a community garden and gathering space. We are hoping this will be 804’s 15th LEED Platinum project. 7
S I T E WO R K The village is located in East Lawrence on a lot south of the community shelter. There are 12 containers divided into duplexes that are oriented east and south of the sites existing garden. With existing parking to the west and east we laid out and poured side walks throughout the site as well as patio slabs in between each duplex and a slab for the common area. Each duplex has a canopy over the patios and ivy covered screens on each end of the duplex to provide shade.

COUNTER TOPS
Though I have worked on nearly everything throughout the year, the tasks I had a major role counter tops, and wall finishes. Beginning in September with deciding what materials we wo not only fit with our design choices but meet our high standards for efficiency and environm the materials were acquired, mostly through donations, it was time to begin with detail draw instillation. For counter tops, this was cutting the counters in the bathroom and kitchen alon shelves, then sanding, finishing and securing everything together. The insulation consisted o to fit in between each stud and cut out for electrical conduit and boxes, then using spray foa and covering everything with a vapor barrier for the final seal. The wall finishes are plywood room and melamine in the bathroom. Because of size constraints the material could only be to be fire rated. Once the wall panels were installed we moved onto trimming out the ceilings windows to bring together the interior. 16

A site on the University of Kansas Campus located south of Watson Library, our class was tasked with designing and constructing an outdoor classroom to serve the Environmental Studies Program. Our class designed and built seating, a pavilion and poured concrete across the site. From fundraising the entire project to designing and building every aspect, we were met with challenges throughout the entire process. By learning to overcome obstacles big and small in the end we were able to create a beautiful addition to campus.

S EATI N G For the seating it was important that we created an organic shape that would fit into the landscape. First, we made a shape that would interfere the least with the natural environment and leave open space for a multi-purpose classroom that could adapt for different uses. We then created shape with concrete then using wire mesh filled the seating with rock. Next, creating the steel form that attached to the wire mesh which we then secured the concrete seat tops to.

The purpose of this site is for the Environmental Studies program to use the classroom to learn about the natural prairie surrounding our site. We wanted the focus from the site to be to the south-west to look out on the prairie and the sun setting over the hill. We used our concrete layout as to direct the eye to the point of focus while incorporating the main color on our campus, terracotta. We also used these angles to design the pavilion that pulls the lines into our focus point.

R av e n R id e r s B ik e s hop J an u ar y 2019 Over winter break 2019, 9 other students and I went to East Palo Alto, California to volunteer for a not-for-profit, Live in Peace, to build out a bike shop for the kids in the community. Starting with a blank warehouse space, we were able to transform the space by creating a logo and brand for the program, build work tables, and teach the children and other community members how to design their own custom scraper bikes.
