“What we know from lab studies is that it’s never too late to break a habit. Habits are malleable throughout your entire life.”

-Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit

project brief

In this project you will design a mobile app that encourages users to make changes in their life. Your app should focus on helping someone make a new habit, or break an unwanted one. Your topic should be one particular habit and not habits in general. Your design decisions should be grounded in empathy, user research, and insights from testing your prototype. The final deliverable will be a video that explains the app.

habit research

WHAT IT IS • Habits are just routines of behavior in people’s lives • Habit is a simple form of learning—a change of behaviour with experience • It is defined as ‘an automatic response to a specific situation, acquired normally as a result of repetition and learning’. • The term habit is strictly applicable only to motor responses, but often applied more widely to habits of thought, perhaps more correctly termed attitudes. • Habits play important role in our daily life. All of us acquire different habits. FACTS • It takes about 66 days to develop a habit • There are bad and good habits • There is a way to get rid of unwanted habits, remove the thing that triggers the habit • Habits can be broken down into three categories; motor habits, intellectual habits and habits of character • Good habits formed at youth make a big difference • Bad habits are often caused by stress and boredom but can also be from deeper issues 7 MOST COMMON HABITS 1. Nail biting 2. Playing with hair 3. Using umm and like frequently in speech 4. Snacking late at night 5. Avoiding eye contact 6. Skipping breakfast 7. Cracking joints

user survey results

88 RESPONSES • 74.7% were 18-24 years old • Habit was described as a repeated or ritual-like behavior that is often mindless • Main good habits listed included -Shower/Hygiene -Brush Teeth/Floss -Exercise daily -Wearing a seatbelt -Doing Homework/Studying -Getting enough sleep -Following a good diet -Go to church regularly -Tidy lifestyle -Maintaining social life -Having manners -Staying organized -Drink water

• The bad habits listed by the survey takers were all across the board but most were stress related or coping mechanisms • 51.1% would rather start a new habit than break an old one • The results show that it is slightly easier to start a new habit than break an old one

16

• Good habits people mainly wish they had: -exercise more -better eating habits -Daily care (flossing, washing face) -Sleeping habits -Time management • Lack of motivation is the hardest place of starting a new habit according to the results • People would rather go cold turkey as the results show • Environments strongly affect your habits according to the survey results • The results show that people aren’t sure if they would use an app, but are more open to it than opposed • Visually charting your progress was the most important as well as incentives and rewards, deadlines and notifications in motivating a change in habit as the results show

user interview

NICOLE ARMSWOOD Age 20 • Habits she possesses

-Eats a veggie every day -Call mom every day -Brush teeth after every meal -drink coffee -Cheek chewing -Uses a planner for everything -Chapstick every night -Always early -Goes to bed early -Eats healthy -Watches a show before bed -Checks social media before bed -Makes bed every morning -Clean phone everyday -Listens to music -Talks loud when nervous -Can’t have awkward silences -bites nails -Wears black clothing -Being interested in tall guys -No moderation/overdoing everything

• Some habits are hard to break since some are a part of you and make you who you are

• Get habits from people you’re around ex: going to bed early comes from her parents and she was raised eating healthy foods

• She wishes she didn’t have nervous habits like biting nails and cheek chewing • Other people’s habits annoy her • It only takes a couple times to develop a habit • Healthy habits are beneficial • Always fall back into habits when she tries to change • She wishes she didn’t have to overeat or go to bed early • Habits could be a deal breaker

user stories

User StoryFormat: As a, I want to, So that. (User, do this, achieve that) “Jobs To Be Done” Format: When, I want, So that, (Situation, motivation, expected outcome)

• When I’m doing my laundry and start working on something else, I want to be alarmed that my loads are done, so that I don’t forget to come back. • When I’m doing multiple loads, I want to keep track of all the loads start and end time, so that I don’t forget any loads and get it done in an organized fashion.

MY USER STORIES AND “JOBS TO BE DONE” • As a student, I want to keep up with my laundry, so that I don’t run out of clean clothes.

• When I’m sorting my laundry into the washer and dryer, I want to be knowledgeable on how to wash them and what the symbols mean on the labels, so that I don’t ruin any clothes.

• As a roommate, I want to remember my laundry, so that I don’t keep my roommates from doing theirs.

• When my laundry starts getting full, I want to be reminded that it’s time to do laundry, so that I’m motivated and get into the routine of doing it weekly.

• As a home-owner, I want to do my laundry weekly, so that I can keep my space clean and avoid dirty piles of laundry. • As a mom, I want to keep track of all my laundry, so that I can get it done faster. • As a first-time laundry-doer, I want to learn what the washing/drying symbols mean, so that I can clean my clothes correctly. • When I’m washing and drying my clothes, I want to be able to keep track of the time, so that I don’t forget and end up taking twice the time to finish.

3. concept OVERARCHING IDEA

20

-

concept

1. What is the intention of this app?

To make laundry more enjoyable and done in an efficient and timely manner.

2. Why did you choose this intention for your app? Because I personally always forget about my loads of laundry, so it takes a long time to get through all of it. This makes doing laundry dreadful and something I need a system down for.

3. Who are you designing for?

Mostly students who are first starting out doing laundry and don’t exactly have a system or know how to do it well.

4. What challenges do your users face?

They face the challenge of keeping track of their laundry and the larger task of actually getting the motivation to go do their laundry.

5. Does this app benefit from social collaboration or sharing? No, I think it is more of a personal app to assist people with a task and create a personalized habit.

6. What is the competitive landscape?

There are apps that have you allows you to scan and identify laundry symbols and then also some laundry timer apps. But none of them make it into an entire laundry day with reminders, alarms and information and tips.

7. What unique features set your app apart from others? -reminders of designated laundry day -allows you to set alarms for washing and drying cycles on one or multiple machines -provides tips and information on washing and drying symbols to assist you while you wash

8. What other solutions exist for the problem you are addressing?

A laundry service app where you don’t even have to think about laundry.

9. How will your app be successful in changing the user's behavior?

It will get them in a well running routine when they can manage their time well and have cleans clothes every week.

10. How often do you expect users to engage with the app in order for it to be successful? Once a week for a long period of time but some people like doing a load a day so it could be once a day.

11. Does your app integrate with other apps or services?

No but maybe eventually it could go with a laundry basket the detects when it’s time to do laundry.

12. What kinds of data will be collected about the user?

I would want to know their laundry habits, what problems they have with it and what would motivate them to do it in a timely fashion.

13. What voice or personality does the app use? It’ll hopefully be fun and simple. It needs to be both engaging and easy to use while making laundry easier to do.

14. What platform are you designing for? IOS

15. List 10 possible names for your app.

Dirty Laundry, Laundry Day, Wash and Dry, Cycles, Wishy Washy, W.D.F. (Wash. Dry. Fold.), The Laundry Room, Suds, Laundry Time, Loads
