How does your media product represent particular Social Groups?
My music magazine is addressed to Indie teenagers aged 15-19. To portray the image of fashion and music simultaneously I have inserted a series of females in suitable attire to portray this. To show the transition into adulthood and therefore maturity the models are all posing in a mature way and all sporting make up. Using all female models throughout the magazine strongly emphasises femininity and therefore the primary gender audience for this magazine. When taking the photographs of the models I had to keep in mind gesture, pose, lighting, facial expressions and lighting in order for them to all be suitable for the magazine. For my mise-en-scene on the front cover I wanted a punchy image so I positioned her in a hand-on-hips stance and made sure she wasn’t smiling too much. I did this because I wanted to portray power despite being female and the slightly low shot emphasises dominance. To add to the ‘tough’ look she dressed in black and leather to detract away from the typical femininity that isn’t linked to Indie themes very well. Because my audience is heavily female based I have ensured to keep the language, images and themes relevant to them. As pictured above, the colours worn and favoured by the Indie population are earthy tones with patterns. To accommodate I have included patterns structurally throughout and based my colour scheme on similar tones. I have took to the assumption that my audience are into the festival scene (which Indie teen’s are) and as a result have featured festival coverage on the front page. I did this because it is an interest that may encourage them to buy the magazine if they couldn’t be there themselves. Females ages 15-19 are usually interested in music, artists, social media and fashion and so I have tied in these elements throughout through features such as web addresses, shop voucher prizes and album previews.
