ARCHITECTUR
3 LAKE SUPERIOR RESIDENCE
st u d ies fo r a n i n t i m a t e esca p e on the edg e
Built as a year-round retreat, the house is balanced upon a rocky
south and west. Narrow exposed architectural concrete pier foundations
outcropping between two sandy beaches along a half-mile of Michigan’s
support the structure, recalling the rigorous structural repetition of the
rugged Upper Peninsula coastline overlooking Lake Superior. The
Lower Harbor Ore Dock only 6 nautical miles away. A simple pallet of
adjacency of the lake dictates the region’s climate; heavy lake-effect
materials echoes the industrial heritage and natural beauty of the Upper
snow, and severe winter winds; summer temperatures average 70°F,
Peninsula. Subtle shifts in the plan geometry align the homes interiors
and rarely exceed 90° F. The home is situated atop a sheltered rocky
to best capture the sites natural beauty. The stone-clad garage anchors
point, chosen to provide panoramic views of the lake horizon to the
the cantilevered glass and stained-wood clad public and private spaces
