Urban Windows. Food Building DESIGN STUDIO TYPE : URBAN BUILDING T I M E L I N E : G R A D U AT E D E S I G N S T U D I O - FA L L 2 0 1 6 L O C A T I O N : U C B E R K E L E Y, C A .

CONCEPT: The design started with the idea of having a visual connection within the building focusing on the sky green farms being visible from every space. Throughout the semester the project had gone through many iterations and ended up with the concept of having a ‘Courtyard’, which contributes to the verticality of the building and spreads across the project maintaining a horizontal connection to the Urban Landscape through ‘Urban Windows’ The entire ground floor of the project is designed to be open to the street spreading its way across the city landscape. The act of food consuming is playfully designed from the streets- into the building – through the courtyard – through urban windows or through sky green farms at some spaces – into the city. This whole cycle is strategically considered and maintained throughout the design process. Materials play an important role in this project harmonizing the exterior façade. Starting with the tough concrete from the bottom to frosted channeled glass at the top dramatizes the placement of the farms at the top floor dispelling into the sky. Introducing the subtle wooden screen in between them stiches them together seamlessly. With the introduction of these materials, the project took a drastic lift focusing on the balancing act between the spatial, material and executional aspect of the project.

865 DOORS. Framed Transitions

THESIS PROJECT TYPE:STUDIO DEISGN PROJECT T I M E L I N E : G R A D U AT E T H E S I S S T U D I O = S P R I N G 2 0 1 7 L O C A T I O N : U C B E R K E L E Y, C A .

CONCEPT: We step into a space through a door and that moment of transition happens within seconds and has always been neglected. It gets subconsciously registered in our minds that we are about to make a transition before crossing that ‘in between’ space. . This highly specific moment, though brief, is architectural significant and has yet to be explored fully within the discipline. “865 Doors” is an architectural exploration of the spatial possibilities inherent in a series of doors that simultaneously obstruct and invite. What happens when doors and thresholds are the guiding factors in a design? It has always been a consequence for an architect but what if it is the main focus of the project? And this project tries to answer this question to a certain point. Every door has a way of hinting what lies beyond, directly or ambiguously. They literally and figuratively frame the context of the spaces we inhabit. The intention of this project is to elevate the awareness of a door through a series of subtle yet impactful transitions. For example, As we walk through a series of spaces connect together, we always imagine our self passing through an emphilade , but within that emphilade, if we introduce other parameters like a wall thickness, door swing, door width, door height and door type, we will now start to experience a completely different space. And that is what I am interested in and that is what this project is all about.

FACTORS EFFECTING A DOOR:

TRANSITIONS

BARRIERS

THRESHOLD

It can happen in many ways- could be a step away, could be at a distance, could take place in a second or may even take several minutes and every building is designed to create these transitional moments. And doors are the sole elements through which major transitions

Barriers create an ownership between spaces and help keep them apart while doors allow us to step back and be aware of the space beyond inviting us to either pass through or even some-

It can be defined as a space between spaces‘an in-between space’ or ‘a third space’, which marks our beginnings and our ends. They divide up the space punctuating our movements

times informing us to keep out.

and framing the transitions within its geometry.

happen.

As a starting point, I designed a space completely based on the way doors are arranged with respect to its positions, frame, swing condition etc. Establishing a visual Datum - Bringing in exterior landscape into the space by delaying the transition with an addition of a door at the center.

The axis breaks free - Creating a seamless transition from interior to the exterior by using a frameless glass door. This is exaggerated with the use of a framed glass sliding doorbehind.

Progress to a goal - Layering the courtyard entryway through a framed openning into a double height foldable door.

Drawing you forward - designing different kind of frames in order to create a continuos surface or even in some cases (#7) adding a breather space within a threshold.

CONCEPT: The main intension of this project was to pull landscape into the building and make it an open structure respecting the existing architectural symmetry. In order to achieve this, Green pockets were introduced outside the existing building as the continuity to the exterior landscape and also introducing it to the scenic vistas all around by using the existing topography of the site.

CONCEPT: The project started with exploring the structure of a regular oxford T-shirt and by manipulating its form. Through this process, the basic concept of ‘conNECtions’ evolved- ‘A conNECtion at one point usually has a bigger impact on its surroundings swaying the spaces/ pieces around and making it look as a whole.’ Continuing on this concept, the project has undergone numerous iterations in terms of space and form resulting in a generic architectural formula at the end which explains the character of a simple connection that helps in transforming a space reacting to the context and user needs.

SITE: Sunnyvale baylands.

Experimenting with form / materials and an attempt to integrate the technical and malleable character of the site .

Understanding the link between the program, structure, form and the two dimensional analysis using different materials

Refining spaces and the connections between them.

Treating the site as the breadboard, which encourages the connection between the modules and to react with the rising sea level, the project has been divided into two main structures- the permanent and the temporary. The connections between these modules are defined by a plugin system that allows the modules to react to the changing urban settings.

When we connect spaces together, it alters and molds as per the context in spite of having a specific function attached to it. The irregular stacking of the module creates an opportunity for more development, due to a specific connection of a specific module; a new space is born within, which helps to encourage more connections in future and resulting in more active spaces.

“Let’s go to a place which is more open..” , “Oh wow that place with trees around looks interesting…” “Outdoor seating please!!!!” “It’s too sunny out here…” Gone those days where everything has to be closed/indoor and heavily ornamented. Especially when it comes to a friendly hangout spots, people are leaning more towards outdoor spaces or spaces which are more connected to the nature – “Inside out spaces”.

CONCEPT: We often say Nature and Architecture compliment each other but yet we, architects always tend to use “Trees” as an ornamental piece in a render or as an urban requirement along the walkways. I wanted to use them as the core element in my design. But having too many trees will create confusion, so I have decide to use them as “WAY FINDERS” by placing them in the most active areas and allowing to guide people and also as a “screen/shield” which helps in providing right amount of privacy and shade when needed.

India’s heritage does not confine to historic accounts of the events and objects frozen in their own time and space, but rather as cultural and architectural traditions which have transcended the time and space to remain alive even in the present. Dance and Architecture lay claim to a shared vocabulary likely because they also share something immediately apparent - space. Dancing bodies and the architectural built environment manipulate space which is not only physical, for there is more to it than we see in its physicality.

CONCEPT: My intention was to create spaces which are interlinked with each other without disturbing the privacy. It could be done by using traditional elements like courtyards, pergola spaces, arches etc. Use of these elements would add historical charactor to the space and also have the tendency to change its function in the presence of light.

India is famous for its history, art, handicrafts, temple/fort architecture etc. I always admired and got inspired by them throughout my undergrad school. I was lucky to have my first client in my professional career to be an art lover as well. The design reflected her character from the exterior covered terraces to the interior screens.

CONCEPT: The concept throughout the design process was to maintain the Indian character and feel in the house at the same time making use of modern technology and materials. The site being on a hill, rear side of the house where all the bed rooms and the living space is located has a completely unobstructed view of the city. Working on intricate details like window jali patterns, indirect sunlight into the spaces through slits and skylights, detailing of the exterior columns in order to match with the traditional Indian columns near the pool area etc. had made the project even more challenging and exciting.

Marigold by Greenpark is a chain of business hotels in South India. The client being an art lover, some specific details were asked to implement into the design which created a challenging situation throughout the design process. The requirement was to implement Indian traditional elements within the design. As a result, the major spaces in the project like the coffee shop, banquet halls, restaurant, lounge etc. were designed accordingly. Intricate details of the project right from the screens to the table cloth design was meticulously worked on.

CONCEPT: The main idea was to introduce Indian art and handicrafts onto the exterior as well as interior surfaces. Use of huge jaali screens (inspired from the traditional old forts of Rajasthan) near the coffee shop area, use of peacock color palettes and motifs in banquet hall , use of wood within the ceiling , flooring as well as the walls in some places helped in achieving ‘Indian-ness’ within the building INVOLVED IN: Part of the core designing team and worked on conceptual design, design development, working drawings, site supervision, co-ordination of services and material selection.
