PERSONAL VOICE My name is Meghan Craig, and although I was born in Carson City, Nevada, I was raised in Zambia, Africa. I am extremely blessed to have had such a diverse upbringing with many different opportunities relating to travel experiences, education, and social networks. My interest in Architecture began when my parents designed and built our family home in Zambia. I was a part of the whole design process, and on site much of the time. I found it fascinating; the process of an idea becoming a reality. Since then my interest in design has focused on addressing the needs of the people who use a space; the social interactions and personal experiences a place can provide. My professional experience in the field of Architecture began in 2006 when I was hired by a realty and construction company as a draftsman. I then worked for a small architectural firm in Carson City in 2007, before moving to Moscow, Idaho, for university. On summer break in 2011 I worked for the Carson City Planning Division as an intern. I then completed a ten month internship at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), in Pullman, Washington, where I was a member of the Property Management Group, working under the direction of an architect. Summer 2013 I traveled to the United Kingdom where I was able to visit firms and shadow several designers. Most recently I relocated to

Bloomington, Illinois where I interned with the Facilities Management - Design Services team for State Farm Insurance. One of my passions is to travel! Travel has influenced my design work by allowing me to notice the way people from different cultures interact with their surroundings; specifically with buildings. I moved to America in the summer of 2004 to attend high school, and chose to further my education at the University of Idaho studying Architecture. Since coming to America, I have travelled to Northern Ireland and Hong Kong to visit family. I have been to India where I experienced the awe-inspiring Taj Mahal. In the summer of 2010 I traveled to Panama with Global Architecture Brigades (GAB) to work on a project that included building crop storage facilities and shelters. In 2012, I travelled to Italy with the Architecture department at the University of Idaho, and in 2013 I traveled throughout the United Kingdom for a similar study abroad summer course. I have always been passionate about my education and I am extremely motivated to succeed and pursue my dreams with great drive.

FIRE STATION 5 [Boise, Idaho] [Goals]

[Location]

Fire station 5 was designed to be placed on the existing Fire Station 5 site, in Boise, Idaho. The goal of the design layout was to create a structure that encourages interaction between the COMMUNITY and the fire station personnel as well as to create a tighter knit fire worker community within the complex. A goal was also to reduce the heat island effect, through the use of PERMEABLE PAVERS, found in many urban fabric environments, caused by large paved surfaces, and to take advantage of DAY LIGHTING options while preventing uncomfortable heat gain situations.

VIEW POINT COMPLEX [Ketchum, Idaho]

This affordable housing complex is located in Ketchum, ID, a ski community. It is designed, predominantly, to provide a place for seasonal staff members to reside. Several human behaviors have been incorporated into the design. As the courtyard is entered there are several possibilities to INTERACT with neighbors: by the mailboxes and up the central stair case. The bike rack encourages HEALTH. The cafe acts as a CENTRAL LANDMARK or meeting place.

INTERSECTION POINTE [Carson City, Nevada]

With these facts in mind the designed area works to propose ideas to increase the density of the downtown core in an attempt to also increase the city’s economic stature and community stability. To create this kind of new environment, illustrated are three city blocks where a gradient of intimacy is introduced. This atmosphere is created through the inner pedestrian path, with the main goal of creating a more urbanized feeling. The main design block is a mixed use structure that ensures activity at all times of the day with typical daytime business, evening business and residential units for a variety of people groups.

Carson City, the capitol of Nevada, is a small town with a population of approximately 55,000. Carson City’s economy has been turbulent since its start in 1864. Its most recent down turn came in the form of the 2008 recession. The city was defeated predominantly due to the housing crash, the decline of industry, and the reduction in government services and jobs. The biennial legislative session does not provide a stable enough economy for the city to strengthen and with the small population and lack of diversity Carson City does not spark interest in possible developers.

LOMA BONITA FARM - DESIGN BUILD [El Cope, Panama]

Granja de Loma Bonita is a small farm located in El Cope, Panama. A group of architecture students from the University of Idaho traveled to the farm to DESIGN AND BUILD a community housing project. There were two trips. The first was used to analyze the site and PROBLEMS were identified. The team then brainstormed several sustainable design SOLUTIONS. On the second trip, the one I participated in, the team built the design. The pictures show the construction process taken. The experience as a whole was very EDUCATIONAL in that we were able to work through design flaws on site and understand concepts we might not have thought of in a studio setting.

18

PICNIC SHELTER - DESIGN BUILD [Troy, Idaho]

New World Design Build (NWDB) is a club I helped start in the 2011-2012 school year on the University of Idaho campus. This picnic shelter is the first large project we tackled. The picnic shelter is located on the Latah Trail, about a mile out of Troy, Idaho, going towards Kendrick, Idaho. It was an extremely EDUCATIONAL and TEAM BUILDING experience. It was great to do this kind of project for our community.

STATE FARM INSURANCE [Bloomington, Illinois]

Bloomington, Illinois is the corporate headquarters location for State Farm Insurance. Every year they hire two-hundred interns from across the United States, to fill temporary summer positions. There are positions made available in many different departments. In the summer of 2014, I was awarded the only design services internship. For eleven weeks I worked on several projects with a team of architects, interior designers, designers, landscape architects, and construction specialists. The city of Bloomington is closely connected with another town, Normal. To locals, the area is referred to as BloomingtonNormal, Bloomington is Downtown and Normal is Uptown. A goal of mine was to interact with the Bloomington-Normal community in as many different ways as possible. In order to accomplish this I rode the local bus lines, I ate at almost every restaurant Downtown, and after work often went Uptown to sit in a coffee shop and do some personal work. I participated in community events like the farmers market, and Lincoln Festival. I also took part in community art classes put on by one of the Downtown businesses. I believe, in order to make a better community by design you have to be an active participant of the community. I enjoyed getting to know the Bloomington-Normal community, while honing my professional skills with the State Farm team. The work scope covered: programming, site analysis, material specification research, building code research, schematic design, and project cost and feasibility. I also participated in weekly construction meetings, a pre bid and pre construction. 22

DK MULLIN ARCHITECTS

[Moscow, ID] Moscow, Idaho is a relatively small town in the Pacific North West. It is the home to the University of Idaho, where I attended school for approximately six years. I received my Bachelors of Science in Architecture with a Minor in Interior Design, Bioregional Planning and Community Design Academic Certificate, and Masters of Architecture degree from the University of Idaho. During my last year of school I started working for DK Mullin Architects as a part time employee and upon graduation started working full time. While DK Mullin takes on a variety of projects ranging from cafes, restaurants and a variety of retail the majority of the firms work is generated from a corporate account with Planet Fitness. During my time at DK Mullin I worked on approximately twenty different clubs. Most Planet Fitness Clubs DK Mullin works on are tenant improvements, but there is the occasional group up project. Even though the work is largely similar there is variety in the preferences of each franchisee owner. These preferences differ in the form of paint colours, wall covering types, workout room organization, the addition of eyebrow and gear soffits, railing types, and interior partition types. I enjoyed my time in Moscow, going to school and working. The community is one that knows and cares for each other. This can be seen by the strangers conversing who’s children are playing together in Friendship Square, and by the mail man who cheerfully greets us when he drops off the mail. I have learned a lot but look forward to continuing my adventure. 26

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS: As stated in the firm summary DK Mullin works extensively on Planet Fitness tenant improvement projects. I have worked on every sheet in the organization of a drawing set at DK Mullin. These sheets include the Title sheet, Demolition, Egress, Floor Plan, Enlarged Locker Room Plan, Floor Finish, Reflected Ceiling Plan, Equipment Plan, Elevations, and Detail sheets. The next few pages are sheets I have completed that reflect my ability to accurately represent spaces that can easily be understood in the field. The following sheets represented are the Title (T1.0), Egress (EG1.0) and Floor Finish Plan (A1.2) for a PF Club in Rosenberg, TX. SCOPE OF WORK General Notes
