MEGHNA

Namaste! My name is Meghna and I study Architecture in School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal, India, currently in my fourth year out of the five-year major. Architecture is a multi disciplinary domain that integrates almost every aspect of human life and the world. It has opened doors to a new realm of creativity and innovation for me. I am exploring architecture as a visual art form to make people feel beyond what they see. I am doing all I can to become an architect that hopefully succeeds at leaving a positive change in people’s lives and communities. Here is a compilation of my journey till now as an architect. Every project here has a story to tell and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Thankyou!

Heal+ Regenrative Housing for Kerela floods UNI First Position (Student + Professional) Urban Design 5 Aluva, Kerela, India 10.1004° N, 76.3570° E : February, 2019

Project Task: The design brief required us to propose a ‘community housing’ that is scalable, heals when damaged and regenerates faster than before when broken down. The task was to build unit micro-neighborhood for 100 families, with a case of use Westablished in Aluva which has a peri urban context.

Concept Tranquil Interdependent Multifuncional Environment An interdependent system with incremental measures at various levels starting right from immediate collective cleaning in the vicinity to rebuilding, retrofitting existing homes cohesively. It accepts floods as a part of life, but also understands that flood can’t be tackled alone It creates a linked chain of ladders leading to refuge spaces during the water Surge. The unified refuge space creates an Wambient milieu calming and healing during the catastrophe period. This OHT is multifunctional in nature . In regular Days, it acts an overhead tank with the various levels sereving as community space. These community spaces can be used to hold festivals or as skill development centers. Learning skills like palm, coir weaving collectively cant engage people in refuge and not grieve over the loss. The organic vegetable garden conducted at community level to indulge in productive activities and bond over collective farms. This initiative helps in reducing the dependency on external factors and thus gaining confidence.

During water surge, an interlinked system of ladders is used where in order to reach the refuge space (O.H.T.)each household would interact and pool in their resources with other households to help each other escape. These households further form connections through intermediate nodes in form of Macchans located in closer proximity to the refuge space.

Tranquil-Interdependent-Multifunctional- Environment

Tranquil-Interdependent-Multifunctional- Environment The working of this system as a whole Habitat when tarnished disrupts lifestyle causing emotional, mental and financial losses which creates scars forever. So, it is necessary to heal from the beginning by converting the exhausting period of struggle into a motivating environment to interact with their neighbours. Our system intents to unite the community by various incremental measure at different levels. The graphic symbolises multi-level interventions starting right from immediate collective cleaning in the vicinity to rebuilding, retrofitting existing homes cohesively. It accepts floods as a part of life, but also understands that flood can’t be tackled alone. It creates a linked chain of ladders leading to refuge spaces during the water surge. The system realises the role of livestock in people’s lifestyle and makes provision in protecting them. The unified refuge space creates an ambient milieu calming and healing during the catastrophe period. It depicts abundance of green space; a mimesis of the organic vegetable garden conducted at community level to indulge in productive activities and bond over collective farms. This initiative helps in reducing the dependency on external factors and thus gaining confidence. Its upside down visual shows the multifunctional nature of the refuge spaces. In regular Days, it acts as an overhead tank with the various levels serving as community space. These community spaces can be used to hold festivals or as skill development centres. Learning skills like palm, coir weaving collectively can engage people in refuge and not grieve over the loss. This Graphic Summerizes a ‘Tranquil-Interdependent-MultifunctionalEnvironment’ that heals the tarnished habitat of Kerala.

: Reimagining derelict spaces into valuable Resource, A Landscape Approach : Mohammad Shaheer Landscape Trophy : First Position : Urban Design : 3 : Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India 22.7375° N, 75.8759° E : January, 2019

Project Task: The design intent is to transform marginalized places into healthy and meaningful environments for everyone to participate in and benefit from taking an untraversed approach.

Concept Can you find a unifying language that cuts across age and income and culture, that will help people think differently , look at spaces around them differently, find an untraversed way of living ? Yes, the Answer is FOOD. Malwa Textile Mill (an ignored industrial heritage) which has turned into a derelict in the past few decades,is situated at the heart of Indore in an area which doesn’t have any community space in it. Our proposal deals with the conversion of this land from a plight to a productive landscape. by proposing an Urban Community Edible Garden. The proposal is to create a community platform and a supportive framework which the people can use to help themselves, take personal responsibility and invest in kindness to eachother and to the environment. A space which brings the idea of food sites at the heart of the city, not relegate them to the edges of the settlement where nobody can see them, farm for every body to share and pick from. further alliviating this ignored industrial heritage and giving meaning to it again.

“The roots of textile business in Indore takes birth from the time when the historic 11 mills were up and running which now silently expresses their grief of a lost exsistance

A company from Bombay established the Malwa United Mills Ltd. in 1909, Hukum Chand Mills in 1916, Swadeshi Cotton and Flour Mill in 1921, Kalyanmal Mill in 1923, Rajkumar Mills in 1924 and Nandlal Bhandari Mill in 1925. With the establishment of these mills Indore accquired the status of one of the premier textile centers of India. The mills gave employement to largest number of workers, setting up a huge community around the 7 mills. Though the curtains have been brought down for Indore Malwa United Mills and other cotton mills in Indore, yet it is irrelevant in many aspects- its location in the city, its undeniable contribution in development of the city and the fact that it is one of the few remnants of its own kind on the whole city fabric.

: Understanding principles of Vernacular Architecture through documentation. : Design Studio, Academics : Documentation, Academics : 7 : Mangan, Sikkim, India 27.4979° N, 88.5348° E : January, 2017

Project Task: The design intent is to transform marginalized places into healthy and meaningful environments for everyone to participate in and benefit from taking an untraversed approach.

Concept Vernacular architecture portrays an unbreakable bond between the people and place. It responds to many aspects like climate, places, culture, use of locally available materials and local skills that developed over the years through hit and trial. We tried to capture the essence of vernacular architecture by indepth study, documentation and analysis of the ‘Lepcha’ community. The Lepchas or the Rongs, are the indigenious tribe of Dzongu Valley, which is a triangular region in North Sikkim, India. The settlement is bounded by the Teesta river In the South-East, Tholung Chu River in the North-East and mountains in the West. The main focus area will be Mangan, a town on the edge of Dzongu.Which belongs to cold climatic region. Lepchas have a rich culture and a strong traditional knowledge system. The tribe is influenced by Buddhism and this is reflected in the designing of their spaces.
