BORDERLANDS SUPERVISOR: EMMA JACKSON YEAR/LEVEL: THESIS PROJECT SOFTWARE: RHINO, ENSCAPE A boundary line is defined as confining a whole urbanised area and is used by local governments as a guide for zoning and land occupation. It marks the place where a suburb ends and another territory begins; until a wall or fence is erected, they are invisible. This proposition questions the legibility of the boundary line. Can we visualise these fringes and experience it at a personal scale? My site is located on the corner of 334 – 336 Bell and Sussex Street, which occupies a Hungry Jack’s and a Shell Service Station. Both hold a different postcode despite being on the same block, one being Pascoe Vale and the other being Coburg respectively. This uncommon urban phenomenon made me question the possibilities of capitalising on the behaviours found in plants to overwrite the existing planning logic of the boundary. Borderlands is a multi-functional rest stop that attempts at stitching two suburbs undefined boundary. It performs as a protype of urban infill and acts as an architectural instrument of access to unlock the culture identity of the suburb.
POROUS STRATUM STUDIO LEADER: PATRICK MACASAET YEAR/LEVEL: MASTER FIRST YEAR, SEM 1 SOFTWARE: REVIT, RHINO, ENSCAPE, PREMIERE PRO Porous Stratum is a design that facilitates a flow between environment, people and architecture, enabling architecture as a process of exchange. It highlights a porous vessel that accommodates the spilling forth of human activities, the opportunities to watch and to be watched. It is a production of an urban learning village, creating spaces that allow the civic to mingle, delight and wonder as well as authenticate the build form in which it is experienced.

THE OTHER HOME STUDIO LEADER: PETER BREW YEAR/LEVEL: MASTER SECOND YEAR, SEM 1 SOFTWARE: RHINO, ENSCAPE, ILLUSTRATOR This project acknowledges heterotropia, places that do not belong to any other space, spaces that are opposed to others and are destinedin some way to efface them or neutralise them. In this case, homelessness is the counter space, a heterotropia that exists within us that is yet to be expressed as form. This design recognized existing conditions in our own urban surroundings in order to explore how these issues can be appreciated as concepts that act as an instrument of access to the other home. It challenged me to rewrite existing policies and reverse engineer the design methodology in order to demonstrate that this code is translatable rather than a condition that can only be applied to specific circumstances.

The film acts as a witness statement that there is an existing undergroundroot system beneath us in which trees use to communicate to each other and how this language is translated into the build form. It paints a narrative where the user is guided by the behaviour of the roots, relationship with each other and how human logic are no longer in control but instead we acknowledge and appreciate the existing underground languages.

SUPER TIGHTEST STUDIO LEADER: GRAHAM CRIST YEAR/LEVEL: YEAR 3/ LEVEL 6 SOFTWARE: RHINO, PHOTOSHOP Tightness is often seen as a negative notion to people in architecture. But tightness does not necessarily mean small, it is more than that, it is how people use spaces as an instrument that makes living more efficient and the word a smaller footprint. Somehow it is through these chaotic, convoluted spaces that only the city dwellers know how it works and how we find delight in these spaces. It is how people make living better by making these edge conditions work harder. It is in tight living, we find innovative spaces, we learn how people respond or take ownership of these dense urban environment into a more liveable, sustainable, and socially beneficial living. Though the observing of these conditions, it helped me to understand how the city fabric could be adaptable, evolving, growing, and interconnecting itself to create a more sustainable living in high density areas. Perhaps these qualities could manifest itself into a new architecture concept of a better living for us in the future.
ASIAN URBANISM
FEUDAL
LEADER: GRAHAM CRIST YEAR/LEVEL: MASTER FIRST YEAR SOFTWARE: RHINO, ILLUSTRATOR Ho Chi Minh City is a bustling city with roads filled with people and scooters. Between the main roads there are connecting laneways which allows for a much calmer way of life. There is a sense of both intimacy and tightness in these laneways, that brings people together. Despite the chaos, there is a sense of order to the way the civic use these spaces in the laneway. In Vietnam, laneways are not just used as a shortcut but are also used as a social space; for domestic purposes and a place for business. As Dr Graham Crist said in one of his lectures, ‘the concept of laneway relates to the idea of “rasquachismo”, with such tight spaces and limited amount of land’. How do Vietnamese make the most out of these spaces? How are these laneways repurposed or re-used multiple times throughout the day? This mapping analysis showcases the different uses for laneways in Ho Chi Minh city. Instead of seeing tight spaces in laneways as a negative aspect, how does the civic use spaces as an instrument that makes living more efficient and the word a smaller footprint?

Spillage of Boundaries
Division of Space
Owners of the house begin to push their furniture to the outside of their home such as chairs, plants and bicycles.
Easy movable small plastic chairs are used for business, to save space as they are easy to stack and can withstand the rain.
Besides spilling the boundaries from their individual homes to the public, neighbours also take ownership to clean the shared pathway.
The side walls of the hotel become an opportunity for users to promote their businesses by sticking up posters near the eating area of the noodle stall.

Instead of a definite motorbike parking spaces, shop frontages becomes a natural response for bikers to park their vehicles.
Signage in shop frontages become part of the facade and also acts as a boundary line to segregate between commercial and residential areas in vertical spaces.
3m Residential area on top of the shop houses become the roof of the laneway.
Menu boards from the restaurant begin to extend to the pedestrian pathway claiming a large proportion for their own space.
Owner’s of the Italian restaurant begin to take advantage of the existing tree as an extended area for customer to enjoy their meal outdoors with shading.

Extension of Space
Public & Private Space
The tables and chair of the noodle stall extends towards the entrance of the hotel. The furniture becomes an ephemeral object as it can be re-arranged depending on the movement of the pedestrian and time of the day.
The shop front extends their endeavour into the pavement claiming a large proportion as their own. This way the public becomes semi public for the pedestrian, as they have to transverse through the local vendors business which is extended into the street. As a result, this blurs the boundary between public and private.
