CREATIVE PATTERN MAKING DHRUTI MEHTA SECTION: C

ASSIGNMENT 1: SHAPE EXPLORATION ďƒ˜ Started the day with using cut outs of geometrical shapes for example, squares, triangles, circles, etc. in various sizes by putting them on the dress form and exploring what kind of garments that could be made by these.

ďƒ˜

After approximately, 9 explorations were done in that day, we started on finalizing on one of them to be made for this exercise.

ďƒ˜ Once the end product had been finalized, making patterns for the garment started. ďƒ˜ After that was done, tracing and cutting it onto the final fabric started and then stitching took place. ďƒ˜ And so the final garment, which had started with just squares being attached on the dress form took place.

Reflection: Facing quite a difficulty in exploring the shapes with just drapes in the starting was an issue, took me a while to figure out how to go about it. I really enjoyed making this garment and exploring shapes with different ideas in mind.

ASSIGNMENT 2: ZERO WASTE  We started the second week with watching videos and making presentations on zero waste garments, what they mean in this era as well as how can we make them.  After discussing on zero waste, we started with making the envelope dress with a square piece of fabric.  Making a triangle and then marking 1/4th of the hip measurement and making a torso block on it.  Once all this was done, the cut outs of making this dress had to used in various parts of the dress, so that it would make it zero waste. Using the cut out fabric to do bias binding, pockets, patching it on the dress, etc.

Reflection: Figuring out how to aesthetically use the cut out fabric on the dress was the main issue faced in this assignment. Loved learning so much about zero waste, so that we can try and help save the environment as much as possible

ASSIGNMENT 3: SUBTRACTION METHOD  We started with making a pillowcase using a fabric and then placed the front and back of the sleeve pattern as per our desire.

 Making a clove related drawing in the middle of the sleeve and then cutting it out and stitching it.  Figuring out the excess and where to attach it to, and making a sleeve through subtraction method is done.

Reflection: Having already done subtraction method for making a dress previously, we had an idea what to do. But it turned out to be difficult in start to actually figure out how to go about it. After a few failed explorations, we finally understood what to do. Taking subtraction method and making sleeves from it was a really fun assignment.

ASSIGNMENT 4: 3D EXPLORATION ďƒ˜ We first started with watching videos about how the 3D garments are made. After that we stitched bodices and started making our own exploration on it, as functional sleeves. ďƒ˜ Once we finalized the 3D exploration of the sleeves, we made style-lines to help us figure out the pattern for it.

ďƒ˜ We cut the style-lines and traced and cut it onto the final fabric, and then we started stitching the 3D shapes, one shape at a time. ďƒ˜ After this was done, we attached the bodice panels on the functional sleeve.

Reflection: Making a 3D functional garment was the main challenge in this, remembering our previous work using shingo sato helped us a lot. Stitching the shapes to one another took some time to do, but the end result made it all worth it
