SCULPTURE EXHIBITION / ARTPRIZE 2021
Gratitude Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a place of beauty and joy for all people. We’ve been graced with considerable resources to promote the enjoyment, understanding, and appreciation of gardens, sculpture, the natural environment, and the arts. The gifts take different forms, providing creative ways to be inspired by our mission. In a frequently turbulent world, Meijer Gardens is a significant place of tranquility, healing and hope. It is often stated: “Art can change the world.” Art done well can change the world for the better. Meijer Gardens is the beneficiary of a major gift from The Jewish Federation of Grand Rapids, to establish a Holocaust memorial. Ariel Schlesinger’s sculpture Ways to Say Goodbye, a 20-foot-tall aluminum fig tree with shards of glass inserted among its branches, will anchor the memorial. The artwork, dealing with themes of profound loss and grief, will be installed in 2022. The gift is a donation from the Pestka Family, in memory of their father, Henry; the survivors who settled in Western Michigan; and the millions of Jews who perished in the Holocaust. We also have a significant collection dedicated to the children of the Holocaust. In 1998, Leonard and Dora Rosenzweig made a generous gift to establish the Orchid Wall in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory, in memory of Anne Frank and the children of the Holocaust. As Dora Rosenzweig stated then, “I hope that people think about Anne and how she believed that life is beautiful and there’s good in all people.” The incredible beauty of thoughtfully cared for orchids will forever serve as a reminder of the tragic loss of more than a million children to the Holocaust. As well, it reflects Anne Frank’s belief that there is beauty in the world. Both extraordinary gifts further our mission. They serve as an important reminder that beauty is
part of healing what divides people. The art and gardens help preserve the memories of all who died and suffered from the Holocaust. I fervently hope these gifts will inspire others to forever end people’s inhumanity to people. We extend our deep appreciation to the Pestka and Rosenzweig families. The performing arts, too, help us give meaning to our mission. Through the beauty of music, the Fifth Third Bank Summer Concerts, Tuesday Evening Music Club and Jim & Marie Preston Sunday Strings enrich lives. In 2020, our traditional music performances were canceled due to the pandemic. All three series are now actively performing. Positive energy and good cheer are felt from the stage and the audience. Music is truly good for the soul and brings us together, meaningfully. I’m deeply grateful to all our sponsors for their generosity and patience. During your next Meijer Gardens visit, you’ll see the progress of our Welcoming the World: Honoring a Legacy of Love journey. It’s fun to watch each day as the tradespeople perform their tasks—building new facilities, siting artwork, and creating gardens to further our mission. Thank you for your support and patience as we pursue this expansion. Your Meijer Gardens experiences are made possible by our amazing group of volunteers. These talented, hard-working people are dedicated to serving others. Here’s an inspiring example: I walked into our first Tuesday Evening Music Club performance and was greeted by a group of volunteers. As we enjoyed conversation and listened to the band preparing, my volunteer friends were overflowing with enthusiasm at being able to serve others. To say this was an uplifting moment is an understatement. I hope you noticed Seasons has returned in a printed format, on recycled paper, with new additions and a completely updated look. This is only possible due to the generosity of you—our members and benefactors—and the fact we are once again fully open.
Gratefully,

Chrysanthemums & More! FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17–SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2021 Experience the radiant return of late autumn bloomers in this annual horticulture exhibition. At the center of Autumn Glow is the quintessential chrysanthemum, illuminated as you’ve never seen it. Feast your eyes! It’s the ultimate glow up for fall’s most festive flower. Part art and part science, Chrysanthemums & More! celebrates its 23rd year with a curious look into how the interplay of light and shadow transform the Autumn Glow theme at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. A perennial favorite and the largest of its kind in Michigan, our exhibition spans thousands of blossoms across 158 sprawling acres. Peruse pathways aglow with vibrant fall plantings, paying attention to how their look and mood change as you move from the intensity of sun-filled spaces to the understated low light of autumn afternoons. Watch textures soften and shadows elongate as the light of day takes hues from warm to cool. Each display is a visual spectacle of flowers and foliage, appearing to glow from within. Plentiful plantings in the Grand Entry, Welcome Center, and Gunberg and BISSELL corridors showcase the chrysanthemum through the artistry of many designers, among them our own Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park horticulture staff. In the Gunberg Corridor, a different local floral designer each week will create a singular arrangement highlighting the chrysanthemum as its primary element. Of equal note are stunning displays in the Grace Jarecki Seasonal Display Greenhouse, Earl and Donnalee Holton Victorian Garden Parlor, and Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory, each lush and lovely. Treat your senses with a trek into the crisp fall air! Venture onto the Stuart and Barbara Padnos Rooftop Sculpture Garden, with its seasonal wetland views, then make your way to the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden and its cornucopia of chrysanthemums, intermingled with nontraditional autumn plantings to form a quilt-like tapestry. Continue to Michigan’s Farm Garden, where the abundant autumn harvest boasts heirloom vegetables, herbs, gourds and larger-than-life pumpkins. This example of a working family farm occasionally provides some of its more than 40 varieties of produce for our James & Shirley Balk Café. Join us for family-friendly fun, including Fall Family Day, September 18; Herb & Gourd Fest, September 18 and 19; Amazing Honeybees, September 25 and 26; Tuesdays at the Farm including the Autumn Glow Garden, September 28 and October 5; Fall Bonsai Show, October 2 and 3; and Hallowee-Ones, October 22. Fall wouldn’t be the same without you. Come glow with us!

Sculpture in The Ram’s Garden Marshall Fredericks, one of the great 20th-century sculptors, often worked in the tradition of 19th-century French artists known as animaliers. The Ram’s Garden was originally made possible through a generous donation by the Kent Garden Club and is named after Fredericks’ Siberian Ram. The view from the Daniel and Pamella DeVos Ticketing Center to the newly reimagined Ram’s Garden includes major examples of Fredericks’ stylized bronze animal sculptures.

New Volunteer Tribute Garden
The new boardwalk classroom provides an educational platform to learn about wetland habitat areas.
Essay by Steve LaWarre, Vice President of Horticulture Photography by Erin Zacek
Volunteers are an exceptionally important part of the successful formula at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Every moment these beautiful spaces are open to guests, it is estimated two dozen volunteers are here supporting Meijer Gardens’ operations. Volunteers can be found serving in every area, and in every department. Whether for guest services, concerts, special events, or daily care of the conservatories and grounds, volunteers
An expanded BISSELL Corridor will allow greater accessibility for guests.
are a crucial part of the Meijer Gardens mission. It is fitting, then, that these special people would have a special garden—one honoring the work and dedication of these enthusiastic individuals. The Volunteer Tribute Garden was dedicated in October 2006 as a space to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism that has been the foundation of stability, viability and community connection at Meijer Gardens. It serves as a consistent reminder of the importance of volunteers and our volunteer program. Returning to its home in this garden—where it honors our volunteers—is The Tribute, by Oliviero Rainaldi. Our expansion project, Welcoming the World: Honoring a Legacy of Love, provided an opportunity to grow and reimagine several existing garden spaces; the Volunteer Tribute Garden is an area that will see some dramatic change. Because of its central location, this garden is a gateway to many of the outdoor gardens and grounds. The expansion of the building and outdoor access presented an opportunity to design this space in a new way. Guests have been able to watch the garden expansion firsthand, and the new Volunteer Tribute Garden will open with a rededication in late fall 2021. Wildlife-friendly plant material will be incorporated into the landscape. 8 | HORTICULTURE ESSAY

Watch Us Grow
We’re seeing the first bit of green in what will soon be the Tassell-Wisner-Bottrall English Perennial Garden! We recently planted the first two—of more than 75 —trees in this garden space. Come out and watch the process! Have fun trying to count the various types of plants. The first tree, planted in June, is a big eastern redbud Cercis canadensis (left). These trees have beautiful pink blossoms in springtime, and you can see these trees layered throughout our grounds. This redbud was saved from a construction site in Lansing. The second tree planted was a Persian ironwood, Parrotia persica. This was in our original Amphitheater Plaza and was saved at the beginning of our expansion project. We’ve been taking care of it in our nursery area, anticipating this perfect location.

Louise Burkhalter, 108, enjoying her dedicated rocking chair.
Porch Perfect How do you honor a woman who’s celebrated 108 birthdays and experienced more than many of us will in a lifetime? With a legacy that rocks, quite literally. Louise Burkhalter is the quintessential Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park member—and one of our favorite people. “Of all the beautiful spaces, my mother loves the Michigan’s Farm Garden most,” notes her daughter, Mary Peterson. “The porch, in particular, is her special spot. So it seemed only fitting to honor her with her very own rocking chair.” Mary Peterson and Glen Peterson did just that. Louise now has a rocker bearing her name on the porch of the

Lena Meijer Farmhouse. “My mother is truly a special person,” adds Mary. “We wanted to pay tribute to her while she was still with us. She loves to admire the flowers while rocking in her chair. I must admit, she looks just like she was meant to be there.” The experience rekindles memories of Louise’s life as a young mother and wife, too. She and her husband of 65 years, Carl, lived on a farm with acreage, cattle, orchards, and a vegetable garden. “The Michigan’s Farm Garden brings my mom closer to that life she loved so very much,” Mary said with a smile. “She also feels a kindred connection to Lena Meijer—she loves that Lena’s childhood family farm had a barn and a windmill, too.” Though Louise suffers from macular degeneration now, Mary notes she can still see contrast and recalls the charm of the changing landscape. “From our many visits in her younger years, she remembers her beloved perennials like sweet peas and Shasta daisies.”
The 1880’s Farmhouse at Michigan’s Farm Garden is a ¾ replica of Lena (Rader) Meijer’s childhood home.
Louise’s affection for flowers often sparks conversation with guests, too. “We make precious memories with each visit. Spreading joy is one of my mother’s gifts to the world. If you see her rocking on the porch, pull up a chair. It’s a real treat.” We couldn’t agree more.

University of Michigan Health-West Christmas & Holiday Traditions TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2021—SUNDAY, JANUARY 2, 2022 Across cultures and continents, countless experiences connect us and conjure the spirit of the holidays. Lend us an ear as we explore the Sounds of the Season. Experience the season through a global soundtrack that’s sure to inspire and intrigue. University of Michigan Health-West Christmas & Holiday Traditions marks the 27th year of our annual horticulture exhibition at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, honoring the role music, bells, gongs, whistles and animals play in treasured holiday celebrations. Enter our winter wonderland, illuminated by 300,000 lights and filled with the sights and sounds of 42 cultural displays—each begging a closer look. As you take them in, see and hear instruments and objects that bring the holidays to life. Did you know Vienna, Austria, is the birthplace of the beloved Christmas carol “Silent Night” as well as some of history’s most famous composers, such as Mozart, Schubert and Strauss? Or that traditional African music is central to Kwanzaa? Percussion, piano, and handheld instruments create a musical backdrop as lively and meaningful as the colors of this iconic celebration. Notice how Eid al-Fitr, the Islamic festival of breaking the fast, is honored with prayer and chants of “Subhan Allah,” meaning “Glory to God.” Listen to the Railway Garden as the bustling train makes its way through this magical miniature cityscape. Even winter birds spread stories of holiday joy as they chirp and sing songs of the season. Bring the family for a Saturday afternoon with Santa’s reindeer. While you’re outside, take a brisk walk to Michigan’s Farm Garden, where you can hop aboard our charming vintage sleigh inside a picture-perfect, century-old barn lit by sparkling evergreens.
