sculpture physically and conceptually lies at the heart of the Welcome Center—a gateway for the visitor into the experience of artwork and gardens they’ll encounter during their visit. Plensa’s marble reliefs recall ancient monuments and the traditions of stone carving in ancient Sumerian, Babylonian, and Egyptian art. Yet for Plensa, the idea and poetry of Utopia is to look toward the future, to become a space where visitors will complete the work with their thoughts and emotions. Tribute Garden redesign, the timing was right for an update. Rainaldi selected the circular shape to create harmony with the architectural design of the building. Symbolically, the circle has long been associated with the never-ending cycle of the calendar: the sun, the moon, seasonal change and life itself. Guests are welcome to traverse the space between the two semicircles, exploring the interior in an intimate setting. Newly designed aluminum panels are being inserted into The Tribute’s interior. The exterior bronze panels poetically tell the stories of a diverse group of Meijer Gardens guest experiences, as facilitated by our many

The artist describes the central curve as “the heart of the sculpture which should be dedicated exclusively to Fred and Lena, creating an idealized place where horticulture and sculpture dialogue together.” A lone figure represents Fred Meijer, while swirling floral elements suggest both Lena’s love of gardens and the union between the two. In the second structure, Rainaldi explains, “The four main elements of the landscape are [symbolically] represented: the rain, water, watershed and lakes.” Here the viewer is simultaneously in the water, looking up through reeds at the sky, and seeing an aerial view of the

Angles push the Garden Pavilion’s soaring ceilings higher, their sharp geometry softened by shadows. The ceiling is finished in an acoustical plaster product hand-applied over acoustical insulation, partially counteracting the effect of the solid stone cladding of the Utopia sculpture all around the room. The dynamic space differs with every moment, as the earth rotates around the sun, as the earth tilts. Clerestory windows pointing to the east and west and a skylight above capture and diffuse illumination—enhancing and creating subtleties missed at first glance. The configuration of the information desk, crafted with reclaimed monkeypod wood from Costa Rica, sprang from discussions of its final use. The design allows for placement of large floral arrangements. Using the natural wood in its fairly raw form was important for the architects—as a way to bring warmth into the room and compliment the marble of Utopia, and to introduce horticulture within the space of the sculpture. The desk’s angular placement responds to the multiple directions from which people will access the Garden Pavilion. Sit on a monkeypod bench and experience the room. Notice

Many of the works have never been shown in the United States, among them sculptures, painting, photographs, collages, embroidery and film. Shonibare, a self-proclaimed “postcolonial hybrid” of British-Nigerian heritage, has emerged as one of the leading artistic voices in the global art world. He is best known for his playful combination of colorful Dutch wax-fabric patterns popular in West Africa with the fashion of upper-class Victorian culture. As the exhibition will reveal, Shonibare thinks globally and uses his artistic imagination to comment on colonialism, art history, environment, education, knowledge, food justice, and other subjects of universal concern.
