FROM INSPIRATION TO ACTION
Good ideas are powerful … but only if they are followed by action to bring them to life. It was a good idea to start a botanical garden with a unique mission combining horticulture and sculpture. It took the dedication and hard work of thousands of people to establish Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park as a place where, since we opened, 10.4 million people have visited to experience joy. As a member of Meijer Gardens, you are an important part of furthering our mission. Your support is important to us and sincerely appreciated.
FRED & DOROTHY FICHTER BUTTERFLIES ARE BLOOMING
A man who not only has great ideas, but the creativity, energy and skill to act on them is Ai Weiwei. The artist, who was born and raised in China, writes that “Act” is his favorite word, and that to take action is the most important lesson in life. We have just opened what is perhaps our most ambitious exhibition yet, Ai Weiwei at Meijer Gardens: Natural State. I’m often asked: How did Meijer Gardens attract Ai Weiwei, whom The New York Times called one of the most influential artists of his day, to present his first-ever exhibition at a botanical garden? First and foremost is that the generosity of Fred and Lena Meijer, our faithful donors and our members have made this possible. Also important is our talented and hardworking curatorial and exhibitions staff. Their ability to form deeply meaningful relationships and their willingness to work long hours and travel to faraway places—sometimes at the expense of missing weekends and holidays with family—all come together in a truly significant and important way with this exhibition. You won’t want to miss Ai Weiwei at Meijer Gardens: Natural State. Bring along a friend or two for the experience of a lifetime.
In the Summer 2016 issue of Seasons, I wrote about planning for the future. In that column, I announced that through the generosity of the Meijer Family, we hired the architectural firm Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners (TWBTA) to lead us through a master planning process to accommodate our growth. We have been working with TWBTA for over a year now and the plans are nearly ready. Our process is designed intentionally to help us advance our mission, honor our donors and maintain our commitment to accessibility and the environment. Shortly we will announce a capital campaign, Welcoming the World: Honoring a Legacy of Love, to help us secure the financial resources necessary to realize our master plan. I look forward to sharing this with you and asking you to join us for this incredible journey. David S. Hooker President and CEO, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park Gratefully,

FRED & DOROTHY FICHTER BUTTERFLIES ARE BLOOMING March 1–April 30
Nature is abloom with patterns aplenty, none more beautiful than those found on the wings of a butterfly. Behold a captivating kaleidoscope of caterpillars, butterflies and plants during our most beloved spring exhibition.
Remember the first time you peered into a kaleidoscope as a child? It was a calming yet captivating escape into a world of colors, shapes and patterns—much like those found in nature. This March, recreate that same magic as you walk into our living kaleidoscope during Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming. This year marks the twenty-second anniversary of this perennial favorite and the nation’s largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibition. The Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory will transform into a haven for more than 60 species of butterflies and moths hailing from Asia, Africa, Central America and South America. More than 6,000 of these winged wonders will take flight in our 15,000-square-foot glass house to soar and feast on savory nectar plants and other sweet treats. Don’t miss Double Coconut Island, where butterflies bask in the sun, or the Butterfly Bungalow, where they emerge from delicate chrysalides to stretch their wings in preparation for their first flight. Nearly 1,000 chrysalides are delivered to Meijer Gardens weekly.
A KALEIDOSCOPE OF BUTTERFLIES Discover a living kaleidoscope of amazing patterns at the Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming exhibition. Nature is filled with striking artistic patterns, appearing on caterpillars, butterfly wings, flowers, foliage and more. A group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope…we invite you to experience the mysterious, always changing and awe-inspiring patterns that effortlessly reveal themselves in our natural world.
Wanted. Needed. Appreciated. Various jobs and shifts. Mid-February through mid-May. Contact Tom Hoving at thoving@meijergardens.org or 616-974-5221.
Delight in nature’s kaleidoscope as you discover the intricately patterned Tree Nymph or the brightly decorated Leopard Lacewing butterflies. Keep watch for favorite returning species like the beguiling Common Morpho, curious Clearwing and commanding Atlas Moth, with its impressive six- to twelve-inch wingspan. Equally enchanting are the patterns found in plants. Notice the unique markings on the leaves of sanchezia and cycad plants, or the distinctive trunks of the screw pine and cabbage palm trees. The beauty is in this micro world of details. Don’t miss the caterpillar room in the Grace Jarecki Seasonal Display Greenhouse. This companion exhibition lets you get up close and personal with emerging pupae and full-grown caterpillars, which boast a kaleidoscopic visual feast of their own. See brightly striped Monarch caterpillars munching on milkweed host plants mixed in with flowering spring plantings. Docents will be on hand to guide your experience. Bring your flashlight for Tuesday Night Lights, when you can stay until 9 pm to observe the nightlife in the Tropical Conservatory. Other must-see events throughout the exhibition include Night of the Butterflies, the Butterfly Ballet and outdoor children’s activities in the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden. Visit the Information Center for exact dates and times.

STIRRINGS OF SPRING Spring is a marvelous awakening at Meijer Gardens. As the days grow longer, our gardens come alive and begin their early spring flowering, setting the stage for a beautiful pattern of growth. This is the season that piques our wonder as plants that sleep all winter begin to awaken with color and life. Each spring sets the stage for all seasons as flowers and plants once more follow an age-old regimen of storing food, creating new growth, setting buds, ripening fruit and dispersing seeds for next season. As the soil warms, buds begin to swell on trees and woody shrubs. Many plants produce flowers before any leaves emerge. The growth of spring ephemerals (early, herbaceous plants such as the spring beauty or Virginia bluebell) is prompted by warming and thawing soil. These wildflowers get an early start from energy stored within their underground bulbs, corms, or rhizomes. The earliest spring flowers bloom when not much else is flowering—some may occasionally be seen when there is still snow on the ground. Their bright colors and fragrance attract a select few pollinators that rely on these early flowers for nectar and pollen. Buds enlarge, and flowering can often happen very quickly. The window for pollination can be very short for these early bloomers, often taking advantage of an insect’s short active life cycle in late winter or early spring. Our diverse gardens showcase several examples of these early blooms. One of the earliest woody plants to bloom is witch hazel, a large shrub that may be found in the Gwen Frostic Woodland Shade Garden, The Richard & Helen DeVos Japanese Garden, and throughout the Sculpture Park. Vernal, or springblooming, witch hazel (Hamamelis vernalis) and the hybrid

witch hazel (Hamamelis x intermedia) can both be found in the outdoor gardens. In mid to late February, shaggy, spidery winter blooms with long, crinkly petals may be found clustered up and down the length of their branches. These unique flowers are intensely fragrant and are often apparent by smell before they are seen. Early spring ephemerals can be discovered throughout our outdoor grounds. A walk through the Woodland Shade Garden and out to Michigan’s Farm Garden will reveal a rich assortment of early blooms, including common snow-drop (Galanthus nivalis), eastern trout lily (Erythronium americanum), bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis), jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) and winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis). The Leslie E. Tassell English Perennial & Bulb Garden proudly displays blooming bulbs all spring long. Bulbs have been bred and hybridized to enhance the color, bloom size, and shape of these early flowers. Some varieties date back hundreds of years. In the northern corner of this garden, with the soil sheltered and warmed by the brick building, Grand Rapids’ earliest daffodils will bloom. These narcissus ‘Peeping Tom’ can be seen through the glass of the Scenic Corridor and are an annual reminder that warmer days are ahead. The emergence of spring is a quiet wonder at Meijer Gardens. Visit often to experience the joy of seeing the delicate seasonal changes firsthand. Essay by Steve LaWarre, Director of Horticulture

THE RIGHT-SIZE FLOWER GARDEN The Master Lecture Series SECCHIA GARDEN LECTURE Tuesday, April 18, 7 pm Speaker: Kerry Ann Mendez A self-proclaimed “passionate perennialist,” Kerry Ann Mendez has made a career of keeping it simple. Her high-impact, low-maintenance philosophy on gardening has made her a coveted speaker at garden clubs, symposiums and industry events nationwide. We couldn’t be happier to welcome her to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park and the Secchia Garden Lecture this spring. A believer in work-life balance, Kerry Ann always found refuge in the garden. Yet the more demanding her career and family got, the more difficult she found her growing gardens to maintain. She understands the need for gardens that are more in balance with busy lives, changing interests and aging bodies. Learn Kerry Ann’s secrets to “right-size” success in the garden on April 18. She’ll share simple strategies and proven design tips for creating gorgeous, year-round flower gardens blooming with no-fuss perennials, ornamental grasses, flowering shrubs, bulbs and annuals. She’ll even bring inspiring images of some of her favorite “less is more” garden landscapes.
An acclaimed speaker, Kerry Ann has been highlighted on HGTV and in major national trade and consumer publications, including Better Homes and Gardens, Horticulture, Fine Gardening and Garden Gate, in which her gardens were one of just five in the nation featured. She’s also creator of “The Great Gardens and Landscaping Symposium,” producer of seven Horticulture magazine national gardening webinars, and the national spokesperson for the Proven Winners and Espoma horticulture brands. In 2014, Kerry was recognized with a gold medal by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for exceptional teaching and writings that increase public enjoyment and appreciation of horticulture. An accomplished author of three gardening books, Kerry Ann also writes a monthly column for several national publications. Her 2017 Right-Size Flower Garden Calendar features Meijer Gardens. Her most recent book, The RightSize Flower Garden, will be available for purchase, and a book signing will immediately follow the lecture. Join us for an evening that’s sure to inspire. FEE: Free for members, general admission for non-members. RSVP: 616-975-3144 or skilroy@meijergardens.org Captioning service will be provided. 12 SEASONAL HIGHLIGHTHIGHLIGHT
INSPIRED BY THE GARDENS
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Loeschner Art Competition. Join us in celebrating the 2016 winner, Mary Brodbeck. Her work Blanket, a Japanese woodblock print, will become part of our permanent collection. The origins of the Loeschner Art Competition trace back to the very beginnings of Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, when the West Michigan Horticultural Society asked philanthropist Ray Loeschner to direct the capital campaign to build a botanical garden. “It was a perfect fit because I’d been a passionate gardener since my youth,” Ray says. “I remember going out to the location with Fred Meijer when it was just a piece of dirt—there was nothing there but a dream. It was such a privilege to be one of the founders.” Ray and his wife, Nancy, who passed away in 2012, were instrumental throughout those first years and continually looked for ways to connect the gardens to the community. “We were interested in art and had been involved with an art fair in Chicago, which held an annual competition that drew the community of artists,” Ray explains. The Loeschners approached Meijer Gardens with the idea of creating a similar competition. “The board immediately embraced it. We all loved the idea of artists visiting the gardens. We weren’t interested in artists submitting just any work—it had to be inspired by their experiences here.” The couple established an endowment to fund the competition in perpetuity. In 2002, Meijer Gardens unveiled the Ray and Nancy Loeschner Art Competition for two-dimensional art, including drawing, print, pastel, painting and photography. Fifteen years later, the juried competition has become an important part of the cultural experience at Meijer Gardens. The 2016 winner is Mary Brodbeck of Kalamazoo. Her work, Blanket, was inspired by the Zen-style garden in The Richard & Helen DeVos Japanese Garden. The artist received a $5,000 purchase award, with the piece joining Meijer Gardens’ permanent collection. Members of the Loeschner family came to Meijer Gardens in February to celebrate the 2016 winner at a recognition luncheon, where Brodbeck shared insights into her artistic process and the inspiration behind the winning work. “Each artist illuminates my family’s love for the artistic and botanical beauty of Meijer Gardens,” Ray says. “It’s our honor to honor them.”
