Inspiration and Technique... Welcome to the 2010 - 2011 Annual Catalog!
Cheryl Sinn Business Manager
Our educational programming is based on ideals of both artistic quality and diversity. Our faculty is made up of working artists who are exemplars in their fields, and love to share both their technical knowledge as well as their own inspirational sources. Technique can be taught - it can be broken down into steps and materials and processes. Inspiration is both a starting point for artists and something that magically happens in the midst of technique. Time seems to stop and you are truly immersed in what you are doing. This moment of going beyond technique is often referred to as 'getting into the zone'. The ultimate purpose of technique may be just that - to get us beyond it.
Shirley Eichten Albrecht Gallery Director
Knowing that makes technique all the more important.
Cyndi Thau Sharon Manzke Diane Schwilling Assistant Gallery Directors
If technique is a path into the 'zone', excellent instruction clears the way for our whole being to engage in bringing our imaginations to life!
Debbie Winslow Education Operations Director Nancy N. Wilson Development Director
Rod Gregory Facilities Manager Janet Collins Special Exhibitions Coordinator
We invite you to come and experience your own artistic breakthrough in the wonderful setting of Sedona, a veritable Shangri-La in the midst of the high desert landscape of Northern Arizona. You are encouraged to allow some time on either side of your artistic immersion to enjoy this truly beautiful and inspiring environment. Vince Fazio

Magical Death Valley
The Enchanted Coast: Big Sur
Ian Whitehead Feb 10 - 13 2011
Ian Whitehead June 2 - 5 2011
Death Valley is the largest national park outside of Alaska. We will be photographing from the lowest point in the U.S. to views of the highest peak in the contiguous United States. Winter temperatures in the park stay in the sixties and seventies from before dawn to the very last light. As evening sets in, we will be witnessing and photographing the surreal and magical light and landscape including areas such as the sand dunes near Stove Pipe Wells, Artist Palette, Zabriske Pt, Bad Water, Twenty Mule Team Canyon. From Death Valley we will head over to Lone Pine CA, where we will photograph the granite arches of the Alabama Foothills of the Eastern Sierras with Mount Whitney in the backdrop. Limited enrollment assures there will be plenty of individual attention. You will learn more than just how to take better pictures, but also how to produce better compositions as you develop your own artistic style as a photographer.
Big Sur, on the California coast, contains vast wildernesses and breathtaking views. Stretching ninety miles along the rugged central coast region of California, Big Sur presents endless photo opportunities from tide pools and jagged rocks to the Santa Lucia Mountain Range. We will be spending most of our time between Big Sur and Carmel visiting sights like McWay Falls, Bixby Bridge, The Old Coast Rd., Pfieffer Beach, Garrapata St. Park, Point Lobos and more. This workshop is for all levels of photographers and there will be plenty of individual time with Ian to discuss technically and artistically how to take your photography to the next level. Some of the items that will be discussed are balancing exposures between land, ocean and sky along with learning depth of field and how to design a composition. Other topics of discussion will be the use of neutral density filters and bracketing exposures to use with HDR software. For this trip we will be car-pooling to locations and it will be necessary for you to arrange your own lodging.

Figurative Raku - Paperclay Sculpture
Jill Carver and Kathryn Stats Sept 10 - 17 2011
Lorri Acott-Fowler Sept 10 - 17 2011
Join renowned artists Kathryn Stats and Jill Carver for an exciting painting workshop in Tuscany. Between Sienna, Florence and San Gimignano, in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, sits the beautiful Villa Fattoria Bacio - a perfect blend of old world rustica and catered comfort, surrounded on all sides by spectacular views of the meandering hills of Tuscany. Lodging at the villa, continental breakfast and genuine Tuscan dinners with the Villas own wine are included. Kathryn and Jill will work together alternating demonstrations and providing a lot of individual instruction to each student. Instruction will focus on compostion, editing the landscape and the relationship between value pattern and color. This oil painting workshop is for those who have had previous study focused on plein air painting in oils with professional instruction and are ready to take their work to the next level. This workshop is not designed for the beginning painter or for the novice plein air painter. The villa's grounds abounds with subject matter both intimate and panoramic. Join us for an unforgettable painting experience in the hills of Tuscany.
Lorri Acott-Fowler will present participants with a new way of working with clay, and teach students to use the work of other great artists to inform and inspire their own work. Using paperclay (regular ceramic clay with paper fibers added to it), Lorri teaches skills and techniques that encourage fragile and elongated forms that are often regarded as impossible to make and fire. After initial instruction on the methods of creating paperclay sculpture we will venture into Florence to be inspired by the Italian masters. The class will culminate in an actual raku firing of our work so that you will leave class with your finished sculpture. Fun, hands-on and experimental, Lorri will teach you the concepts and techniques and then allow you to "go for it”, opening your mind to a new way of creating.

This on-location and studio painting workshop is for all levels of painters who want to learn the time-honored joy of painting & sketching outdoors and finishing up in the studio. Painting the Tuscan Light Within and Without Jeanne Carbonetti Sep 8 - 15 2012 Painting Tuscan Light from Within : a uniquely Italian approach to expressive watercolor. Drawing from her heritage, her frequent visits to a beloved Italy and a long career pushing the boundaries of creative watercolor, Jeanne has developed a course which brings together the techniques for capturing Tuscan light in watercolor with the thematic power of one’s personal expression of that light. Tuscan light will be married to the light within as painters at every level, move in a new way through the craft of picture making in landscape, still life, and figure. Jeanne will demonstrate a different aspect of the craft each day, as well as provide ample amounts of individual attention. Go to the Field Expeditions link at the Sedona Arts Center’s website for all the details.
Delivered by Accident in Twilight The Art of Collage - with Nick Bantock Sep 15 - 22 2012 With Italy and all its rich history as our backdrop, environment and inspiration this workshop will focus on both collage techniques and the roots of creativity. Along with plenty of practical collage time, Nick will engage everyone in a variety of art discussions intended to provoke a better understanding of the nature of art and ways to circumnavigate creative block. In the second half of the workshop (after being bombarded with various projects) each person will be working on a single collage. Everything from starting techniques through to the handling of paint over numerous built-up layers will be addressed. In 1991 Nick Bantock was catapulted (kicking and screaming) into the limelight as his book Griffin and Sabine became a worldwide phenomenon. The Perceptual Moment Master Class Landscape Intensive Stuart Shils Oct 27, 28, 29 2010 TUITION: $850 Actual cost: $1020 This workshop will concentrate on deepening and cultivating our visual sensitivity by looking critically at nature and painting with the loaded brush - aspiring to broad yet particular summations of form, naturalistic color and clarified visual mood. Emphasis will be placed on the perceptual processes in front of nature, the editorial response that follows in the head of the painter, the way that perception translates into paint and on shaking
up and/or questioning what is meant by “finish”. “Rather than bringing home conventionally finished trophies, I’ll encourage visual excitement, expansion of perceptual understanding and fun. Fun is why we really paint after all!” Each day Stuart Shils will discuss and demonstrate: 1) how to eliminate irrelevant distractions and think clearly about our approach to the visual encounter outdoors. 2) how to think conceptually, perceptually and tech-

Plein Air to Studio Intermediate /Advanced Michael Workman April 18 - 22 2011 TUITION: $850 Actual cost: $1020 For Michael Workman, the act of painting usually starts with an emotional response to the landscape and is ultimatily completed by the viewer through their emotional response to the painting. A delicate balance is achieved in his paintings between realism and abstraction. The landscape can be dramatic, moody and subtle. Michael Workman's art is blended in a play between opposites on a variety of levels: classicism and romanticism, thin and thick paint, warm and cool colors, careful planning and spontaneity. "That flirtation between yin and yang is by design, because in Workman's view, mastering those opposites is a source of unparalleled magic." (SouthWest Art, September 1996).
This workshop will emulate Michael’s working process by starting in the beautiful Sedona landscape for two days of plein air research and then developing work in the studio for the remainder of the week. Michael will demonstrate and lecture for all the students with one-on-one time for discussion and critique designed to help each student achieve their own personal vision. www.michaelworkman.com

Zen Calligraphy Alok Hsu Kwang-Han Nov 6 & 7 2010 TUITION: $375 includes set of materials for each student Actual cost: $450 This workshop is for artists and nonartists, anyone drawn to the adventure of being intimate with the unknown. A great intelligence, good humor and creativity all exist outside the boundaries of what we know, and when we open ourselves they come to find us. Being playful with notknowing and putting aside all ideas on how to paint, you might be asked to paint the “energy” of music, a Rumi poem, a partner acting like a wild animal, the sound of silence, the Lord of Chaos, your heart’s desire…while your brush dances
from emptiness, you watch, amazed, exuberant and grateful. During the workshop you will learn to hold your new brushes as friends and move with them in harmony. Through simple and effective energy and meditation exercises you will more and more return to the natural state of “resting in presence and moving from emptiness”. Throughout the two days, we will share our paintings in gentle and humorous ways, becoming more relaxed and available to existence. Alok Hsu Kwang-Han is a highly original and internationally acclaimed Zen calligraphic painter from China. He has exhibited at the Seattle Asian Art Museum, the Great Hall of Exhibition in Shanghai and other venues. Visit Alok’s website for more information. www.zencalligraphy.com

We will spend time on the basic principals of design – the rules of composition, value, color and shape – and how to apply them to small still life set-ups. We will then experiment with color relationships using an alternative to the traditional color wheel, explore color mixing, and how each color “leans” towards others. We will push our compositions to avoid “floating” objects and learn the one simple rule to avoid a boring still-life. Throughout, there will be demos with handouts and one-onone critiques. Finally we will learn how to set up a daily painting blog, the ins and outs of eBay, marketing your work, etc. There will be reference material on this to take home. www.carolmarine.blogspot.com
strong drawing skills, composition, color, value, and edges - we’ll then advance to working in a loose, painterly style, paying special attention to expressive brushwork while maintaining descriptive detail. We’ll also explore the interplay between the surface of a painting and the representational space depicted. The end result will be a deeper understanding of your own visual language within the context of representational painting. This workshop will consist of demos, short exercises, gentle group critiques, and plenty of free time to paint with personal attention from the instructor. Participants should bring photos to use as source material as well as a digital camera to capture Sedona’s stunning setting.

Watercolor Inside and Out Charles Reid Nov 12 - 16 2012 TUITION: $775 Actual cost: $930 Learning to simplify and avoid overworking are the goals of the class. I use the same approach for figures, still life, and landscapes. First we'll use contour drawing, helping students to concentrate on interconnecting shapes rather than on individual isolated objects. Next, we'll practice "Direct Painting", using as few over washes as possible. We'll concentrate on good paint consistency (the correct ration of water and paint when the brush is loaded.) Our hope will be to achieve the correct color, edge variety and tonal value with our first try. It's strongly advised that each student will have reviewed my most recent books, "Charles Reid's Watercolor Secrets" and "Charles Reid's Watercolor Solutions." www.charlesreid.com 22

The Art Experience program encourages everyone to become actively engaged in the arts – as an artist or one who simply enjoys art. Our newsletter e-blast and website invite members and non-members alike to participate in exciting art experiences that will be scheduled on an ongoing basis, updated monthly. The events and workshops will typically be half-day or full-day in length, often scheduled on weekends, making them available to everyone. And . . . very affordable. Experiences will be offered in three categories: • Art Appreciation Events - Develop a greater appreciation and deeper understanding of a variety of art forms, mediums, styles, and artists through art excursions, guest speakers, exhibits and more - see the Foundations and Founders of Modern Art below. • Introductory Art Workshops - Take your first step into the world of art - as the artist. Try your hand at a new medium or style. Enjoy one or two-day workshops to test the waters. • Artistic Development Opportunities - The path of the developing artist, from novice to emerging to professional, requires a skill-set not always easily obtained. Let us help you! Learn from those who have walked the path before you through presentations by guest speakers, workshops, open studios and other diverse experiences.
Foundations and Founders of Modern Art Presented by Heather Dies This eight-part lecture series will track the radical innovations and avant-garde experiments of the late 19th century that shaped modern art. Monet, Manet, Seurat and Van Gogh perpetually impacted the art world, and our in-depth analysis of these revolutionary figures will reveal the secrets behind their sensations. Please join us the second Thursday of each month at 10:00 am as we explore the Foundations and Founders of Modern Art. Each Session is $8 or you can register for the entire series of eight classes for $50 (AH1011)

What does it take to paint your very best possible painting? Let's explore that! The goal of this unique class is to create at least one painting that you and others will consider one of your best paintings ever, or maybe even a series. First we will examine basic principles found in great art and look at some masterful examples. Then we will explore how to invite inspiration, plan a great composition, work out your values, and mix harmonious colors. Then we’ll lay in an underpainting and develop the painting itself through intentional and intelligent brushwork. You will receive frequent individual feedback as well as group guidance throughout the process. Recommended for both professional and non-professional artists, with some knowledge of drawing, color mixing, composition and basic painting technique. www.susanpitcairn.com
