Our educational programming is based on ideals of both artistic quality and diversity. Our faculty is made up of working artists who are exemplars in their fields, and love to share both their technical knowledge as well as their own inspirational sources. Technique can be taught - it can be broken down into steps and materials and processes. Inspiration is both a starting point for artists and something that magically happens in the midst of technique. Time seems to stop and you are truly immersed in what you are doing. This moment of going beyond technique is often referred to as 'getting into the zone'. The ultimate purpose of technique may be just that - to get us beyond it.

Payment & Cancellation Policy • Art Workshops: $100 deposit is non-refundable. The balance of the tuition is due 30 days before first day of the workshop. The student’s credit card will be charged for the amount due at that time. There are no refunds after the 30 day cut-off date. • Field Expeditions: Each expedition has its own payment and cancellation policy; these can be reviewed online or call for details. • Cancellations for all workshops must be in writing and received by the Sedona Arts Center before the 30 day cut-off date for the workshop. Emails are not accepted. • There are absolutely no refunds after the 30 day cut-off date for any reason. The Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for providing make-ups or issuing refunds, credits or transfers for sessions missed as a result of illnesses, emergencies or other events beyond our control. Students will receive a full tuition refund only in the event that the Arts Center cancels a workshop. We strongly urge students to purchase refundable airline tickets in case of workshop cancellations or other unforeseen changes. The Arts Center is not responsible for non-refundable ticket purchases. Scholarships - Limited funds are available each year to students who will benefit and have a financial need. A scholarship award can pay up to half of the tuition for a workshop or a fixed amount towards year-round classes. Applications are available on the home page of our website for as long as funds are available.

New Pricing - Tuition vs. Actual Cost There are two prices presented for workshops. The TUITION and the ACTUAL COST. You can choose either amount to pay when you enroll. Over twenty percent of our school’s annual expenses are met by donations and contributions. Much of this support is contributed by individuals. If you choose to pay the ACTUAL COST option you are making your own donation to support that workshop. The difference between the tuition and the actual cost becomes a tax-deductible donation to the Sedona Arts Center. Capturing the Endangered Landscape Tom Till July 19 – 20, 2010 TUITION: $ 250 Spend two days with landscape photographer Tom Till, working in the classroom and on independent assignment field shoots. Till has been called by Outdoor Photographer one of the "Lords of Landscape Photography." All skill levels and digital, film, 35mm - 4x5 photographers welcome. Please bring a good tripod. Our field subjects will be Sedona's finest scenery. Subjects covered in the field include all digital camera controls and strategies, shooting HDR, using Live View, improving composition and the qualities of light. Indoors, we will work on HDR processing, Lightroom workflow, and Photoshop plug-ins. Tom is approachable, eager to share his knowledge, patient and encouraging with his fellow photographers. Death Valley is the largest national park outside of Alaska. We will be photographing from the lowest point in the U.S. to views of the highest peak in the contiguous United States. Winter temperatures in the park stay in the sixties and seventies from before dawn to the very last light. As evening sets in, we will be witnessing and photographing the surreal and magical light and landscape including areas such as the sand dunes near Stove Pipe Wells, Artist Palette, Zabriske Pt, Bad Water, Twenty Mule Team Canyon. From Death Valley we will head over to Lone Pine CA, where we will photograph the granite arches of the Alabama Foothills of the Eastern Sierras with Mount Whitney in the backdrop. Limited enrollment assures there will be plenty of individual attention. You will learn more than just how to take better pictures, but also how to produce better compositions as you develop your own artistic style as a photographer.

Big Sur, on the California coast, contains vast wildernesses and breathtaking views. Stretching ninety miles along the rugged central coast region of California, Big Sur presents endless photo opportunities from tide pools and jagged rocks to the Santa Lucia Mountain Range. We will be spending most of our time between Big Sur and Carmel visiting sights like McWay Falls, Bixby Bridge, The Old Coast Rd., Pfieffer Beach, Garrapata St. Park, Point Lobos and more. This workshop is for all levels of photographers and there will be plenty of individual time with Ian to discuss technically and artistically how to take your photography to the next level. Some of the items that will be discussed are balancing exposures between land, ocean and sky along with learning depth of field and how to design a composition. Other topics of discussion will be the use of neutral density filters and bracketing exposures to use with HDR software. For this trip we will be car-pooling to locations and it will be necessary for you to arrange your own lodging.

Nov 1 - 5 2010 Hosted at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, this workshop will be about capturing the moment in this beautiful beach resort atmosphere. Students will have the opportunity to work from prints of digital photos that they have taken on the beaches, boardwalks and marinas, coastal southern mansions and shopping. Karin Jurick will guide students in the process of painting (and editing) from photos while keeping the paint application fresh and the color rich and bright. Instruction will be available from 9 - 1 with one additional afternoon session. Other afternoons students will be free to paint in the studio or explore the environment. A Painting a Day New York City Light in the Urban Landscape Karin Jurick May 23 - 27, 2011 Hosted at the National Academy of Design

Paint the morning and afternoon light as it casts its warm glow through towering canyon walls and reflects off the river. This 220mile Colorado River painting trip down the Grand Canyon has been custom-designed especially for plein air artists. Camping locations are selected for an inspiring array of compositions with midday rafting hours taking you from one extraordinary painting site to the next. Intermediate to professional artists take this trip to provide many months of research material for studio work. Less experienced painters may choose to have instruction for the first three mornings of the trip with Cody DeLong whose personal guidance will help with the particular challenges found in this setting including simplification of complex scenes, value design and color harmonies particular to the canyon. Students will explore the fabrication of their own handbuilt or wheel-thrown ceramic forms using a porcelain clay body while learning to create a surface receptive to unique Crystal Glazes. Crystalline glazes have a magical quality. The slightest movement causes light to dance across the surface of the crystals, revealing layered depths of color and texture in a constantly changing rhythm. The challenge and fascination of this glazing technique is to recreate the process of crystalization that in nature can take thousands of years. Our instructor will also invite us to create unique ceramic jewelry applying this special glaze technique. Join renowned artists Kathryn Stats and Jill Carver for an exciting painting workshop in Tuscany. Lorri Acott-Fowler will present participants with a new way of working with clay, and teach students to use the work of other great artists to inform and inspire their own work. Using paperclay (regular ceramic clay with paper fibers added to it), Lorri teaches skills and techniques that encourage fragile and elongated forms that are often regarded as impossible to make and fire. After initial instruction on the methods of creating paperclay sculpture we will venture into Florence to be inspired by the Italian masters. The class will culminate in an actual raku firing of our work so that you will leave class with your finished sculpture. Painting the Tuscan Light Within and Without Jeanne Carbonetti Sep 8 - 15 2012 Painting Tuscan Light from Within : a uniquely Italian approach to expressive watercolor. Drawing from her heritage, her frequent visits to a beloved Italy and a long career pushing the boundaries of creative watercolor, Jeanne has developed a course which brings together the techniques for capturing Tuscan light in watercolor with the thematic power of one’s personal expression of that light. Tuscan light will be married to the light within as painters at every level, move in a new way through the craft of picture making in landscape, still life, and figure. Jeanne will demonstrate a different aspect of the craft each day, as well as provide ample amounts of individual attention. Delivered by Accident in Twilight The Art of Collage - with Nick Bantock Sep 15 - 22 2012 With Italy and all its rich history as our backdrop, environment and inspiration this workshop will focus on both collage techniques and the roots of creativity. Along with plenty of practical collage time, Nick will engage everyone in a variety of art discussions intended to provoke a better understanding of the nature of art and ways to circumnavigate creative block. In the second half of the workshop (after being bombarded with various projects) each person will be working on a single collage. Everything from starting techniques through to the handling of paint over numerous built-up layers will be addressed. In 1991 Nick Bantock was catapulted (kicking and screaming) into the limelight as his book Griffin and Sabine became a worldwide phenomenon. William Scott Jennings, a master plein air artist, will demonstrate his outdoor painting techniques and design concepts. Demonstrations will offer students an in-depth look into the artist's thought process and the technical applications needed to become proficient in plein air painting. The Perceptual Moment Master Class Landscape Intensive Stuart Shils Oct 27, 28, 29 2010 TUITION: $850 Actual cost: $1020 This workshop will concentrate on deepening and cultivating our visual sensitivity by looking critically at nature and painting with the loaded brush - aspiring to broad yet particular summations of form, naturalistic color and clarified visual mood. Emphasis will be placed on the perceptual processes in front of nature, the editorial response that follows in the head of the painter, the way that perception translates into paint and on shaking

up and/or questioning what is meant by “finish”. “Rather than bringing home conventionally finished trophies, I’ll encourage visual excitement, expansion of perceptual understanding and fun. PLEIN AIR PAINTING Sedona - Fall Colors Watercolor or Oil Betty Carr Nov 1 - 5 2010 Oct 31 - Nov 4 2011 TUITION: $575 Actual cost: $690 Learn to capture the beauty of light! Betty Carr teaches students to accurately portray the effect of light on any subject, both in oil and in watercolor. Students can work in either medium and will explore a variety of locations in beautiful Sedona. This week-long workshop begins directly following the 6th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival. During her workshop Betty begins each day with a demonstration/ lecture covering tools, techniques, brushwork, problems and solutions. Emphasis throughout the week is on organization and simplification of darks and lights, value and color relationships, edges, movement and mass to create a dynamic, coherent composition.

Betty Carr’s energetic style and enthusiasm for painting and teaching create an infectious atmosphere of adventure and “can do” among her students. Join Bobbie for a weeklong photographic workshop in Sedona, AZ. This new and exciting workshop will provide a total artistic experience, working in camera, on location and in a state of the art digital lab. Locations will include, a working horse ranch and the exquisite red rock landscape of Sedona. We will spend two and a half days in the field and an equal amount of time in the digital lab learning Bobbie's skillful techniques for creating fineart images. Her demonstrations will be inspirational in your efforts to produce dramatic and engaging work from the initial capture to final image. The focus will be on the important subject matter within the frame, removing distracting elements, composition, and tonal value/hue. Bobbie approaches her work on an emotional level, applying the principles she learned in her studies as an oil painter. You'll use Photoshop and NIK filter software to build upon your foundation layer by layer to achieve results far beyond your expectations!

New York based animator Dustin Grella will be in Sedona to host a five day stop-motion animation workshop. His short film, Prayers for Peace won both Best Animation and Audience Choice at the Sedona International Film Festival, as well as garnering worldwide attention in festivals such as the Annecy Animation Festival. His course will begin with a study in the art of storytelling because his philosophy is that people will watch absolutely anything as long as the story is compelling. Then he will introduce the students into the contemporary world of animation, including screenings of recent award winning films followed by critical discussions. You will then be taught some basic principles of stop-motion and then lead through some of the more complicated pieces of software. Depending on each students comfort level with the technology they can then choose either a high or low tech approach when creating their own stop-motion animation and complete the course with a new skill set and a short film. Students will have access to a fully equipped digital media lab for the last four days of the workshop.

CERAMICS/MOSAICS Indoor Wall Mosaics With Epoxy Resin Joanne & Art Hiscox Sept 13 - 17 2010 TUITION: $450 Actual cost: $540 Through hands-on, step-by-step instruction, Joanne and Art Hiscox will help you design and create a lightweight wall Mosaic for interior use, and then teach you how to apply of a coat of epoxy resin to the entire project. The epoxy resin encases the mosaic, provides an illusion of depth and increases the color intensity of the mosaic. Advanced students can broaden their experience by utilizing multiple levels and cut through mirrors. Student provided mosaic materials include glass, stone, tile, broken china and found

objects. Mosaic materials can also be purchased from the Instructors during class. $105 materials fee to instructors covers adhesive, grout, epoxy resin, 24” x 24” lightweight mosaic base with hanging hardware, equipment use, cutting services and table of free materials. Wall pieces with center mirrors will be 24” x 30” and will incur additional materials fees based on mirror size. Creative Work with Double Wall Vessels Tracy Ameen Mar 26 & 27 2011 TUITION: $225 (includes all materials) Actual cost: $270 Explore the mysterious and beautiful world of double-walled vessels in this hands-on, two-day workshop taught by Tracy Ameen, Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading double-wall pottery artist. Tracy will create a double wall vessel for each workshop participant and then instruct us on how to carve intricate designs on the outer walls. All skill levels will be able to participate, those with some throwing skills will be able to try their hand at double wall pots as Tracy will demonstrate her techniques. Clay Immersion Dennis Ott May 2 - 6 2011 TUITION: $500 (includes all materials) Actual cost: $600 Experience the versatility of clay. Professional ceramist and instuctor, Dennis Ott, will lead students of all levels through an adventure with clay. The week will include throwing on the potters wheel, extruding and using the slab roller for handbuilding. We will use finishing techniques such as stains, colored slips and various glazing techniques. We finish off the week with alternative firings in Saggar, Raku and Horse Hair as well as more traditional glaze firings. YEAR ROUND CLASSES The Art Experience Year round classes and Art Experiences offer Sedona residents and newcomers alike the chance to explore their creative, artistic instincts in the School of the Arts curriculum. Designed to reach out to all aspiring artists and students – all ages, all levels of learning - with instruction in a variety of mediums. Through demonstration and one-on-one time with the instructor, students will learn to throw a variety of forms on the potter’s wheel or use various techniques to create innovative hand-built work. Extruder, slab roller and forms are available to explore both functional and decorative work. A variety of glazing techniques and colors are available. The Monday and Tuesday classes will be geared toward beginners with the Wednesday class being offered for those with more experience.

Beginners are welcome to use this workshop to explore their interest in clay and ceramics.

This class will partner the live model with unusual arrangements of drapery and clothing to inspire images that range from the formal to the provocative. Think Matisse, Bonnard and Klimt. We’ll start with the theme of the ‘dressing room’ and move towards a modern installation art atmosphere. After a warm-up session of drawing,one pose will be explored for the remainder of each night. Photography will be encouraged so students can potentially continue to develop their work outside the classroom. All mediums will be welcome. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at oil painting this is the class for you. Susan Faust will guide your through all of the materials and techniques to help you to get a good start at oil painting. The class will include frequent demonstrations and lots of individualized instruction. Students will paint from still-life and photo reference and will learn basics of composition, color theory and methods of paint application. This class will be fun and allow the beginning student to gain the confidence necessary to go on to more advanced levels. Drawing experience is required.

PhotoFest Summer Camp for Youth (ages 6 - 14) Rick Dembow & Nancy Lattanzi $140 per day or $375 for all three days! Theatre Studio (includes materials and lunch) July 21, 22 and/or 23 8:30 - 5:30 This program will coincide with the first annual Sedona Photofest, where photographers will flock to participate in seminars and field trips led by expert instructors. In this camp students will have the opportunity to learn about the camera, what to look for when choosing subjects, as well as computer skills to edit images. Each student will graduate from the camp receiving a Photofest Camp Certificate and an 8 x10 color photo of their best shot! The campers will be in the best of hands with instructors Rick Dembow, former Senior Photojournalist for the New York Post and New York Daily News and his wife Nancy Lattanzi, an Art Specialist who has created a successful Art Studio for children in Sedona. The camp will provide a casual, fun way to learn, while exploring the magnificent Sedona landscape, animals, flowers and local people with a camera. Healthy lunch & snacks will be provided. Limit 20 children per day.
