01 WATERFRONT REGENERATION

[ Regenerate a brownfield with memory]

Location: Huaian, China

Type: Academic, Urban design- Group work with Zhou Yiwen Architecture renovation - Individual work

Role: Leader

Contribution: Conceptual design 85% , Drawing 100%

Level: 2020 fall

Time: 23.11.2020 - 1.17.2020

Supervisor: Tang Peng (tangpeng@seu.edu.cn)

The project is located in a waterfront brownfield in Huaian, which uesd to be a famous and prosperous shipbuilding area.

However, with the fall of shipbuilding, not only the oringinal red brick buildings are abandoned, but also the factory workers and bustling collective life are gone. Nowadays, apart from some old farmers struggling to stay here, though having a good view of the inner canal, everthing seems to be inanimate and decayed.

The project aims to regenerate this area, to bring back and rebuild the memory and spirit of shipbulding industry, continuing the precious industrial culture in Huaian.

The project is divided into two parts, the first part is an urban design of the whole area, and the second part is focused on the most important building, the shipyard. The strategy and conception are continuous in the design.

Site Analysis: Time

Site Analysis: Space

The population depends on shipbuilding development. After the company close down, most people moved away and the site became browfield.

The site is located on the edge of city, surrounded by residential district. Activating this brownfield can greatly increase the connection between the residents and the waterfront.

Original Site

Connection Systems

The fragmented urban space is conneted by two systems, deck and turnel, and provides the buildings with multiple entrances.

Traffic Systems

There are three traffic systems in the site, walk track - provided with the beautiful waterfront view, fast track - transformed from the oringinal road, logistics - supporting the functions in the site.

02 COMMUNITY FOOD MARKET

[ Explore a new typology for modern life ]

Location: Nanjing, China

Type: Academic, Individual

Level: 2021 spring

Time: 12.06.2021- 25.09.2021

Supervisor: Liu Zichen (liuzch@csjtz.com)

Going to the food market is a daily routine for many Chinese families. Therefore, food market is an important public space in Chinese traditional life. Interesting conversations and flexible trades are happening here.

However, with the rise of internet, food delivery is rapidly taking place of food market among the youngsters. Mess and inconvinience become two main reasons for people who refuse food market.

The project aim to explore a new typology of food market, which can meet the demanding of modern life while continuing the rich flavor of life.

Starting from studying the history, the vitality of traditional "Street Market" and the efficiency of modern "Centralized Market" are applied into the strategy. Meanwhile, functions for different type of people in community are considered . The inner street become the stimulation for the whole space, and communication and encountering are happening here again.

Surroundings

The site is surrounded by residential buildings with commercial on the ground. There is a reserved brick building on the east and a six-storey hotel on the south.

To continue the flow and attract more people, a east-west access is cutted in the middle of the site.a small square is kept as the main entrance on the northeast of the site, and the access is slightly twisted.

MAIN ROAD

Rich activities happen in the channel, apart from the main function, food market and affiliated functions, there are other community funcitons like library, indoor garden, outdoor film, temperary market and so on.

Considering about the sunlight, floors are set back, which benefits both the people's experience in north part and the growth of vegetetion in south part.

Connections are made between north and south, activating each other. Besides, the reserved brick building is also connected to the main building.

In the end, a clear and open facade covers the whole building, to face the chaotic surroudings and welcome the peoples to enter.

03 TRIDIMENSIONAL COMMUNITY

[ Continue the traditional courtyard lifestyle ]

Location: Nanjing, China

Type: Academic, Group with Zhang Bang, Wang Jiawei

Role: Leader

Contribution: Investigation 50% , Conceptual design 80% , Drawing 95%

Level: 2021 spring

Time: 1.3.2021 - 28.04.2021

Supervisor: Marco Trisciuoglio (marco.trisciuoglio@polito.it)

Bao Li (baoli@seu.edu.cn)

Courtyard house is a traditional architectutual style for Chinese families. In this project, the He-Hua-Tang block is one of the most typicals in Nanjing.

However, during the last decades, with the rise of population and the change of the social structure, He-Hua-Tang block has partly changed. The original continuous courtyard house which was owned by one big family is now cut into several parts because the owners change. The block is extremely crowded now.

On account of the worsening situation, many local residents chose to escape from this place, and on the contrary, a lot of tenants flood in, which further harmed the social structure and community connection.

So in this project, we try to improve the contemprary living situation while continuing the traditional courtyard lifestyle. The spontanous appendages in the site were noticed and became the teacher for us. We give two strategies: tridimensional, to enlarge the residential area, and reserve zone, to give a further develop space for reisdents.

18

Population Analysis (Author: Wang Jiawei)

Original Block Plan

The population in the site is extremely high. There are about 14 extended families, 20 nuclear families, 12 conjugal families and 20 singles in this area.

Density & Property Analysis

Density change 1929-2020

Property change 1929-2020

As time passes, the typology in site shows a trend to be more fragmentized because of the increase of population and the change of property. Big courtyard houses were cut into several parts. What's more, appendages grew around houses, which increased the density of this area.

PHASE Ⅰ

Residents move into the new house. Several house types are provided for different families including extended family, nuclear family, conjugal family and the single. The private gardens are empty for people to do some changes, but the public gardens which are finished become the places for people to meet.

With time passing by, the residents may have some new ideas on their reserve zone to meet their own needs like a study room or a pavilion for laundry. The private gardens and terraces may become all kind of interesting function. And the fixed metal structure make sure of the stability of the appendages.

04 ATRIUM RENOVATION

[ Make the atrium the center of the building]

Location: Nanjing, China

Type: Academic, Individual

Level: 2021 fall

Time: 1.12.2021- 31.12.2021

Supervisor: Liu Zichen (liuzch@csjtz.com)

The renovation project is located at the architecture department building in Southeast University.

The building is the studio for the undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in architecture. Everything in architecuture students' life happen here, inluding study and activities.

However, on account of the long history, the building is not suitable for the communication of students. The large atrium is wasted in most cases. Lack of public space, isolation of each storeys and no appropriate space for events become the main problems in this site.

To solve these problems, I apply gentle strategies to activate the atrium. First I change the entrance and move them into the atrium. As a result, the flow is brought into the atrium. Second, I break the oringinal grid facade and insert colorful platforms which connect to each other. Finally, I arranged a stage with cover, provide a place to hold events.

25

Surroudings: The architecture department building is located on the southeast of the campus, next to the bounding wall.

Flow: The main entrance of the building is on the west and the flow is mainly from the south gate and east gate.

SUB FUNCTIONS UNDERGRADUATE POSTGRADUATE

Function: Two main volumes are studios for architecture undergraduates and postgraduates respectively.

Entrance: The entrance of the building and the atrium are different, which leads to the negletion of the atrium.

Communication: The traffic cores are on the two sides of the building, which makes the storeys isolated from each other.

Activity: The building is shaped as U, which is perfect for performance. Activities are held in the atrium.
