SAILING I am sailing, I am sailing home again across the sea. I am sailing stormy waters, To be near you, to be free. SAILING by Rod Stewart 1975.2 Academic / 2012 / 2rd year studio Instructors // Hong-Tao Hsu Program // Sailing club Loacation // Suzhou, China Area // 3368.3 square meter

Joao Luis Carriho da Graca (Portalegre,1952) refers to territory as the main basis of design. Territory includes the contour lines, the crests of the mountain ranges, and the natural promontories, defining the limits and the formal structure of anthropic space. It’s a concern in this project to refer to territory explained by Graca. A building for sailing and other water sports is to be designed far away from cities. So the territory here can be observed in its original way, of much more complexity. Guided by territory, the project need a more adapting way to nature. And at the same time the entity may emerge from surrounding. So this inspires me of a dual strategy to territory: adapting while emerging.

21

Masterplan

Adapting To Territory The interface of mountain and lake are given, distinct from plain land in city. The design of sailing club is to accommodate or connect elements from them. From the mountain comes contour lines, crests, roads by hillsides, villages, people, vehicles. From the lake comes breeze, tides, island, glistening water, boats, fish.

Based on the original interfaces, sight analysis is brought to the selected levels, assuring nothing blocks the view during the visiting route. The analysis is based on these statistic: human resolution view is 15 degree, effective view is 15 to 30 degree.

Rise from mountain and fall into lake. The upper part of building is controlled by resolution view on the crest. A continuous interface from mountain to lake. The lower part of building is controlled by resolution view on the hillside.

Integrate the interface of building, mountain and lake. The inner part is referred to resolution view. Adapt the inner space to the integrated interface. Form the route from mountain to lake, making territory internally continuous.

Observing from territory A sharp angle implies the entrance to the road. And when you look from lakeside, it’s the focus to guide all the boats.

Emerging From Territory

The language will be distinct from nature. Observing from territory, the building is a landmark. Observing from building, the territory image would be integral and unblocked, owning to the section design of sight.

A Dialogue Between Adapting And Emerging: The Inner Space The inner space is designed adapting to mountain. thus each floor is connected with nature in one way. The orienting entrance leads people to the center space of ground floor, the wading pool “mirror”, other spaces like restaurant and theater are set surround. The inner space intact with nature through the “mirror”. The basement floor can be reached from stairs beside “mirror”. Then we come to the spring embraced by stone. Walking through the tunnel-like passage, we finally see the artificial beach. It’s an experience from open to secret, and back to open.

Unrestricted View Between Space And Territory Direct unblocked sight can be gained from every level. Indirect way is given by the “mirror”. Observing from different position, we will have different view of territory in the “mirror”. The way of observation could be delicate through direct and indirect sight.

Overlapping Experience Of Space And Territory

Because of the dialogue between adapting and emerging, space and territory are overlapped in many ways, which could be explained in the sections.

At this step people participated to compose an ideal housing plan with the components and the magnetic board. Then we made the interpretation of housing type design according to their draft models and oral descriptions, optimised design.

It turned out pretty successful, the outputs were various according to everybody’s distinct needs, and under some instructions they had the great sense to manage design.

A SYMBIOSIS PATTERN OF TRADITION AND MORDERN

Academic / 2015 / 4th year graduation design Instructors // Zhang Song, Tian Baojiang Program // Urban regeneration development study, urban design Loacation // Xi'an, China Area // 35 square kilometer

As one of the oldest Four Great Ancient Capitals in China and important joint of the Silk Road, Xi’an has became the center of GuanZhong plain. With the evolution of technology, as one of china’s metropolis, the old town is facing with various problems. The belt highway make close connection between sub-centers districts, while the central old Town is still under great pressure of transportation and polulation. Due to the physiographic factors the subway construction is limited, the contradiction between pedestrian and vehicles is getting more and more acute. How to recognize the particularity of the built environment along the area of the walls and how to protect it, how to inherit traditional culture as well as space spirit through shaping the new place, are the two essential challenges of this project.

Xi'an is not only an ancient city, but also the city pattern of Ming & Qing dynasty has been preserved completed. As the important material carrier of history and culture, the city wall with the space along it record the evolution process of Xi’an, with important historical and cultural value. Besides, it carries emotional history and collective memory, which makes it become the significant symbol of the “nostalgia” of contemporary Xi’an’s people.

The notion of historical preservation is not about historical building itself, more importantly is about surroundings of hiatorical architecture within the holistic living environment. In contemporary Xi'an, particularly in offical historical protection area, residents have little consciousness to take the whole situation into consideration of protection. More seriously, private property and the profit rate trump all the other rights we can think of. Citizens need to fight for their real living rights to the city. Another issue is that the informal building without regular permissions leech on to the offical protective historical building. The field of tradtional cultrure has been squeezed.

In the process of urbanization, those who originally lived by the sea gradually left home, seeking development. It is a common case in many Chinese villages where fertile soils are desserted because of scarcity of labour, while metropolises constantly absorb all kinds of resources like black holes, ,expandexcessively, and become overwhelmed. In this project, a small town named Jinshan is eroded by the urbanization. To more extent, invisible boundaries block most interactions between the oceanside town and inner land. Therefore, eliminating boundaries is to reconcile conflicts and redefine the relation between them. Series of rurban areas are selected as an alternative solution for borderlines development which make a soft transition between city and nature.

Different volumes of buildings are arranged by different subjects of function. Different types of green land in response are arranged in response to the site context. Multiscale paths connect important buildings with public space.

Five parts are designed to build the connection between seaside and the inner land, by reconstructing the infrustructure and other faclities.

Combine the Chinese and Western traditional green-dweling pattern, form various eco-friendly environment.

The landscape system, the greenland system and different scales of building are combined with the public space. Different elements form varities of interfaces, which lead people from inner land to the sea.

According to the local people's habits and customs, continus public spaces are integrated as a network.

Plant coverage and ground are consistent with the functions of building.

A MOVABLE FEAST Memory is a drag as people recall repeatedly to demonstrate the existence of cities.Invisible views determine visible views. ——Italo Calvino" Invisible Cities"

Our world is between the visible and invisible state. Because of the gaze of our own and the other people’s s reading speed up the differences in memory and fusion, thus forming cognitive conflict. In the paraphrase of “I “, was the "narrative" of the city.

Overlapping subjectivity

Inspired by the famous painting by Piet Cornelies Mondrian, I tried to reinterpretate this Masterpiece from an architectural angle. Varies of Phenomenon of architecture——Multifunction, path, breakthrough, penetration, extending........ could be included in an abstract visual work. To blur the boundary of external and internal.

Composition

The movable components represent the story lines. And because of the movability, an established exhibition roomcould be transformed into different formations.

1. Open platform and each connection of functioning room - make the building derive from a natural space; 2.The pillars extend from the bottom to top, and the functioning room adhere on the main core barrel. Besides, the establishment of pillars at different heights will provide the grey experience between the different levels. 3. Components within the elevation difference and transportation system as a whole fuzzy and vertical dimension as "boundary layer", give the possibility of "growth", reflect the naturalness of concrete.

Structure development ---------Explore the possibilities of verticality

The structural model analog the construction process which explores the possibities of verticality. The structural system is made up of core barrels and pillar grid, firm and full of flexibility.
