Automated Pick And Place Systems


Introduction Pick and place is the act of picking up things from one location and placing them in another. This system is required for assembly line packing, machine alignment, empty picking, inspection etc. This can be done by robot or gantry method. Automated Pick and Place systems have become a specialized branch in robotics, pick and place devices are usually mounted on a stand, strategically positioned to do their job in the work table. High speed pick and place robots can increase efficiency while reducing production costs and ergonomics issues.

Pick And Place Used For

There are four main ways that pick and place robots are used: 

Assembly- Pick and place robots are usually used in this segment where they grab a manufacturing piece from a conveyor belt and then transfer the same to another conveyor belt. The best example in Electronic manufacturing Industry where they can be used for assembling PCB board

Packaging: Similar to assembly process, a pick and place robot grabs a piece on an incoming conveyor belt and, instead of assembling the part, the robot places it in a packaging container at a high speed. Bin Picking: Pick and place system can take grab even if the robots equipped with the advanced vision system mix the components from the bin at random and put them on the conveyor for production

Inspection: Stellar vision systems can watch products moving on an incoming conveyor belt and detect defective products, and then a pick and place a robot which can remove the defective product before it reaches the final phases of production

How Pick And Place Actually Controlled

A simple pick and place system can control the motion of the end effectors

The motion may be to using hydraulic fluid, i.e., hydraulic fluid under pressure, to the drive the robot, or using pneumatic motion. Using pressurized air to cause mechanical motion

The most effective way is to use a motor to provide the necessary motion
