ALBERTO CAMPO BAEZA Almirante 4, 5ºB 28004 Madrid, SPAIN PH. N. 0034 917 010 965 estudio@campobaeza.com To whom it may concern: I am pleased to recommend PABLO HERNANDO DEL AMO after having him as a student during the Design Studio course “NYC” (in which he was qualified With Honors) at UPM ETSAM. Through this time, Pablo has proved to be a mature, resourceful, pragmatic and extremely curious student. Besides, his hard-working and objective-oriented attitude, acquired through his architectural studies, make Pablo an excellent person you can always count on. Pablo has been an overall excellent student with powerful insight and good analytical abilities. His communicative skills are also fairly good, enabling him to be clearly someone to consider in a team who will contribute a lot with an interesting vision and experiences from his academic, personal and professional background. Another noticeable strengthens of Pablo Hernando is his motivation. He loves architecture, shows passion and energy in all he makes and likes to face up new architectural challenges. Furthermore, he has demonstrated to be a very liable student and autonomous in order to fulfill with the established deadlines for each topic he has been assigned, and to conceptually express his proposals as well. I recommend with any doubt this brilliant and young professional in the certainty that has demonstrated me along all the time, given his high-qualified profile towards the architecture design and it is my belief that his capacities will highly recompense the trust put on him. He is an exceptional person. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you want further references, it will be a pleasure. Respectfully,

ALBERTO CAMPO BAEZA

Burgos

X VI century mansion in the north of Burgos devastated in a fire. The plot has certain slope and the ground floor is a semi-basement, opened on one side to the garden and the mountains. The best option then is to introduce light from five new skylights. The ancient stone arches are replicated in white concrete and two new staircases are installed by splitting the original one, also made of stone. Everything evolves around the attempt to introduce light in the rooms and on the first floor, as in John Soane’s museum house or in Higueras’ Rascainfiernos.

TIENZA & M A U R E - M E R C È 2 7 Restoration / 2021 - 2022 / Milano

L ocated in the heart of the Gothic Quarter in the city center of Barcelona a building of five floors is restorated. The whole interiors are redistributed reinforcing the structure where needed and looking for new opportunities in the actual building. The final design includes new plans for every floor, a new and designed elevator and the staircase around it, the restoration of the entrance (which included preservation of ancient ruins that were found during the project in a hidden basement), and a new rooftop that includes a little swimming pool. The project’s aim is to make the best possible use spaces obtaining finally eight houses with three rooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, living and dining room and one or two balconies in each one. The materials are selected to create a peaceful as well as cozy space for living.

The final design was an attempt to show the principles of the studio, building a structure of iron and concrete where each material works on its optimal way, concrete in compression and iron in traction, a concept that has always been an important part of the studio’s projects.

T he new Marketing Suite designed for Goldman Sachs in Corso Vittorio Emanuele in Milan is a space that combines informal work and meeting areas with traditional spaces, responding to the needs of new models of working spaces. Space is configured to allow people to move fluently between the welcome area, a lounge, and a meeting room up to the working area. The organization and design of the spaces arise from the constraints imposed by the existing building. The presence of beams of reduced height and the consequent perception of a fragmented space has stimulated the design of devices that conceal the beams themselves: the reflective metal paneling hides the structural elements and increases the perception of the spatial dimension.

A Q U I S - E S C Ó H O N Félix O RCandela E D- - Raquis M E/ N2022T I/ OIESARQ N IV Premio E utopia, Dystopia and Utopia; three phases distributed over time that only make sense in this order and as a whole. In Escó there is no Utopia without Dystopia or Eutopia. This village that was abandoned in 1968 is now the “raquis” of a project that proposes to hold on to the existing and study the opportunities of what time has considered perennial. In the physical sense, walls remain like lines distributed along a hill, full of windows, doors and balconies that offer infinite imaginaries. Besides, in the memory remains everything that once worked and made this town a fruitful and self-sufficient community, which suddenly had to stop due to external facts. Utopia is born from the superposition of these two phases. A project whose purpose is to project exclusively with the “raquis” and its endless opportunities. If time and nature have considered keeping walls and their holes, the new community has to learn to develop over them.

Iopen n “Cinema Paradiso” the whole village gathers at an cinema to enjoy a film by the sea, even a few the sailors glance from their boats. Cinema, plaza, villagers and sea come together in a most memorable scene. At the Plage du Palais des Festival a great screen is projected as a landmark, transforming the cityscape. During the day, a pure prism; at night, a support for audiovisuals and movie screenings. Seen from afar, not only is it accessible to all, it makes the whole city take part in the festival.

T he initial intuitions of the project were related to those landscapes where natural and human agents are in conflict, La Pedrera Vallsallent is an abandoned limestone quarry, proposed as a landfill. A landfill of inerts is nothing more than a cemetery of architectures, the effect of our architecture causes the need to find spaces to “bury” it, a process currently not considered at all when carrying out a project. The aim is to give a second life to these “dead architectures”, and since the landfill is going to be carried out, it is proposed to design it, organizing it by phases generating voids in the interior.

3

T he recycling line of a landfill separates and shreds the waste, obtaining different granulometries and storing them in piles. The concept of “heap”, whether of waste, sand... is understood as the static form and in equilibrium that a heap of units of the same “element” reaches when they are dumped from above. Depending on its materiality, texture, adherence, humidity... this heap will have a more or less slender proportion in equilibrium.

F ines will be poured first and will be moistened depending on the slenderness of the desired “pile”. The aggregates will be mixed with lime, forming a conglomerate poured on top of the fines. Once it has dried, the fines will be extracted, generating an empty space with the shape of the “piles” of fines, a form that is structurally stable by nature.

F ollowing Frank Lloyd Wright’s ambition in Taliesin West, Arizona, the course aim was to project a shelter in “the most beautiful place in the world” as said by the architect. The design goes deeper in ephmeral and nomad architecture looking for multifunctionality and reversibility. The final project is formed by a system composed by identic wood and cloth pieces, that are able to construct a wide variety of spaces responding to the neccesities of the user, adding the concept of transportability and fast re-construction to the design.

S tudying in first chance the parameters of confort (humidity, temperature and radiation), the air pollution related to CO, NO2, O3, PM2.5-PM.10 and Covid-19, and the different conditions and artifacts related to water in the city of Mendoza in Argentina, the result comes as a complex model with multiple layers that have the ability to function on their own but also in coordination with the others, creating then diverse projects that work together in order to answer to the different necessities of the city. After working on the inflection points and relations etablished in the model, the final projects compounds a University Campus with agricultural production and science investigation. R elated to the forgotten symbolism of architectural form, the project is located both in Córdoba and Salto del Jándula, apparently two opposite places, but that will be con-

nected by the transfer of matter extracted from a quarry in the second to Miraflores’ peninsula in the first. The initial investigation pretends to detect hotspots with certain characteristics on the route from Salta del Jándula to Córdoba. Studying them isolated, the idea is to go deep into their urban and territorial dynamics in order to discover action areas. A quarry, the village of La Lancha and a huge abandoned plot in Córdoba..

NotreDame Paris antiquity and an aspiration to touch the sky, on the one hand by growing in height and on the other by the sustitution of big walls for huge windows that transform light into color, some investigations are carried out about the device “window”, synesthesia and the sensorial phenomenom of iridescence. The aim of the project will be bringing to the top the initial aspirations of the temple. In relation with the iridescent phenomenon, a mutable interior will be made in harmony with light and natural agents. To maximize the effect, the absolute nude of the cathedral is added to the proposal: the removal of all the walls and elements of the construction not necessary for its support . Minimum level of light obstruction and thus a formal exaltation of the connection with the sky. An ancient milestone is born.

S tarting from the abstract ideas of “air” and “co-habitation”, the project is developed attending to both external and internal parameters. The system is composed by vertical wooden slats that open and close depending on the user`s desires and the external climate. It is nothing but a mere set of squares fitted into the plot. The spatial distribution creates different opportunities based on a privacy gradient and air´s permeability. Outer square continent of an interior square, semi-exterior spaces and paths, inner square with common use square, displacing five private uses in height and a humid square with two communication squares.

A rchitecture supposes a point in which the interests of contemporary archeologyand and geology of media converge, being understood therefore like the media or medium that will serve as bridge of step between the different fields. The object of study will be the Cathedral of Justo , a singular work built from the waste and that is also known as “La Catedral de la Basura”. In order to develop the research, an anarchic approach to scientific methods and results, or in other words, a more anarchic view of them will be adopted, releasing them and making both a tool for scientific study, as a source of inspiration and a basis for creative freedom. This position leads to build a digital clone through photogrammetry that allows the planner to re-transform this reality back.
