Mikael Johansson, born in ’87, is a Swedish Photographer currently based in London. Experienced in the fields of art, street and commercial photography ranging from product/e-commerce to editorial and fashion.
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY, IN PARTICULAR FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY?
I have always been expressing myself creatively, whether through painting or music, so photography was always a part of that and something I decided to pursue. I ended up working mostly in fashion because it lets me express myself and ideas with other likeminded people. WHAT IS YOUR MAIN SOURCE OF INSPIRATION, WHAT INFLUENCES YOU?
I find inspiration in other artists, illustrators and music but by far I tend to find a lot of inspiration by walking around and looking at people. Random things, events and the ordinary. WHAT CAMERA DO YOU USE FOR THE MAJORITY OF YOUR WORK?
I work quite a lot with film, both medium format and 35 but mostly I tend to switch between a Voigtlander Bessa and Canon 5D WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO WORK WITH...WHAT’S THE DREAM?
I would really like to work on an art project together with Kim Gordon. If I get the chance to shoot an editorial with Andreja Pejic that would be exciting. Other than that I think it’s more about the team you work with and the specific project rather than someone specific, but with that said, if Hedi Slimane wants to take me under his wings that would be alright.
IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE LENS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT IS IT?
That would have to be a good prime lens, something like a 50mm f/1.2. At the end of the day you don’t need a fancy pen to write, you just need a pencil. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC STYLE?
Maybe dystopian, quite minimalistic? FAVOURITE SUBJECT TO SHOOT?
People. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER?
I get to do what I love, at least some-times. ...AND THE WORST?
When I do what I love it doesn’t always pay. AND FINALLY IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Probably just to try not to think too much.
LOTS OF PEOPLE TALK AND FEW OF THEM KNOW A project portraying young men, questioning the portrait and the clichĂŠs that we are trapped in.
WE ARE MEN
“This work aims to question different ways of seeing by portraying the models in their personal space. The models are surrounded by their own environment, cynically capturing what might be described as the only two things worth having: youth and beauty.

ZAHRA CAPPELLO
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A STYLIST, HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY?
Honestly? I didn’t. I studied languages at university - Arabic and Persian - absolutely nothing to do with fashion or art. It was 2002 when I started my career as a stylist. I first began working in film, assisting a costume director. I began to meet tonnes of people, gaining contacts and before I knew it, I was assisting on music videos, commercials and feature films. WOW. THATS AMAZING! WHATS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
Well, everyday is different really. I love the job of being a stylist, you are completely involved. Its an amazing feeling when you see clothes and people being transformed. I think it’s the clothes along with the model combined that create the magic; the two separate can be ordinary. ...AND THE WORST?
Um, I’d have to say personal hygiene. It’s a very upclose and personal job! WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION?
Well, coming from a costume background, I was always surrounded by the past and period-style fashion. Personally, I feel that’s what fashion is though; it is a very cyclical industry.
That’s what I like, you’re able to form something new from something that may already exist. HAVE YOU WORKED ANYWHERE OTHER THAN LONDON?
Well I’ve always been based in London, but yes I’ve worked all over!... Spain, Greece, South Africa, L.A and more. FAVOURITE SHOOT YOU HAVE WORKED ON?
Ooh, thats hard! I’d have to say it was when I was costume assistant on “Son Of Rambow” in 2007. It was so much fun styling for a period piece, and the costume director was extremely pleased with my work styling all the background artists that were featured. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM SHOOT / COLLABORATION?
Oh, I’d have to say Acne! I’m a complete sucker for their aesthetic style. I think they combine minimalism and maximalism so beautifully.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OWN STYLE?
Definately irratic. FAVOURITE ITEM OF CLOTHING THAT YOU OWN?
I have a pair of Eley Kishimoto sandals, they’d probably be my favourite. FINALLY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE STARTING OUT IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY? PERHAPS TRYING TO BECOME A STYLIST LIKE YOURSELF?
I’d say just try and assist as many people as possible - that’s exactly what I did. Be really willing to learn, and dont limit yourself. Don’t tell yourself; this is the type of stylist I want to be, go out and try the different routes within the industry. Experience is key!
