Melanie Scanlin grew up in the southeast and finds inspiration in the architectural diversity of Atlanta, from industrial buildings that are now being repurposed for both commercial and residential use to the contemporary architecture of the High Museum. From an early age she knew that she would only be happy in a creative field but also yearned for something structured, Interior Design seemed like a natural path for her in college. She is inspired by the challenge of the design problem and finding a solution that does more than just

solve the problem, one that engages the end-user. Her passion for interiors spans beyond architecture and includes furniture, selections, and sustainable solutions. While in school she worked full time holding various positions that contributed to her design vocabulary and strong work ethic. In the field she would like to use design to improve the quality of life for the end-

user. She graduated from Brenau University Cum Laude with a Masters in Interior Design and Bachelors of Fine Arts and is a student member of ASID.

I design by imagining the experience of moving through a space, exploring the emotional responses to the volumes, shapes, and light. bio & design philosophy

concept The goal is to create an environment that would make the collection the accessory of the space. To achieve this neutral finishes and contemporary furnishings were selected. Upon entering the space shoppers are greeted with an abstract version of Oscar de la Renta’s signature first initial. Inspiration from the iconic O continues throughout the space in the curves of the ceiling, floors, finishes, and fabric patterns. The neutral finishes include white, taupe, and gray. Furniture and decorative light fixtures were kept to a minimum and chosen for their minimal, contemporary designs. Fabric wallcoverings reminiscent of silk add warmth and interest throughout the space. The soffit, floor, custom furniture and displays create a curvilinear pattern throughout the sales floor. A change in color from gray to off-white stone flooring and warm dark gray paint draws the eye to the curved walls displaying clothing and accessories. The flooring changes from stone to wood as you transition from the retail space to the fitting rooms subtly adding warmth. Working together the chosen design elements create an inviting yet subtle backdrop for the womenswear and accessory lines of Oscar de la Renta.

concept For the Acino restaurant located in Atlanta the client’s goal is to create a warm and inviting space that will focus on his food and wine parings. The color of wine and shapes of the

grape and vine are the source of inspiration. Upon entering, you are pulled into the space by the undulating curves of the walls and ceiling. Finishes in varying shades of red and copper contrast white found on the ceiling, furnishings, and light fixtures creating visual impact. A semi transparent material separating the foyer from the dining area provides privacy for the diners while giving those entering a hint of the space. The clean lines of the selected furnishings balance the curves of the interior architecture. Cork mosaic flooring throughout the dining and bar areas further integrates the menu’s focus on wine. In addition to the atheistic benefit, the high-density flooring is sustainable, provides sound absorption,

insulation and is suitable for high traffic areas. Wallcovering imitative of fabric at the bar and in the bathroom add warmth to the sleek settings. Fiery red paint selections envelope the dining areas. Together the selected finishes and furnishings accent and punctuate the interior space creating a welcoming and visually stimulating space for diners.

concept Venture Bank, located in Washington State, strives to represent the culture of the Northwest area with an attitude as Independent as You. The interior design of the bank is inspired by their organic and fluid lines of their logo and the company philosophy. The color palette draws from the green logo and Washington State’s natural beauty. A combination of green, silver, and gray create a space where

Venture’s clients can feel comfortable banking. Inspired by the logo the fluid lines of the soffit and teller line differentiate the area from the mostly linear layout. Indirect cove lighting in the soffit illuminates a majority of the public space. Glass panels provide a sense of confidentiality to clients, while letting in natural light from the lobby. Frosted glass used for the concierge, teller line, and check writing desk countertops, logo signage, and lower panes of the panels unifies the overall space. The break room compensates for the lack of natural light through light colors utilized for the flooring, laminate, and corian. Together the layout, materials, and furniture create an environment that represents Ventures unique approach to banking.

concept The process used to form the geometry of paper art… scoring, folding, cutting, and piercing… is the inspiration for the interior of the Museum of Paper Art & Design. The interior designer’s approach to the design of MOPAD is similar to the creation of paper art. Like the paper artist, the interior designer explores the possibilities of different shapes formed by angles, curves, and shadows. Comparable to the paper artist’s ability to create objects that have a

different affect on each viewer, the interior designer's manipulation of the space produces a different experience for each museum visitor. The museum’s dynamic interior forms produce interest, energizing the visitor as they move through the space. A neutral color palette provides a subtle backdrop for the objects on display. The floor plan in conjunction with selected finishes helps to guide the visitor along their tour.
