From the President

As we head towards the start of Season 2013, we are well set for the challenges that are ahead. One of the key components of a successful club is stability, both on and off the field. We have had a stable board and Club administration for several years now, and the relationships built with all our key partners, including the MCC, AFL, sponsors and corporate supporters, will assist in ensuring long term We have been, stability.

and will continue to be, focused and working hard on the key issues to make our club successful and sustainable. Don McLardy

On the field, following a complete overhaul of the football department twelve months ago, we have a settled, united and fully focused football department, led by Mark Neeld. As dictated by the competitive nature of football clubs, we have also significantly overhauled our playing list with what I consider to be strong decision making following a clear plan, and I congratulate all those involved in what may prove to have been a very significant draft and trade period for our club. I would also like to formally recognise the contribution of our retiring and delisted players, and wish them well in their future careers.

We have been, and will continue to be, focused and working hard on the key issues to make our club successful and sustainable. We have a sound and well documented business plan, and strategies for key areas such as membership and fan creation, community, facilities, commercial, list management and team performance. We continually have new ideas and concepts to discuss and analyse, many put forward from our membership base. We have learned from errors of the past, and we also continually look at other clubs and other codes around the world for ideas and innovations that may assist us. We are very grateful for the continued great support of our 36,000 members, our dedicated band of volunteers, and, of course our 470 Foundation Heroes, who have all proved critical in assisting us to establish this sound base, and continue to play a vital role. But, as I said, ours is an extremely competitive environment, and all future challenges should not be underestimated. Our club also acknowledges the work done by the AFL in recognising the equalisation issue, and we welcome the 2

ongoing debate. This is a complex issue for the AFL as a whole, including all supporters. If we are to ensure the position of the AFL as the premier sporting code in Australia – as our indigenous game should be – we need to park our Club biases and address honestly the issues and what is best for the game as a whole. The Melbourne Football Club will be taking this approach. The AFL investigation into our club has been an incredibly high profile one, and for many involved has proven to be a difficult and trying time personally. The impact on our club has been massive and in many ways, the damage is hard to measure. At Melbourne, we have been fortunate to have within our ranks experienced and skilful personnel to advise and guide us through this trying period. A range of people, including the board, CEO and senior coach and many others within the Club – have in the main dealt with these varying and complex issues competently and professionally, and this is a reflection of where our club is at. Our position of not providing a running commentary remained constant throughout the investigation, and we will continue down this path now that it is over. We believe that this will be in the best interests of our club in the long term, and we are looking forward to starting the 2013 season on a positive note and as a united organisation. There is no doubt that many have contributed to this positivity, and to them I offer my sincere thanks and gratitude. I would also like to thank my fellow board members, Club staff and the many members and supporters who have afforded me such great encouragement and assistance since I became President following Jim’s untimely illness and death. Like all of you, I am passionate about this Club, and I believe we have a sound base. I am very hopeful that this sound base will prove to be a launching pad for sustained success over the next few seasons. Thank you all for your ongoing support.

From the CEO

Way back in the 1920s, a famous baseball stalwart - William Wrigley Junior - stated “Baseball is too much of a business to be a sport, and too much of a sport to be a business”. Whilst much has changed in sport in the almost century since, perhaps reflecting the frustration of a successful businessman’s efforts to win games of baseball, the essence remains as it was then. Sport and business do intersect. You cannot hope to succeed (ie win) consistently without a clear understanding of your objectives, and how you are going to achieve them. This process is articulated in a strategy, which must be clearly understood and well communicated. Each year, the Board and Management of the Club agree to a number of strategic priorities, all aligned to a plan which we call the ‘Red and Blueprint’ which was developed during 2009. This plan is regularly reviewed and reassessed, given the changing nature of our sport, and the opportunities and challenges that will emerge. In 2013, we have agreed to ten strategic priorities. These are as follows: A. Delivering Operational Performance 1. Deliver 2013 performance expectations. This priority relates to ensuring that we manage critical issues, risk mitigation, financial forecasting, cost compliance, and of course achieve expectations from a team performance perspective. B. Building a Strong Club 2. Define, communicate and institutionalise values linked to Club purpose and strategy. We strongly focus on leadership across the organisation, including our young player leadership group, all aligned to agreed values and standards. C. Growing our Profit Model 3. Leading the development of a more equalised AFL revenue sharing model, including fixturing. Revenue equalisation is the most important debate in AFL football in terms of competitive balance since the introduction of drafting and salary cap over 25 years ago. The current financial model does not work. The gap is widening, and this will ultimately damage the competition and the game. We have done a significant amount of work in this area and we will seek to play a key role in this debate. 4. Develop a customer relationship model that recognises the demographic and generosity of MFC supporters. The MFC has a unique supporter base, incredibly generous, no more evident than the success of our Foundation Heroes. This deserves great respect and acknowledgement and we must work to strengthen our relationship with our people.

5. Achieve customer growth, improved retention through segmentation initiatives. There are a number of major initiatives taking place across the industry to ensure the game caters for everyone. Again, we must seek to lead in this regard. 6. Grow sponsorship returns through an improved pipeline and value proposition. Sponsorship has been challenging for our club. We now have a strong base and this can be built upon. We have added sophistication to our sponsorship with more measurable return of investment offerings. It must run deeper than logos on jumpers and signs on fences. 7. Drive supporter engagement and commercial returns through implementing our Digital Strategy (developed in 2012). There has been a strong focus on digital, and the Club regularly rates top 4 in the AFL under all engagement measures across the AFL club network. This presents great opportunities at many levels. D. Building a winning team 8. Further entrench the Premiership Model as the framework which all aspects of team development and performance are aligned and measured. Our 2012 free agency, trade and draft period is an example of the ‘Premiership Model’ in action. It sets clear performance expectations and measurements to ensure the Club remains on track from a team performance perspective E. Landing key strategies 9. Development of Community Strategy We have made a significant community investment in recent years, and we are not seeking to take this to another level – particularly in the City of Casey. 10. Implement and further develop Fan Creation Strategy (developed in 2012). We have developed a fully integrated Fan Creation Strategy. This remains our most critical strategic challenge, and we are committed to investing in growth strategies to capitalise on team success. I trust this provides an insight into the key focus for the Club in 2013. Like all Melbourne supporters, I cannot wait for the season to start. See you at the footy.

MB: The Northern Territory camp was an important part of pre-season. How did you find that? MN: The Darwin trip was great. There were a number of reasons why we went. We put a lot of research into training in the heat and humidity, which was led by the sports science department in David Misson.

Mark Neeld speaks to Matt Burgan about his second season as coach of the Melbourne Football Club MB: Mark, it’s your second season as Melbourne coach. How are you feeling entering 2013? MN: It’s an exciting phase for the footy club. Having 14 new players at the club naturally brings enthusiasm, and a desire to learn and become good. That’s been noticeable right throughout the summer. Our recruiting staff has made a good effort to bring in certain types of personalities into our football club that we believe we needed. The 14 players are different in personalities, and there are quite a few bubbly characters among them. We’ve also been able to blend in some on-field leadership, which we thought we needed to add to our group. Guys like Shannon Byrnes, Chris Dawes and David Rodan have been very good in that area. Those three are an interesting case study, as they’ve all been involved in Grand Finals and in Byrnesy and Dawesy’s case: premierships. And Byrnesy and Dawesy have found themselves in leadership positions, because our list didn’t have that. They’ve found they’ve had to share their experiences, which is great for them and the other players at the club. I’m sure all three (Byrnes, Dawes and Rodan) didn’t realise how much they knew about the game. So they’ve been very giving of their time. The likes of Jack Viney, Jimmy Toumpas, Dom Barry and Jesse Hogan and a few other boys who have come in – they’ve just put their heads down and are willing to work hard. The volume of training this season has gone up, and so has the intensity.

It is a long-term investment – there is no such thing as a nine-day camp that’s going to unbelievably increase your endurance and means that you’re going to be a better athlete for the rest of your life. But it’s something that we want to continue to do. We also have a proud history and involvement with the Northern Territory through AFLNT and the NT government, and were able to do some community activities up there.

MB: The leadership group has expanded this year. Why is that? MN: We’ve had a couple of boys come to the club who are automatically in the best leaders of the group. They’re willing to share and give, so that’s important. Jordie McKenzie is also in the leadership group, and that’s great. He has the respect of his peers, and he’s someone who’s really giving with their time. We’re very strong in our belief that we need to encourage as many people as possible to be leaders – whether they have a title or not. We’re the third least experienced group in the comp and for us, we feel it’s the correct thing to do.

MB: Can you offer an insight into the new recruits? MN: Bringing in a range of players from 18 year-old Jesse Hogan to David Rodan created an influx of people with a wide range of ages and experiences. Pre-season has been enjoyable and challenging, and those 14 players can take a fair bit of ownership of that. They’ve had to start and run with it. We’ll have our challenges during the year, and one of them will be getting 14 new players into the team and that’s just with time – on and off the field and on and off the training track and playing games.

MB: Who should we watch out for in 2013? MN: Our expectations of the 14 players are that they’re going to be here for some time. They’ve all been brought in to help carry the footy club and into the new phase we’re going in.

It’s important that the people who had good individual seasons last year – such as Nathan Jones, Jack Grimes and Tom McDonald – back up and have good individual preseasons, which they’ve done.

MB: What are your expectations this year? MN: We want as many players as possible to put pressure on for senior selection. We’ll have quite a few players debuting in round one. So it’s about fast-tracking as many as we can to fit in with the way that we want to play. We’ve got to understand how each plays. We clearly want to improve from last season, and we’ll continue to evolve the way we play. It will be about demanding excellence and coaching the boys in a manner that will do that. But at the same time, it’s about being realistic that these guys are going to need some time and guidance and encouragement from their coaching staff and teammates to explore where they fit in the big, wide world of the AFL.

Melbourne co-captains Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove offer their thoughts on the upcoming season

Jack Grimes The season is just around the corner, which is great for all those who love the game and particularly the Melbourne Football Club. This pre-season, we got exactly what we wanted out of it. Post-Christmas, in particular, has been really good. We had a lot of guys out on the track and completing pre-season. Several new players have joined the club, and we’re really excited about that. The nature of football means that you’ll always lose a few players at the end of each season and gain new teammates. But we’re absolutely rapt with the older and younger guys who have joined – they’ve all made an immediate impact. Experienced players like Shannon Byrnes, David Rodan and Chris Dawes have given everyone a great insight into their knowledge since their arrival.

6

THE CAPTAINS

Then there is the other extreme. Someone such as Jimmy Toumpas, an early draft pick, is already having an influence on the group. His attitude and the way he trains is really positive. The team that runs out in round one will be pretty different to last year, but we’re really eager to see that. We believe the work we’ve done this pre-season will enable us to be in a lot more games this year. And we’re confident that we’ll have more consistency and a brighter 2013.

Jack Trengove This pre-season has been a strong launching pad for 2013. The boys have prepared well. And the little things have been evident. For example, the players returned from their off-season and post-Christmas breaks in really good physical condition. Players recorded PBs, pushed more weights and ran faster times over the pre-season, and the overall output was much better than previous years. Those results have given us a positive look into the season ahead. Now, it’s just a matter of knuckling down and making sure we transition this form into games. We’ve made sure the new guys at the club have been aware of what’s required, and what coach Mark Neeld expects.

On a personal note, my main aim is to play round one, after suffering a foot stress fracture pre-Christmas. I’m counting down the days until we play Port Adelaide at the MCG on Sunday, March 31, and I’ve given myself every opportunity to be right for the start of the season. I’m really excited about the year ahead, and hopefully it will be a good one for the Melbourne Football Club.

By Matt Burgan

The reappointment of Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove as co-captains, the elevation of Nathan Jones to vice captain, and an expanded squad are among the highlights of the 2013 leadership group. Premiership players and recruits Chris Dawes and Shannon Byrnes have already made an impression, having been named in a nine-man leadership group, which also includes hard working midfielder Jordie McKenzie for the first time. Key forward Mitch Clark and defenders James Frawley and Colin Garland have also been retained. The retired Clint Bartram and ruckman Mark Jamar are missing from the 2012 leadership group. As part of the selection process, players were rated in the 10 most important categories of leadership, which included character, competence and competitiveness. Coach Mark Neeld said Grimes and Trengove (who at 20 years, 217 days became the youngest captain in V/AFL history) had performed admirably in a difficult 2012. He also praised Jones, who took his game to another level last year, winning the Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy as Best and Fairest. “Both Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove experienced a challenging year in 2012, but in their first year as captains, we were very

happy with their development and have full confidence that this will continue in 2013,” Neeld said. “Nathan Jones has been recognised for his contributions both on and off the field last season, and he, along with the others’ leadership, will provide great support for our captains.”

TOP: Leadership Group members in 2012 and 2013; James Frawley, Mitch Clark and Colin Garland.

Neeld commended McKenzie, Byrnes and Dawes on making the leadership group. “Of the three new players to the group, Jordie McKenzie continues his great story, coming from the rookie list to where he is now. Jordie’s work ethic, competiveness and attention to detail have earned him this position,” he said.

“We are also pleased at the impact of Shannon Byrnes and Chris Dawes since their arrival. Their leadership and experience was one of the reasons we pursued them during the Free Agency and Trade periods.” Neeld also praised Bartram and Jamar for their input in 2012. “We would also like to acknowledge the work done by the retired Clint Bartram and Mark Jamar, who are not official members of the leadership group for 2013. While Mark was obviously disappointed, he handled it like a professional and will continue to lead and act as a mentor for our developing ruckmen,” he said.

SEASON PREVIEW

In many ways, it seems remarkable that 2013 is just Mark Neeld’s second season as senior coach of the Melbourne Football Club.

Further development from Jack Watts and Sam Blease, who both stepped up considerably last year, will be important, as will injury free seasons from experienced duo Colin Sylvia and Aaron Davey.

What these points reinforce is that Melbourne is still evolving. And although Neeld is a realist about where his list is at, he also knows that his charges are bullish about rising up the ladder.

Given several much publicised events during last year – on and off the field – it was a testing period for all involved with the club, especially for Neeld. In fact, it’s hard to remember a senior AFL coach who’s endured more in his inaugural season than Neeld.

Tall forward Mitch Clark, who had an outstanding first season with Melbourne in 2012 before his year was ended with a foot injury, will be critical up forward in a new attack with Dawes, while key backman James Frawley remains pivotal to Melbourne’s structure.

“The reality says that you need about 100 games when you play to crack it at the top end. For us, it’s about using the time to coach them really well and to almost guide them to train them to be elite. It’s not simply about standing still and waiting to mark time – it’s about training, preparing and playing in the AFL in a certain way that it demands,” Neeld said.

Despite several hurdles, the 2010 Collingwood premiership assistant coach didn’t stop in his quest to set the tone for the future – even if some pain was had in his first year. Although just four wins eventuated, Neeld implemented a new coaching group, leadership, game plan, fitness regime – headed up by elite performance manager Dave Misson – and eventually overhauled the list for 2013.

Unsung duo Jordie McKenzie and Colin Garland also remain integral parts of the team.

The reality says that you need about 100 games when you play to crack it at the top end. For us, it’s about using the time to coach them really well and to almost guide them to train them to be elite.

Neeld has identified the players he wants to take the club forward, and that was emphasised over the off season. A total of 15 players have gone from last year, with 13 joining the Demons for 2013 (the difference in two is due to list sizes being reduced from 46 to 44). But it must be noted that outstanding key forward prospect Jesse Hogan brings the number to 14 recruits, even though he won’t be officially listed or eligible to play until 2014. Still, the club targeted – and landed – some impressive names to fill voids.

Collingwood 2010 premiership player Chris Dawes was the biggest name to join over the off season. Young-gun midfielders Jack Viney and Jimmy Toumpas were drafted with decade-plus careers in mind. Mature age recruits Dean Terlich and Matt Jones could also be smokies this season. The additions of experienced duo Shannon Byrnes and David Rodan have already reaped benefits over the summer with their guidance and experience. Ex-Roo Cameron Pedersen and former Geelong defender Tom Gillies also loom as important additions. Add in the expected continual improvement of players such as reigning Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy winner Nathan Jones, co-captains Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove (despite an interrupted start to the season with a foot stress fracture), high flyer Jeremy Howe and defender Tom McDonald, and there is genuine optimism.

Mark Neeld The likes of Daniel Nicholson, Rohan Bail, Lynden Dunn, James Strauss and Neville Jetta could all have greater impacts in 2013. Overall, there is no doubt Neeld has overseen the foundations for the new era. The reality is that Melbourne still possesses a very young and inexperienced list and patience will be absolutely needed, when you consider these facts. Consider these two comparisons: • Melbourne will enter 2013 with the third least experienced list in the competition, in terms of total matches played (1962 matches), and average games played per player (45). Only the Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney are more inexperienced in those two areas. The Demons also have the seventh youngest list in the competition. • In 2013, the Sydney Swans, as reigning premiers, have the second most experienced list in the AFL. They sit second for total matches played and equal second for average games played per player. Only the West Coast Eagles (fifth on the ladder last year) have a more experienced list and sit equal with the Swans for average games played per player; and Collingwood (fourth) has the most matches on its list.

TOP: Bail, Pedersen, Jones and Tynan complete their pre-season time trials

“We will be hard on the group to make sure they are demanding of the group and each other, so they have elite standards, while we gain experience. That is our lot in life and we are fully aware of that. “But having said that, we will never put any ceiling on where we want to get to - we know we’re in an educational phase and it is what it is.” Although there is an unknown quantity about the Demons this year – given their revamped squad – patience will be needed. Anything additional to that will be a bonus. More wins and greater competitive performances will be demanded, but what can be assured is that the progressive steps that will be taken this year are part of a journey that points towards an exciting future. Neeld will ensure that no short cuts are taken along the way, for long term sustained success. www.melbournefc.com.au

With a substantial turnover in player personnel seeing thirteen newcomers arrive at the Club in 2013 – fourteen including Jesse Hogan, who will be placed on the senior list in 2014 – there is a new look to the Club. From Hogan, aged just 18, to Shannon Byrnes and Chris Dawes with premiership success already in their keeping at other clubs, this is your introduction to the newcomers as they get set to take over the MCG. By Lynda Carroll.

TOM GILLIES

SHANNON BYRNES

DAVID RODAN

Cameron Pedersen

CHRIS DAWES

Dean Terlich

Dean Kent

Matt Jones

Noted for being a ‘big bodied, tall defender’, Gillies comes to Melbourne after four years at Geelong. While versatile and capable in the Cats’ backline, Gillies was starved of chances to break into a winning line up, and should gain ample new opportunities at Melbourne.

The second of the former Cats to join the red and blue fold, Byrnes brings nine seasons and two premierships to his new club. A renowned small forward, Byrnes has impressed in the pre-season and has been installed as a member of the Club’s leadership group.

With a huge amount of experience and enthusiasm to his credit, Rodan comes to his third AFL club full of energy and knowledge to impart to his new teammates. Equipped with enviable agility and explosive skills, Rodan is ready and eager to ‘drive persistence’ in Season 2013.

Pedersen started out at the Kangaroos as a mature age rookie, winning the Kangaroos’ best first year player award in 2011 for his strength and versatility. He should be able to fill a defensive or ruck spot with Melbourne, and brings valuable experience to his new role.

A member of Collingwood’s 2010 premiership side, Dawes, hailed as a ‘physical presence’, looms as a valuable acquisition, capable of controlling the forward 50 in Season 2013. A dedicated trainer and renowned for his competitive attitude, Dawes is also a new member of the Club’s leadership group for this season.

Moving from forward to defence, Terlich caught the attention of many with his best on ground performance in Norwood’s 2012 SANFL premiership win. A rugged running defender, his rebounding skills will no doubt be put to good use in Season 2013 and beyond.

Competitive, tough and agile, Kent hails from Western Australia, and was the best Colts player from that state in 2011, winning the Jack Clarke Medal. Also blessed with a high possession count, he is a long kicking left footer.

Jones comes to Melbourne with a great deal of experience to his credit in his midfield role. Having played in two premierships with Croydon (Vic), the qualified electrician played for Labrador in Queensland before making his way to Box Hill. Always in action, Jones has good hands and a willing attitude that will serve him well at his new club.

MITCH CLISBY

Speedy and stylish, Barry is a product of St Pat’s Ballarat, having made his way there from Alice Springs, originally on a tennis scholarship. A great runner, Barry will be given time to mature and build his slight frame.

Hogan, who is just 18, will be placed on Melbourne’s senior list next year, allowing the big forward valuable time to develop. He has made his way to the Club courtesy of the deal with GWS that also saw Dominic Barry make his way into red and blue, while Hogan was picked up as a trade incentive selection.

A fierce competitor and strong tackler, Viney has the energy and attacking skills needed to fill a role in the midfield. Having spent time in 2012 gaining VFL experience with the Casey Scorpions, Viney has impressed with an exuberant and capable pre-season, setting himself up for an exciting Season 2013.

Classy and alert in the midfield, Toumpas has a brilliant kick, and a premiership to his credit with Woodville-West Torrens in 2011. His hard work should continue to reap dividends as he takes on the game with great enthusiasm and knowhow, set to become another valuable contributor to the Club’s engine room.

Originally from Mt Gambier, Stark impressed with his competitive attitude and work rate when playing reserves for Glenelg. His talents have won him a place on Melbourne’s rookie list heading into Season 2013.

After gaining experience and maturity over the past four seasons with North Adelaide, Clisby’s determination has seen him gain a spot on the Club’s rookie list as a speedy, lightly framed defender and wingman.

THE TWO OF US

Jesse on Mitch “He’s huge!” was the first thing I thought when I met Mitch. He looked pretty scary, covered in tats and is obviously a big lad but it didn’t take long for my opinion to turn from scary to great bloke.

always made me feel comfortable, and is always there to listen to me. It’s funny looking back now thinking how scary I thought Mitch would be (and is if you’re playing on him!). If I had to sum him up I’d say intelligent, generous and professional. He’s not the sort of guy who needs to dish out advice all the time because he just leads by example in all aspects of his life.

When people from back home ask me what he’s like, there are so many things I could say, but I reckon genuine is the best way to sum him up. As soon as I arrived in Melbourne I’m really optimistic and excited about the year ahead. The and got to the Club, Mitch took me under his wing, best bit will be learning to play introduced me to everyone and The main thing I keep reiterating against bigger bodies and elite helped me feel not so lost. He athletes. I’m keen to get my body answered every question I asked to Jesse is to work hard and right and learn the team structures him and was always patient. stay patient. He obviously has through playing with the Casey The amount of stuff Mitch did Scorpions. talent, but if he backs it up with for me to help me settle in was I’ve got out of Mitch and Sam’s hair amazing. He even went out and work rate, who knows what and moved in with Todd and Meg got me a TV for my room so it felt Viney, which is where I’ll live for potential he could reach. more like my own space. It was just ridiculous how good he was Mitch Clark this year. Like Mitch’s house, it’s an awesome place to live. Meg is to me. Nothing was ever too much amazingly organised, and makes trouble for him. His partner, Sam, sure there is always enough food! was awesome as well. When the Jimmy Toumpas is living there as well so Jack, him and I are new COD came out, she bought it for me on that same day. always getting up to something. As Mitch would tell you, our friendly nightly game of Xbox It’s still a bit surreal to think I’m 18 and living the dream of would quickly turn into a very competitive session. I had being at an AFL club, but it’s awesome. him covered on COD but I’ll give him FIFA, just. I never want to lose! Mitch on Jesse Unfortunately cooking isn’t my strength so I didn’t help out much in the kitchen, but if I had to pick a speciality, it would be two minute noodles. Does that count?

When Jesse first arrived at the Club, my first impression was, ‘Gee he’s a big boy’. As I’ve got to know him better my impression has stayed the same!

I still can’t believe how quickly the boys made me feel welcomed. They all got around me and it didn’t take long before I stopped feeling ‘new’. I knew from the way that every single player and coach made the effort to welcome me that this club has an amazing culture.

As Jesse and I are both forwards who grew up in Perth, it seemed like a natural fit for me to take on a mentoring role with him. For the first four weeks, Jesse lived with me and my partner Sam. With both of us being from Perth, it was nice to have that common bond and discuss things about back home, and how hard it can be being away from family and friends.

Until now, the other mentor type relationship I’ve had has been with my 28 year-old brother, Jake. Like Mitch, he has

As Jesse is such a big boy, it’s easy to forget that he is just a 18 year-old guy who has left behind all his family and friends to pursue his AFL dream. It’s a huge change from the life he was living before, and I was really conscious of that, so I wanted to make sure I did everything possible to help him feel at home in Melbourne. I really wanted him to feel like our home was his, so I made some changes like putting a TV in his room. Little things like that can help it feel like home. An average night in our household would basically involve Jesse and I inhaling dinner and then jumping on the Play Station. Jesse loves his games! If he’s not on the Play Station he is on the computer playing Call of Duty (COD). The nights on the Play Station quickly turned from fun to a fierce competition. I had him on FIFA but he got me on COD. I guess if I had to describe Jesse I would say driven, messy and competitive. His competitiveness is something I really admire about him, as well as his courage to be independent and leave his family to chase his dreams. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be able to play a mentoring role to Jesse. Although he’s living with the Viney family now, I loved having him at my place. It’s great to be able to share what I’ve learnt with players like Jesse. I think it’s important to invest in these younger guys, as they are the ones who are going to drive our Club forward for years to come. The main thing I keep reiterating to Jesse is to work hard and stay patient. He obviously has talent, but if he backs it up with work rate, who knows what potential he could reach. I’ve also talked to him about the importance of staying patient this year while not being able to play AFL. I’ve never really had an official mentor myself, but I’d say that my Dad has taught me the most in life, and I always trust his opinion. If I’m ever in doubt, he is the first person I go to. He’s helped me to remain patient while I’ve been in rehab. My recovery from my foot injury has been going really well. I’m pumped for the year ahead, and can’t wait to play footy again with the boys. It’s definitely been a hard pre-season, and I think the rewards will come.

By Peter Ryan

It’s an indication of Chris Dawes’s character that he sought out some opinions of teammates before nominating to be part of his new club’s leadership group.

“[I] spoke to those people and realised there was an opportunity for me to improve this group and have a positive influence on them,” Dawes said.

While he may be a big-bodied recruit with a big grin and a big appetite for hard work, he is no big head.

Being positive is what Dawes – who became part of the leadership group in mid-January – is about in 2013.

First he asked the group’s young leaders whether they considered it appropriate for him to put himself forward.

After all, 2012 was harder than a chopping board. A season that, in some ways, he was happy to see pass.

Then he had a quick chat to Mitch Clark, who had joined the leadership group in 2012, his first season with the Demons. Clark’s opinion was clear. He told Dawes that he thought any player coming into a young and inexperienced group who could pass on what was required for success had a responsibility to nominate. That was enough to convince Dawes, 24, a premiership player with Collingwood who has kicked 83 goals in 71 games, to throw his hat in the ring. So when the nominees to the leadership group were flashed on the screen during the last day of the training camp in Darwin, Dawes’s name appeared. 16

READY TO LEAD

“It was a tough year,” admits Dawes. “Not just football wise but away from the footy it was one of those years that you occasionally have. It became more of a grind. For a lot of it, it wasn’t that enjoyable. You learn your lessons along the way but I don’t want to spend too much time dwelling on it.” He was shocked at the end of the season when Collingwood informed his manager, Ben Niall, that although he still had a year left on his contract they would be happy for Dawes to explore his options. Dawes knew clubs don’t make such calls to managers of players they really want to keep. But he wanted to hear what the Magpies were thinking for himself.

He sought further clarification from Nathan Buckley and spoke to some of his more senior teammates. Buckley confirmed Dawes should explore other avenues while his teammates said there would be no hard feelings if he left. So he decided to seek a new home. “I had to have a few rushed meetings with other clubs because I was flying out a day or so later,” Dawes said. After he caught up with Demons coach Mark Neeld and assistant coach Leigh Brown – both former colleagues of his at the Magpies – he was sure of two things: The Demons wanted him and they had a good plan in place. Dawes then left for America, maintaining contact only with Niall to ensure his decision was well informed and free of the media clatter that inevitably surrounds such choices. No promises were made about where he would or would not play but from Dawes perspective it was pretty obvious what the club had in mind for him. “It’s not as if any club would have been interested in me as a ruckman,” Dawes said. “Any club [that was interested in me] would have wanted a key forward,

so that is where I was heading towards. It’s not as though I wanted to go to Melbourne because they said I wouldn’t have to play in the ruck and Collingwood vice versa, or something like that.”

I feel good about jumping in now, when it feels like we are on the way up... I have now got a responsibility to be part of dragging that team up to where it should be.

In reality Dawes’ decision was more based on coaching, location (he did not want to leave Victoria) and, importantly, the list’s prospects. “As an outsider my perception of Melbourne – without having ever thought about it a great deal – was that they were a side that has got a lot of great talent, and some holes in their list. They had tried hard but in some games they were not that competitive,” Dawes said. That modest appraisal became more generous as soon as he joined the group and began working alongside them. “What struck me – and apparently it has been a huge shift in the last 12 months – was just the intensity of training, the energy of the group and the energy with which they attacked training. They are working as hard as I’ve seen a team work, albeit in my limited experience,” Dawes said. Dawes has noticed a positive mindset among the group when it turns up for training each day. Rather than just wanting to

Chris Dawes get through a session, Dawes says the players are looking for opportunities to compete, to beat their personal bests, to push the limits. “It’s such a good environment to be a part of because it breeds success really,” Dawes said. He has quickly formed a friendship with Clark, his fellow key forward and admits that it can’t hurt to be friends with the person who is most likely to be your partner-in-crime inside the forward 50. Dawes says he hopes the duo can have a real presence in the forwardline together. It is a hope everyone with an interest in Melbourne shares, but Dawes is ready to meet the challenge of expectation that hovers over any recruit.

“If you want to be successful, you place an expectation on yourself. [You are] expecting to come out and play well. The worst case scenario is that I play my role and best case should be that I not only play my role but I have some really dominant games,” Dawes said. “That is what I am planning for and the main thing is that I get in there and start contributing to us winning some games because we have been down for too long.” Many perceive Dawes as a risk. They know what he is capable of but worry about how he performed in 2012. No-one is quite sure as to the extent of his talent. What they can be certain of is that Dawes is a fighter, a character with the resilience to keep going who enjoys the challenges football throws his way. “It is just continual tests. I’ve played sore before. I’ve been in bad form and then had good games as well so it is just continual learning…I will have learned a lot from last year possibly without even realising some of the things I have learned,” Dawes said. Hearing about those lessons is for a day down the track. Right now, Dawes is rapt to be at Melbourne and telling anyone who listens that he feels a lucky to have joined the club now. “I feel good about jumping in now, when it feels like we are on the way up,” Dawes said. “I have now got a responsibility to be part of dragging that team up to where it should be.” www.melbournefc.com.au

Vale Arthur Wilkinson In January this year, the Melbourne Football Club farewelled a special person, with the passing of long time doorman, Arthur Wilkinson, following a brave battle with cancer. Arthur’s time in the role of doorman spanned the coaching generations from Norm Smith, right through to the current day, and enhanced by his friendship with the legendary Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes. Made a Life Member of the Club in 1992, Arthur was further recognised in 2010 for his special service in a voluntary role, and in 2011 by the AFL Coaches Association with a Support Staff Leadership award. His love of the Club saw Arthur – along with his entire family, son Mark now also serving in the doorman’s role – become a constant presence for over half a century, literally standing at the door of Melbourne, absorbing and treasuring the people, the stories and the life of the Club. Born before the Great Depression, a reader of poetry and described by Martin Flanagan as ‘an old bushie’, Arthur was a legend in his own right. As CEO Cameron Schwab said, ‘Arthur was a huge part of the Club for so many people for such a long time, and a wonderfully rich character in his own right. People like Arthur help to make up the story of this Club, and he’ll be very much missed.’ Everyone at the Melbourne Football Club shares these sentiments, and we offer our most sincere condolences to Arthur’s wife, Norma, children Diane, David and Mark, family and friends. He will indeed be greatly missed. 44

five favourite things Music

Peterborough

I love how music can change your mood or bring back great memories. The Killers would have to be my favourite band. I’ve been lucky enough to see them play live twice and am keen to see them again soon. My favourite of their songs is ‘All these things that I’ve done’.

Growing up, we spent all our summers down in Peterborough, which is a small coastal town on the Great Ocean Road. Every day we’d body board, fish and swim.

Backyard cricket

When it wasn’t footy season, my brother Tom, Dad and I would spend hours playing backyard cricket. It would often get quite heated! Because of the lack of fielders, we would recruit a couple of 44 gallon drums and the trampoline to be catching options around the bat.

Grandma’s roast

I don’t know what Grandma does, but she makes the best roast going around. Even after all these years, nothing can beat it.

Living in the sporting capital

Sport has always been a passion of mine so now, living in Melbourne, I make sure that I don’t take for granted how lucky I am to be able to watch my other teams play – Melbourne Victory, Melbourne Storm and the Bushrangers.

Fruit and vegetable juicer

Most mornings, my housemate Howie and I whip up a juice. They’re full of goodness and we find they help us get through a big day of training. My usual concoction is beetroot, broccoli, spinach, cucumber, apple and ginger.

from Jordie McKenzie and Shannon Byrnes

Will Ferrell

I love anything that can make me laugh, and no one does it better then Will Ferrell. I love all of his stuff, but ‘Old School’ would have to be my favourite movie. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve watched it.

Travelling

I’m a keen traveller and always love being able to get away to the States. You can’t top Vegas as a destination, especially during Halloween! Last time I was there for Halloween, I went as a Ghost Buster.

‘Liar Liar’ cafe in Glenferrie Road

This is my new favourite cafe in Melbourne. They’ve got great coffee, but the real highlight is their rum balls! It’s a great place to catch up with mates.

NFL- Dallas Cowboys

I love all sports, and the Cowboys are one of the many teams I support. I’m in a fantasy league where I backed myself in to have the best team but unfortunately was just beaten last year. My favourite player is Dez Bryant, and I’ve got his guernsey with 88 on it.

Jordie’s cap and Shannon’s t-shirt are available from the Demon Shop www.melbournefc.com.au
