A Message From the Chair In a decade Melbourne Recital Centre has become an essential part of Australia’s artistic life, a vibrant place for music at the heart of Melbourne’s Arts Precinct, a beacon for musicians and music-lovers from around the world. Our activities now extend beyond the Centre, in communities throughout Victoria and online. In addition to Australia’s most diverse and in-depth musical program, the Centre offers educational opportunities, master classes, talks and workshops. The support of our growing network of donors, bequestors and sponsors enables these activities, and ensures that Melbourne Recital Centre can nurture a thriving artistic ecosystem. It was the vision of the State Government of Victoria and a gift from Dame Elisabeth Murdoch’s family that initiated Melbourne Recital Centre to the ongoing benefit of Melbourne’s music-lovers and musicians.

A Message From the CEO Wominjeka, Welcome to Melbourne Recital Centre’s 10th Anniversary Season. In this milestone year, you’ll discover our most thrilling and diverse program yet, as bold musicmakers create unforgettable live experiences. I’m very excited to be sharing this celebration of 10 years of great music with you. Since the Centre’s opening in February 2009 it has been more than just a concert venue, it has been a home for musicians from Victoria, Australia and around the globe. The Centre was inspired by the passion and commitment of Melbourne’s music community of artists, audiences and supporters. Now, we’re illuminated around 600 times each year as great ensembles, solo artists and bands perform in two sublime spaces. We’re inspired by the incredible skill and imagination of artists who’ve been with us from the beginning and have become our friends, and those we will meet in 2019.

Recent gifts from the the Late Betty Amsden DSJ AO and Lady Primrose Potter AC enable us to present transforming performances for decades to come. On behalf of everyone connected with the Centre, I offer our sincere thanks. Each concert is part of the ongoing story of Melbourne Recital Centre. I hope that you will join us in 2019 to add your chapter, and that what you see and hear will resonate with you for the next decade and beyond. Thank you for your support.

Kathryn Fagg Chair, Melbourne Recital Centre

We’re celebrating the relationships between music-lovers, musicmakers and the Centre, marking 10 years of standing ovations, and have some special birthday treats in store for you. In February, we mark the day the Centre opened, 8 February, with a moving and uplifting concert bringing three generations of musicians on stage, from ages 10 to 96. We’re delighted that internationally-acclaimed period instrument ensemble the Gabrieli Consort and Players makes its Australian debut in February performing Henry Purcell’s King Arthur. You’ll also enjoy a superb roster of Great Performers, your favourite Victorian and Australian ensembles complemented by international stars, a thrilling line-up of pop, rock, indie and world acts including Rufus Wainwright, Neneh Cherry, Meshell Ndegeocello and many others. There are talks and master classes, intimate chamber and jazz concerts, orchestras and operas. If you’ve never come to the Centre before, we invite you to experience these concerts for as little as $10, thanks to the generosity of our donors – see page 6 for details. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve been with us since 2009, our 10th Anniversary is the perfect time to experience live music in the Best Place to Hear. Please join us for our year-long celebrations!

About Melbourne Recital Centre Melbourne Recital Centre is a venue of and for the 21st century: celebrating the past, welcoming the present and imagining the future, a place where artists and audiences are invited to engage, challenge and explore.

Melbourne Recital Centre celebrates its 10th Anniversary in 2019, a decade at the heart of Australia’s vibrant musical life. The Centre is testament to the passion, vision and generosity of Melbourne’s music community. A 2007 gift from the Kantor and CalvertJones families enabled the establishment of the Centre’s self-presented artistic program and Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is named in acknowledgement of this gift. In 2018, Lady Primrose Potter AC continues this transformative legacy, allowing the Centre to flourish in the next decade and beyond. Primrose Potter Salon is named in her honour.

With a unique focus on music, the Centre presents and hosts hundreds of concerts each year, representing the pinnacle of the art form as practised by Australian and international performers in a dazzlingly diverse array of styles, from early music to post-rock. The Centre’s learning and access activities beyond the Centre provide opportunities for Victorians of all ages and backgrounds to experience outstanding performances. The Centre is home to a vibrant community of Victorian and national chamber music ensembles and as a venue for acclaimed Australian ensembles and festivals. Music is central to all our lives. Visit us at Melbourne Recital Centre and experience one of the finest live music venues in the world, a place we can be proud to call our own — a Victorian venue with a global outlook for the music and musicians of today and tomorrow.

DEBUT AUSTRALIAN TOUR

The Gabrieli Consort & Players are world-renowned interpreters of great vocal and instrumental repertoire from the Renaissance to the present day. Over 35 years, the ensemble's repertoire has expanded beyond the Baroque canon to include opera, virtuosic a cappella programs, and astonishing reconstructions of historic musical events in performances and recordings that surprise, challenge and inspire.

PAUL M CCREESH

This program of Purcell's glorious semi-opera King Arthur is a new performing edition by Gabrieli’s Christopher Suckling and Artistic Director Paul McCreesh. King Arthur’s Britons battle the Saxons, supernatural characters step in, and enchanting music ripples with wit, tenderness and colour. Led by Paul McCreesh, the Gabrieli Consort & Players respectfully illuminates Purcell’s genius with its acclaimed vitality. Its Melbourne Recital Centre performance sustains this great piece of art in the 21st century.

Paul Dyer CO-FOUNDER AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA

Over 10 years there have been many fabulous and creative people at the Centre who’ve shaped our performances for Melbourne audiences. The spectacular Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is ideal for the period instruments of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and the pure voices of the Brandenburg Choir. When we performed at the Centre’s opening concert 10 years ago with soprano Cyndia Sieden, she sang the Mozart aria ‘Vorrei spiegarvi, oh Dio!’ which requires the soprano and oboe to play extremely high and extremely quietly. 8

Cyndia had performed this aria in some of the major concert halls of the world, from Carnegie Hall in New York to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and I remember she remarked how perfect and special it was for her to sing it on the Melbourne Recital Centre stage. I always like to greet people at the start of the concert to make them feel comfortable and share my thoughts on what they’re about to hear. It enables me to connect in a very genuine way with the community of Melbourne – I really love it.

MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE – 2019 2018 CONCERT GUIDE

I think it is interesting and beautiful synchronicity that we both celebrate milestones in 2019 – the Brandenburg’s 30th birthday and the Centre’s 10th. The first series for our 30th Anniversary year in March 2019 will celebrate J.S. Bach, after whose Brandenburg Concertos I named the orchestra, and I’m super excited to launch the year performing the concertos in this stunning hall.

‘The Melbourne Recital Centre is without a doubt one of my favourite concert halls anywhere in the world. Every time I walk onto the stage, I am in awe of the magic of the room. It is one of those rare acoustic gems that allows its musicians to create the most exquisite range of colours – even the slightest whisper of a sound from my violin will be heard throughout the hall. It never ceases to occur to me that while this hall is a crowning jewel in the cultural landscape of Australia, it also feels like a home to so many in the music community of Melbourne.’

Vänskä’s panache, versatility and insight is on display in the intricacies of Bach, Beethoven’s heroic A-major sonata, Ravel’s jazzily seductive sonata, the haunting soundscapes of Saariaho and the dynamism of Lutosławski. It is always a pleasure to attend the Centre - the warmth and professionalism of all staff across the venue is wonderful. To hear the beauty of the human voice and musical instruments in concert in such a superb venue keeps me coming back. I love the intimacy of sound in the Primrose Potter Salon and the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE – 2019 CONCERT GUIDE

One of many highlights has been The Sixteen conducted by Harry Christopher – the exquisite vocal beauty and control of the singers was remarkable. In 2019 I am anticipating a wonderful program of artists and even thinking of some ‘left of field’ choices. I have been introduced to such a variety of artists and music and feel we are very privileged to have Melbourne Recital Centre here in Melbourne. It has truly created a gift of music to our city.

CHAMBER MUSIC

‘It was all immaculately performed by the group's members, their diction crystal-clear, their intonation faultless.’ The Guardian (U.K.)

The Sixteen (U.K.) The Sixteen is a musical treasure. The richness, beauty and expressivity of the virtuoso choir has earned it a global following in the four decades since it was founded by conductor Harry Christophers. Whether performing Renaissance masterpieces or works composed especially for the ensemble, its members sing with power, precision and passion.

The Sixteen explores the immortal legacy of Tudor composers Thomas Tallis and William Byrd – Catholic at a time when Catholics were persecuted. That they composed some of the most exquisite sacred music of the 16th century, often performed in secret, is testament to the power of their creativity and faith. The a cappella tradition forged by Tallis and his contemporaries lives in the vivid and moving music of Britten, Tippett and James MacMillan.

TUESDAY 12 MARCH 7PM

An Immortal Legacy The Sixteen (U.K.) Harry Christophers conductor Sacred and secular music from England by Tallis, Morley, Gibbons, James MacMillan, Sheppard, Tippett and Britten. ELISABETH MURDOCH HALL TICKETS FROM $62

The warmth and clarity of The Sixteen’s voices are a sublime match for Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

CHAMBER MUSIC

Viktoria Mullova is one of her generation’s greatest violin virtuosos and one of the most versatile, with musical horizons that stretch from Baroque to jazz and world music. Whatever she plays, she plays with integrity and passion. Hear Mullova in the intimacy of a piano trio with her husband Matthew Barley and long-time collaborator Stephen de Pledge. Chamber music is an opportunity for musicians to engage and challenge each other, to dive deeper into music. It’s rewarding for audiences too. TUESDAY 3 SEPTEMBER 7.30PM

Mullova, Barley & de Pledge (U.K./N.Z.) Quatuor Ebène has been called ‘a string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band’. While you won’t hear any jazz in the Quartet’s all-Beethoven evening, the same sense of improvisation and spontaneity animates this band of four’s music-making. The musicians met at university and what began as a practice room distraction quickly became a full-time quartet with a reputation for breathing new life into the classics. Quatuor Ebène’s direct and authentic approach is ideal for the string quartets of Beethoven, where passion and drama, humour and tragedy jostle together. From 2019 to 2020, Quatuor Ebène tours five continents performing and recording all of Beethoven’s string quartets in the world’s finest concert halls, including Melbourne Recital Centre’s Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. Flinders Quartet MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE PERFORMERS SINCE 2009

The Centre is our music community. It is a place where one can guarantee great concerts every night no matter who is performing. We all love music and have an insatiable desire for exquisite sound and Melbourne Recital Centre unites us in that passion. The facilities, staff and resources are extraordinary. With its unique acoustic and space, the Centre always represents the highpoint of our tours. Passing through Stage Door, across the loading dock and into the Primrose Potter Salon,

it has the familiarity of our lounge room, but with an extra buzz. As musicians, our lives revolve around making the most beautiful and interesting sounds possible. Elisabeth Murdoch Hall and Primrose Potter Salon are supremely quiet, which means we can seek out nuances rather than having to fight with the acoustic for every note. Both spaces have come to feel just like another instrument playing along with us.

Lunar New Year Concert Memories from Childhood Celebrate the 2019 Lunar New Year with one of Australia’s leading chamber ensembles, Southern Cross Soloists, and an impressive line-up of guest soloists as they bid adieu (zàijiàn) to the Chinese Year of the Dog and usher in the Year of the Pig – a year which promises to be full of good fortune and luck. Brilliant colour and sheer exuberance feature in this jubilant concert of East meets West, with a vibrant mix of modern and age-old traditional folk songs as we mark the final day of the Lunar New Year. Southern Cross Soloists share the stage with special guests: cello virtuoso Li-Wei Qin; Melbourne favourite, piano soloist Kristian Chong; and international erhu superstar George Gao, one of the most exciting, innovative and respected erhu masters of our time. From Chinese folk song and virtuosic artistry to Saint-Saëns's grand zoological fantasy and Stravinsky’s elusive Firebird Suite, a highlight of the concert will be the world premiere of a new work by Australia’s own Lyle Chan, inspired by the ancient folk story of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

Prepare for an evening of huge laughs with Rossini’s most popular opera, which offers a delightful romp full of farcical frivolity. Featuring some of opera’s most recognisable music, this madcap masterpiece is a paean to impertinence that will make you beam with joy and grin with delight. Count Almaviva is hopelessly in love with the beautiful, young Rosina but first he must prise her from the clutches of her guardian, the lecherous Doctor Bartolo. Lucky for them, the flamboyant and cunning town barber Figaro has a few tricks up his sleeve. One of Italy’s most renowned Rosinas, Chiara Amarù joins a stellar Australian cast in an essential interpretation of this exuberant opera buffa, in the tradition of commedia dell’arte. The choir’s 2016 performance of this work received a five-minute ovation and a four-star review from The Age. Andrew Goodwin brings his beautiful high tenor to the role of the Evangelist with Jud Arthur singing Christus together with aria soloists including Jacqueline Porter, Jacqueline Dark, Michael Smallwood and Jeremy Kleeman. Patrick Jaffe AUDIENCE MEMBER SINCE 2018 This is a beautiful space to hear music. I have a student membership and really try to make the most of it. I love the mix of things that are on. It has opened my eyes to a lot of different music. I’m looking forward to seeing Ólafur Arnalds and loved hearing Ray Chen perform earlier this year – it was a brilliant program and the acoustics of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall added to the whole experience. I often attend concerts with friends and it’s the quality of sound that keeps me coming back. I’ve started doing composing myself and the Centre has exposed me to a lot of different styles. It’s very inspiring.

MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE – 2019 CONCERT GUIDE

PIANO

Piano Series 2019 The pianoforte, more commonly called the piano, became, by the last quarter of the 18th century, a leading instrument of Western art music. A highly versatile instrument, it can sustain pitches in a lyrical fashion, creating all musical styles and moods, with enough volume to be heard through almost any musical ensemble. Almost every major Western composer from Mozart onward has played it, many as virtuosi, and the piano repertory – whether solo, chamber, or with orchestra – is at the heart of Western classical professional performance. The 2019 Piano Series features six leading exponents of the piano performing great masterpieces of the piano repertoire across the year.

The Centre is one of my favourite places in Melbourne. One of the things I enjoy most are the young musicians. This is an important organisation for developing and supporting young artists, which is why I chose to donate to the Nurturing Young Artists Program. I hope others are inspired to become supporters. I wish for the Centre to continue to present a world-class standard of music and to influence, shape and lift the arts culture in Victoria.

FOUNDING BENEFACTORS

This Hall is a godsend. I remember seeing it with my mother, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, for the first time. She was very happy and excited. Music survives where other things don’t and we want the Centre to continue to thrive. What it gives to our concert experiences is most special.

We don’t go out as often as we used to, but we never miss a concert at Melbourne Recital Centre. To be a witness to this unbelievably intimate expression of music is pure enjoyment. PHOTO: GARETH ORIANDER

Arlo Guthrie: Alice's Restaurant Tour In 1965, a teenage Arlo Guthrie was deemed ‘not moral enough to join the army’ and recounted these events on the album Alice’s Restaurant in 1967. The ‘Alice’s Restaurant Massacree’, a partially sung comic monologue has become a quintessential anti-establishment anthem. Folk songs only become classics when story-lines remain just as relevant today as when they were originally composed. Alice’s Restaurant is of this ilk. Now experience an intimate performance of ‘80s and ‘90s radio hits off her new cover album Ventriloquism. As always she pays tribute to her diverse influences, which we hear layered over one another in these 11 covers. The reimagining affords not just a new musical experience but also a comment on the narrow expectations of sounds and structures for black artists and black music.

Early on in my career, I was told to make the same kind of album again and again, and when I didn’t do that, I lost support. There isn’t much diversity within genres, which are ghettoizing themselves, and I liked the idea of turning hits I loved into something even just a little less familiar or formulaic. It was an opportunity to pay a new kind of tribute.’ Meshell Ndegeocello
