Uwe Hagen Managing Director, Audi Australia

Now in our third year of partnership with Melbourne Recital Centre, Audi is proud of the role its Principal Partnership has played in assisting to establish this new Australian cultural icon and world-renowned music venue. Our partnership is based on a shared commitment to progressive performance brought to life with a vigour, quality and passion that enables the kind of masterful performance we will all enjoy in the upcoming autumn season. We look forward to continued shared success, strengthening the partnership between our two great brands in Australia. I commend the impending concerts to all music aficionados – enjoy! Principal Partner

The Best Place to Hear Autumn is the perfect time to come inside and discover Melbourne Recital Centre’s exquisite blend of architecture and art. Concerts in the dramatic Elisabeth Murdoch Hall and the intimate Salon resonate in the finest acoustic in Australia for chamber (small ensemble) music. Classical music is just one of our passions. In April and May, we present Angélique Kidjo (5 April), an acclaimed world music pop star and activist – her concerts are dynamic, uplifting experiences that will have you on your feet. We welcome mezzo-soprano, Susan Graham, for a recital that ranges from Baroque to Broadway in our Great Performers series (26 April). She’s America’s favourite mezzo and she’s sure to win Melbourne’s heart, too. The Metropolis New Music Festival (27 April – 5 May) is a bold new partnership between the MSO and Melbourne Recital Centre. Led by the hottest contemporary music band in the business, eighth blackbird (two-time Grammy-winners), the Festival surveys the state of the art of American music. We’re thrilled that one of the greatest living composers Steve Reich will be present for a talk and concert of his music. In terms of impact, Reich is a musical radical every bit as revolutionary as Beethoven. He’ll be here in spirit at least when pianist Olli Mustonen and the MSO play the king of concertos – Beethoven’s Emperor (19 & 21 April). Melbourne Recital Centre is the best place to hear every thrilling note. Join us.

Music for big-spirited kids and their grownups.

Tubby the Tuba The wonderful story of Tubby the Tuba has been entertaining children and adults alike since 1941. Tubby Tuba is tired of just playing ‘oompah, oompah’ and wants to perform a melody like the violins or the flute. That night, while sitting by the river, the unhappy tuba meets a bullfrog, who sings a beautiful tune. The next day, inspired by his new friend, Tubby enthusiastically plays the melody for the orchestra, winning the praise of the conductor and the other instruments. This favourite is paired with another classic, The Musicians of Bremen by the Brothers Grimm, where a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster head off to live a life free of masters and become musicians.

Yann Tiersen

‘ It was one of those rare moments at a live gig when you realise you’ve been in the presence of greatness.’ Multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and street musician, Yann Tiersen brings the dreamy, romantic and gorgeously-detailed sound of his latest album, Skyline, to Melbourne for one concert only. Quietly famous in his native France until 2001, Tiersen shot to international fame with the release of the film Amelie, which he provided with a delicate, whimsical and instantly appealing musical score. Since then he has collaborated with Jane Birkin, one of the Cocteau Twins and continued to create his elegant and eclectic albums. Tiersen’s life-affirming and hook-laden music transcends genre – it’s not pop, it’s not indie and it’s not classical because, as Tiersen says: ‘It is not my job to define my music. To keep the enthusiasm for creating, an artist should not care about genres.’ A Yann Tiersen live concert is an emotive and spontaneous experience. Don’t miss one of France’s quirkiest and most uplifting musical sensibilities. INFORMATION

Travel to Rome where Frescobaldi so entranced his patrons and peers with his magnificent playing in St Peter’s Basilica. Hear some of the first sonatas ever written. This was music of the avant-garde, exciting, edgy, flamboyant and full of joy and sprezzatura.

Angélique Kidjo ‘ Joyously powerful soul vocals’

INFORMATION

Tue 10 April 6pm Salon (no interval) Ludovico’s Band Tickets $35 ($25 concession) Four concert subscription package $112 ($80) Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre & Ludovico’s Band

An extraordinary singer and storyteller, Angélique Kidjo is one of the greatest forces in African music. Kidjo brings her powerful voice and ‘dynamic and unstoppable’ (NY Times) music to Melbourne Recital Centre’s Elisabeth Murdoch Hall for one concert only. Exiled from her homeland, the West African state of Benin for her role as an outspoken humanitarian activist, Kidjo has used her music to bring global attention to the plight of women and children in Africa. According to The Guardian (UK), Kidjo is one of the

100 most inspiring women in the world. The Grammy-award winning artist is a global pop star and has collaborated with artists as diverse as Alicia Keys, John Legend and Dianne Reeves and drawn inspiration from Miriam Makeba, James Brown, Otis Redding and the music of Benin.

Sharing the bill is musician-activist Vusi Mahlasela whose songs of hope connect apartheid-scarred South Africa with its promise for a better future. Known simply as ‘The Voice’ in his homeland, Mahlasela is celebrated for his distinctive, powerful voice and his poetic, optimistic lyrics.

Kidjo’s concerts are joyous and exuberant. With a richly powerful voice, commanding stage presence and a dramatic past, Kidjo is an icon: ‘Africa’s premier diva’. Her Melbourne concert is essential for anyone interested in the way music can shape and be shaped by history.

‘ Immortal classic meets music of today inspired by great masters.’

Duo Chamber Melange

Michelle Wood, Adam Chalabi, Lerida Delbridge & Justin Williams

A Feast of Languages Tinalley String Quartet Australia’s internationally celebrated Tinalley String Quartet returns with a dynamic season celebrating the tremendous breadth of repertoire the string quartet genre offers. This program opens with selected movements of J.S. Bach’s The Art of Fugue. Witness the Quartet provoking, murmuring and reflecting... yet not a word is spoken! Shostakovich’s concise 7th Quartet is an epitaph of loneliness, scaling the emotional heights of rage, fear, isolation and tender reminiscence. In a program celebrating language, discourse and humanity, the Quartet closes with Beethoven’s Op.59, No.2; symphonic in scale, the work showcases Tinalley’s tonal riches and exuberant playing style.

The Fallen Woman ‘ Tsiavos illustrates the instrument’s brooding strength and breadth of communicative impact, as well as exploring its unexpectedly wide range and remarkable powers of resonance.’

With celebrated soprano Deborah Kayser and versatile Melbourne favourite Nick Tsiavos, the female voice and the contrabass combine to create a rich aesthetic experience. In this performance, the duo embarks on an exploration of rapture and its residue; creating an intimate sound-world that is as beautiful in its limpid stillness as it is intense in its violent energies.

Mendelssohn makes a welcome return with one of the most loved trios ever written. For a composer of his genius, words are simply not required. Australia’s Nigel Westlake is renowned worldwide for his music for film and concert hall. Urban Myths showcases his uncanny gift for melody. Likewise, Haydn’s E flat Trio is full of euphonious inspiration and innovation. Nothing less could be expected from the piano trio’s inventor! In this Sidney Myer Free Concert, conductor Max McBride directs the University of Melbourne Orchestra in an all-Beethoven program featuring international soloists Li Wei Qin, Natsuko Yoshimoto and Kristian Chong.

Olli Mustonen

Emperor Concerto ‘ Mustonen brings great energy to his performances, particularly the more rumbustious opening movement of the lengthy Fifth, whose colossal aspect clearly offers no obstacles to his abilities.’

The culmination of a special three-year collaboration between the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Finnish pianist, composer and conductor, Olli Mustonen, this concert is a showcase of Mustonen’s prodigious musical intelligence and talent. Beethoven’s last piano concerto, his fifth, is aptly nicknamed Emperor, a fitting adjective that aptly evokes the work’s impressive scale and majesty. The work transcends the typical role of the concerto as a mere virtuoso vehicle – indeed it is virtually symphonic in conception with its expansive form and grand character granting the concerto a place among the defining works in the composer’s heroic vein.

They recently began work on two new CD recordings featuring the complete works of Beethoven for cello and piano. Symphony of the Gods Mostly Mozart Mozart’s last symphony is his greatest – a culmination of his intelligence, musical genius and virtuosity presented on the grandest of scales. With its shifting moods of jovial good humour and driving energy, it’s no wonder that this symphony was nicknamed after the king of the gods. Mozart’s Olympian powers of creation reach their peak in a finale where melodies ecstatically intertwine in masterly polyphony. The ‘Paganini of the Double Bass’ 19thcentury virtuoso Giovanni Bottesini composed prolifically for his instrument, including three concerti which elegantly

One of the most enduringly popular composers of all time.

Some say it’s a gem from Schuman’s year of song, others that it is over simplified and politically questionable. Frauenliebe und-lieben continues to charm many while alienating others and shades of everything in between. A controversial cycle that illustrates the power of song to provoke feelings and reactions across a broad spectrum. This man’s view of a woman’slove story will be colourfully brought to life by Siobhan Stagg and Eidit Golder. It has been paired for this concert with a selection of songs whichcapture the love affair of a man with his homeland. Chopin’s music isadored by many but even some of his fans are not familiar with his song compositions. Karen Van Spall will give you a taste of these gorgeous and not often heard delights.
