Ruth Roshan & Tango Noir

Ruth Roshan & Tango Noir launch their third, original album, Stories of Love and Regret. Influenced by European tango and waltz, evoking the atmosphere of a 1930s French Salon, this concert combines lush arrangements with Ruth's bittersweet lyrics to create music which is both elegant and beautiful, new and nostalgic all at once.

Sarah McLachlan Multi-platinum singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan returns to Australia performing material from her latest album Shine On alongside her beloved fan favourites. With more than 25 years in the music industry, Sarah is one of the most celebrated and respected female performers of all time, selling more than 40 million albums worldwide and receiving three Grammy Awards and eight Juno Awards (Canada). Before she turned 20, McLachlan released her gold debut album, Touch in 1988 in her native Canada. Less than a year later the album was reissued worldwide, as McLachlan began to develop beyond her cult status in the US and build a devoted following internationally. In 1997 McLachlan’s landmark 10-time platinum album Surfacing was released, the album contained two Grammy winning tracks; ‘Building a Mystery’ and ‘Last Dance’.

6

On top of all her success, Sarah McLachlan is best known and loved for her intimate vocals and relatable lyrics. Her latest album Shine On is McLachlan’s first full-length recording of new material in four years and explores McLachlan’s personal journey over the last few years navigating love, loss and change – it celebrates the human ability to grow from our experiences, thrive and shine on. The Necks The Necks are one of the most distinctive and enthralling groups in music. The hard-earned, almost telepathic rapport that Chris Abrahams, Lloyd Swanton and Tony Buck have developed over the past 26 years is truly one of the most compelling in live music and it is with much anticipation that this formidable group is welcomed to Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. Featuring mesmerising pieces that slowly unravel and insistent deep grooves, the deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is possibly unique in the world today.

J Mascis In the quarter-century since J Mascis founded Dinosaur Jr., Mascis has created some of the era’s signature songs, albums and styles. As a skier, golfer, songwriter, skateboarder, record producer and musician, J has few peers. The laconically-based roar of his guitar, drums and vocals have driven a long string of bands; Deep Wound, Dinosaur Jr., Gobblehoof, Velvet Monkeys, the Fog, Witch, and Sweet Apple. J's solo work on his latest album Tied to a Star is of incredible beauty, performed with a delicacy not always associated with his work. ‘Tied to a Star showcases the soft intricacy of a veteran craftsman who knows when to hang back and decide to pulverize another day. Mascis has shown this sort of versatility before, but rarely with such straight-ahead beauty in his arsenal.’ National Public Radio (USA)

GREAT PERFORMERS 2015

Christian Tetzlaff The Naked Violin

‘A bold artist with an instinctive feeling for the wild side in music.’ The New York Times The Frankfurt-based violinist has technique and charisma in spades, but what sets him apart from other musicians is his ability to immerse himself entirely in the world of the composer whose music he is recreating. Whether he is a valiant soloist battling a symphony orchestra, a chamber musician crafting intimate melodies among friends, or a recitalist, alone on stage, all his efforts are focused on finding an ideal sound. Not his ideal sound; the music’s. Tetzlaff last appeared at Melbourne Recital Centre with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Now he returns to give a solo recital: just him, his 1901 Stefan-Peter Greiner violin, and the music of Bach, Bartók and Ysaÿe. When an industrious kapellmeister from Leipzig wrote a set of six sonatas and partitas for unaccompanied violin in the early 18th century, no-one took much notice. It was more than a century later that J.S. Bach’s solo violin works found a home at the heart of the virtuoso violin repertoire. The dense harmonic layering, complex fugue and quicksilver dance movements of Bach’s Sonata No.3 in C major have inspired many homages, including the first Sonata from Eugene Ysaÿe’s set of six, and the tough but dazzling solo sonata of Béla Bartók. This is a precious opportunity to hear all three. MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE • FEBRUARY

Internationally acclaimed composer and pianist Chris Jarrett meets up with worldwide busy improviser and magician of the violin Luca Ciarla for a unique duo along the borders of contemporary music and jazz. Luca Ciarla's sprite-like-playing and the quick-fingered expressivity of Chris Jarrett's improvisations collide; sometimes following parallel paths and other times going in different directions only to meet at a common goal. This concert is a fascinating blend of the accessible and the challenging with a magnetic musical appeal.

‘(Chris Jarrett) feels at home in the world of spontaneity, plays outside of all categories, and surprises the listener with sound experiments which, in spite of all the freedom, follow an inner logic. Such unconventional, fresh-saucy and humorous music makes you hungry for more.’ Jazzpodium (Germany) INFORMATION Wed 18 February 7.30pm Elisabeth Murdoch Hall (One hour & 50-mins incl. interval) Luca Ciarla violin (ITALY) Chris Jarret piano (USA) A reserve $50 ($45 concession) B reserve $40 ($35 concession) Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre

Tafelmusik House of Dreams Musica Viva brings the Baroque era to life with Tafelmusik’s House of Dreams, a stunning exploration of music, art and drama. Alison Mackay (creator of The Galileo Project) has woven together a magical journey that allows audiences to step into the world of Bach and Vivaldi by imaginatively ‘visiting’ five historic European houses. On the walls hang works by Vermeer, Canaletto and Watteau; the airy rooms ring to the sounds of the finest composers and performers. In these concerts, the music is provided by the period instruments of the renowned Tafelmusik

Baroque Orchestra. Accompanied by images from London, Paris, Delft, Leipzig and Venice, House of Dreams draws us into the very buildings where the great composers and their patrons once walked, played, and listened, and includes detailed projections of now-famous paintings that these composers would have known when newly produced. Narrator Blair Williams is the tour guide, leading us through the hallways and salons, sharing stories of the people who lived, worked and dreamed in these remarkable homes.

Starting with a voyage into fantasy with Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel overture, a panoply of hummable tunes taking you deeper and deeper into the enchanted forest. The second voyage is into the composer’s mind: ‘I’d like to write a violin concerto next winter,’ wrote Mendelssohn, ‘one in E minor sticks in my head, the beginning of which will not leave me in peace.’ It took him six years of wrestling with that tune to bring it to fruition. In 1985 the ASQ's first public concert opened, as this one does with Haydn's powerful ‘Emperor’ Quartet. Another landmark in 2015 is the centenary of the ANZAC landing in Gallipoli. The Quartet marks the occasion with the world premiere of an evocative and moving work titled Gallipoli by one of Australia's best-known composers, Ross Edwards. Shostakovich's third string quartet was the only work completed by the composer in 1946. This five movement work is full of emotion and questioning – with passionate hopes for a better future as we move forward.

A deeply personal work on the importance of individual freedom, Beethoven’s incidental music to Goethe’s Egmont features a score that positively crackles with the play’s rich themes of love and heroic defiance. Written a few years after the ‘Eroica’ Symphony at a time when Napoleon was extending his domination over Europe, Egmont is a stirring tribute to courage in the face of adversity. Join Australia’s most charismatic musical personality, Richard Gill and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra on an interactive journey through this immortal piece of music. Flinders Quartet

2015 marks the 150th anniversary of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, whom some describe as ‘the last of the romantics.’ Flinders Quartet celebrates the life of this great composer, exploring two of his marvellously romantic string quartets; numbers 1 and 2. What better companion for Sibelius than the crystal clarity of Mozart and his String Quartet No.17 ‘The Hunt’, one of six quartets dedicated to Haydn that Mozart wrote in 1784. Since 2000 Flinders Quartet has performed with some of the country’s best musicians, toured nationally and internationally, and commissioned numerous Australian works for string quartet. Fifteen years on, Flinders Quartet is thrilled to be continuing its journey

with a 2015 season that showcases their passion for playing the greatest music written for string quartet. INFORMATION

The Sixteen: The Queen of Heaven Five centuries of sacred choral music, including Allegri’s Miserere With 30-years of world-wide performance and recording, The Sixteen is recognised as one of the world's greatest vocal ensembles. Its reputation for performing masterpieces from Renaissance to the 20th century is showcased in this concert, The Queen of Heaven, exploring the music of three composers unique in their devotion to the music of the Church. Sibelius 150 Trio

The Sibelius 150 Trio formed to celebrate the musical legacy of Finland's foremost national composer, Jean Sibelius, for the 150th anniversary of his birth in 2015. Although best known for his epic and spacious symphonic works, Sibelius also left behind a multifaceted body of music for chamber–sized forces. Rarely heard today, these works reveal a darker, more intimate side to Sibelius' character. In this program, the Sibelius 150 Trio explore works from throughout Sibelius' life, ranging from the early ‘Loviisa’ Trio, to the late Danses champêtres Op.106, which share many characteristics with the late symphonies.

INFORMATION Thu 12 March 6pm Salon (70-mins no interval) SIBELIUS Four Lyric Pieces for piano, Op.74 Danses champêtres for violin & piano, Op.106 Malinconia for cello & piano, Op.20 Piano Trio in C, ‘Loviisa’ Theme and Variations for solo cello Sibelius 150 Trio (FINLAND) Tickets $38 ($28 concession) Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre

Carnival of Souls

Before your very eyes Live Live Cinema will thrill you with musicians performing the soundtrack, a brilliant cast of actors dramatising every-line and a Foley artist recreating those spine-tingling sounds. The Live Live Cinema crew takes the concept of live cinema seriously. Rather than simply having an ensemble perform a new score to a silent film, a sound film is shown and all audio is produced live. The result is an immersive audio/visual environment, an integrated conversation between cinema, theatre, music and sound design, and a unique and vibrant ‘live live’ cinematic experience. Double the trouble and buy tickets to two classic 1960s horror flicks and a host of live performers saving $30 on single tickets. They perform inspired programs that feature a dynamic interplay of song and chamber music. Cello Romance pairs the mellow tones of the cello and bass-baritone voice (Nicholas Dinopoulos) in a voyage through Europe, from Northern Russia to Southern Italy. They continue the exploration of Schumann through his chamber music with a performance of the famous Adagio and Allegro, heard here in the version for cello together with chamber music by Tchaikovsky and Fauré and songs by Ravel, Borodin and Verdi.

Keb’ Mo’ Three-time Grammy winner and visionary roots-music storyteller Keb’ Mo’ (born Kevin Moore) embarks on a new chapter in his career with the release of his new album BLUESAmericana. Since the release of his self-titled debut in 1994, the blues guitarist has been one of the most successful musicians in the genre. This 12th full-length album marks his 20th anniversary, but, more important, the disc is a signpost of artistic and personal growth. ‘I never set out to be a ‘blues guy’,’ he explains, ‘but the blues is very powerful and fuels what I do. The blues puts the ‘realness’ in it for me.’ Over the past two decades Keb' has cultivated a reputation as a modern master of American roots music through the understated excellence of his live and studio performances. His songs have been recorded by B.B. King, Buddy Guy, the Dixie Chicks, Joe Crocker and Robert Palmer.
