Welcome Join us for inspiring music at Melbourne Recital Centre this autumn. In April, the Centre presents legendary blues and roots artists Mavis Staples, Beth Hart, John Mayall, Angélique Kidjo, and ukulele wunderkind Jake Shimabukuro, while the Great Performers series continues with Canadian pianist Louis Lortie playing the exquisite preludes of Chopin, Fauré and Scriabin. May sees the return of the Metropolis New Music Festival, our annual exploration of fascinating contemporary music in collaboration with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in music inspired by the moving image, including Tan Dun’s score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In June, author/pianist Anna Goldsworthy brings us Piano Lessons, in a unique blend of recital and theatre based on her acclaimed book. In addition to hosting unforgettable concerts, the Centre plays an increasing role in developing the next generation of performers. In January we were thrilled to receive $136,000 in funding from The Department of Education and Training to support the development of selected outstanding young musicians. Four passionate and skilled young performers will gain access to the Centre’s world-class musicians and resources through their participation in ACCELERANDO – a three-year mentoring program for gifted and talented music students in their senior secondary years. If you’re as passionate as we are about providing opportunities for young musicians, consider making a donation to the Centre’s programs when you purchase tickets online or visit melbournerecital.com.au/support to learn more.
Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, is proud to partner with Melbourne Recital Centre. The partnership enables Etihad Airways to enrich the experience of Centre patrons by bringing internationally renowned performers to Melbourne from across the world. This year we are excited to connect the Centre with more cultural hubs than ever before as we expand our global network with eight new destinations including Rome and Zurich. We also look forward to showcasing the quality of our guest experience and our modern Abu Dhabi hub to new, discerning audiences.
I look forward to welcoming you to a concert soon.

Louis
Lortie
Poet of the Piano GREAT PERFORMERS 2015
‘Lortie’s sparkling and swarthy playing is impressively glamorous.’ BBC Music Magazine
The ‘ever imaginative, ever immaculate’ Canadian pianist Louis Lortie has become a regular visitor to Australia in the last 10 years. Audiences are ever keen to hear how this sophisticated artist picks his way through the lush extravagances of the Romantic repertoire. Playing Chopin with grand bravado is one thing; inhabiting it, finding the quiet heart and communicating that with an earnest clarity is quite another. This is where Lortie comes in. Lortie’s early studies in Montreal were with Yvonne Hubert, herself a student of the legendary Alfred Cortot, famous for her interpretations of Chopin. Lortie has thus taken the wisdom of two generations and added his own, searching insights to
create a unique and compelling sound world. But Chopin is just the beginning for this program. Gabriel Fauré and Alexander Scriabin both took inspiration from Chopin’s Preludes as they began exploring the sonic possibilities of the piano and, like Lortie, they brought their own, highly individual voices to the genre. To mark the centenary of Alexander Scriabin’s death, Lortie performs his Op.11 Preludes in their entirety, alongside the sometimes terse, sometimes elegiac Preludes of Gabriel Fauré, written as he faded gently from life. This is not just piano music. This is three-dimensional sound, lovingly sculpted to reveal the delicate lines, the invisible dances, the unspoken words of three poets of the piano.

Trio Anima Mundi explores borrowed ideas for compositions
Trio Anima Mundi
Something Borrowed presents three works which use material borrowed from other sources. In the case of the variations by Ludwig van Beethoven, the main theme is from Wenzel Müller’s song ‘Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu’. For the works by Bedrich Smetana and Kenji Fujimura, each composer has ‘borrowed’ material from their own previous compositions; the theme of the final movement of the Smetana Piano Trio is taken from his earlier Piano Sonata in G minor, and Fujimura borrows ideas from his own earlier work Au Revoir for violin and piano. For Melbourne Recital Centre in 2015, Augie March - Glenn Richards, Kiernan Box, Edmondo Ammendola, Adam Donovan and Dave Williams, plus long-time alumni The Arnold Horns - will play a special concert featuring songs from throughout their 17-year career. For a band that creates rare sounds on a regular basis, and take great care to get their wonderful songs just how they would like them, this concert promises to be one for the ages. Augie March's return to the live stage after the hiatus came in the form of playing a show a few streets away from the scene of their
first-ever show 16 years earlier, in Brunswick Victoria. They ended up playing for five nights, by popular demand. It was indeed a triumphant return, with the band in best-ever form, enjoying themselves for the first time in a long time. Taking to the stage ahead of Augie March will be local troubadour Fraser A Gorman, described by The Music as 'A concoction of old-west country tunes and Australian charm-of-youth conversation... fresh and familiar.' Infinite Variations
A unique perspective from which to experience Bach’s greatest keyboard work J.S. Bach’s timeless masterpiece, The Goldberg Variations, is re-imagined for two pianos. Premiered by Stephen Emmerson and Sonya Lifschitz in 2012 at the Four Winds Festival, this mesmerising arrangement conjures up the same sense of awe that comes from watching a sunrise, touching sandstone, or listening to the patterns in the sounds of the rain. The exquisite counterpoint and the transcendent spiritual beauty of Bach’s masterpiece, made poignant and irresistible by the two pianists engaging in a musical dialogue, add a sheen of pure wonder to the totality of musical experience. 13 Ways of Looking at the Goldberg is a present-day reflection and sonic commentary on Bach’s most revered work, re-conceptualised by America’s leading composers from the perspective of a post-

UNDINE THE SPIRIT OF WATER
Melbourne Piano Trio gives world premieres by two of Australia's leading composers – the second commissioned work for the trio by Paul Dean following the success of Fractured Moments and an exciting new collaboration from film specialist Christopher de Groot. In-between the two premieres, the Trio explores the work of Japan's leading film composer Sakamoto who has won Grammy, Academy and Golden Globe awards for his compositions.
Syzygy Ensemble explores the idea of music as water, of sound as a fluid entity. Marc Yeats’ recent works are deliberately ‘unsynchronised’ – each part is meticulously notated but does not need to vertically align with any other part; Neils Rønsholdt plays with the fluidity of memory, and on the way a single thought can be etched into the brain and yet continually transformed; for Helena Tulve, the analogy is more literal – Stream draws out long lines of liquid sound from each instrument, from the tiniest trickle to great gushing oceans. This concert includes a video collaboration with visual artist Agatha Yim.

SHAUN TAN'S THE ARRIVAL The inventive graphic stories by internationally renowned illustrator Shaun Tan have already migrated from page to screen, with the Oscar-winning film The Lost Thing. In Tan's much-loved book The Arrival we follow the melancholic yet hopeful adventures of a refugee in a strange world. Celebrated composer Ben Walsh brings this story to life in a live sonic-scape, performed by a 10-piece band ‘Orkestra of The Underground’, with projections of Tan's exquisite illustrations.
‘Ben Walsh has an innate talent for bringing talented individuals together around musical projects. His Orkestra Of The Underground pools the diverse and creative talent of Australia's music scene towards composition projects.’ Time Out Sydney
World respected percussionist Ben Walsh randomly discovered The Arrival in a bookshop. He fell in love with the work and immediately imagined the whole story brought to life in sound. This masterpiece of visual storytelling has inspired superlative reviews and awards from across the globe. Sequential narrative, devoid of text, places a renewed focus on the illustrations to tell the story. The Arrival’s sepia toned work is some of the most compelling work produced – straddling the line between graphic novel and picture book. DARK TWIN
Zubin Kanga
London-based pianist, Zubin Kanga returns to Melbourne with Dark Twin: music of deception and mystery for piano and multimedia. With a host of world and Australian premieres of works by Julian Day, Cat Hope, Michel van der Aa and Steve Reich, Dark Twin explores the potential for multiple identities, malevolent doppelgängers and mysterious landscapes in music that expands the sonic and visual capabilities of the piano. Whether interacting with distorted and warped piano sounds, playing through an avatar, creating massive walls of sound or grooving within an invisible piano ensemble, the works toy with and subvert the concept of a ‘solo’ piano recital.
INFORMATION
Described as ‘visionary’ by The New Yorker, Australian virtuoso pianist Lisa Moore presents a multi-dimensional solo concert using her voice and projected imagery in works by Philip Glass and Martin Bresnick. This remarkable music is inspired by evocative concepts found in motion pictures, opera, Ghandi, Buddhism and William Blake. Philip Glass' Mad Rush was composed for the Dalai Lama's entrance into New York's St. John the Divine Cathedral; Metamorphosis One and Two were written for the movies The Thin Blue Line and The Hours; and the Act III conclusion to the opera Satyagraha projects the spirit of non-violent resistance. Martin Bresnick's For the Sexes: The Gates of Paradise is a 30-minute dramatic solo oratorio-fantasia composed for
a singing and speaking pianist, inspired by William Blake's 1820s original text and template collection using projected imagery of drawings and illuminated manuscripts.

THE LIGHT
LIGHT IS CALLING
Brawny punk energy and electrifying sonic images abound in Fuel, Julia Wolfe’s multimedia collaboration with filmmaker Bill Morrison, which explores the global implications of the fossil fuel economy. Tan Dun’s Crouching Tiger Concerto, a concert work based on the composer’s Academy Awardwinning score to Ang Lee’s martial arts epic, provides an exquisite contrast with poignant themes unfurling over six movements, connected by a glorious cello cadenza. The Light, Phillip Glass’ first full scoring for symphony orchestra, is a hypnotic, continually evolving reflection on the way great moments of clarity can metaphorically ‘illuminate’ intellectual and scientific endeavour. Its starting point: the famous 1887 Michelson-Morley Experiment, in which American physicists determined the velocity of the speed of light, setting the scene for Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. This concert will also include a new work commissioned as part of the MSO’s Cybec 21st-Century Australian Composers Program.

This captivating program features virtuosic solos written by minimalist heroes Steve Reich, Michael Gordon and Nico Muhly for percussion, violin and clarinet, and two Australian trios – a world premiere by Brisbane composer Christopher Perrena based on the movement of underwater divers, and the stunning Fractured Again Suite inspired by splintering glass, from the group's co-artistic director Damien Ricketson with video by Andrew Wholley.

A shared belief in the transformative power of music and a spirit of intrepid adventure led award-winning British composer Max Richter to take a Baroque classic – Vivaldi’s Four Seasons – and reimagine it for orchestra and synthesiser, and for Paul Dyer to take up the challenge to present the recomposed piece with period instruments, and to take the reins of the synthesiser himself. The result is an audacious creation that takes the audience through the same landscape of spring, summer, autumn and winter but with a renewed sense of the indestructible genius of
Vivaldi’s work. Staying faithful to the structure of the canon, Richter’s Recomposed Four Seasons is in turns beautiful, peaceful and serene, yet also wild, passionate and intensely emotional. LOCAL HEROES 2015
To thine own self be true Tinalley String Quartet presents an evening of powerful music making inspired by loss, grief and acceptance. Purcell’s Fantasias, conceived for four viols, an ensemble rapidly losing favour with players and audiences, are pure fantasy, exciting with wild dissonances, complex timbres and visceral discourse. Shostakovich’s Seventh Quartet in the tragic key of F-sharp minor is perhaps a musical study of marriage, composed following the sudden death of his first wife. Beethoven’s Op.59, No.3 Quartet exposes the troubled soul of a man wrestling with his deafness; notes above the sketch cry out ‘Let your deafness no longer be a secret – not even in art’.

GREAT PERFORMERS 2015
Paavali Jumppanen Heart on Sleeve Paavali Jumppanen is one of the many musical prodigies to have emerged from the tiny Republic of Finland in recent years. Is it the remote location, the long winters, an enlightened approach to music education, or just happenstance? Whichever way, it is always a pleasure to experience the fresh insights and intense passion of this brilliant young pianist. Since his last visit to Australia, Jumppanen has taken time out from his busy touring schedule to undertake an intensive study of the music of Romantic renegade Robert Schumann.
Schumann’s Piano Sonata No.1, dedicated to Clara Wieck, is not so much a love letter as a personal manifesto, a confessional declaration of this brilliant but troubled artist’s character. That his beloved Clara went on to become his wife proves that truth is a powerful weapon indeed. Alongside Schumann’s passionate outpourings, Jumppanen offers two telling contrasts. The spare poetry and Eastern twang of Claude Debussy’s first book of Préludes cuts through Schumann’s Romanticism
to reveal a very different side of the piano. And finally, who better to play the music of Jean Sibelius, the father of Finnish music, in the sesquicentennial anniversary of his birth? GREAT PERFORMERS 2015
Nikolai Demidenko Great Expectations The only predictable thing about a recital by Nikolai Demidenko is that it will be thrilling. Throw away your preconceptions of Russian pianists and Polish composers and prepare to be astonished – Nikolai Demidenko has been surprising audiences for nearly half a century. Brought up in Moscow, he came to the West in the 80s and made England his home in 1990. Since then, he has become an intrinsic part of the musical landscape, teaching, recording and performing with Europe’s great orchestras and leading conductors. His Russian heritage naturally lends him an authority in Russian repertoire, but this powerful and charismatic artist does not confine himself to the great barnstorming works of his homeland. Demidenko is also celebrated as an astute and very different interpreter of Chopin, winning the 2010 MIDEM Special Chopin Award for his recent recording of the 24 Preludes. For this recital he immerses himself in the espaces imaginaires of Chopin, from the agitated Sonata No.2 to the mesmerising stillness of Berceuse. He also brings us a very personal selection of nocturnes and scherzi which, besides offering a dazzling demonstration of pianism, may reveal some radical new ideas about old friends.

After continuously touring Europe, 20 tours of the USA including two sold-out concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, French quintet Paris Combo returns to Australia for the first time in over a decade. Delightfully cosmopolitan and seductively swinging, Paris Combo is as diverse and sophisticated as the city from which the band hails. Combining gypsy swing with elements of flamenco, chanson and alt-cabaret, the quintet mixes in Latin and North African rhythms for good measure. Holding all the diverse elements together is the sprightly vocalist Belle du Berry, who’s joined by Australian trumpeter/keyboardist David Lewis, jazz bassist Emmanuel Chabbey, French drummer François Jeannin, and Potzi, an Algerian gypsy guitarist whose virtuosic style and natty appearance recalls Django Reinhardt. Formed in the early 1990s, the group had its origin in the retro review Champêtres de Joie, which performed in the historic Berry Zèbre cinema in Paris’ Belleville district and collaborated with renowned choreographer Philippe Decouflé at the closing ceremony of the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville.

Press, Play sees three of Melbourne’s most acclaimed and diverse musicians, Lina Andonovska (flute), Leah Scholes (percussion) and Sonya Lifschitz (piano), come together to engage listeners in an intimate and exhilarating musical journey. Part concert, part theatre, Declaration explores musical works that demand the musicians engage with the audience. The works on this program challenge established musical traditions and dismantle the walls typically separating the performer from the audience as they play, narrate, speak and sing, creating a unique, whimsical, deeply personal and unforgettable musical experience. INFORMATION Thu 25 June 6pm Salon (One hour no interval) Works by Balter, Globokar, Brady, Davidson, Dean, Rotaru & others Press, Play Tickets $38 ($28 concession) Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre Supported by The Robert Salzer Foundation
