Welcome Welcome to Melbourne Recital Centre’s winter concert guide, encompassing superb music from Beethoven to bluegrass. In July, the brilliant German virtuoso pianist Lars Vogt (see page 9) performs two famous and profound works for his instrument: Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No.32, one of his final and most celestial pieces for the piano. If you’ve enjoyed these works on radio or CD, you must experience them live in the Centre’s Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, one of the most beautiful rooms in the world. Lovers of the guitar and its relatives are in for a treat in August when dapper alt-folk darlings Punch Brothers return. Jazz guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel and his brilliant trio, and husband and wife banjoists Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn round out a knock-out week of guitar genius (see pages 16–17 for details). In September, we’re delighted to welcome the Israel Camerata Jerusalem Orchestra and cello soloist Zvi Plesser (see page 30). The dynamic chamber orchestra conducted by Avner Biron, is one of Israel’s finest cultural exports — and they’ll perform works from the heart of the repertoire by Schubert, Haydn and Bartók, including Dvořak’s Cello Concerto. There’s much more to explore in the following pages. If you have any questions about what to see, contact our friendly box office representatives on 03 9699 3333 or visit melbournerecital.com.au to learn more. This will be my last introduction to you as I retire from the role of CEO of Melbourne Recital Centre at the end of June. I cherish the time I have spent leading the Centre, one of Melbourne’s greatest cultural assets. I’ll be joining you as a member of the audience on a very regular basis to enjoy music at the best place to hear it — and certainly my favourite. Thank you for your ongoing support of Melbourne Recital Centre. I look forward to seeing you at a concert soon.

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, is proud to be a partner of Melbourne Recital Centre. By bringing internationally acclaimed artists from around the world, Etihad Airways is able to enrich the experience of Centre patrons. With the opening of our new Premium Lounge at Melbourne Airport and the commencement of our A380 flights between Melbourne and Abu Dhabi on June 1, we look forward to flying Victorians to the world’s cultural hubs in more style than ever before. We trust you will enjoy the superior quality of our guest experience and make a stopover to marvel at the wonders of our home, Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Warm regards

The Australian String Quartet performs on a matched set of instruments hand-crafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini. Their Melbourne performance will excite with a program of early Classical, Romantic and local contemporary works. Webern managed to condense a lifetime of thoughts into the five succinct and beautifully crafted gems that seem to disappear right before our ears in his Five Movements for String Quartet. Haydn’s early String Quartet in C counters this with well-balanced classical logic and stark beauty. The fresh and quick-fire new style in Australian composer/pianist Joe Chindamo’s Tempesta, is a world away from the palpable anguish and heart-torn emotion in Mendelssohn’s final

quartet, written in despair following the death of his sister Fanny. It was to be his last quartet. Featuring new ground-breaking arrangements, members of Melbourne Guitar Quartet adopt the roles of both soloists as well as mirroring various orchestral accompaniments. The premiere of Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto Madrigal for two guitars, arranged for guitar quartet, is sure to be a thrilling tour de force.

Ensemble Liaison welcomes back Nemanja Radulović for his third appearance in the Ensemble Liaison & Friends series. In just a few years, Nemanja has taken the classical music world by storm with his virtuosic and dynamic playing. Signing an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Gramophon in 2014, he is in demand as a soloist around the world. La Seccatura — Haydn, Schubert & Hummel orchestra seventeen88 is described by Limelight magazine as 'an important addition to Australia's musical landscape.' Under the Artistic Direction of conductor Richard Gill OAM, the group draws repertoire from the late Rococo to the Romantic era in their historically informed performances. Four of Australia’s most renowned chamber musicians (Nicole van Bruggen, Rachael Beesley, Simon Oswell and Michael Dahlenburg) step off the international stage to perform La Seccatura which features Viennese classical chamber music including an arrangement of Haydn string quartets, published in the early 1800s for clarinet, violin, viola and cello by Vincenzo Gambaro. This arrangement brings together movements from various quartets, including the famous ‘Sunrise’ quartet, to create a new work of stunning naiveté and poignancy. Schubert’s

Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge Stephen Layton is one of the leading choral directors of our time. His ‘home’ choir is at Trinity College, Cambridge, where the fresh young voices of male and female undergraduates are carefully auditioned for sought after places in what was recently named one of Gramophone Magazine’s 20 Greatest Choirs. Stephen Layton and the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge will perform one of the 20th century’s most beautiful choral works: the 1922 ‘Mass for Unaccompanied Double Choir’ by Frank Martin. The composer regarded it as an intensely personal spiritual expression — it took 40 years for him to allow it to be heard — and it has never left the spotlight since. Surrounding Martin’s masterpiece is a rich cache of smaller pieces.

Of special note are two new works: one by the choir’s Organ Scholar, Owain Park; and another by the Australian Joe Twist, commissioned especially for this tour. Three composers from three different continents all explored the same feeling of inner unease caused by their powerlessness to change circumstances in the outer world. Quartz’s latest performance examines this universal truth through the works of Shostakovich and Vine before culminating with Barber’s Dover Beach, an exquisite setting of the famous 1867 poem by Matthew Arnold. The turmoil expressed in the poem, which in turn refers to writing by Sophocles in the 5th century BCE, is still keenly felt in our own 21st century. Indeed, perhaps that eternal note of sadness, and a troubled feeling of unease with the circumstances in which we find ourselves, is a universal human condition. GREAT PERFORMERS 2016

Lars Vogt Beethoven, Bach & Beyond ‘SIMPLICITY, WIT AND HONESTY.’ THE GUARDIAN

Pianists don’t enter lightly into an engagement with two of music’s most towering intellects, Beethoven and Bach. Both these composers can provide a life’s work for a musician as they endeavour to master not just the music, but also the ideas within. Beethoven — especially his later works — wants to reveal eternity. The most profound expression of this is his final piano sonata. Laying aside the storm and stress of the turbulent first movement, Beethoven presents a simple little song before showing how it — and we — can be forever transformed into something — celestial. Some philosophies can only be expressed in music.

Beethoven’s arietta has a precedent in the stately aria that sets in motion the joyous outpouring of musical invention that is Bach’s ‘Goldberg Variations’. Bach’s music comes from the place where his heart and mind meet, and the Goldbergs give us a glimpse into both: exhilarating Baroque fireworks contrast with intricate canons and fugues, tragedy is followed by rustic humour or beatific happiness. Each variation is more dazzling than the last but Bach ends not with a bang, but with his beginning aria creating a symbol of endless return of the world itself. Lars Vogt refers to the Goldbergs as a ‘sacred object’. This intrepid pianist will lead us through Bach and Beethoven’s wonders. One of the most versatile and brilliant musicians on the scene, Vogt’s recording of the ‘Goldberg Variations’ was a critical and commercial hit, topping the classical charts in Europe.

Naples is the birthplace of the Musical Conservatory. With its own rich folk music tradition, as well as local composers who included Scarlatti, Pergolesi, Bononcini, Porpora and Durante, there is scarcely a composer in the first half of the 1700s who was not influenced by Neapolitan music. Ludovico’s Band, one of Australia’s most dynamic baroque bands, explores this transformative musical period. The band is acclaimed for its performances of music from the 16th to 18th centuries and the combination of multiple plucked string instruments with soaring violins and a rich bowed bass creates a unique and exotic sound world. Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn

‘WITH WARMTH AND WIT, THE HUSBAND-AND-WIFE DUO REVEAL THE EXTRAORDINARY EXPRESSION OF A MUCHMALIGNED INSTRUMENT.’ THE GUARDIAN

16

Banjoists Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn have mastered the deceptively intricate art of the duet. Their performances embrace a diversity almost unthinkable — coming from just two banjos and one voice. Washburn’s beguiling composing, playing and singing blend with Fleck’s riveting and virtuosic musicianship to create music both unique yet familiar in texture. Fleck, a 15-time Grammy Award winner, has collaborated with Chick Corea, Oumou Sangare, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, Dave Mathews, Earl Scruggs, and the entire Cleveland Orchestra for his Banjo Concert 'The Impostor'. Washburn’s banjo has taken her far beyond the usual old-timey comfort zone, musically and geographically. An alumnus of Uncle

Earl, the powerhouse all-female string-band, Abby’s adopted second homeland is China, and her music resounds with echoes of Appalachia and the tidal wave of emerging Chinese cultural influence. Together, Fleck and Washburn employ the relatively rare three-finger and claw hammer banjo style to create an explosion of musical white heat. Spirit of India:

Sujata Mohapatra — Odissi Dancer India’s favourite Odissi dancer, Sujata Mohapatra, dances to music that sings of love, based on the Gita Govinda lovestory of Krishna and Radha. A disciple of the great guru Kelucharan, Sujata Mohapatra is the finest Odissi dancer today and a national Indian icon for the dance form. Odissi is the oldest and most beautiful form of India’s eight classical dance styles, originating from the state of Orissa on the Indian east coast. Its themes consist of love in various manifestations — both secular and divine. This dance is characterised by stamping of the foot and striking various postures as seen in Indian sculptures. This dance form went out of favour as the corrupt priests came to abuse the institution of the ‘Devdasi’ (servant of the Gods) dancers and was suppressed by the British Indian government. It was later revived in 1958 during the Nehru regime and has since produced a number of great teachers and dancers of which Sujata is one of them.

GREAT PERFORMERS 2016

Baiba Skride — Inner Worlds with Daniel de Borah

Baiba Skride is one of those artists who hide an iron will behind a disarming smile. The Latvian-born violinist can definitely do charm — as you’ll hear in her Mozart — but it’s in the tense dialogue of Shostakovich’s Violin Sonata or the barely-supressed passion in the Brahms that her ability to almost ruthlessly expose an emotional inner world comes to the fore, given resonant voice by her 1734 Stradivarius. While her technical mastery and beauty of sound place her in high demand, it is her instinctual command of a composer’s idiom — her seemingly natural affinity with everything — that sets her apart. Skride can play everything from Mozart to Shostakovich and make it seem like it was written for her. Her left-of-field selection for this recital emphasises the darker side of the great composers. Mozart’s short sonata closes with one of the most melancholy dances in the repertoire, Schumann’s fantasy pieces are masterpieces of weltschmerz (melancholy), while Brahms’ irresolute sonata reflects flashes of sun through storm clouds. These are just a warm-up for the searing power of Shostakovich’s late violin sonata, one of the most uncompromising and magisterial chamber pieces of the 20th century. With the utmost economy, Shostakovich unravels a disquieting stream of thought and feeling — meditative, savage and unspeakably tragic. Baiba Skride and associate artist Daniel de Borah are the ideal musicians to make Shostakovich speak to us again. INFORMATION

From Ravel to Sondheim In a recent interview, Stephen Sondheim listed Ravel as the most formative influence on his compositional style. The Concord of Strangers Renaissance music contrasted with the sounds of Australia old and new

THE SONG COMPANY

In 1616, the same year that Shakespeare died, Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog in his ship Eendracht (The Concord) landed off the coast of Shark Bay and became the first European to leave a record of his visit to the Australian continent. Word of his voyage encouraged further navigation, and ultimately led to a shared history described by Tim Flannery as neither a simple tale of European triumph and possession or just ‘a kind of abomination — the penetration of a fragile continent.’ The Concord of Strangers contrasts Renaissance music from Hartog’s period with the sounds of Australia old and new.

Quartz: Rare Gems Some very beautiful pieces are rarely heard live, due not to a lack of quality, but a lack of fame; Quartz showcases three of them. Fanny Mendelssohn had at least as much innate talent, and a similar musical education, to her much more revered brother, Felix. The well-defined gender roles of her lifetime, however, kept her considerable skill, displayed in her String Quartet in E-flat, very much

under wraps. Ervin Schulhoff’s compositions are beginning to be discovered by modern ensembles, but his career and reputation were damaged by political circumstances and he died in a Nazi concentration camp. Frank Bridge was a highly competent and imaginative yet unassuming character, whose instinct did not fit with the powerful establishment of his time. The musical mastery of these three composers will come to the fore in Rare Gems.

Mooncalf Mooncalf is a 45-minute work by Marty Hicks and Georgie Darvidis. A treatise on the beauty of imperfection, impermanence and fragility, the work draws on a multitude of influences spanning literature, film and history. Revelling in the moments in music that would normally be discreetly shifted aside — such as audible breaths, extraneous noises, cracks in the voice and the rustling of material and machine inside the piano — Mooncalf heralds these as sounds sharing the same value and beauty as the notes that are a product of them, celebrating the inescapable humanity and inherent imperfection of making music.

Israel Camerata Jerusalem Orchestra The acclaimed Israel Camerata Jerusalem Orchestra makes its Australian debut at Melbourne Recital Centre. The Israel Camerata Jerusalem Orchestra is the leading chamber orchestra in Israel today. Founded in 1983 by Avner Biron, who has been its music director and permanent conductor since then, the story of the Israel Camerata Jerusalem is unique. As an experiment in Israeli melting pot endeavours, it has been hugely successful in bringing together established and emerging musicians. As a cultural endeavour, it has achieved remarkable excellence in one of the most significant — and fiercely competitive — areas of the arts: classical music.

Beyond all this … Remembrance Acclaimed cellist Zvi Plesser joins the Israel Camerata Jerusalem Orchestra as soloist in Dvořák’s impassioned concerto, one of the most magnificent in the repertoire: rhapsodic, elegiac and heroic. Ukrainian/Israel composer Mark Kopytman was inspired by Jewish sacred and folk traditions, crafting works of intricately melodic beauty. Beyond all this… is a major work from an important voice in Israeli classical music. In the words of the composer, it is “a mixture of reflections of the feelings, thoughts and dreams about the people and the country to which I belong.” In a similarly optimistic vein, Haydn’s Symphony No.85 is a joyous outpouring of joie de vivre, embraced as much by audiences today as it was in Paris in 1787. This virtuoso showcase for a chamber orchestra was apparently Marie Antoinette’s favourite.

Bartók looks back to the Classical period coloured with his modernist vision in Divertimento. The thrilling, Baroque-meets-folk masterpiece for string orchestra was his valedictory message to the old world — the last piece he wrote before fleeing Europe for America. Grace and melody characterise Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C, especially in the aria-like slow movement, a solemn operatic scene for Zvi Plesser’s cello — a clockstopping respite from the cares of the world before Plesser continues as soloist in Mark Kopytman’s Kaddish. Written in memory of the composer’s father, the great prayer of remembrance is evoked in a lyrical flow that ranges from intense soliloquies to dances and melancholic reminiscence. Schubert’s Fifth Symphony has an almost Mozartean grace, a touching tribute from one Viennese master to another.

Mostly Mozart: Mozart’s Violin Mozart’s practical involvement with the violin began at an early age with his skill and understanding of the instrument culminating in a set of five beautiful and melodic concertos for the instrument written in the mid-1770s. Mozart modeled his fourth concerto on a work in the same key written 10 years previously by Italian composer Luigi Boccherini, which also features in this program, but with those inimitable Mozart differences that separate him from others including grace, good humour, warmth and serenity. String writing contemporaries such as Italian Classical era composer and cellist Boccherini, violinist Giovanni Gregori and the virtuoso himself Vivaldi, all contribute music to this celebration of string writing.

SALON: SOLO

Pleasure Garden In Pleasure Garden, music and environmental sounds weave through the poetic, intimate listening space of the Salon. Elegant audio design transforms the Salon into a place of musical play, of repose and delight. It becomes a listening garden. Inspired by the story and music of the 17th-century musician, composer, improviser and nobleman Jacob Van Eyck, Pleasure Garden combines excerpts from his work, set within newly-composed music by Genevieve Lacey and Jan Bang, in collaboration with Jim Atkins. You're invited into an imagined garden, where delicate, contemplative sounds nourish your imagination and gently fill your senses.

Intimate Beethoven

TIMO-VEIKKO VALVE

Australian Chamber Orchestra is at its most intimate with two haunting treasures from the giants of music, Mozart and Beethoven, on a journey from meditation to elation. A particular favourite of both Tchaikovsky and Einstein, Mozart’s String Quintet in G minor is filled with extraordinary moments and dramatic emotions, moving from foreboding to sorrow and from tenderness to wistful resignation. Beethoven’s String Quartet in A minor is a key reason that spiritual metaphors are often used when discussing the composer’s later quartets. It brims with profundity and intensity, prompting T.S. Eliot to write of its remarkable capacity to evoke the transcendence of human suffering and bear the ‘fruit of reconciliation and relief.’

LOCAL HEROES 2016

TIMOTHY YOUNG & ROGER BENEDICT

Voices in the Wilderness Contemporaries Hans Gal and Ernst Krenek were revered composers in 1920s Vienna. Fleeing the Nazis as war broke out, they struggled to find the same success in exile; Gal in Scotland, Krenek in California. Becoming highly influential in their new countries — Krenek as a teacher of generations of American composers, Gal as a writer and administrator, founding the Edinburgh International Festival and editing the first complete edition of Brahms' works — both continued to compose prolifically — and at last their music, described as soulful, troubled, truly optimistic and romantic is being rediscovered anew. Well-known to Melbourne audiences, acclaimed pianist Timothy Young (Ensemble Liaison) joins renowned violist and conductor Roger Benedict (Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Concert for Life) in this concert of intimate works from their recent Melba recording Voices in the Wilderness, alongside two of Brahms' best-loved works for viola and piano. Commissioned by Chris Arnold and Margot Costanzo to commemorate their 60th birthdays, Elena Kats-Chernin’s The Offering is her first piano quintet and latest chamber work to hit the stage. Kats-Chernin and Flinders Quartet have formed a strong bond through their music-making since 2005. Kats-Chernin says of Shostakovich: ‘His Preludes and Fugues are a constant on my piano at home’. And Greenbaum writes of Brahms: ‘I continue to be mesmerised by the harmonic progressions of Brahms.’ This exploration of the string quartet lineage epitomises Flinders Quartet's journey in 2016, celebrating the addition of two new works to the string quartet canon.
