WOMINJEKA, WELCOME Welcome to your 2017 guide to concerts at Melbourne’s home of music, Melbourne Recital Centre. This is a place for everyone who loves music, whether you want an adventure, a moment of calm or simply to rock out.
Look through these pages to discover a diverse line-up of performers from around the globe. In April alone you can hear the whimsical folk-pop of Andrew Bird, legendary rabble-rousers Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, and ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro. April also sees the soulful artistry of two generations of storytellers, brilliant young British singer Laura Mvula and two-time Grammy-winner Ricki Lee Jones. The intimacy of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is a transporting experience for musicians and audiences, resulting in electrifying performances. Continue your explorations with the Centre’s new programming stream, evocatively titled A Thousand Sounds, where you can experience new, unusual and magical sonorities. Melbourne’s vibrant music scene — classical, jazz and the genre-defying — is at home in our Salon, with weekly performances by Australia’s finest ensembles and Local Heroes, priced so that it can be a regular treat. Our inaugural artists-in-residence, pianist Paul Grabowsky and writer Chloe Hooper, will explore and connect musical and literary worlds. Paul starts his residency with a cross-century conversation with another innovative keyboard player, J.S. Bach. The Centre presents acclaimed international ensembles, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (April) and L’Arpeggiata (March), and a roster of Great Performers, including celebrated Australian soprano Emma Matthews (April). As a cellist myself, I’m especially looking forward to Pieter Wispelwey’s exploration of the complete cello works of Beethoven, Bach and Brahms — sublime music played by a musician of immense
skill and depth (August). We also present two exciting string quartets, the Debussy Quartet (September) from France and Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar String Quartet (May). Whether you’re new to classical music or a regular concert-goer, you will find their concerts unforgettable. Early in 2017 we’re engaging with diverse musical cultures as part of the inaugural Asia TOPA Festival. A particular highlight is a joyous and moving insight into the lives of young Indian musicians in The Manganiyar Classroom (March). Chamber Made Opera creates a Chengdu teahouse in the Salon for their immersive meditation on a meeting of cultures (March). For the first time we’re also part of Yirramboi, the City of Melbourne’s festival of First Nations arts (May). Thank you to the musicians from near and far whose passion and skill illuminates Melbourne Recital Centre. Thanks also to Creative Victoria, and our sponsors and donors who make the Centre’s diverse and fascinating program a reality, and who make the Centre accessible to more Victorians. A celebrated young concert pianist once told us that he loved performing here because ‘Melbourne Recital Centre is a place where anything can happen’. We believe that there should be no limits on imagination for artists and audiences. At Melbourne Recital Centre, you can be closer to the music, and closer to inspiration, than anywhere else. We look forward to welcoming you in 2017.

ABOUT MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE Melbourne Recital Centre is a venue of and for the 21st century: celebrating the past, welcoming the present and imagining the future, a place where artists and audiences are invited to engage, challenge and explore.
With a unique focus on music, the Centre presents and hosts hundreds of concerts each year, representing the pinnacle of the art form as practised by Australian and international performers in a dazzlingly diverse array of styles, from early music to post-rock. The Centre’s learning and access activities beyond the Centre provide opportunities for Victorians of all ages and backgrounds to experience outstanding performances. Since 2009 the Centre has been home to a vibrant community of Victorian and national chamber music ensembles, and is a venue for acclaimed companies such as the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Australian National Academy of Music, Australian String Quartet, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Musica Viva and Victorian Opera. Music is central to all our lives. Visit us at Melbourne Recital Centre and experience one of the finest live music venues in the world, a place we can be proud to call our own — a Victorian venue with a global outlook.
THE PERFORMANCE SPACES Melbourne Recital Centre comprises two strikingly beautiful spaces, carefully crafted to present the best music the world has to offer and bring musicians and music-lovers closer. Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is lined with striking plywood panels of Australian plantation Hoop Pine timber, designed to resemble the back of a beautiful instrument and provide greater acoustic intimacy across the 1000-seat auditorium. The platform acoustics enrich the strength, clarity and blending of instruments as well as the communication between ensemble players on stage. The superbly organic acoustics of the Hall extend to the Salon, a uniquely intimate 150-seat performance and event space. Melbourne composer Percy Grainger’s 1937 graphic score, Free Music No.2 is inscribed across the surface to inspire players and audiences alike. We acknowledge the people of the Kulin nation on whose land Melbourne Recital Centre stands — we pay our respects to Melbourne’s First People, to their ancestors past and present, and to our shared future.

TINALLEY STRING QUARTET
Over the last two decades, Seraphim Trio, Helen Ayres (violin), Anna Goldsworthy (piano) and Tim Nankervis (cello), has remained steadfastly committed to chamber music — from building the contemporary repertoire, to developing new audiences and teaching the next generation of performers. TSQ has performed throughout Australia, Europe, Canada and the United States, appeared at the nation’s premier music festivals, and in 2017/18, will be ‘Quartet in Residence’ at the Coriole Music Festival in the McLaren Vale, South Australia. DEBUSSY STRING QUARTET A string quartet is more than an ensemble, it’s a family. Few are as tightly-knit as the Debussy Quartet, four musicians who have decided to go their own way together. Since 1990, the Quartet has forged a sound and a style that sets them apart in a world of blandly efficient international quartets. Organic and adventurous, the Debussys have collaborated with Australia’s acclaimed Circa physical theatre troupe and with contemporary dancers. Their more traditional concerts and recordings are renowned for their passion, elegance and detail, as exemplified in the three classic quartets they’ll perform. Shostakovich’s brief, grief-stricken Quartet No.7 and Beethoven’s dark, disturbed ‘Serioso’ are like eavesdropping on the composer’s innermost thoughts. Shostakovich’s cryptic 11th quartet is a study in obsession and fragmentation – its seven movements are glimpses of a dark world. The Debussy Quartet excels at these intimate, intense conversations. Ravel’s sweepingly melodious and magical quartet is one of the Debussy Quartet’s most beloved works, and their performances of this masterpiece are legendary.
‘ As for the Debussy Quartet, their feat can hardly be overstated ... Shostakovich would have been thrilled to every second.’ THE GUARDIAN (U.K.)

A product of the internationally renowned El Sistema (The System) program, the Simón Bolívar String Quartet is storming the bastions of classical music with their virtuosic and startlingly fresh readings of iconic quartets and rarities. Each player brings a strong personality and individual musical character to the group, together combining to create a thrilling and multi-faceted ensemble with a unique flair. The young quartet is comprised of the section leaders in Venezuela’s famed Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, the centrepiece of El Sistema’s remarkable array of hundreds of youth orchestras and chamber music ensembles which have changed the lives of poor children across the country. By creating a community united by a love of music, and building children’s self-esteem, El Sistema nurtures people with resilience, capability, confidence and passion. As Alejandro Carreno, the quartet’s First Violin says, ‘Music is made with passion, love and all your heart. Music is music, and art is art. For us, it’s not separated’. This vibrant ensemble makes its Melbourne debut with iconoclastic readings of the Classical wit of Haydn’s Op.33 and Beethoven’s profoundly playful second ‘Razumovsky’ quartet, a telling contrast to the bleak, war-torn landscape of Shostakovich’s chilling String Quartet No.8 Join the Simón Bolívar String Quartet to discover a new way to hear the classics in the hands of four brilliant young musicians. For more string quartets by Beethoven and Shostakovich, don’t miss the Debussy String Quartet on page 25.

ALEXANDER GAVRYLYUK ‘ Alexander Gavrylyuk is one of the greatest discoveries of the past decade, every time he enchants the public with his incredible virtuosity and thought-provoking playing.’ DE TELEGRAAF Following his huge success in the Great Performers series in 2016, dazzling piano virtuoso Alexander Gavrylyuk returns in November for one performance only. Alexander Gavrylyuk is a virtuoso in the grand manner of a Horowitz, Richter or Rubinstein – a barnstorming, red-blooded Romantic. He started learning piano at seven, moved from the Ukraine to Sydney aged 13, and commenced his prize-winning career aged 15. The young master has effortlessly transitioned from prodigy to busy international soloist while still in his early 30s. Highlights of Gavrylyuk’s extraordinary career have included concertos with the Concertgebouw, the New York, Israel, and Moscow Philharmonic and Cincinnati Symphony orchestras, headlining at the Hollywood Bowl, and recitals in Budapest, London, Vienna, Moscow and Tokyo. With these career peaks scaled already, imagine what he’ll do in the next 15 years? What’s not in question is that Gavrylyuk is already one of the most talked about musicians of his generation.

48 WAYS OF LOOKING AT BACH In 1722, Johann Sebastian Bach set out to explore a new way of thinking about sound. His explorations led to an astonishing achievement, The Well-Tempered Clavier – two books of 24 Preludes and Fugues, in all major and minor keys, 48 works in total, each unique. In 2017 we’ve invited some of Australia’s most accomplished, creative and adventurous keyboard players to take us on a journey through ‘the 48’, bringing their own insights and reflections to this music, as well as matching it with music that they feel illuminate and enhance these masterworks. This is a unique project across six concerts throughout 2017, celebrating the genius of J.S. Bach. Each concert will be followed by a short Q&A with the artists, allowing us all to reflect on the music of the greatest of all Baroque composers.

Peter de Jager has made a name for himself as a performer of unusual, virtuosic and contemporary repertoire. But, like all musicians, he reserves a special place in his soul for Bach. This mediation on Bach will take us on an undefined path through rich musical terrain.
Paul Grabowsky is joined by Genevieve Lacey, Eugene Ughetti and Erkki Veltheim in some reflections and meanderings on the first set of the 48. This program is the first of many in Paul Grabowsky’s time with us as inaugural Artist in Residence at Melbourne Recital Centre. T UESDAY 13 J UNE 6PM

BAROQUE
ENSEMBLE L’ARPEGGIATA CHRISTINA PLUHAR, DIRECTOR/THEORBO Performing on instruments of the period. Christina Pluhar and her ensemble of brilliant musicians recognise no boundaries, blurring the lines between the score and improvisation, classical and folk, and between old and new. L’Arpeggiata performs the Baroque canon with a light touch – lithe readings of Monteverdi or Cavalli – but it is the evenings of ingeniously curated explorations that showcase the ensemble’s gift for joyous, spontaneous music-making. An exponent of the gorgeous bass lute called a ‘theorbo’, Pluhar founded L’Arpeggiata in 2000, creating a flexible group with an immediately distinctive sonority, a beguiling assortment of bass instruments, strings, the mellow trumpet-like cornetto and voice. It’s a combination that permits excursions to South America, Mexico, the Mediterranean and jazz, in addition to the familiar sound-world of Baroque Europe. In this Melbourne Recital Centre exclusive, L’Arpeggiata pays homage to Henry Purcell, the most important English composer of the Baroque. Vivid and dramatic, serene and sacred, rollicking and bawdy, his music is the sound of the Restoration: a meltingpot of French, Italian and German influences with a uniquely English accent. It’s the kind of cosmopolitan music that inspires L’Arpeggiata, here joined by two renowned singers who capture the theatrical essence of Purcell’s art.

BACH – THE PASSIONS OF THE SOUL Bach – the Passions of the Soul opens a window into the unique and brilliant world of J.S. Between 8 & 9
Highlighting the Manganiyar musical traditions of Rajasthan, The Manganiyar Classroom by Roysten Abel features a theatrically inspired staging where 35 boys aged 8 to 16, all inheritors of threatened musical traditions, battle hilariously with the rigid conformity demanded of the classroom but where a joyous and exuberant musical celebration triumphs. It is also director Roysten Abel’s way of providing a future for these young artists; the project directly funds a school for Manganiyar children.
A convening of voices, electronics, instruments and audience. Seated around eight tables with ‘dinner-table turntables’ or ‘Lazy Susans’, the audience is implicated in a protocol of encounters. What unfolds is a negotiation of the unexpected terrain that can lie between our personal, public and professional selves. Between 8 and 9 has evolved from a thematic exploration of teahouse culture and notions of sanctuary into a reflexive meditation on the meeting of cultures, generations, languages and artistic practices.

CHLOE HOOPER, WRITER
PAUL GRABOWSKY, PIANO
ARTISTS-INRESIDENCE We’re delighted to welcome two outstanding creative Australians to be our inaugural Artists-in-Residence in 2017. We’ve asked pianist Paul Grabowsky and writer Chloe Hooper to be our Artists-in-Residence because each of them displays a keen curiosity about not only their chosen craft, but also how they can expand and change the way we think about words and music. They are both great storytellers, and have displayed a great knack for observing people and their responses to performance. These residencies offer an extended opportunity for them to engage with the Centre, and for you, our audience, to engage with them as they unearth and amplify the marvellous events presented here in 2017.
Paul Grabowsky AO is one of Australia’s great musicians, excelling as a pianist, composer, artistic director, broadcaster, educator, commentator and mentor. His passionate interest in improvised music, and in working with a wide range of indigenous musicians, identifies him as a model musician for the twenty-first century – seeing music at the heart of a great nation’s identity. His residency explores a range of these interests, and more. Acclaimed author Chloe Hooper is our inaugural Writer-in-Residence. Her first novel, A Child’s Book of True Crime (2002), was short-listed for the Orange Prize for Literature and was a New York Times Notable Book. In residence throughout the year, Chloe will be focussing on the Great Performers series, observing and interacting and responding to audiences and artists as they share the experience of live music. Subscribe to our eNews for details of these residencies.
