WOMINJEK A , WELCOME Over the next three months you can immerse yourself in music that will move and inspire you as the Centre is taken over by a veritable festival of blues, rock and soul artists in April. Grammy-winner Ricky Lee Jones (7 April) revisits her highlights from an incredible three-decade career. Funk collective Snarky Puppy (8 April) and ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro (10 April) present two very different ways to jam but both will have you on your feet. The smooth baritone of Gregory Porter (11 April) and U.K. singer-songwriter Laura Mvula’s electro-gospel-pop (13 April) represent the future of soul, while Booker T. and the Stax Revue showcase its heritage, direct from Memphis. Billy Bragg and Joe Henry (22 & 23 April) ride the rails, recreating the authentic voice of American blues and folk on a cross-country journey. Andrew Bird (18 April) is the model of a modern folk musician, fiddling, whistling and crooning his way into your heart. May sees the return of our annual collaboration with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolis New Music Festival. The Festival explores the magical sonorities of ‘old’ instruments — recorders, lutes, harpsichords — in the surprising context of ‘new’ music. You’ll hear the brilliant Joseph Tawadros premiere his oud concerto and harpsichord virtuoso Mahan Esfahani plays a brand new concerto by beloved Australian composer Elena Kats Chernin, both with the MSO. Chamber performances by some of Australia’s most accomplished exponents of period instruments create beguiling sounds in the Salon, and Jessica Aszodi and Jane Sheldon demonstrate the possibilities of the oldest instrument of all — the voice. Our season of festivals concludes with some of the most celebrated names in jazz — Bill Frisell, Carla Bley, Vince Jones and Kenny Barron — as the Melbourne International Jazz Festival ignites Elisabeth Murdoch Hall from 2—11 June. The intimacy and the sensational sound of the Hall is perfect for jazz, giving you an up-close and personal evening with these stars. From the legendary Kenny Barron’s elegant pianism to guitarist Bill Frisell’s take on cinematic classics, there’s something for every music-lover. You’ll find many more experiences to move and transport you: the Academy of St Martin in the Fields with violinist Joshua Bell (19 & 20 April), the dazzling young Simón Bolívar String Quartet (15 May) and Yirramboi, a festival of first nations arts (10 May) and weekly performances by our Local Heroes chamber ensembles. I warmly invite you to visit Melbourne Recital Centre soon.

Between 8 & 9 (Chengdu Teahouse Project) A convening of voices, electronics, instruments and audience.

A meeting is called to order. Seated around eight tables, with 'dinner-table turntables' or 'Lazy Susans' the audience is implicated in a protocol of encounters. What unfolds is a negotiation of the unexpected terrain that can lie between our personal, public and professional selves. Between 8 & 9 has evolved from a thematic exploration of teahouse culture and notions of sanctuary into a reflexive meditation on the meeting of cultures, generations, languages and artistic practices. The essence of this exists in the space between 8 (referring to notions of prosperity) and 9 (referring to notions of spirituality). From the provocative to the playful, expect this meeting to be 'hot and lively'. INFORMATION Wed 29 to Fri 31 March 7pm Sat 1 April 4pm & 7pm Salon (70-mins no interval) Chamber Made Opera

Mike Nock with Julien Wilson & Stephen Magnusson

MIKE NOCK

Two-time Grammy-winner Rickie Lee Jones exploded onto the pop scene in 1978 and has made a career of fearlessly experimenting with her sound and persona over 15 criticallyacclaimed albums. Rolling Stone magazine put her on its cover twice in two years. A cultural phenomenon, Rickie is a character in both her lyrics and performances, defying convention with her sometimes brazen sexuality and her one-of-a-kind mixture of jazz, rock and what has come to be known as ‘confessional’ songwriter performances. Her first album Rickie Lee Jones, released in 1979, won the Grammy for ‘Best New Artist’ and she was hailed as a ‘highly touted new pop-jazz-singer-songwriter’ and ‘one of the best — if not the best — artist of her generation.’ In addition to the album’s brilliant songs — including the exceptional ‘On Saturday Afternoons in 1963’ and the haunting ‘Last Chance Texaco’, the popular ‘Chuck E’s in Love’ became a signature anthem for a generation of young women and men who found her a model for the new generation of hipster. Jones experienced most of her commercial success at the outset of her career, but a restless creative spirit — combined with a stubborn refusal to fit comfortably into any one musical niche — sealed her ultimate destiny as that of a highly regarded cult heroine. Rickie Lee Jones performs in the intimate surrounds of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall with a stroll through a musical heritage that spans three decades of original storytelling.

Snarky Puppy Two-time Grammy Award-winning Snarky Puppy has gone from the best kept secret to one of the most respected names in instrumental music. It seamlessly fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that reaches both the most critical and most carefree audience. Led by bassist-guitarist-composer-arranger Michael League, with every new project and every show, Snarky Puppy hopes to do something it has never done before. The convergence of musicians has performed regularly with artists like Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kirk Franklin, Justin Timberlake, Roy Hargrove and Marcus Miller among others. With its latest album, Family Dinner, Volume 2, the eclectic, unclassifiable jazz-funk-global collective has set their sights higher than ever. ‘We had a wish-list of artists we wanted to collaborate with, from a really wide array of styles,’ says League. ‘We tried to come up with different demographics, nationalities, even age groups. And then we wanted to write arrangements that the band would really shine on, but would also truly enhance the essence of each artist.’ The result is a free-wheeling, wide-ranging collection, recorded live in New Orleans, featuring an astonishing list of musicians from around the world, including Susana Baca, Charlie Hunter, Salif Keita, Laura Mvula, David Crosby and an all-star group of Big Easy players including Ivan Neville and Terence Blanchard. Various combinations of the three-dozen members of Snarky Puppy (known as ‘The Fam’) act as the house band for an unprecedented journey through different sounds, genres and cultures.

European Masters of the 20th Century Formed from musicians of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, The Melbourne Ensemble performs chamber music incorporating winds and strings. European Masters of the 20th Century explores three works by three giants of the 20th century: Stravinsky, Poulenc and Hindemith. Stravinsky’s remarkable Septet gives a glimpse into the mind of the ever changing style of the composer of The Rite of Spring. Paul Hindemith’s Octet, ultimately his last chamber composition, is a tour de force of Hindemith’s unique acerbic style. Between these two monumental works the Sonata for clarinet and bassoon by the young Francis Poulenc is full of wit, mischief and is utterly charming. Gregory Porter

An artist whose music is at once timeless yet utterly of its time, Gregory Porter has confirmed his standing as his generation’s most soulful jazz singer-songwriter. The Grammy-winning jazz, soul and gospel singer celebrates the release of his newest album Take Me to the Alley, the much-anticipated follow-up to his sensational 2013 release Liquid Spirit, and brings to Melbourne his smooth baritone voice and a concert of mesmerising and uplifting bluesy jazz and vintage soul renditions. The charismatic Californian breathes life, vitality, fun and excitement into the musical genres he has loved from childhood. After injury derailed his sports career while still a student, he began performing in local jazz clubs, which is where he met saxophonist, composer and pianist Kamau Kenyatta. Kenyatta became Porter’s mentor, introducing him to other like-minded artists subsequently landing a lead role in a new Broadway musical It Ain’t Nothing But the Blues. The gates were open for Porter; his debut album, Water, appeared in 2010, and was followed by a second, Be Good. Grammy nominations and awards, platinum album sales and TV appearances followed. The giant American with the deep, rich voice can croon like Nat King Cole, soar like Marvin Gaye or rage like Gil Scott-Heron. Wielding one of the most captivating baritone voices in music today, Porter emits enormous soul that conveys both the emotions and intellect of any given song without relying on vocal histrionics. Experience in concert Porter’s amazing gift for writing poignant songs full of emotional immediacy and hooky melodies in an unforgettable performance by an artist at the peak of his game.

Emma Matthews Emma Matthews is one of Australia’s most beloved performers, a star of the operatic stage and the concert hall. Her versatility, charisma and exquisite coloratura soprano voice have made her not only an ideal Mozart heroine or Handel queen but also the perfect vamp in Berg’s gritty Lulu. Matthews has created roles in major new Australian operas and has explored fascinating repertoire old and new, but it is perhaps as an exponent of the art of bel canto that she is most renowned. It’s no surprise that she’s often compared to Joan Sutherland. This demanding vocal style exults in the agility and beauty of the voice to thrilling dramatic effect, as Matthews will demonstrate when she performs arias by Bellini, Donizetti and Thomas in a rare solo recital with one of the U.K.’s most accomplished repetiteurs, Richard Hetherington. Schubert and Mozart were also devotees of the voice, gifting sopranos with some of the finest examples of melody at its most pure. Schubert’s lieder combine story and song — think of Gretchen musing at her spinning wheel — while Mozart’s arias are musical expressions of character par excellence. Finally, Matthews celebrates the pleasures of operetta and popular song by Lehár, Bernstein, Victor Herbert and Flanders and Swann — a glittering end to an evening with one of opera’s brightest stars.

L AU R A MVULA ‘HER SOULFUL VOCALS AND FLORID SOUNDSCAPES HAVE HELPED THIS 26-YEAR-OLD INVENT A NEW MUSICAL GENRE — GOSPELDELIA.’ THE GUARDIAN (U.K.)

One of the most exciting musical talents to come out of the U.K., the award-winning singer-songwriter Laura Mvula is heading to Melbourne to win our hearts. The classicallytrained vocalist has been compared to the likes of Nina Simone and will no doubt own the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage. Known for her inventive, atmospheric mix of R&B, jazz, classical and pop, Laura Mvula grew up in Birmingham and used to sing in her aunt’s a cappella group Black Voices. In 2008, she formed a group called Judyshouse which she fronted and wrote songs for. Laura first broke through in 2013 with a full-length debut album, Sing to the Moon, and a fully-formed sound that bridged eras and genres with the aid of bright, elastic pop production. Ping-ponging from springy dance-pop anthems to sullenly introspective ballads, Mvula set the bar extremely high for the career to come. Her debut album earned her a swag of prestigious award nominations and wins and her sophomore album The Dreaming Room was nominated for a 2016 Mercury Prize for ‘Album of the Year’. Laura’s music encompasses the kind of big, brassy movie soundtrack music popular in the ’50s and ’60s, the radiant, soul-inflected pop balladry akin to British singers like Estelle and Emeli Sandé, and bright choral harmonies inspired by her experience performing in gospel choirs. It’s an intoxicating sound that one can’t easily categorise yet makes everything she does so engaging and original.

This year for their performance of Bach’s St John Passion, the choir is joined by Andrew Goodwin (Evangelist) and Warwick Fyfe (Jesus), soprano Lorina Gore, mezzo-soprano Dominica Matthews, tenor Henry Choo and bass-baritone Jeremy Kleeman completing a stellar group of Australian soloists. From the darkly evocative orchestral opening, Bach creates a narrative more compelling than that of any opera of the period. Sung in German, this extraordinary musical journey is the perfect reflection for Good Friday. INFORMATION Fri 14 April 3pm Elisabeth Murdoch Hall (Two hours & 30-mins incl. interval) J.S. Winding together his trademark violin technique with xylophone, vocals and sophisticated electronic looping and his uncanny ability to whistle anything, Andrew Bird is a riveting one-man orchestra. A classically-trained musician, Bird began playing the violin at age four, learning Bach and Mozart by ear as if they were folk tunes. Initially coming onto the scene with zany swing band the Squirrel Nut Zippers before forming Bowl of Fire, Bird’s sound began to evolve in an indie-folk direction after he went solo. But indie-folk — or any single genre — is just a backbone for a swirl of loops, samples and gorgeously rich instrumentation underpinning lyrics of mysterious import. It’s a sound that unites a broad swathe of music-lovers from the folk, blues, classical and pop worlds in adoration. With the new album, Are You Serious, Bird attains a level of expression that’s a

personal, evolutionary leap. ‘Here I am with my most unguarded, direct, relatable album to date,’ Bird says, ‘Go easy on me.’ Are You Serious is an album of sweet, layered songs of love and chemistry. Hear the skilled lyricist and virtuoso whistler perform a mysterious and wondrous concert of new and familiar material — a rare chance to hear where Bird has come from and where he’s going. The principal performers of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields are an acclaimed ensemble within an ensemble: the Academy Chamber Ensemble, established in 1967 to explore masterpieces of chamber music for strings and winds. In the Ensemble’s exclusive Australian performance you’ll hear Strauss’s rollicking tone poem Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks in miniature form when arranger Franz Hasenöhrl’s ‘frolic’ shrinks a huge orchestra down to five players — keeping that cheeky French horn, of course. Mendelssohn’s remarkable String Octet with its fine melodies and the gracious balance of its various parts proves Mendelssohn as a pioneer in producing a masterful work for the combination of two string quartets and the perfect centrepiece for a morning with the Academy.

Booker T. presents The Stax Revue Booker T. Jones is one of the fathers of modern soul music, whose name is synonymous with the sound of a Hammond B-3 organ and the legendary Memphis recording studio, Stax Records. Stax produced artists Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Rufus and Carla, Sam and Dave, and many more, all supported by the talented house band Booker T. and the MGs. BILLY BR AGG & JOE HENRY

— Shine a Light

BILLY BRAGG & JOE HENRY

English singer-songwriter Billy Bragg and American singer-songwriter Joe Henry have between them recorded over 25 albums, won countless accolades, garnered rave reviews for their live performances and written some of the most original thought provoking songs of our times. Billy has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 30 years having collaborated with Wilco, Natalie Merchant and more recently Joe Henry himself. Henry is known for pushing the envelope with his intimate, richly detailed songs that he has shaped by his eclectic musical worldview. Together the two have united to record a new album which they are bringing to Melbourne along with favourites from their past.

Songs of Peggy Lee — Janet Seidel Trio

In March 2016 Billy and Joe, guitars in hand, boarded a Los Angeles-bound train in Chicago with the hope of reconnecting with the culture of American railroad travel and the songs it inspired. Winding along 2728 miles of track, the pair recorded songs while the train paused to pick up passengers in waiting rooms and track side. They hurriedly set up their recording equipment, performing classic railroad songs while keeping one eye on the train, bounding back aboard just before pulling out for the next town. After four days crossing the country, they pulled into L.A. at 4.30am, recording their final song in Union Station at dawn, just as the first birds began to sing. The resulting album Shine a Light: Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad takes listeners along on that journey.

Hear these two greats perform songs from the journey, along with favourites from their own back catalogues in an evening that crosses countries, boundaries, genres and ideas.

The Janet Seidel Trio and veteran British drummer Cyril Bevan unite to perform a selection of songs from Janet’s album 'Don't Smoke in Bed: Songs in the key of Peggy Lee'. The CD was produced some years ago featuring jazz legend Don Burrows, and led to the live show being performed by the Trio plus guest artist format all over Australia. Recent versions of the show have had sold out houses at Gold Coast Arts Centre and in London's famous Ronnie SCOTT's Jazz Club in Soho, with Cyril Bevan on drums. Janet's Trio has achieved several international recording successes, with widespread acclaim for their many CDs, live performances on radio and in venues around the world, ranging from concert halls to jazz clubs and major festivals. Janet Seidel's voice has been ranked by critics with those of Peggy Lee, Doris Day, Julie London and Blossom Dearie, and has earned her the title 'Australia's First Lady of Jazz', in the U.K. (Penguin Guide to Jazz). Seven Sonatas — Stephen McIntyre

Another State of Being Internationally acclaimed for its ‘addictive sound’, ‘intuitive’ music making and ‘technical virtuosity’, Tinalley String Quartet (TSQ) is one of Australia’s most awarded classical music exports and is celebrated as one of the finest strings quartets of its generation. Inspired by the words of Leo Tolstoy, Another State of Being features masterpieces of two Czech composers, Antonín Dvořák’s beloved ‘American’ Quartet and Leoš Janáček’s ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata. The ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata was written in response to Leo Tolstoy’s provocative novella of the same name. Tolstoy’s writing in turn was inspired by Beethoven’s ‘Kreutzer’ sonata for violin and piano, and is a vivid portrayal of jealousy, obsession and violence. The concert concludes with Dvořák’s ‘American’ Quartet, written whilst the composer was holidaying in the small American village of Spillville, a favourite with Czech travellers. Surrounded by his fellow countrymen and speaking his native tongue once more — the music poured forth for the composer. INFORMATION

Acclaimed and much loved pianist Stephen McIntyre performs music from three different centuries all written for the piano by composers who were themselves great keyboard players. Utilising the male voice and its timbral, gestural and dynamic ranges and conventional and extended vocal techniques, Kyle generates material to support these explorations. The idea is to question the stereotype and throw open the possibilities that are uniquely available to the male voice.

GREAT PERFORMERS 2017

GERNOT WOLFGANG Reflections PLEXUS Liane Keegan contralto Tickets $39 ($29 concession) Three concert season ticket $99 ($72 conc) Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre & PLEXUS Each time Nikolai Demidenko performs at Melbourne Recital Centre he presents a different facet of his artistry and this year he contrasts the sparking gems of Scarlatti with the mysterious depths of Schubert. It’s a measure of Demidenko’s versatility that he can move effortlessly from Baroque Spain to Romantic Vienna over the course of a single evening, taking us from the birth of the piano sonata to its powerful maturity. Schubert’s late sonatas are some of his most confessional and tragic utterances. Almost painfully intimate, they are conversations between composer and performer, and we’re merely eavesdropping. At the heart of the turbulent C minor Sonata is an adagio of profound tenderness, illuminated by what Gramophone magazine calls Demidenko’s ‘impeccable balance of strength and gentleness’. Scarlatti bequeathed pianists hundreds of exquisite miniature showpieces in his sonatas, a true embarrassment of riches. Some are exercises in pure jeu d’esprit: sunny evocations of the guitars of his adopted home, Spain, or dazzling chases across the keyboard. Others plumb emotions that few Baroque works can match, all the more poignant and intense for their brevity. All call for the kind of discreet virtuosity that Nikolai Demidenko has perfected.

Subtle Persuasion

Unique in the musical landscape of Australia, Songmakers Australia brings together some of the country’s leading singers and instrumentalists in a diverse repertoire comprising some of the pinnacles of chamber music. The characters, stories and lessons of Greek mythology have shaped art and literature for thousands of years. They speak of timeless elements inherent to human nature: love, death, deception, fear of the unknown. Hear the call of the sirens in a new song cycle by Roger Heagney and let the fascinating world of legends unfold its magic for you through songs by Schubert, Wolf and Brahms.

The award-winning contemporary music group Syzygy Ensemble have, in their short time together, made an impressive impact. They have quickly gained a reputation as one of Australia’s finest new music ensembles, lauded for their virtuoso precision, innovative programming and ability to connect viscerally with their audiences. Subtle Persuasion is a sonic exploration in beauty and restraint. Melbourne composer Andrew Aronowicz evokes otherworldly veiled sounds in Gossamer, Liza Lim concocts a love potion for solo violin and Tristan Murail meticulously weaves microtonal sounds and exotic colours to create a miniaturised orchestra that functions like clockwork. Be enchanted and inspired by the progressive palettes of these innovative artists delivered by Syzygy Ensemble.

Tony Gould Duo: Dialogues on the Art of Creative Music 2

My Friend The Chocolate Cake: ‘The Revival Meeting' Album Launch

Tony Gould Duo: Dialogues on the Art of Creative Music brings together several sublimely talented Melbourne musical colleagues with whom Tony reminisces through some subtle jazz standards and nostalgic folk songs. Piano and guitar improvisation come together lyrically in this close impromptu performance when Tony is joined by leading jazz guitarist Peter Petrucci.

The songwriting genius of David Bridie combined with the glorious strings of Helen Mountfort’s cello and Hope Csutoros’ violin are high in the curious collision of elements that have made My Friend The Chocolate Cake a must-see concert draw, triple ARIA winners and a vivid presence on countless film and TV soundtracks these last two and a half decades. Their seven-album history is a multi-dimensional mural of modern Australia that illustrates its geography, its political mores and its predominantly suburban identity. Be there to witness the birth of their 8th studio album The Revival Meeting.

SANDY EVANS

KRISTIAN CHONG

Rockpool Mirror

Brahms Piano Quintet Classical Scotland

Composed and led by Sandy Evans, Rockpool Mirror brings together four of Australia’s leading contemporary improvisers in a musical response to Belinda Webster’s stunning photographs of the Shoalhaven Gorge, N.S.W. Sandy, Adrian Sherriff, Paul Grabowsky and Niko Schäuble are inventive, passionate and accomplished improvisers. This performance is a rare opportunity to experience the deep musical bonds they have established through a rich history of collaboration based around the Australian Art Orchestra.

Pianist Kristian Chong is one of Australia’s most sought-after musicians performing as concerto soloist, chamber musician and recitalist. The series Kristian Chong & Friends is an assembly of his enthusiastic friends performing together some of the great chamber duo sonatas, trios, quartets and quintets. Joining Kristian are his friends, Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Dale Barltrop, and MSO principals violinist Matthew Tomkins, violist Christopher Moore and cellist Rachael Tobin.

Evergreen Ensemble performs a majestic program of Scottish and German classical repertoire from the late 18th and 19th centuries. Be surprised and charmed by these rare string quartets which beautifully illustrate the influence teachers can have on several generations of students. Soaring Scottish airs and spirited German dances by composers such as the Earl of Kellie, Schetky and Reinagle follow in the wake of the opening Quartet in B-flat by Johann Stamitz. This year marks the 300 year anniversary of Stamitz’s birth.

THE PASSIONS OF THE SOUL

BENAUD TRIO

Village People The Benaud Trio is one of Australia’s finest chamber ensembles. Formed in Melbourne in early 2005, pianist Amir Farid, violinist Lachlan Bramble and cellist Ewen Bramble have established themselves as formidable performers of the standard repertoire, works by Australian composers and music with a pop/jazz influence. Social connections are at the heart of our humanity. Dvořák paints a vivid picture of Czech village life through his series of Bohemian folk ballads. Exuding nostalgia, listeners are tossed between furious dance episodes and beautiful lamentations of an existence that is simple yet impassioned. A century later, Carl Vine’s ‘The Village’ Piano Trio is conceived without the usual musical landmarks that normally suggest form and structure. Instead a complex network of musical interconnections describes the social webs that make up the ‘villages’ of our lives. MUSIC ON THE MIND: TALK

Genetic Basis of Singing: twins & musical ability

Intimate Mozart RICHARD TOGNETTI

Born in South Africa, raised in Australia, educated in the U.S.A. and now a resident of the U.K., pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout is one of the world’s leading performers of Mozart. Since 2009, he has been recording the complete keyboard music of Mozart. As a performer, Mozart’s own performances as a pianist stunned Viennese concertgoers and paved the way for the likes of Beethoven and the Romantics to follow. Alongside Richard Tognetti and an intimate Australian Chamber Orchestra ensemble, Kristian takes on Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.13. Mozart himself wrote that this concerto could be ‘performed with full orchestra … or merely a quattro’, which is how it will be presented here. Schumann’s String Quartet and Piano Quintet, both written in 1842 (his year of chamber music and not long after he married his beloved Clara), complete the program. Fresh, buoyant and inventive, these two magnificent works have been called ‘the most perfect of all the products of his genius.’

While music is ubiquitous to all known human cultures, individual differences in music ability have sparked intense debates regarding the relative importance of nature and nurture in shaping music ability. Singing is an ideal paradigm for investigating the genetic basis of music ability. Using an online twin study and a set of singing tasks, this Music on the Mind investigates the genetic basis of singing by disentangling the contribution of genetic and environmental influences. GREAT PERFORMERS 2017

BEHZOD ABDURAIMOV

The compelling artistry of Behzod Abduraimov has only deepened since his Melbourne Recital Centre debut in 2012. The then-22-year-old performed with impetuosity tempered intellect, revelling in his technical prowess and expressive insights. He was perhaps well aware of the weight of expectations; after his triumphant debut he was being compared to the very greatest: Horowitz, Ashkenazy, Van Cliburn. In the intervening four years, Behzod has paced his progress intelligently, delivering on his promise. As International Piano put it, he has an ‘intellectual curiosity and an artistry that can only blossom’. Now 26, he’s transitioned from prodigy to career musician while remaining a must-hear performer. Liszt’s B minor Sonata is one of the pinnacles of Romantic music, and the ultimate example of the form. Vast, symphonic in scope and formidable in its demands, it requires that balance between intellect and emotion, head and heart that only the best pianists possess. The more cut-and-dry virtuosity of Prokofiev’s Sixth Sonata is one of 20th-century music’s great thrill-rides, one that Behzod handles with well-judged aplomb. And as a counterbalance, a few moments of poetry by Schubert and a flamboyant transcription of Bach’s most famous and fantastical organ work. Radiating calm and confidence, it seems that nothing is beyond Behzod’s reach.
