WOMINJEK A , WELCOME Melbourne Recital Centre is very proud of the diversity and depth of the concerts you’ll discover in these pages. Over winter you’ll hear acclaimed musicians from the heart of Australia, from Asia, Europe and the Americas, direct from stellar international venues, or from the Melbourne community. The youngest of them may be making their stage debuts in a schools concert — an experience that could inspire a lifetime in music, or encountering opera for the first time when Opera Australia presents a families-ready version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute (6 July). The Australian Youth Orchestra’s brilliant young musicians are pursuing their art at the highest level. They perform the music of Nigel Westlake with Lior, Diana Doherty and the composer himself (10 & 11 July). We’re delighted to welcome the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir (7 August) for an exquisite multi-media event telling the story of 120 years of choral practice in remote Central Australian communities. The choir was featured in the documentary The Song Keepers which screens as part of the 2017 Melbourne International Film Festival. Don’t miss this moving and highly-acclaimed testament to the resilience of Central Australia’s Indigenous women. Lovers of the cello are in for a real treat when the masterful Pieter Wispelwey performs the cello chamber works of Beethoven, J.S. Bach and Brahms over three nights (16—18 August). Wispelwey is one of the most insightful musicians around — he reveals something new in the music every time you hear him. These are certain to be unforgettable concerts. The Debussy String Quartet has established itself as a dynamic and virtuosic ensemble that’s not afraid to take risks by, for example, playing blindfolded while members of Circa tumble around them. While there are no acrobatics on stage, there will be plenty of thrills when this great French quartet plays Shostakovich, Beethoven and the magical Ravel Quartet (16 September). And if you want more chamber music in the intimate setting of the Salon, there are dozens of concerts to choose, starring lutes and recorders, pianos, violins and accordions. Our 2017 Artist in Residence pianist/composer Paul Grabowsky returns with his super-trio, Torrio! (31 August). Paul’s residency at the Centre has yielded some fascinating music so far, and there’s much more to come. The Centre’s artistic, learning and outreach programs are supported by donors, ticket-buyers and our commercial operations. With the support of our community — you — we have been able to create a vibrant and vital place where around 200,000 people each year experience some of the world’s best music and music-making. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation. Even a small amount can make a difference. You’ll be helping the Centre to grow, nurturing Melbourne’s cultural life and local musicians, and extending the benefits of live music to people of all walks of life. Visit melbournerecital.com.au/support for more information. You are warmly welcomed to join us at a concert soon.

Melbourne Youth Orchestra continues its 50th birthday celebrations with an exhilarating program of music from new worlds. Directed by Chief Conductor Steven Hillinger, the program opens with Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla, followed by the world premiere of Song of the Open Road, a newly commissioned work by renowned Australian composer Graeme Koehne. The Orchestra will be joined by soloist and MYO alumnus Josh Rogan for William Lovelock’s dazzling Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra. Written in 1968 for Australian trumpet player John Robertson, it is a favourite with performers and audiences, and remains his most-often performed work. Dvořák’s triumphant Symphony No. 9 From the New World closes the program. Seraphim Trio, Helen Ayres (violin), Anna Goldsworthy (piano) and Tim Nankervis (cello) continues its journey through time performing gems from the history of the piano trio. SITKOVETSKY TRIO Experience the miraculous music making of the Sitkovetsky Trio. In their hands the piano trio becomes a miniature orchestra. Be moved by outpourings of love and loss from Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff, Mendelssohn’s teenage exuberance, and Skipworth’s homage to the ‘pounding wave’.
The Moderns Seraphim Trio explores the 20th-century piano trio with Peter Sculthorpe's Irkanda III and other music of the moderns, Ravel and Shostakovich. Ravel's Trio remains, even today, a wondrous modern incantation of sound and texture while Shostakovich's Trio, whether it is heard as an elegy at the loss of a friend or a whole nation in the midst of war, remains painfully relevant in our century. La Bonne Chanson features song cycles from three of the most cherished French composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Reynaldo Hahn's songs exemplify the tradition of the classic French mélodie. Fauré's La bonne chanson, one of his most spontaneous and original, explored new possibilities by developing themes across multiple songs.
Poulenc's Tel jour telle nuit was another watershed work for its composer, a cycle in which his mature voice emerges fully formed. Two ecstatic classical masterpieces by two of the greatest composers—quite simply a concert to leave you uplifted and elated. Beethoven burst onto Vienna’s orchestral scene in 1800 with his resplendent first symphony. Dramatic, witty, majestic and joyous by turns, this is Beethoven at his high-energy, optimistic best. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.17 is one of the best-loved of all works for piano and orchestra. Australian World Orchestra Chamber 8 On Tour Experience the sheer brilliance of an intimate chamber music performance from eight of Australia’s finest musicians on the international stage. The Australian World Orchestra’s Chamber 8 performs a captivating program including Beethoven’s Septet featuring Andrew Bain of the L.A. Philharmonic on horn and Dvořák’s String Quintet featuring Matthew McDonald on double bass with an ensemble of some of Australia’s greatest musicians. This is a very rare opportunity to witness music-making of the highest calibre where each of the eight musicians have the opportunity to display their individual brilliance. The unusual scoring of Beethoven’s Septet with a single clarinet, horn, bassoon and strings allows the musicians to interplay and engage in high spirited solos and duets in what’s arguably Beethoven’s finest chamber music composition. Matthew McDonald’s pizzicato double bass performance in Dvořák’s string quintet creates a platform for the interweaving melodic strands of Dvořák’s master craftsmanship. The AWO Chamber 8 on Tour is chamber music at its finest. INFORMATION

Monteverdi — Operatic Genius Ludovico's Band is one of Australia's most dynamic Baroque bands, acclaimed for its performances of music from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The combination of multiple plucked string instruments with soaring violins and a rich bowed bass creates a unique and exotic sound world. Monteverdi's name is synonymous with the genesis of what we now know as opera — the thrilling combination of text, music, drama and movement. Monteverdi was one of the first composers to write in this form, and one of the inventors of sung speech we now know as recitative. Operatic Genius presents dramatic excerpts from Poppea, L'Orfeo and Il ritorno d'Ulisse. Classical masterpieces performed by the orchestra of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and acclaimed guest artists. The Serenade K.361 (370a) has long been known by its more famous nickname, ‘Gran Partita’, a title not given by Mozart but scribbled on the manuscript by an unknown hand. Essentially meaning ‘big wind symphony’ the title is not inaccurate as the work uses a large ensemble. An impeccable musical achievement, the Serenade includes elaborate movements of symphonic proportions, irresistible dance sections, one of Mozart’s greatest Adagios, and a delectable set of six variations before reaching a rondo finale of fleet-fingered liveliness. THE SONG KEEPERS IN CONCERT The Central Australian Aboriginal Women's Choir – ARRKANALA LYILHITJIKA The Central Australian Aboriginal Women's Choir has become a musical ‘tour dé force’ since their historic and highly acclaimed concert tour of Germany in mid-2015. This unique Central Australian ensemble sings sacred music in the Western Arrarnta and Pitjantjatjara languages — two living languages of the Northern Territory and South Australia — together with new music introduced through recent collaborations with other Centralian and international choirs. Their signature performance piece Arrkanala Lyilhitjika is a narrative musical work comprising a 90-minute choral performance accompanied by a multi-arts rear projection, sometimes illuminated by lyrical narration, telling the iconic story of approximately 120 years of continuous choral practice in remote Central Australian communities. This work reveals a unique Australian musical conjunction: a coalescence of Baroque and Romantic era choral arrangements, centuries-old Sacred poetry (Hymns) locked and carried in the Western Arrarnta and Pitjantjatjara languages. Arrkanala Lyilhitjika will inform and educate, providing a rare insight into a vital but largely unknown aspect of Aboriginal culture in the Central Desert. With male musicians dominating the contemporary Indigenous performance landscape, Arrkanala Lyilhitjika is a story of the cultural resilience of women and represents an unheralded aspect of contemporary Australian Indigenous musicianship. It is a testament to the resilience of Indigenous women in the Central Desert as they preserve and strengthen their identity, languages and culture through song.

MAX RIEBL AUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET
A spirit of youthful exuberance and boundless confidence energises this concert by the Australian String Quartet. Rejuvenated by his time in America, Dvořák’s return to his native Bohemia was a joyful homecoming, inspiring a flood of musical ideas in his G major String Quartet. Arriving in America in his late 20s, Benjamin Britten enjoyed a sense of supreme confidence as a composer. In his String Quartet No.1, he sets out to impress in a work that abounds in joie de vivre and originality. In his second string quartet, Australian composer, Paul Stanhope, evokes the emotionally charged experience of the Jewish migrants who made Australia their home during World War II. The three works together compose a rich tapestry drawn from themes of exile and return, and inspirations from the old world and the new. ROSIE RIEBL

PETER WISPELWEY ‘HEARING WISPELWEY’S BACH WAS A MUSICAL EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME.’ THE AUSTRALIAN
There are a handful of musicians who inspire the adoration (not just the admiration) of audiences, critics and other musicians. Pieter Wispelwey is one of them. The Dutch cellist is a master of both the modern and the Baroque cello with the interpretative range and technical command equal to the most challenging works. He specialises in performances that cast new light on familiar repertoire. Gramophone magazine described him as a ‘musician through and through, someone you can always trust to get the message right.’ A familiar presence on Australian stages, Wispelwey has performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and made his Melbourne Recital Centre debut in 2011 with an acclaimed solo recital. In 2017, his ambitious agenda encompasses the complete cello works of Beethoven, the six solo suites of Bach, and Brahms’s cello sonatas all performed over three consecutive evenings. Melbournebased pianist Caroline Almonte is the perfect partner for the virtuoso musical conversations of Beethoven and Brahms. This is your opportunity to experience three facets of one of the world’s great cellists in one of the world’s great halls.

Ritual Diamonds Experience a new suite of music that is mysterious, complex and beautiful, as bass guitarist and ‘Australian jazz heavyweight’ (Rhythms magazine) Christopher Hale’s unique international project sees South Korean virtuoso, Minyoung Woo, joined by award-winning improvising musicians from Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. Following years of collaboration, the duo have developed a common musical language which draws on ancient shaman drumming, original rhythmic structures and improvisation styles fused with flavours of Brazil and flamenco. The result is a mode of rhythm that reaches deep into the underlying processes of Korean music and jazz, creating a new sound unique to this friendship.

Acclaimed harpsichord player Donald Nicolson (Latitude 37, Anja & Zlatna) will transport audiences to the heart of the 18th century, demonstrating on two harpsichords the tonal and tuning possibilities that were known to Bach himself. In 1722, J.S. Bach set out to explore a new way of thinking about sound. His explorations led to an astonishing achievement — two books of 24 Preludes and Fugues, in all major and minor keys. Join some of Australia’s most accomplished, creative and adventurous keyboard players as they journey through ‘the 48’, bringing insight and reflection to this music, as well as matching it with music that they feel illuminate and enhance these masterworks. This is a unique project across six concerts throughout 2017, celebrating the genius of J.S. Bach. Each concert will be followed by a short Q&A with the artists, allowing us all to reflect on and interrogate the music of the greatest of all Baroque composers. Transient Gestures Syzygy Ensemble
The award-winning contemporary music group Syzygy Ensemble have, in their short time together, made an impressive impact. They have quickly gained a reputation as one of Australia's finest new music ensembles, lauded for their virtuoso precision, innovative programming and ability to connect viscerally with their audiences. Transient Gestures captures musical ideas associated with change. Change can be deliberate in the case of Anthony Cheung's meticulously deconstructed Bach B-minor Partita, or it can be random in the case of Lachlan Skipworth, who uses systems that inform the length and density of material to conjure the aural effect of falling stars. Change can be reversible — the foreground and background constantly switches in Mantovani's Call to Air forcing the two players into a symbiotic relationship where each needs the other to realise the compete musical line. Or, change can be irreversible — Saariaho's Ashes uses the metaphor of a burning object to explore the idea of one-way transformation and disintegration. Syzygy Ensemble presents a carefully crafted program of contemporary repertoire that will engage and delight.

Orpheus Unsung
Steven Mackey, Solo Guitar Grammy-Award winning composer and guitarist Steven Mackey offers his 21st century interpretation of the myth of Orpheus, explored through microtonality and "underworldly" sounds. Structured in three acts, Orpheus Unsung is an orchestral conception of the electric guitar, where the virtuosity lies not only in the finger play but also in the footwork on the pedals which coax the loops into being more like responsive partners in chamber music. The hour-long narrative traces the myth of Orpheus in the underworld, structured in three acts that delineate the three phases of the journey: above ground, travelling the underworld and Orpheus’ return to the surface, into the land of the living.

Pianist Kristian Chong is one of Australia’s most sought-after musicians performing as a recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist. The series Kristian Chong & Friends is literally an assembly of his enthusiastic friends performing together some of the great chamber duo sonatas, trios, quartets and quintets. French flavours infuse this marvellous concert with Ravel’s famous Sonata for violin and piano and Chausson’s Concerto for violin, piano and string quartet. Renowned violinist Sophie Rowell joins Kristian to perform Ravel’s last chamber work. The second movement of his sonata is a great Ravel-styled homage to the Blues. Chausson’s Concerto is a passionate and fervent work; both the violin and piano work together in blazing landscapes of vivid colour and fire accompanied by a string quartet.
Named after the pioneering Margaret Sutherland who is considered the matriarch of Australian composition, in 2017 Sutherland Trio pays tribute to her legacy by featuring a work by a female composer in each concert. Bedřich Smetana’s only piano trio is considered one of the great masterpieces of the chamber repertoire. The trio is utterly compelling in its deeply rhapsodic and passionate use of Eastern European folk music, and its rich thematic variation is a milestone in Romanticism. Amy Beach’s Piano Trio was written in 1938 and is imbued with romantic and impressionistic gestures. Born in 1867, Beach was a prodigy in both piano and composition and was a successful pioneer for female composers in America and worldwide. Mostly self-taught, Beach navigated the expectations of society and her husband to emerge with a deeply poignant and unique musical voice.
In this concert the Stiletto Sisters explore the rich and darkly humorous world of Yiddish song and the mysterious poetry of medieval Sephardic music as well as instrumental works that have taken Jewish music as their inspiration. This program includes Ernest Bloch’s beautiful ‘From Jewish Life’ and ‘Baal Shem’, works by influential New York composer/improviser John Zorn, Fritz Kreisler and Hungary’s György Ligeti as well as contemporary song by Leonard Cohen and Deborah Conway. Stiletto Sisters have been wooing audiences in their home town of Melbourne for the past 15 years with their seductive blend of Hungarian gypsy, tango and love songs from around the world. Led with breathtaking virtuosity by Hungarian trained violinist Hope Csutoros (My Friend the Chocolate Cake) the trio also includes the dynamic piano accordion playing of Judy Gunson (Cosmo Cosmolino) and the wonderful talents of Jo To on double bass.

PLEXUS: Provenance PLEXUS brings together the talents of three of Melbourne's most vibrant and versatile musicians, Monica Curro, Philip Arkinstall and Stefan Cassomenos. Their goal: to commission and celebrate Australian and overseas composers. PLEXUS celebrates the artistic richness and depth of our amazing city by offering three world premieres from three stellar Melbourne composers. Michael Bakrnčev, Elliott Gyger and Linda Kouvaras will share their compositional wonders, and take us on their three very distinct musical journeys. Paying homage to the Verdehr Trio, PLEXUS presents another of their commissions by the eminent Canadian composer Stephen Chatman. The provenance of this piece from 2001 is the colourful world of jazz as shown in his exuberant offering of three movements titled Scales, Blues and Dance. To finish, PLEXUS will be joined by cellist Michelle Wood as they unearth a rare gem — the Hindemith Clarinet Quartet from 1938. Unsung The luxurious taste of a familiar song will always be celebrated — but what of the ones that didn't quite make it? Lauded composers like Gershwin, Arlen and Porter have hundreds of songs to their names, but you may not realise that not all of their compositions have become gems over time. Award-winning international jazz vocalist, Fem Belling, delves deep into the Great American Songbook, beyond the popular favourites we all know and love. The West End leading lady with a spectacular breadth of range unearths and brings to life those oft-forgotten, unsung melodies of Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, Richard Rogers, Lorenz Hart, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and others. A collection of songs that may have misfired, this program will be a fascinating sonic journey into the melodic psychology of what makes a hit song. INFORMATION

Open to soloists, duos or small ensembles, Australia’s talented young musicians will battle it out for the prestigious Elisabeth Murdoch Prize, which includes a combination of cash plus performance and recording opportunities. Competition repertoire must consist of work/s composed between 1810—1900 and not exceeding 20-minutes in total duration. Head to our website for entry information and competing guidelines. INFORMATION Sun 24 September 3pm Elisabeth Murdoch Hall (Two hours & 30-mins incl. interval) FREE – tickets required for entry Details at melbournerecital.com.au Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre The Great Romantics Competition is supported by Annamila Pty Ltd, Mrs Margaret S. Ross AM & Dr Ian C Ross
Following several suspended attempts at symphonic writing, Schubert finally came up with the goods for his Symphony No.9 — a symphony of ‘heavenly length’ (according to Robert Schumann) with its glorious melodies and colours placing it on equal footing with the great symphonies of Beethoven. Its sense of grandeur and space certainly make this work deserved of its ‘Great’ subtitle, but there are still some question marks about how it came to be. Whether you are new to classical music or a seasoned concertgoer, join esteemed music educator and conductor, Richard Gill and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for a part concert/part interactive lecture about the work, in the second of the three-part Ears Wide Open 2017 concert series.

East Meets West Though separated by a geographical and often political divide, Eastern and Western Europe have always had a very close and enduring relationship when viewed with the lens of the arts, serving as an inspiration in the search for our common humanity. History is filled with incredible cross-country connections that left small or sometimes great marks on a composer's musical output. This concert explores those connections through the realm of sound.
LOCAL HEROES
Orpheus' Lyre The members of Baroque trio Latitude 37 were drawn together by their passion for historically informed performance of 17th and 18th-century music. The special combination of Baroque violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord opens up a wealth of repertoire that is rarely explored by other Australian ensembles. For thousands of years musicians have been inspired by the stories of the mythical Orpheus who tamed nature and the heavens with his art. His story was the foundation for one of the Baroque's great contributions to music; opera. The tragedy and triumph of Orpheus forms the basis for Latitude 37's program which explores the emotional drama within a rich vein of 17th-century Italian music. With an expanded ensemble including harp and bass baritone David Greco, Orpheus' Lyre includes 17thcentury Italian instrumental masterpieces worthy of one of mythology's greatest musicians. The centrepiece of the program will be some of the most beautiful music ever written in excerpts from Monteverdi's Orfeo, in celebration of the 450th anniversary of the composer's birth.

Teeny Tiny Stevies
The children's alt-folk pop duo with a twist.
FLINDERS QUARTET
Teeny Tiny Stevies had their beginnings as a side project for Sibylla and Bethany Stephen's alt-folk-pop band The Little Stevies. It all began when Sibylla's first child hit 'toilet training' age. When she asked childcare if there were any books or songs to help introduce the idea of going to the toilet she was handed just one basic storybook. After an online search revealed even less, the penny dropped — they should write their own. Their debut release Useful Songs for Little People includes songs about getting dressed on your own, being patient, having a new baby sibling on the way, non-traditional family units, using manners and much more. Join Teeny Tiny Stevies this September school holidays and sing about all the ups and downs of being a kid. Death and the Maiden Flinders Quartet is instantly recognisable as one of Australia’s most loved chamber ensembles. Each work in this program tell vivid and wondrous stories. Schubert’s Death and the Maiden is a masterwork among quartets. Using the theme from his original song in which a terror-stricken maiden begs death to pass her by, Schubert builds variations upon it creating a pattern where the dark and powerful opening is met by the soft lyrical reply of the maiden. Calvin Bowman reimagines another seminal Schubert work Die Winterreise and the Quartet performs the 2010 commission by Richard Mills dedicated to their 10th anniversary, String Quartet No.4, Glimpses from my book of Dada.
