Melbourne is justly proud of its vibrant live music scene and the Centre is at the heart of this flourishing community of musicmakers and music-lovers. But vitally, the Melbourne Recital Centre’s influence spreads well beyond Southbank and in 2018 the Centre is increasing its musical footprint with an expanded program of regional concerts. From local favourites to international leaders, traversing the scale from classical to contemporary, this program is packed with experiences that will get you talking so I urge you to dive in and experience why Melbourne Recital Centre truly is the best place to hear.

Martin Foley Minister for Creative Industries

From the Chair Over the past nine years Melbourne Recital Centre has become an essential part of Melbourne’s musical life. In 2018 we look forward to welcoming over 200,000 music-lovers to the Centre’s sublime spaces to hear some of the world’s greatest artists, and to participate in our city’s vibrant music scene. So much goes into making an inspiring performance. Musicians have honed their skills for a lifetime, our behind-the-scenes team showcases them in the best possible light and sound, and the foyers and halls are made ready to welcome our guests. You play a vital part in this experience – your support, your engagement and

From the CEO Melbourne Recital Centre is a place for bold music-makers and passionate audiences, a place where you can experience a string quartet one night and a rock band the next. With two distinctive spaces finely tuned for music and the most diverse and dazzling selection of more than 500 events, the Centre is the best place to discover or rediscover music you love. You’ll encounter musicians from your neighbourhood, ensembles from across Australia and artists from around the globe in 2018. From the ACO to the MSO, we are delighted and honoured to host and partner with Australia’s most revered orchestras, ensembles, musicians and presenters. We celebrate our Local Heroes — 24 brilliant ensembles in 54 concerts in our most intimate room, the Salon (p.20). These are some of Melbourne’s most interesting musicians, a microcosm of the city’s diversity. This is not your traditional chamber music series though: this eclectic assortment of concerts will surprise and delight as classical music meets folk music from the Balkans and beyond. These performances are informal, accessibly-priced and are a delightful way to unwind at the end of the day. Our annual focus on the music of our time, the Metropolis New Music Festival, celebrates South Korean composer Unsuk Chin. In addition to retrospectives of her fascinating music, other concerts explore climate change, migration and the plight of Afghan women (p.32). What an incredible year ahead in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, beginning with our 2018 Signature Event in February: two evenings with Jordi Savall and Hespèrion XXI. This preeminent Catalan musician is renowned for his exquisite and thoughtprovoking performances, in this instance he collaborates with an ensemble from Mexico to explore the encounter between Renaissance Spain and Latin America. On the second evening,

your applause make the work of thousands of musicians possible each year. Thank you for the role you’ve already played in the Centre’s success. We need your help to sustain the diversity and intensity of our activities. Consider making a gift to Melbourne Recital Centre next time you purchase a ticket. Whether large or small, your donation makes a difference to the Centre’s work, our contribution to our state’s artistic vitality, and ultimately to the wellbeing of our community through the profound and transformative experience of live music. I look forward to welcoming you to the Centre soon.

Kathryn Fagg Chair, Melbourne Recital Centre

Savall gives us a tour of Baroque England, Spain and Italy (p.5). The Centre’s flagship international concert series, Great Performers (p.16) assembles stellar artists from around the world, including pianists Nelson Freire from Brazil and Melburnian Leslie Howard, American baritone Thomas Hampson and Australian tenor Stuart Skelton, and the astonishing accordion virtuoso Ksenija Sidorova from Latvia. The Centre is also a great place to experience pop, rock, jazz and electronic music with truly spectacular sound. Whether its post-rockers Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the haunting voice of Moses Sumney or the mesmerising groove of The Necks (p.36). In the Salon, the cream of Australia’s jazz scene creates immersive oneoff experiences just for you (p.39). The Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition (p.25) returns in July providing a launching pad for the finest string quartets and piano trios in the world. In addition, many other concerts, competitions and master classes throughout the year will showcase the rich talents of our next generation of national, regional and local great performers. If you want to experience more, visit our online video portal, Live at Melbourne Recital Centre (live.melbournerecital.com.au), where you can relive the excitement of selected performances, or read more at Soundescapes (soundescapes.melbournerecital.com.au). I hope you enjoy browsing this guide and discover many occasions to connect with the inspiring music and musicians of Melbourne Recital Centre. We look forward to welcoming you in 2018.

MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE – 2018 CONCERT GUIDE

THE PERFORMANCE SPACES Melbourne Recital Centre comprises two strikingly beautiful spaces, carefully crafted to present the best music the world has to offer and bring musicians and music-lovers closer. Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is lined with striking plywood panels of Australian plantation Hoop Pine timber, designed to resemble the back of a beautiful instrument and provide greater acoustic intimacy across the 1000-seat auditorium. The platform acoustics enrich the strength, clarity and blending of instruments as well as the communication between ensemble players on stage. The superbly organic acoustics of the Hall extend to the Salon, a uniquely intimate 150-seat performance and event space. Melbourne composer Percy Grainger’s 1937 graphic score, Free Music No.2 is inscribed across the surface to inspire players and audiences alike. We acknowledge the people of the Kulin nation on whose land Melbourne Recital Centre stands — we pay our respects to Melbourne’s First People, to their ancestors past and present, and to our shared future.

JORDI SAVALL WITH HESPÈRION XXI & TEMBEMBE ENSAMBLE CONTINUO Jordi Savall, ‘a performer of genius’ (The New Yorker) is joined by an intimate ensemble drawn from Hespèrion XXI, including his long-time colleague harpist Andrew Lawrence-King, to travel across Europe, from Spain to England, from the Renaissance to the Baroque.

WEDNESDAY 21 FEBRUARY 7.30PM

The viola da gamba is the poet-prince of a flourishing and polyglot artistic world, prized for its human-like voice and ability to convey a rainbow of moods. It was at home at the court of Versailles as the pubs of London. Savall and Hespèrion XXI survey works from the height of the viol’s reign, by Diego Ortiz, Tobias Hume and especially Marin Marais and his mysterious teacher Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, the subject of the film Tous le matins du monde, for which Savall provided a soundtrack of peerless historical accuracy and beauty. Savall coaxes music that is seductive and melancholy, stately and spirited out of his magical instrument, making the past as immediate and fresh as the present.

THURSDAY 22 FEBRUARY 7.30PM

The first program, Folías Antiguas y Criollas: From the Ancient World to the New World, spans music from the late Renaissance to popular music that survives today. The second program, Folías y Romanescas: The Golden Age Of The Viol, features Savall and an intimate Hespèrion XXI ensemble in the exquisite ‘greatest hits’ of 16th and 17th-century Spanish, French and English music for the viola da gamba and continuo.

AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra brings to life the rare sounds of Baroque and Classical masterpieces with the gorgeous sound of instruments from the period. To know the Brandenburg is to go back in time, but to view it through a modern lens. It is to revel in the music of the well-known and explore that of the less-known. To respect the instruments of the period while celebrating the artists of today and to sample the world’s virtuosos as you journey with the country’s biggest Baroque stars.

PIANO SERIES 2018 The pianoforte, more commonly called the piano, became, by the last quarter of the 18th century, a leading instrument of Western art music. A highly versatile instrument, it can sustain pitches in a lyrical fashion, creating all musical styles and moods, with enough volume to be heard through almost any musical ensemble. Almost every major Western composer from Mozart onward has played it, many as virtuosi, and the piano repertory — whether solo, chamber, or with orchestra — is at the heart of Western classical professional performance.

THE BEAUTIFUL BLUE DANUBE Written at the end of the 18th century, the opening of Beethoven’s ‘Pathétique’ Sonata continues to impress today for its dramatic power. Twenty years later, the ailing Schubert would complete his own Sonata in C minor. Only months away from his death, this work remains one of his crowning achievements. Johann Strauss’ famous Blue Danube Waltz provides the dashing conclusion to this Viennese-inspired program with pianist Hoang Pham. ‘A love of piano playing evident from the very first notes.’ The Advertiser SAT URDAY 17 MARCH 5PM Hoang Pham piano Beethoven Polonaise in C, Op.89 Beethoven Sonata in C minor, Op.13 ‘Pathétique’ Beethoven Selections from Six Bagatelles, Op.126

MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE – 2018 CONCERT GUIDE

THE GENIUS OF J.S. BACH The composer of some of the most famous works of the classical repertoire, Johann Sebastian Bach has influenced perhaps more composers than any other figure in music. Better known during his lifetime primarily as an outstanding organ player and technician, the youngest of eight children born to musical parents, Johann Sebastian was destined to become a great musician. His sacred music, organ and choral works, and other instrumental music had an enthusiasm and freedom that concealed immense rigor. Bach’s use of counterpoint was brilliant and innovative, and the immense complexities of his compositional style still amaze musicians today. Many consider him the greatest composer of all time. Celebrate the genius of J.S. Bach in a program featuring orchestral, instrumental, vocal music and more. A line-up of Australia’s finest Baroque musicians led by virtuoso violinist Rachael Beesley performs an intoxicating program of masterworks. It’s a Bach weekend with this celebration concert on Saturday 16 June and the Centre’s Bach Competition on Sunday 17 June. 3MBS BACH MARATHON

MELBOURNE BACH CHOIR

The 3MBS Bach Marathon brings Australia’s finest classical musicians together to present an immersive all-day experience celebrating the works of the Bach family. Six concerts over 12 hours make the Bach Marathon Australia’s biggest single-day classical music event, featuring many of our greatest chamber and vocal musicians. Highlights include C.P.E. Bach’s St Matthew Passion performed by the Melbourne Bach Choir and Orchestra, and Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Timo-Veikko Valve performing the Cello Suite BWV 1012 on a five-string piccolo cello. The all-day event concludes with the masterful Goldberg Variations by eminent pianist and teacher Stephen McIntyre and past students Caroline Almonte, Kristian Chong, Stefan Cassomenos, Lachlan Tan and Peter de Jager.

The Melbourne Bach Choir (MBC) was founded in 2005 under Music Director Rick Prakhoff to perform J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion. Since then the choir’s repertoire has broadened, although the works of Bach remain at its core. The Melbourne Bach Choir has toured to China and Europe, and its Good Friday concerts have become an important fixture in Melbourne’s musical calendar. The MBC is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in choral performance, to supporting music education and is committed to donating to community, aid and charitable organisations.

The ultraconservative regime of the Taliban has meant that the lives of Afghan women are largely invisible to the outside world. Landays, poems comprising of a single rhyming couplet on subjects like love, grief, home and war, offer a surprising and vivid glimpse into this secret world. Adapted from Eliza Griswold’s book, I Am the Beggar of the World: Landays from Contemporary Afghanistan, Peacocke’s evocative work explores the passion, desperation and often humour of these women who are trapped in a seemingly veiled existence. MOUNT EERIE WITH JULIE BYRNE Two of life’s great wanderers, Mount Eerie and Julie Byrne have a lot of time for each other. Phil Elverum, aka Mount Eerie is a prolific multi-instrumentalist and producer who’s worked across countless projects and bands; a writer, photographer, painter and poet. His latest release A Crow Looked at Me was lauded with Pitchfork’s ‘Best New Music’ rating and is a heart wrenching ode to the death of his wife – akin to the autobiographical releases by Sun Kil Moon, Sufjan Stevens and Nick Cave. In perfect accompaniment on a double bill, Julie Byrne’s blend of folk, new age and silence was first praised by Elverum when he saw her play — a deep appreciation mingled through moments of breathlessness. Black Emperor returns showcasing their new album Luciferian Towers along with songs from their critically acclaimed back catalogue. The Montreal post-rockers have a reputation for delivering the most mesmerising shows, infusing orchestral dynamics with stunning ‘cinema-esque’ film loops and epic rock power, where composition and emotion fuse into a sound like no other. Their ability to ‘make resistance sound holy and love sound like a revolutionary act’ (NME) is contained in the band’s inimitable signposts and touchstones of sound: savage drones and oscillating overtones, inexorable crescendos and scorched earth transitions.

THE NECKS

COLIN HAY ‘FIERCE MERCY TOUR 2018’

The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia. Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms. Featuring lengthy pieces which slowly unravel in the most mesmerising fashion and frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, the 18 albums by The Necks stand up to re-listening time and time again. The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is possibly unique in the world today. Melbourne Recital Centre is delighted to welcome back The Necks for their third live iteration in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

Colin Hay returns to Australia with his U.S. band — a veritable smorgasbord of international flavours. Featuring Cuban, San Miguel Perez on guitar and tres with fellow Cuban Yosmel Montejo on bass, Scheila Gonzalez on keyboard, flute and sax, Cecilia Noel on percussion and vocals and Jimmy Branly on drums. Colin’s latest album, Fierce Mercy, finds him at the top of his game. Alongside the thoughtful storytelling in his songs, Hay’s shows are peppered with hilarious anecdotes from his, often surreal, experiences in the world of rock music.

PERFUME GENIUS

TINARIWEN

Pop provocateur Perfume Genius has evolved into a formidable force of summoning songs that are deeply vulnerable and achingly confessional. His pop smarts and sonic innovation is a primal scream that empowers and enthralls. Stretching the outmost corners of the human psyche, his soft, tender balladry turns hauntingly dark. Often exploring subjects such as sexuality, homophobia and domestic abuse, singer/songwriter Mike Hadreas aka Perfume Genius, draws on influences from PJ Harvey and Liz Phair, combining poetic honesty with brutally contrasting sounds. Dubbed as ‘pure decadence’ (Pitchfork) Pefume Genius’ newest album No Shape is his most realised yet, a tender transcendental protest record of love and devotion.

The desert is resilient and strong, and the people are gentle giants among the sand, storms and sun. For Saharan blues band Tinariwen, the desert is their home, and their hypnotic and electrifying guitar rock reflects complex realities of their home base in North West Africa. Founded in the 1980s in Tureg camps in Libya and exposed to western music they deliver songs imbued with aching beauty and lonesome poetry. Their music was bootlegged and traded around the region, earning them a devout following and after travelling for ten years join these weary world soldiers as they make their way to Elisabeth Murdoch Hall for a night of achingly beautiful desert rock.

SW ED EN

JOSÉ GONZÁLEZ Swedish singer-songwriter and modern day heartbreaker José González brings his inspired indie folk renaissance to Melbourne Recital Centre across two huge evenings of solo performance. The fingerpicking balladeer first gained attention with his cover of the Knife’s ‘Heartbeats’ and sparse renditions of Joy Division and Massive Attack following the stylings of Elliott Smith and Nick Drake. He’s the master of meditative, pattering percussion and subtle vocal swells mingled with bossa nova flair that time over displays his song-craft and folk sensibilities as a leading artist of his craft. Where Veneer and In Our Nature, might have sounded sparse and barren in parts, José’s latest album Vestiges & Claws has an altogether new feeling to it, at once warmer and darker than before. This time he’s found inspiration in sprawling ‘70s Brazilian productions, American folk rock and West African desert blues. His raw and intimate voice has been leaving Australian audiences aching for more with each passing visit and now finally makes his debut appearance within the acoustically perfect surrounds of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

Variations on a Massacre

Django’s Legacy

Zulya and The Children of the Underground perform exquisite original music. Inspired by lead singer Zulya’s Tatar and Russian heritage and her interest in the fairy-tale world of storytelling and riddles, this is intriguing contemporary music with a twist. Poignant and beautiful, mysterious and macabre, Zulya’s smouldering vocals are superbly supported by accordion, clarinet, guitar, double bass and percussion — contemporary music with an intriguing twist.

Expatriate Matthew Sheens has made impressive progress after moving to New York just a few years ago, after winning an APRA/AMCOS Professional Development Award and Downbeat Student Award. This concert showcases his latest original works, Variations on a Massacre, based on a series of musical observations since living in the U.S.A. after the rise of Trump and the far right. The music involves extended form work with improvisations.

Ultrafox present an evening of swinging gypsy style jazz in the classic Hot Club of France tradition. With years of performing experience Ultrafox combines the muscular driving rhythm of the Manouche and lyricism of Hot Jazz to tender ballads, waltzes and their own compositions. Featuring Peter Baylor on guitar, Esther Henderson on violin and Julie O’Hara on vocals the band pays tribute to the music of the gypsy legend, Django Reinhardt and imbue it with their own personal stamp.

Everything It Could Be Everything It Could Be is the result of the long-time collaboration between Kennedy Snow, Melbourne drummer and composer Sonja Horbelt, and acclaimed soul and jazz vocalist Nina Ferro – who has returned to Australia after a decade in London. This current body of songs sees the quintet project expand to encompass all the lush and beauty of more textural ballad arrangements featuring a string quartet, but also stretch out to encompass a broad range of styles from jazz to neo-soul and R&B.

Tony Gould & Ben Robertson Duo Pianist Tony Gould and Ben Robertson (double bass) are regarded as two of Australia’s greatest musicians, noted especially for their remarkable ability to improvise and create the most exquisite spontaneous creations. Tony and Ben improvise on the classical, jazz and traditional folk music and new works which they will premiere.

The Outsiders The Outsiders, written by Ross McHenry, brings together three leading musicians to perform an extended suite of new music that explores the idea of a collision between geography and cultural identity. Ricochet is a sound art group developed in 2013 out of the Melbourne free improvisation movement. Their music is constructed as a long form improvisation, most often directed and moulded by communal restrictions or concepts. Mixed Reckoning is an improvised piece in 12 short movements inspired by Japanese 'haiku.' Conceptually grounded in the seasons of Australia, the work also takes cues from Steve Reich and Korean philosophy.

Trumpeter/vocalist Audrey Powne performs with her quartet of the finest emerging young jazz musicians. Performing her original songs inspired by jazz standards and crooners, Powne breathes new life into this style for a new generation with lyrics exploring modern relationships and melodies which draw upon contemporary R&B and jazz traditions alike.

The Alexander Nettelbeck Trio

Lullaby Project

Emma Pask

Since its inception in 2009, the Alexander Nettelbeck Trio has captivated audiences with their energetic and eclectic style of jazz. Here Today is the latest release and second album from the Melbourne-based ensemble of composer/pianist Alexander Nettelbeck, bassist Jonathon Zion and drummer Simone White. A melding of disciplines from avant-garde and classical to funk and jungle, the Trio and its music breathe with the unity of a single body, highlighting the inexplicable connection between human and sound, musician and expression.

Contemporary pianist/composer Nat Bartsch’s recent emergence as a solo artist has been met with much acclaim, blending both improvisation and lyrical post classical composition. Since becoming a mother in 2017, Bartsch has turned her hand to the composition of lullabies. Influenced by music and medicine and music therapy research, her lullaby project is intended for babies and young children as well as music loving parents.

‘The greatest gift to Australian jazz vocals in the last decade’ is how James Morrison, Australia’s most awarded jazzman, describes Emma Pask. Now the award-winning Australian vocalist is bringing her original voice and style to a performance of timeless swinging jazz standards, upbeat Latin rhythms, original material and tender ballads.

Trio Music: Reimagined

Featuring the very finest improvising musicians in Australia, pianist Barney McAll and his worthy constituents takes you on a journey of spirit music and lyricism. Barney has performed with a veritable who’s who of international jazz artists over the last 20 years living in New York City and has distilled his experience and vision into his newest recording Hearing the Blood.

Women in Jazz

Wayfinders is an all-acoustic, improvising ensemble that explores the nexus between improvised music and folk traditions; both sacred and secular. The latest project of drummer/composer Ronny Ferella, the trio shares many years playing music together. Wayfinders were the ancient Polynesian navigators who used the signs of nature to guide them on their sea journeys. It is this deep sense of touch and oneness with one’s environment that Wayfinders hope to communicate.

From the early evolution of jazz, women have overcome significant obstacles to help shape the sound of jazz with their songs. Jackie Bornstein brings her rich and emotive vocals to these compositions which are some of the most moving songs in the jazz repertoire. With her top band, Jackie will share the music and stories of female composers and lyricists including Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Bernice Petkere, Dorothy Fields and more. THURSDAY 25 OCTOBER 7PM

AN EVENING WITH DEVA PREMAL & MITEN WITH MANOSE

Deva Premal and Miten with Manose offer a special evening of inspiring chants and music. Their chants offer something of a musical balm to calm the nerves and nourish the spirit. Deva and Miten began their journey into love, music and meditation in 1990 when they met at an Ashram in India while studying meditation. Since then they have committed themselves to a nomadic existence, intent on sharing a life carried on the wings of these powerful healing formulas, known to the world as Mantra. Deva and Miten have released a string of CDs since their first, The Essence, in 1998, which rocketed to the top of the Alternative music charts around the world. Their annual world tour, which includes around 25 countries annually, attracts thousands of devotees. HOW TO LIVE BETTER LONGER (WITHOUT REALLY TRYING) An Evening of Sex, Drugs and Overeating with Dr Chris and Dr Xand van Tulleken. Over the course of the evening Chris and Xand will examine how it’s possible to get the most out of ourselves, addressing a question that has troubled the great thinkers of the ages through all of time: ‘what can I get away with?’ Their answers come from their own work as doctors and scientists at Oxford, Harvard and University College London — as well as the swamp forests of the Congo, Malaysian religious rituals, hallucinogens from the Amazon, naked swimming in the Arctic Ocean and work in refugee camps and war zones. The evening features slides, video clips, probably an unscripted argument between the brothers and at least one tastefully composed nude picture. Leave the kids at home. Dr Chris and Dr Xand van Tulleken are doctors, researchers, parents and TV presenters. They have won two BAFTAs for their popular children’s series, Operation Ouch. ARTIST-INRESIDENCE

In 2018 we welcome internationally acclaimed recorder virtuoso and artistic director Genevieve Lacey as our Artist-in-Residence. She has not only reinvented the way we think about the recorder, but has also emerged as a cultural and creative leader in this country, with a deep engagement with indigenous musicians, with improvisation and site-specific works, as a commissioner of new works, and as a dynamic festival director. Genevieve communicates her passion with a quiet authority, drawing us deeply into her passionate soul. We look forward to having her with us in 2018 for a year of musical conversations. Our Writer in Residence program continues in 2018 with a new partnership with the Emerging Writers Festival. Throughout the year, three writers will create new pieces in response to works at Melbourne Recital Centre. Playful, provocative, poetic – these writers strive not simply to critique, but rather to take the work they see as a leaping-off point to give us a new interpretation or another layer of meaning.
