MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE • The information in this brochure is correct at time of printing.

WOMINJEK A, WELCOME It’s an exciting time in the Melbourne Arts Precinct as Southbank Boulevard undergoes a transformation which will add more public space at our door and better connections for your journey. Thanks for bearing with us during these changes outside. Inside Melbourne Recital Centre, amazing musical experiences await you. The critically-acclaimed Great Performers 2018 concert series culminates with performances by pianist Paul Lewis (27 September & 1 October), violinist Tasmin Little with pianist Piers Lane (23 October) and incredible Latvian accordionist Ksenija Sidorova (4 December). In October, the Melbourne International Arts Festival travels through time and across continents, bringing Australian and international artists onto our stages. Discover the tender Portuguese blues of Ana Moura (7 October), renowned director Peter Sellars collaborates with the LA Master Chorale in Lagrime di San Pietro (5 & 6 October) and fiery works of 18th-century Naples are performed by Van Diemen’s Band (8 October) — a dazzling chamber orchestra of Australia’s finest early musicians. We join Melbourne Music Week to present Leon Vynehall (19 November). This exclusive Australian appearance features a 10-piece string ensemble. Later in November, 2018 Artist-in-Residence Genevieve Lacey premieres her new work, Soliloquy (22 November), devised with choreographer and director Gideon Obarzanek. As summer begins, cool off with Ólafur Arnalds (1 & 3 December) whose music evokes the stark beauty of Iceland, and encounter the dreamy vocals of electro-pop star Panda Bear (13 December). Finally, enjoy delightful Christmas festivities with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra’s Noël! Noël! Follow Your Star (8 December), the family-friendly magic of The Snowman (8 December), and Peter Combe’s Christmas Album (12 December). And — putting an untraditional adult twist on Christmas — cabaret Prancer and Vixen Ride Again! (8 December) invites you to enjoy Yuletide pop classics. Almost 200,000 music-lovers were astonished, entertained and moved by performances at the Centre this year. On behalf of the Melbourne Recital Centre family, my heartfelt thanks for your support and for your applause. We’re looking forward to revealing the surprises and delights in store for you as we celebrate the Centre’s 10th Anniversary in 2019.

Musical Politics in the French Court: Italian Infiltration!

The North Atlantic

Around the turn of the 18th century, a strange and exotic music was performed in the private salons of Paris – the sonatas of Arcangelo Corelli. Lucinda Moon (violin), Laura Vaughan (‘gamba) and Jacqueline Ogeil (harpsichord) perform sonatas from Parisian salons, exploring works from the first wave of French composers influenced by Corelli. Also featured is a sonata by one of the few 18th-century female composers, Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre.

Nostalgic melodies and lyrics of migration are re-imagined by the Horsley & Williams Duo (uilleann pipes & recorders) and guests Melbourne vocalist Georgie Darvidis and songwriter and folk expert Benjamin Harrison. Experience a remarkable conversation between continents and across centuries from 18th-century folk song to Darvidis and Harrison’s new work.

Renowned for atmospheric soundscapes that weave soaring melodies with crunchy beats, the concert features a uniquely wired ensemble of a string quartet, percussion and Arnalds' playground of pianos and synthesisers. The centrepiece of the show is a generative algorithm device he designed to control two self-playing pianos — acting as one. ‘Each time they are played is a little different, making every performance unique,’ says Arnalds. Sonatas for Strings As Claude Debussy once surmised: ‘We must agree that the beauty of a work of art will always remain a mystery’. This Australian Chamber Orchestra concert epitomises the sentiment, uniting a collection of pieces that trade an explanatory narrative for a rich vein of timeless beauty. William Walton’s Sonata is a seemingly effortless interweaving of parts, Sir Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings remains a favourite for musicians and audiences alike, and stirring works by Sculthorpe, Ravel and Debussy adorn this most memorable musical treat.

Panda Bear ‘AMERICAN INDIE AT ITS MOST AMBITIOUS’ PITCHFORK As both a solo artist and a member of Animal Collective, Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) has proven immensely influential since rising to prominence in the early 2000s. Indie and mainstream acts have incorporated his style of reverbsoaked, Beach Boys-esque vocals and fluid drumming, while a myriad of indie electronic artists have been inspired by his daring approach to composition. He’s collaborated with Zomby, Teengirl Fantasy, Daft Punk and many more, and released numerous acclaimed albums, including his most recent — 2018’s A Day with the Homies. ‘Since the juiciest action is entirely focused in the deeper zones of the frequency spectrum (at least from where I’ve sat), power was key,’ said Lennox. PERFUME GENIUS Writer-in-Residence Adalya NashHussein reflects on music making watching the pop-provocateur

Perfume Genius, on stage at Melbourne Recital Centre, 9 March 2018

Adalya Nash-Hussein

This year Melbourne Recital Centre partners with the Emerging Writers Festival for its Writers-in-Residence program. Meet Adalya NashHussein — an ex-conservatoire violinist with a background in experimental criticism whose favourite writers include Mohsin Hamid, Jillian Tamaki and Janet Malcolm. Adalya recounts her experience watching popprovocateur Perfume Genius live at the Centre in March in the excerpt below:

Perfume Genius’s music is undeniably intimate and this, combined with the biographical details that singer Mike Hadreas has shared, has encouraged critics and interviewers to project a narrative onto his albums; his sound and self have ‘grown’, fragility and trauma building to transcendent boldness.

‘What people describe as badass or strong usually has to do with volume. If the volume is up and loud, people think you’re a badass.’

Throughout my classical training, the relationship between volume and dynamics is increasingly complicated. In simple music, piano means soft and forte means loud. The character of the fortes and pianos is either identical or obvious—a timid piano, a boisterous forte. ‘I guess the music only feels good when it makes me really uncomfortable to write and to perform, you know, when it’s even a bit out of my range and requires more of me than maybe I naturally have in the moment… Even though it started really meek and quiet, that was a lot for me to do at that point and so I keep adding stuff on and doing it even though I know I’m afraid.’ I am a bad soloist (in part) because I am never able to create a piano that isn’t also shy, a piano where my bow still makes weighty contact with the string. At university, my teacher brings it up in every lesson. ‘You should hear a sort of tchtchtchtch sound underneath the note’, he says, pushing my forearm into the string. What I miss most now is playing in orchestras. In the middle of a string section, carefully matching your bow strokes to the people around you, you become aware of your body as connected to the other bodies around you. There are these dramatic swells where the orchestra rises as one, and this collective energy overwhelms me unlike anything else I’ve experienced. Time seems to hover in the melodrama and I have to stop myself from laughing out loud.
