WOMINJEK A, WELCOME It is my great pleasure to introduce you to the start of our 10th Anniversary celebrations. Like all milestones, this one is best marked in the presence of friends: with some of your favourite artists and new discoveries to surprise and delight. Whether it’s your first time or if you’ve been with us from our beginning, please join us in 2019 to experience unforgettable music-making. Music Play (16—19 January) has become a summer tradition for families and kids. Big concerts in the Hall include a Nutcracker with dancing and a sprinkling of magic, while mini-concerts, interactive workshops and lots of free, fun activities take over the whole Centre. We’re throwing a party on our 10th Birthday and you’re invited! Embracing the past, present and future of bold music-making, three generations of musicians treat you to joyous performances. And as our gift to you, all tickets to the 10th Birthday Gala Concert (8 February) are just $10. One of the world’s greatest period instrument ensembles makes its Australian debut when the Gabrieli Consort & Players performs Henry Purcell’s King Arthur (16 & 17 February). The Gabrieli’s virtuoso vocal and period instrument performers under the direction of the brilliant Paul McCreesh give Purcell’s resplendent masterpiece new life. In March, The Sixteen returns to our glorious Hall for an a cappella match made in heaven.

TRANSFORMING SOUTHBANK The City of Melbourne is improving Southbank Boulevard. Construction works may affect your transport arrangements.

ACCESS Southbank Boulevard is closed to car and bus traffic between St Kilda Road and Sturt Street. A temporary detour via Grant Street is in place for northbound traffic on St Kilda Road. Access to and from the Arts Centre Melbourne Car Park is limited. Visit melbournerecital.com.au/ construction for more information.

The 2019 season of Great Performers opens with the incredible Satu Vänskä, Principal Violinist of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, performing Beethoven, Ravel and J.S. Bach (20 February). It’s a joy that Jordi Savall, a beloved artist with a close relationship with the Centre can join us this year. His exquisite viola da gamba playing is truly transportive (29 March). If rock and pop are your flavour, your summer could include the likes of Julia Holter (21 January), Rufus Wainwright (25 February), Rhye (6 & 7 March) and Calexico (24 & 25 January), all making their Melbourne Recital Centre debuts. There are also a selection of laid-back evenings in the Primrose Potter Salon featuring Australian jazz, pop and classical artists. We also welcome back Musica Viva, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Australian Brandenburg Orchestra as they begin their 2019 seasons, their 10th year at the Centre. This is just the beginning of a year-long celebration of 10 years of great music. If you’ve never been to a concert and experienced the Centre yourself, this year we are offering a limited number of $10 tickets at over 300 events (see page 8 for details). Since the Centre opened in 2009, thousands of musicians from Australia and around the globe have played to well-over a million Victorians. On behalf of everyone who performs and works at Melbourne Recital Centre, thank you for your passionate support over the last decade. We look forward to seeing you at the Centre soon. Warm regards

BIG & MINI CONCERTS, WORKSHOPS & FREE FOYER FUN A music festival for kids and families to discover music, play an instrument and make some noise.

The Nutcracker & I by Alexandra Dariescu

James Morrison Kids Show

The Bush Concert

With a trumpet, guitar, bass and drums, James Morrison and his band prove that the nosiest instruments make the most amazing sounds. James Morrison’s contagious passion for playing an instrument began when he himself was a child — a joy he is dedicated to passing onto the next generation. Listeners both big and small are sure to swing and groove to the exciting tunes created by Morrison and his band.

Adelaide composer Mark Simeon Ferguson has set Helga Visser’s picture book classic The Bush Concert to music. Melbourne Youth Orchestra makes the sounds of all the bush birds, while Susan Ferguson tells the endearing story of how, during a terrible drought, the birds put on a gala concert to cheer themselves up with singing, dancing and magic tricks. Kids love picking the ‘galahs’ and ‘noisy miners’ from the different instruments on stage.

NENEH CHERRY Swedish-born singer-songwriter and rapper Neneh Cherry is one of the country’s most universally recognised names due to the runaway international success of her four studio albums. After the success of her last Australian tour in 2014, fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of her powerhouse of a voice. A fascinating musician in her own right, her associations have long been reflected in Cherry’s sound, and nearly 30 years on from her debut album, Raw Like Sushi, she hasn’t ditched her guiding principle: to merge all manner of influences — hip-hop, jazz, R&B, dance and pop — under the umbrella of her own unruly and idiosyncratic sensibility. The Fretless

Kuniko Kato

Winners of the 2017 JUNO for Instrumental Album of Year, The Fretless is a new approach to folk music. It may look like a string quartet, but with its unique balance of fiddle, viola, cello, rhythm and melody, it shatters all expectations. The fiddle tradition runs deep and their roots are based in Celtic and Canadian fiddle styles. Taking traditional music to a new level, The Fretless transforms fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate, beautiful and highenergy arrangements.

Percussion virtuoso, Kuniko Kato’s exquisite musical insight, expressive, elegant performance style attracts not only audiences, but established conductors and composers too. Performing her original arrangements of Bach, Reich and Pärt, Kuniko’s flawless technique when playing both keyboard and percussion instruments blends seamlessly with her profound musical intelligence.

Lisa Gerrard & Paul Grabowsky Melbourne-born Lisa Gerrard is known worldwide for her darkly cinematic contralto voice and as a member of Dead Can Dance. Equally renowned as a film score composer, her impressive work includes Whale Rider (2002), Fateless (2005), and Gladiator (2000) for which she received a Golden Globe. Alternating between English and her own personal language (what she describes as 'the language of the Heart'), she is one of Australia's most captivating voices. Paul Grabowsky has had an expansive and varied career. Whether as a composer, teacher, television personality, mentor or advocate for the role of artistic expression as a defining attribute of contemporary life, for him this is all informed by his work as a pianist, and composer, particularly in the field of jazz, where, according to him, 'the piano never lies'. Among his many awards are five ARIAs, the Melbourne Prize for Music and an H.C. Coombs Fellowship.

KING ARTHUR G A BR I E L I CO NSO RT & PL AY E R S The Gabrieli Consort & Players are world-renowned interpreters of great vocal and instrumental repertoire from the Renaissance to the present day. Over 35 years, the ensemble’s repertoire has expanded beyond the Baroque canon to include opera, virtuosic a cappella programs, and astonishing reconstructions of historic musical events in performances and recordings that surprise, challenge and inspire. This program of Purcell’s glorious semi-opera King Arthur is a new performing edition by Gabrieli’s Christopher Suckling and Artistic Director Paul McCreesh. King Arthur’s Britons battle the Saxons, supernatural characters step in, and enchanting music ripples with wit, tenderness and colour. Led by Paul McCreesh, the Gabrieli Consort & Players respectfully illuminates Purcell’s genius with its acclaimed vitality. Lunar New Year Concert Memories from Childhood

Celebrate the 2019 Lunar New Year with one of Australia’s leading chamber ensembles, Southern Cross Soloists, and an impressive line-up of guest artists as they bid adieu (zàijiàn) to the Chinese Year of the Dog and usher in the Year of the Pig — a year which promises to be full of good fortune and luck. GREAT PERFORMERS

Satu Vänskä & Kristian Chong ‘Vänskä’s technical assurance and pristine tone, her delivery of bounding, cascading and crunching flourishes a master class in technique.’ THE AUSTRALIAN

Opening the Great Performers Series in 2019 is one of Australia’s superstar musicians — violinist Satu Vänskä. Well known as a member of the acclaimed Australian Chamber Orchestra, Satu also has a glittering career as a solo artist, breaker of boundaries, maker of magic. In this eclectic and sublime program, you will see why she is a national treasure to rejoice in. The multifaceted talent and exceptional technique of Satu Vänskä have seen her singing with the likes of Barry Humphries, Brian Ritchie and Meow Meow, playing in underground clubs, and of course, being Principal Violin of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Vänskä’s panache, versatility and insight is on display in the intricacies of Bach, Beethoven’s heroic A-major sonata, Ravel’s jazzily seductive sonata, the haunting soundscapes of Saariaho and the dynamism of Lutosławski. Ravel’s homage to the brilliance of ‘gypsy’ fiddling, Tzigane, is the ultimate showpiece for both Vänskä’s Stradivarius and her stylish virtuosity. INFORM AT ION

The Sixteen An Immortal Legacy The Sixteen is a musical treasure. The richness, beauty and expressivity of the virtuoso choir has earned it a global following in the four decades since it was founded by conductor Harry Christophers. Whether performing Renaissance masterpieces or works composed especially for the ensemble, its members sing with power, precision and passion. The Sixteen explores the immortal legacy of Tudor composers Thomas Tallis and William Byrd — Catholic at a time when Catholics were persecuted. That they composed some of the most exquisite sacred music of the 16th century, often performed in secret, is testament to the power of their creativity and faith. The a cappella tradition forged by Tallis and his contemporaries lives in the vivid and moving music of Britten, Tippett and James MacMillan. The warmth and clarity of The Sixteen’s voices are a sublime match for Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

REBETIEN

2019 Rebetiko Festival: The Surge of the Underground Rebetiko (Greek Blues) is urban improvised music melding Byzantine, Turkish, Greek, Sephardic, jazz and other forms. Rebetiko musical and cultural expression are linked to song and dance that spread among the urban working-class populations in Smyrna (Izmir) and Constantinople (Istanbul) around the turn of the 20th century. It found its home in the ports of Athens and Thessaloniki after the expulsion of Greeks from Modern Turkey in the 1920s. Rebetiko pays homage to the past and reflects a modern Greece with new diverse musical influences. Direct from Greece, Rebetien showcases its authentic Rebetiko sound and will be supported by international and local Rebetiko artists.

GREAT PERFORMERS

Jordi Savall

with Xavier Diaz-Latorre ‘A genre-defying combination of scholarship, collaboration and exuberant music-making.’ THE AUSTRALIAN

Winner of three Helpmann Awards for his concerts presented at Melbourne Recital Centre over the past years, we welcome back the beloved Jordi Savall, with guitarist Xavier Díaz-Latorre, in this special exclusive program. The recital surveys the greatest works for viol, in the hands of the greatest player of our time. Jordi Savall’s poetic musicianship has illuminated cultures as distant in time and place as Ancient Greece and Medieval Japan, but it’s Baroque Europe that feels like his homeland. And no wonder: Savall’s exquisite instrument flourished in the palaces and homes of 18th-century France, Germany, Spain and England. Composer/performers created a rich repertoire for the uniquely human and expressive voice of the viola da gamba. They have found the finest advocate for their music in Jordi Savall and his colleague Xavier DíazLatorre. They survey the golden age of the gamba centred on Marin Marais, who dazzled even the Sun King Louis XIV with his playing. INFOR M AT ION
