p08 The Centre’s 10th Anniversary is a year-long celebration of great music and performers from Melbourne, Australia and the world, in a glorious diversity of concerts. I hope that you find music that surprises, moves and delights you. Our acclaimed concerts in the intimate Primrose Potter Salon showcase Melbourne’s best classical, world and jazz artists in relaxed sunset performances. They’re a great way to discover new artists and repertoire, and enjoy with friends. We’re delighted that we’ve played a role in nurturing a vibrant community of artists and audiences over the last decade. In Elisabeth Murdoch Hall experience the best of Bluesfest when we present roots legend Keb’ Mo’ (15 April), the stunning trio of I’m With Her (18 April), and the folk icon Arlo Guthrie (23 April). These concerts are rare chances to get up close and personal with your favourite musicians, in a truly inspiring space. We also welcome R&B luminary Meshell Ndegeocello (24 April), guitarist Harts (30 May) playing the music of Jimi Hendrix and Paul Kelly (14 June) in collaboration with composer James Ledger. Multitalented actress/singer Megan Mullally of TV’s Will and Grace and her musical partner Stephanie Hunt bring their unique band Nancy And Beth (12 & 13 June) — a singing, dancing journey through classic Americana with a quirky twist.

One of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles, the three French musicians of Trio Wanderer perform trios spanning three centuries that include Haydn, Dvořák’s ‘Dumky' and Rachmaninoff.

MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO It’s an honour to present one of the world’s greatest classical chamber groups, Trio Wanderer (9 April). The three exceptional musicians of this group have toured the globe making music that stirs the soul. This is the first of a series of concerts by the world’s great chamber ensembles. Solo pianist Kirill Gerstein (3 June) will astound in his Great Performers recital as will violinist Vadim Gluzman’s concert (25 June) featuring Beethoven’s mighty ‘Kreutzer’ sonata. Melbourne Recital Centre is also home to immersive festivals, including the Metropolis New Music Festival (2 – 4 May) starring the propulsive music of Louis Andriessen, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and chamber ensembles. Yirramboi (8 May), a celebration of the music and art of the First Nations, and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (31 May — 8 June) return. Finally, our newest festival Recentre (28 — 30 June) will relax, revive and refresh you body and soul this winter with music for reflection. Live music is the perfect way to light up those dark and chilly evenings in the warm and welcoming spaces of the best place to hear. Join us.

Melbourne Recital Centre opens the doors of its intimate Salon one Monday a month for a free open rehearsal featuring the very best of Melbourne’s chamber musicians. It’s an open door policy for anyone to come in and discover something new or hear local artists rehearse new works, new programs and try out new ideas.

Formed in 2008, Strelitzia is a vibrant piano trio praised for its innovative and eclectic programs with influences ranging from jazz and world music to popular dance music. Adored classical works and contemporary gems come alive through the ensemble’s playing, from Haydn's effervescent trio for his friend Therese Bartolozzi to Elena Kats-Chernin’s Calliope Dreaming commemorating Haydn and Shostakovich's epic Piano Trio No.2, dedicated to the memory of his friend Ivan Sollertinsky.

The Savannah Way Trio The String Contingent confidently walks the line between folk, classical, jazz and bluegrass. The ensemble’s music is inspired by travels to diverse landscapes and cultures. Last year they drove the magnificient Savannah Way from Cairns to Broome, writing music while accompanied by morning birdsong, feeding fish and the sand between their toes. Penny Quartet performs decisive, gritty and tender works with genuine expressivity. Be immersed in a world of primeval desire and unreasoning emotion, from the beauty of 15th-century harmonies to the raw power of Prokofiev at his best. Prokofiev’s impressive String Quartet No.1 is a work of engaging propulsion and intensity balanced with charm in a program complemented by György Kurtág’s Hommage à Jacob Obrecht.

Be transported to the theatrical Tenebrae mass of the Paris convent of Longchamp, and delight in François Couperin’s enthralling and mysterious Leçons de ténèbres (Lessons of Darkness), a surprisingly sensual piece, written for Holy Week in 1714. Brought to life by Ensemble Ancien, these alluring works are considered among the most beautiful vocal works of the Baroque period.

Ziggy & Miles Johnston share tales of mysticism and passion from the guitar. Rodrigo’s Tonadilla is redolent with the theatricality of Spanish song, while Carlo Domeniconi’s Prana draws upon Indian and Hindu spiritualism, Andrew York’s Sanzen-in traces his journey to Japan, and Francis Kleynjans’s Four Movements is a gem in the French impressionistic style. Alice’s Restaurant Tour

In 1965 a teenage Arlo Guthrie was deemed ‘not moral enough to join the army’ and recounted these events on the album Alice’s Restaurant in 1967. The ‘Alice’s Restaurant Massacree’, a partially sung comic monologue, has become a quintessential anti-establishment anthem. Folk songs only become classics when story-lines remain just as relevant today as when they were originally composed. Alice’s Restaurant is exactly that. Arlo Guthrie has become renowned as an American folk elder — a keeper of the flame — whose life of performing spans almost 60 years.

Transients

From Schumann to Glass, this concert links three European and three American composers. It presents a blended collection of cinematic piano music inspired by imagery in the natural landscape and the striving struggles of the human soul. From forest scenes to the celebration of native American Ishi’s healing song, pianist Lisa Moore conjures a lyrical journey of beauty, warmth, colour and drama.

Following the passing of esteemed mentor Allan Browne in 2015, Andrea Keller created Transients, a series of trios inspired by Browne’s musical philosophy. Dedicated to a collective approach to music making, the trios stem from a jazz tradition, which they interpret with an uninhibited, and often unconventional, Australian accent.

Anna McMichael takes her violin into unexplored territory, collaborating with composers Kate Moore, Damian Barbeler and Daniel Blinkhorn to create fascinating soundworlds. Damian Barbeler also joins Anna, performing his Piece for Violin and Ball of Wool. This is your only chance to hear the violin matched with an Arctic Ice field recording, moving electonic soundscapes and with a ball of wool used as a violin bow.

In the lead up to his 80th birthday, this concert celebrates the work of Louis Andriessen, a modern master widely regarded as today’s leading Dutch composer and a central figure in the international new music scene. Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performs works by Andriessen and some of his former students, including the world premiere of Kate Moore's Percussion Concerto, written especially for percussionist Claire Edwardes.

Decibel New Music Ensemble was founded in Western Australia in 2009. Over 70 commissioned works and 30 world premieres in Australia later, Decibel has firmly established itself as a champion of new Australian music where acoustic and electronic sounds feature side by side. This concert of works by Melbourne composers commissioned and premiered by the Ensemble is a fitting celebration of its 10th year of music-making.

Celebrating the 80th birthday of Dutch composer Louis Andriessen, pianist Ralph van Raat brings early, rarely performed works of the great master to the fore. This exclusive Australian recital also features a new piece by Andriessen written especially for Ralph for this series, with John Adams’s Phrygian Gates — which the composer calls a ‘behemoth’ — delivering a mighty conclusion through 25 minutes of rippling waves of sound.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra showcases its commitment to contemporary symphonic music. With a focus on the work of Dutch master Louis Andriessen, whose 80th birthday will be celebrated around the world later this year, the Orchestra performs his Vermeer Pictures and new works from Australian composers, including its 2018 Young Composer-in-Residence, Ade Vincent, whose piece is performed by versatile Australian artist Lior.

Discover two works by Louis Andriessen brought to life by MCM New Music Ensemble. Andriessen’s Hoketus was born out of his study of the American avant-garde movement. Star pianist David Fung joins Melbourne Chamber Orchestra for two of Bach’s sparkling keyboard concertos, and music of Dvořák, Telemann and Bartók. Alternating bustling brio and the most heartfelt lyricism, Bach’s music speaks across the centuries and his keyboard concertos mark the birth of a genre. David Fung is an ideal match for the immaculate poise and effortless dexterity these wonderful concertos require.

Ensemble Gombert opens on home territory with High Renaissance master Josquin Desprez, known in his time as ‘the Prince of Music’. It was Josquin's Mille regretz (‘A thousand regrets’) that inspired Cristóbal de Morales’s rich sixvoice Missa Mille regretz, the major work of the program. Motets by William Byrd and Carlo Gesualdo illustrate the passion and drama synonymous with late Renaissance composers.

Since its inception in 2015, The Senegambian Jazz Band has fused Afro jazz, deep world music beats and funk to create some truly awe-inspiring rhythms and melodies. With influences from Gambia, Senegal, Ethiopia, Ghana and Australia, the five-piece band share its outstanding talent and flair, channelling over eight thousand years of African musical traditions, transporting the power and beauty of these ancient sounds, rhythms and melodies to euphoric audiences across Australia.

Tim Maguire and Dorian Ford combine ambient, meditative video projections with improvised jazz for piano. Adopting a casual attitude to sound and movement, the Centre’s series of Relaxed Performances provides the same exceptional artists in the best place to hear, with an environment particularly suitable for audience members with autism, learning disabilities or sensory sensitivities. Rubiks Collective is one of Melbourne's most dynamic contemporary art music ensembles, bringing together some of Australia's most exciting and versatile young performers.

Folk music had a profound influence on the great composers, with Bartók, Liszt and Chopin all adding motifs from folk traditions into their works. Vardos gives new life to the music that inspired the masterpieces, performing gypsy-style classics on early instruments such as the threestring viola and hurdy gurdy. Discover why after two decades, this ensemble continues to garner rave reviews for its electrifying performances.

One of the finest Australian conductors of his generation Nicholas Carter directs the ANAM Orchestra in two symphonic masterpieces. It is hard not to listen in awe at the vast emotional range of Beethoven’s music. The Fourth is a symphony of breathtaking lyricism and a perfect companion to Bruckner’s sublime song of spiritual ecstasy, his own Symphony No.4. This is music which is truly knocking on heaven’s door.

Glimpse a young man brimming with confidence: Beethoven at the time of creating his first string quartets. Seventy years later, Brahms’s first string quartet is the glorious flowering of his cultivated technique and searching artistry. With a new work from young Australian composer Kate Moore, Australian String Quartet makes a most dazzling exploration of three composers’ music from a relatively young age.

In 2019 Fidelio Quartet illuminates the remaining five Quartets of its three-year Beethoven Cycle. On the eve of Beethoven’s 250th birthday, the Quartet continues its sublime musical adventure. In this concert, the Quartet offers three works from his ‘Middle Period’: two of the mighty ‘Razumovsky’ Quartets, known for their jaunty Theme Russe melodies along with a delightful Op.18 Quartet. Harts Plays Hendrix Award winning multiinstrumentalist and producer, Harts, presents a special live performance celebrating the musical legacy of Jimi Hendrix.

The reverberations of Jimi Hendrix's singular expression of history, culture and social connection endures today as a new generation thrive on his music as a source of discovery and fulfilment. That same vivid spirit of song is still heard today in Australian musician Harts. Across four successful bodies of work, Harts has garnered constant comparison to Hendrix with his expansive explorations of funk, rock, jazz, blues and psychedelia. Lisa Fischer is a powerhouse performer who can make time stand still. An unexpected star of the breakout Oscar-winning documentary Twenty Feet from Stardom (2013), Fischer joins forces with Caribbean jazz rock fusion band Grand Baton to transform soulful originals, recast rock anthems from her tours with The Rolling Stones and Tina Turner, and put her stamp on the likes of Led Zeppelin and Little Willie John.

Aventurine is a stunning new work from acclaimed bassist and composer, Linda May Han Oh. Performed by a quartet of fearless jazz improvisers (including Cuban-born pianist Fabian Almazan), Melbourne’s celebrated Flinders Quartet, and vocal ensemble Invenio led by Gian Slater, Aventurine seamlessly blends references as diverse as Cuban dance, Korean traditional rhythms and Charlie Parker. This extraordinary Australian premiere is destined to be a Jazz Festival highlight, lingering in the hearts and minds of the audience long after the final note is heard.

Curated by cyber-soul three-piece Cool Explosions, Arrhythmia is an investigation of rhythm as it exists in the world around us and within us. An exploration of the perennial primacy of pulse, Arrhythmia examines collisions of natural and technological rhythms, and the aberrations, palpitations and excitations that unfold in the process. The project seeks to examine the forces of entrainment, and upset the momentum of habitual repetitions so that something new may spring forth. Roles of rhythm — from the circadian and celestial to the accidental and urban — are re-contextualized in a contemporary experience.

It was Busoni who wrote that ‘Every notation is, in itself, the transcription of an abstract idea. The instant the pen seizes it, the idea loses its original form.’ In this intimate recital pianist Jayson Gillham explores original works and transcriptions of works by J.S. Bach and through Schumann's picturesque Forest Scenes we arrive at the crossroads of two great traditions of German Romanticism: Lied (art song) and virtuoso piano transcription.

PLEXUS heralds its newly minted choral ensemble, Vox Plexus, as guest artists for a world premiere arrangement of Stravinsky’s masterpiece Symphony of Psalms. Of the same decade, but from the opposite pole of the Soviet aesthetic sphere are drawn selections from Shostakovich’s lush Suites for Jazz Orchestra. Alongside these Russian treasures are presented two newly commissioned world premieres, by equally compelling Australian composers Leanne Bear and Scott McIntyre.

Continuo Collective celebrates the role of early plucked instruments and the improvisatory art of basso continuo. Nineteenth-century guitarist Johann Kaspar Mertz wrote a wealth of music for the Romantic guitar, in a style clearly influenced by Chopin, Schubert and Mendelssohn, yet unique from his contemporaries. Discover treasured duets for terz guitar and nine-string guitar that brilliantly capture Mertz’s splendid artistry.

The evolution of the best place to hear Maxim Boon on the spirit of community

The spirit of community

Since first opening its doors in February of 2009, the Melbourne Recital Centre has become a lightning rod for virtuoso performers and ensembles, both homegrown and from overseas. In part, this is thanks to the quality and integrity of the hall’s carefully engineered acoustics, as Ian McDougall, Founding Director of ARM Architecture, explains. ‘We gradually developed an idea about the hall, that it would not be modified. It’s a hall that has an acoustic that the musicians play to — so there’s no reflector over the stage. The hall is the hall and the musicians then play to that. And interestingly, the musicians prefer that, and they love it for that,’ he says. ‘Mary Vallentine AO [former CEO of the Melbourne Recital Centre] told me that she was getting requests from European musicians saying, ‘We’re going to be in your area next year, can we come in and play in the hall?’ And Mary would say, ‘Oh yes, where will you be?’ ‘Oh, we’re going to be in Japan.’ So that really shows you… the reputation this hall has.” Local mission, global vision But beyond the sophistication of its performance spaces, the Melbourne Recital Centre has also earned a reputation for its equally sophisticated concert-goers. ‘One of the key things that was envisaged when the Centre opened, was that it boost the whole local musical community, which is to say both performers and audiences, in a way that would bring them together and allow them to grow and develop together. And I think, quite clearly, that’s been absolutely achieved,’ says Marshall McGuire, the Centre’s Director of Programming. ‘We’ve seen not only a dramatic increase in the number of local groups but also an incredible development of audiences for those groups. And I hear this from nearly every artist who comes to the Centre, whether they’re of a local, national or global stature, that they’re so impressed by the quality of our audiences, by the way they listen, their attentiveness and enthusiasm. There’s something very special that happens in this space; we have an audience that artists really want to come back to, or indeed, come to for the first time.’

Lacey, like so many of the musicians who have shared their talents at the Centre, has formed a profoundly emotional connection to this venue; a relationship cemented over the past decade that will continue to resonate for years to come.

Building trust, fostering collaboration Perhaps one the most remarkable facets of this deep-level audience engagement is the shared confidence it has built between patrons and programmers, allowing bold, diverse, and uncompromising repertoire to feature regularly on the concert platforms of both the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall and the Centre’s chamber venue, The Primrose Potter Salon. ‘When you’re building those long term trust-based relationships with audiences, who are increasingly loyal and active, that means you’re able to take a much longer view in terms of their relationship with art,’ says pioneering recorder player and the Centre’s 2018 Artist In Residence, Genevieve Lacey. ‘And that’s an amazing thing as a performer, to know that you’re not just going to play a concert, but that this is part of a much longer conversation with that community of people. Really central to that are relationships and partnerships. The more we think, not separately, but in conversation and collaboration with other people — whether they’re chamber music partners or presenters or our audience — the more strongly it instils the sense of generosity and willingness that so many artists feel [at the Centre].’

‘ The Recital Centre is optimism, it’s hope, and it’s confidence, all made tangible. The fact that a place, a community, a society have said, We are, in the most fundamental sense, investing in building, visualising, making material, your life’s work, it is just so humbling and inspiring,’ Lacey shares. ‘It is, literally, a touchstone. I walk past it, or pass it on the tram and think, ‘Yeah, that’s our place.’ This city actually believes in the importance of our art form, and what that’s done in terms of cultural confidence within this community, is just extraordinary.’
