Behind Closed Doors

The interplay of the soloists in Bach’s Double Violin Concerto ranges from the athletic to the rapturous, making it one of the most compelling conversations in all music and a perennial audience favourite. In contrast to Bach’s intricate perfection, early-Baroque composer Biber’s vivid depiction of a battle comes complete with cannon-fire and other very special effects.

Kristian Chong Appearing regularly with many of Australia’s finest chamber ensembles, musicians and orchestras, Kristian Chong has carved out an impressive and busy concert career in Australia and abroad. Discover this talented musician in solo recital. The stern humour and wit of Haydn’s B minor Sonata is juxtaposed with the gorgeous harmonies of the seldom-performed Brahms Variations on an Original Theme No.1. Rachmaninov’s Preludes Op.32 highlight the potential for resonance and contrast at the modern piano, including Rachmaninov’s personal favourite (B minor). Concluding is Liszt’s masterful Sonata in B minor, considered to be one of the greatest works for piano and one of the most accomplished works for any instrument.

MUSIC ON THE

MIND Finding Your Singing Voice

Sweelinck to Bach What happens in the brain when we sing? Singing and speaking are our two main forms of communicating with sound, yet we still know very little about how they are related in the brain. This presentation reviews what we do know about the brain when we sing, speak or sing with words. The findings are important for understanding how the brain changes with singing training, and how we can use singing to retrain the brain to speak after injury. This talk forms part of Melbourne Recital Centre’s Music on the Mind series, which explores the relationship between music and the human brain, the related links to social wellbeing, participation, learning and development and the role of music in our contemporary communities.

INFORMATION

Mon 8 Oct 6pm Salon (no interval) Sarah Wilson (Associate Professor, University of Melbourne) speaker FREE event – bookings are recommended Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre in association with Music, Mind & Wellbeing at The University of Melbourne Music on the Mind series is proudly supported by The Ian Potter Foundation. Listen to podcasts of previous Music on the Mind sessions on our website.

In this special program, Melbourne Recital Centre’s exquisite Klop chamber organ is performed by early keyboard specialist John O’Donnell. A celebrated academic and musician, O’Donnell is a leading authority in organ and harpsichord repertoire of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. He will trace the links between the leading composers for the organ, including Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Samuel Scheidt, Dietrich Buxtehude through to Johann Pachelbel and J.S. Bach, performing works which we believe to be intended as pure entertainment, rather than for liturgical purposes.

Australian Voices:

Landscapes for a Mind’s Eye

Andrew Schultz

Pianist/composer Gemma Turvey launches her eagerly-awaited album, Landscapes for a Mind’s Eye, with her chamber ensemble, the New Palm Court Orchestra. The Orchestra is a natural extension of Turvey’s jazz piano trio work, bringing to life the evocative, cinematic qualities inherent in her music. Palm court orchestras were popular in the 1920s and 30s for playing light instrumental music in an intimate setting. The New Palm Court Orchestra injects this seductive format with a new and fresh vitality. This concert will also feature guest soloists including Craig Beard (vibraphone), Luke Moller (violin) and singers from Ensemble Gombert.

‘ Some of the most touching music I have heard in an Australian work.’ Sydney Morning Herald Pianist Stephen Emmerson directs this kaleidoscopic program of chamber and solo works by the highly acclaimed Australian composer, Andrew Schultz. Drawing upon a broad range of influences, from both his European and American training as well as themes more distinctly Australian, Schultz’s music exhibits great diversity and range of expression.

At just 24 years old, HAHN-BIN is already a force to be reckoned with in the classical world, having mesmerised seasoned veterans and younger audiences alike with his virtuoso violin performances. His credentials are impeccable; a long-time protégé of Itzhak Perlman at the prestigious Juilliard School, the Korean-American prodigy made an acclaimed international debut at the Grammy Awards at the tender age of 12. Edgy and charismatic, with a theatrical flair, HAHN-BIN has all the verve of a contemporary pop icon, while maintaining an unwavering reverence for the classical canon. The Minotaur Trilogy Melbourne’s Chamber Made Opera brings us an exquisite mythological meltdown – an epic journey into a new kind of opera. The enfant terrible of Australia’s contemporary opera scene, Chamber Made Opera has built a reputation for wild, subversive takes on the conventional opera format. This renegade company casts its decidedly unorthodox gaze over ancient Greek legend with The Minotaur Trilogy, an opera told over three suitably epic chapters. Taking its inspiration from Monteverdi’s famous lost opera – of which the celebrated Lamento d’Arianna is the only fragment that remains – this work finds the ageless story of thwarted love, misplaced heroism and tragic human failings twisted, inverted and collapsed, a strange new mythology conjured from a familiar tale. Margaret Cameron and David Young’s unexpected and daring score, a composition of image, text, found sounds and Baroque instruments, forms a work of intimacy and extravagance – a hallucinatory retelling that teeters on the edge of ecstasy and oblivion.

O From the seeds of tragedy comes a powerful new fusion of samples, orchestral music and Brazilian rhythms, created by one of Australia’s most innovative composers. A young American man was shot dead on the eve of his 30th birthday in May 2007, after intervening in an attempted mugging in the party district of Lapa in Rio de Janeiro. The gunman was an off-duty police officer and the event shone a light on Brazil’s epidemic of police violence. Tamil Rogeon, one of the visionaries behind the cut-up jazz brilliance of Melbourne’s The Raah Project, takes this story as a framework for a stunning new work – a sweeping, cinematic amalgam of samba, beats, brass, woodwinds and strings. Part concert, oratorio, DJ set and hip-hop collage, 24 Hours in Lapa channels a disparate mix of sounds into a singular concoction, an energetic sonic fusion tracing the contours of a young man’s final hours. Backed by acclaimed singer Krystle Warren and Australia’s foremost Brazilian guitarist, Doug de Vries, 24 Hours in Lapa is both an inspired new blend of musical traditions and a fiery meditation on the themes of vice, impetuosity and extinguished youth.

Quasi Una Fantasia

From his beginnings as an anti-Thatcher, folk-punk agitator, through to his elevation to pop poet laureate of the political left, Bragg has remained one of the most inspired and committed songwriters and musicians of his generation. This solo performance sees him play a set of classics from his 12 studio albums, mixing it up with his trademark wry humour and wordplay. Join us at the barricades once more for an irreverent, rowdy and affecting show from a man who has defined the sound of modern protest music.

Grand provocateurs of Australia’s contemporary classical scene, Melbourne’s Speak Percussion take us on an inspired sonic voyage through the possibilities of keyboard music. Speak Percussion have spent the last decade rerouting, deconstructing and altogether shattering our preconceptions of what Classical music can be. From canonical works turned inside out to controversial new compositions that merge choreography, architecture, dining and design, Speak is one of the most consistently innovative ensembles in Australia today. Now, with Quasi Una Fantasia (Almost a Fantasy), Speak sets its sights firmly on the foundation point of the Western tradition itself. In a playful program that is part conceptual exploration, part reverential tribute to the infinite possibilities of the keyboard, Quasi Una Fantasia showcases this most familiar of instruments in ways you’ve never heard before.

Pierrot lunaire One of the 20th century’s most revolutionary compositions. One of Melbourne’s finest music collectives. A dream like journey into imagination’s abyss. One hundred years on from its revolutionary premiere, Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire (Moonstruck Pierrot) has lost none of its bewitching, subversive power. A grim, mischievous creation whose transgressive theatricality has influenced everyone from Stravinsky to Björk, Pierrot lunaire was Schoenberg’s early masterpiece, a synthesis of the Symbolist poetry of Albert Giraud and Schoenberg’s own experiments in atonality and aural texture. Together these two forces conjure a decadent cabaret for the damned. Pierrot, the clown of legend, traversing a landscape of strange and unsettling visions, the music surrounding him, haunted and unhinged. Performed by Melbourne’s exhilarating new music collective, Syzygy Ensemble, soprano Merlyn Quaife and pianist Andrea Katz

of Songmakers Australia, with choreography by Phillip Adams of BalletLab, this is the culmination of a year-long tribute to Schoenberg’s masterwork – a celebration of this most definitive of modern compositions, and a chance to experience first-hand the majestic, diabolical music that inspired an age.

Both just 28 years old, piano virtuosos Yaron Kohlberg and Bishara Haroni are the pre-eminent pianists of their generation in their respective homelands: Israel and Palestine. For the past four years they have performed together as Duo Amal, their finesse and energy taking them to some of the world’s most prestigious auditoriums, from the Beijing Concert Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall to the legendary Beethovenhalle in Bonn. Whether playing two grand pianos nestled together or sharing the same keyboard, Kohlberg and Haroni create a music that rises above the national barriers that would see them pushed apart. Across a wide-ranging repertoire, their pieces sweep from masters through to the new breed of Israeli and Palestinian composers, exploring the myriad sounds and possibilities afforded

Beautiful Minds

Australian Brandenburg Orchestra Beautiful Minds celebrates the music of Mozart and Mendelssohn. Melbourne musician Craig Hill performs Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Concerto and Brandenburg favourite Madeleine Easton returns from London to bring to life Mozart’s dramatic third Violin Concerto. The Brandenburg concludes the concert with a rousing performance of Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture.

Latitude 37 (Julia Fredersdorff, violin, Laura Vaughan, viola da gamba and lirone and Donald Nicolson, harpsichord and organ) finds musical beauty amid the political embers of the Holy Roman Empire at the end of the 30 Years’ War in 1648 in some of the most haunting German music you may never have heard. The program features works by Buxtehude, Erlebach, Froberger and Schmelzer.

A Phoenix for Ferdinand III

Bang on a Can All-Stars

Elizabeth Sellars & Marshall McGuire Violin and harp make a slightly unusual combination, but a warm and beautiful one. Elizabeth Sellars and Marshall McGuire are the ideal performers for this richly coloured and utterly charming program. France in the 19th and 20th centuries was a wonderful place for harpists: an outpouring of technical and musical innovation for the instrument captured the imagination of composers such as Hasselmans and Saint-Saëns. Bach’s violin sonata is transformed with harp accompaniment while Melbourne composer Stuart Greenbaum’s Nine Candles for Dark Nights makes an evocative centrepiece for the year’s final concert.

Bang on a Can has been a vital force in American music for 25 years. Somewhere between a rock band, jazz combo and a classical ensemble, the new-music mavericks borrow freely from every musical tradition, with a sound that’s impossible to categorise but utterly unmistakable. Composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe created the first Bang on a Can Marathon concert in 1987 in order to break down the barriers that separate musical communities. Their idea was simple: instead of sorting music by style, genre, or venue it would be more powerful to group music by innovation, finding the rebels in each musical community, the restless creators not content to leave conventions unchallenged. The Bang on a Can All-Stars, a permanent ensemble formed in 1992, pursue this mission year-round, astonishing audiences worldwide and shattering the definition of what concert music is today. What would happen if today’s genre-blurring composers went into the field and brought back sounds to challenge their own music? The answer is Field Recordings, nine new compositions especially for the Bang on a Can All-Stars by Tyondal Braxton, Christian Marclay (video artist and creator of the astonishing 24-hour film, The Clock), Nick Zammuto, Mira Calix, Florent Ghys, Evan Ziporyn, Michael Gordon, David Lang (Pulitzer Prize-winner) and Julia Wolfe. Using film, found sounds and archival audio and video, Field Recordings builds a bridge between the seen and the unseen, the present and the absent, between today and the past. The brilliant acoustic rendering of Eno’s electronic ambient music masterpiece Music for Airports is the signature Bang on a Can All-Stars experience. Eno’s music layers gentle loops of tinkling pianos, wordless choir and synthesisers to create music that is both tranquil and transitory. Bang on a Can has transcribed Music for Airports for a large ensemble and choir, breathing a human warmth into Eno’s slightly chilly soundscapes, and yielding perhaps the definitive version of the gorgeously uneventful epic. The All-Stars’ performance of this work at festivals, concert halls and airports world-wide has been acclaimed as fascinating and deeply moving.

The Genius & The Goddess

Chronicling one of the great love stories in Classical music, the tumultuous relationship of Robert and Clara is reflected in Huxley’s stage play The Genius and the Goddess. Clara Schumann’s only chamber music work highlights this gifted and daring woman’s creativity. Spring Bouquet A colourful mix of musical genres is not unfamiliar for Duo Chamber Melange. Benda’s classical symmetry, Beethoven’s ever-popular Spring Sonata, and some rarely-heard chamber music of Shostakovich are the main pillars of this musically-diverse concert. In this recital, Duo Chamber Melange teams-up with inspiring, internationallyrenowned violinist Elizabeth Sellars. The program demonstrates the group’s professionalism as they swing the pendulum from amiable music from the late 18th to 20th century energy that only Shostakovich could produce.

A petite Buddhist nun from Nepal, Ani Choying Drolma has enchanted audiences from Hamburg to Hong Kong with the vivid purity of her mantras and songs. Acclaimed as ‘one of the finest singers of her generation living in the Himalayas’ (NVA – UK), Ani Choying Drolma presents a sublime blend of ancient and modern in a program of Tibetan Buddhist chants and traditional songs for her debut in Australia. From the age of 13, Ani Choying Drolma was trained in the sacred chants at Nagi Gompa in the Kathmandu valley of Nepal, having joined the monastery to escape an abusive father. There she learned to forgive and found a remarkable talent. The power of her voice draws on a complex mix of devotion, confidence and raw emotion to present a rare musical treat that is authentic and straight from the heart. Magnificent and contemplative, haunting, simple and surreal – this is music that will usher you into another world.

With three albums, ripped jeans and black tulle, up and coming composer and pianist, Emili Rackemann (piano) is certainly the definition of slightly quirky and sonically classical. Born and raised on a cattle station, Emili is simply a delightful balance of storytelling versus new age authenticity. If you love the sound of Rachmaninov and the visuals of Tim Burton, you will be captivated by Rackemann’s sheer creativity and musicality.

A Schumann Celebration

Trio Anima Mundi

Transcription & Innovation

Amanda McBroom

Bach’s deeply moving masterpiece for solo violin, the Chaconne from D minor Partita arranged for Piano Trio forms the centrepiece of this program. It is matched in impact by a transcription of another extraordinary giant from the Western Music canon, Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night. The seductive and honeyed lyricism of Glinka’s Piano Trio links these two works and leads into a highlight of Trio Anima Mundi’s annual Concert Series – the premiere performance of the winning work from the 2012 Trio Anima Mundi Composition Prize.

Jack Liebeck has established himself as one of the most compelling violinists on the concert platform today, performing concertos recently with such orchestras as the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic and English Chamber Orchestra. In this Schumann celebration, Jack joins Melbourne musicians Howard Penny, Kristian Chong and Simon Oswell to perform two of Schumann’s greatest chamber works, his Piano Quartet and Piano Quintet. Although Schumann started composing the Quartet only a few days after completing the Quintet, the two works could not be more different; the (slightly) later work is actually the more traditional, especially in Schumann’s use of counterpoint. Assistant Leader of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Victoria Sayles, joins the ensemble for the Quintet in what promises to be a thrilling performance. INFORMATION

Gyan and Leunig are joined on stage by a sensational nine-piece band featuring some of Australia’s best jazz musicians, including Simon Barker (Vince Jones Band), Lloyd Swanton (The Necks), Sam Keevers and Cleis Pearce, complemented by Gyan’s hand-picked string and woodwind ensemble made up of some of the finest classical musicians around. The live show of the CD and book, Billy the Rabbit, has already won a Sydney Theatre Award for performances at the Sydney Opera House. Discover the wonder of this ‘unforgettable night of music from the soul’ (The Sunday Mail).

With the coming together of two of Australia’s greatest and most well-loved cultural icons, the final concert of our 2012 Australian Voices series sees violinist and pedagogue William Hennessy direct a program of exciting and surprisingly adventurous works by the doyenne of Australian composers, Miriam Hyde. Well known and loved for her pedagogical compositions by generations of Australian music students, Hyde’s concert works exhibit a rare virtuosity and level of refinement which sees them stand very much on an equal footing with many of the great works of the standard repertoire.

Ship to Shore features the extraordinary talents of the Grigoryan Brothers and The Song Company in a spirited performance for the end of the year. The brothers Grigoryan are stellar performers. Seamlessly crossing the boundaries of classical and popular guitar styles, they are the perfect collaborators for this rollicking, swashbuckling program of shanties and songs about the sea. From the coast of Newfoundland to the shores of Ireland and from the ports of Portugal to the sundrenched beaches of Brazil, the men that laboured on the tall ships were expected to sing. Back home, the women left behind found their own expression for loss and longing. This concert contains some of the most memorable sea shanties written as well as adaptations of classic sea songs.

The concentrated power of Brahms is the perfect prelude to Shostakovich’s rare masterpiece on poems by Alexander Blok. Blue Grassy Knoll meets Buster Keaton, silent film’s great comic genius. A five-star hit of the Edinburgh Festival, Blue Grassy Knoll’s unique live accompaniment to silent films has taken the group to five continents, including seasons on Broadway and London’s Southbank, and tours from Beijing to Brazil, South Africa and everywhere in between. Blue Grassy Knoll returns with a brand new score to Buster’s hilarious short film, The Goat, as well as the side-splitting antics of The Boat and The Playhouse.

Exciting young pianist Peter de Jager presents a solo recital that explores music and words. Melbourne Recital Centre’s Salon provides the perfect environment for an intimate journey that plumbs the heights and depths of human emotion. From the architectural spirituality of the great Chaconne of J.S. Garrick Ohlsson

Brahms Quintet Brahms’ piano music spans his entire creative life. In the mighty Variations and Fugue of 1861, he takes a theme from a Handel Keyboard suite and fashions from it a powerful piano panorama. The Two Rhapsodies, which he created nearly 20 years later, are among his most lyrical works for the instrument, while the masterful Quintet, a work which took Brahms many years to complete, is a landmark in the history of chamber music – bold, passionate and written on a grand scale.

Miloš Karadaglic´ Debut Australian Tour

‘ Innate poise and elegance that makes you sit up and listen.’ The Times Experience a new elegance, intimacy and energy on the guitar as young virtuoso, Miloš Karadaglic´, comes to Melbourne on his highly anticipated debut Australian tour. With critically acclaimed performances around Europe and North America (including a sell-out recital at Carnegie Hall), two Gramophone Awards, and an album debuting at number 1 in the US, UK and Australia, Milos has quickly emerged as the champion for a new generation of classical virtuosi. From the war-torn Montenegro of his youth to London’s Royal Academy of Music, the 28-year-old is already hailed by fans and critics for his brilliant technique and transcendent musicality, and is the first classical guitarist signed to the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label in many years. With an inspiring program, including works by Bach, Barrios, Villa Lobos, Albeniz, Theodorakis and Domeniconi, this young talent brings a new light and emotion to his humble instrument. INFORMATION

Sat 1 Dec 8pm Elisabeth Murdoch Hall Miloš Karadaglic´ guitar Tickets $75 ($65 concession & $59 child) Presented by Andrew McKinnon

O Solitude

The Continuo Collective During his exile in France, Charles II was greatly influenced by the music of the court of Louis XIV. Upon his return to England, he encouraged new music in this style. Henry Purcell seized the opportunity to modernize English art song and dramatic music, and in doing so became one of the most loved and admired composers of English song of all time. Designed to accompany the solo voice, the theorbo is the perfect vehicle to transport you back to the 17th century; a time of exploration into the extremes of human emotion in song. Performed by mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell and Samantha Cohen on theorbo.

On Loop Famous for its original and unexpected collaborations, Ensemble Offspring brings turntablist Martin Ng together with worldrenowned Scottish accordionist James Crabb to create an evening of low and hi-fi blips, beats and loops. The coarse and fragile voice of a tramp is transformed into an uplifting statement of colour and hope in Gavin Bryars’ classic Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet. On Loop also features Bernhard Lang, an Austrian composer taking Europe by storm with his distinctive voice which mashes hard-edged Modernism and Minimalism with a touch of prog-rock and jazz thrown in. Ensemble Offspring also welcomes to our shores turntable fanatics and composers Matthew Wright and Cor Fuhler with their new works for all seven players reflecting Sydney's vibrancy and mayhem. Italian Opera Master Class Concert

Geoffrey Lancaster plays Haydn, Beethoven & CPE Bach

Wilma & Friends #3

Geoffrey Lancaster returns to continue his enlightened exploration of works from the Classical period on Melbourne Recital Centre’s beautiful McNulty fortepiano (a forerunner of the modern piano). Geoffrey’s ‘blend of scholarly wisdom and impeccable musicianship’ (Sydney Morning Herald) brings to life the emotionally and harmonically turbulent music of CPE Bach, two of Haydn’s late sonatas which perfectly demonstrate the composer’s improvisatory approach, and one of Beethoven’s early sonatas: its sunny good humour is indebted to his teacher, ‘Papa’ Haydn himself. Geoffrey’s performance celebrates the innovation of these Classical composers, performing these works in the spirit of their time and as their original audiences would have enjoyed them.

Some of Australia’s most gifted young opera singers, fresh from the Acclaim Italian Opera Fellowship Awards and International Master Class Series, will perform the world’s most beloved arias. A special guest performance will be given by Valeria Esposito, one of Europe’s most sought after sopranos (Cardiff Singer of the World, La Scala, Wiener Statsoper). A night of Italian passion and drama to savour for a lifetime.
