Established in early 2017, the Melbourne Women in Film Festival (MWFF) is the first nationally focused, competitive women’s film festival in Melbourne. MWFF has launched itself onto the Melbourne cultural scene through a mini-festival held in March 2017, exhibiting works by Australian women filmmakers and creatives and showcasing the diversity of women’s perspectives through storytelling and conversation.
Our goal is to provide a space and opportunities for film creatives to exhibit their work to diverse Melbourne audiences. Further, we aim to advocate for gender equality in the Victorian and Australian screen industries, provide opportunities for dialogue and engagement between women working in film, the Australian screen industry and audiences, provide opportunities for emerging filmmakers to exhibit their work, and of course...entertain!

Why sponsor us? In Australian feature film production, women account for 33% of the producers, 15% of the directors and 23% of the writers.[i] Lack of opportunity in production and exhibition is a known factor in this imbalance. Yet, at the same time, there is a high demand within the community for greater access to women’s stories on screen. All of the data emerging on audiences shows that women buy more than 50% of all movie tickets and women 35-plus is one of the only demographics that continues to grow worldwide at a time when cinema audience numbers are trending downwards.[ii] Evidence also indicates these filmgoers want to view more stories about women. Unfortunately, less than 25% of all films in the mainstream market
are about women or have female protagonists. Audiences are also often missing out on women’s work in areas such as shorts, documentary, experimental film and new online formats. MWFF provides diverse groups of women filmmakers with an opportunity to exhibit their work in a nationally competitive film festival. At the same time, MWFF will engage Melbourne’s film loving public, women and men, hungry for more screen stories about women. As a sponsor of MWFF, you and your business have a remarkable opportunity to be aligned with a festival devoted to the promotion of gender equality in the screen and cultural industries.
