As we celebrate Chinese New Year, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Australia I would like to extend my warm congratulations to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for the successful hosting of the 12th Chinese New Year Concert. I also wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to the artists from both China and Australia performing tonight. May you all enjoy good fortune and success in the Year of the Snake! Over the years, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has successfully hosted 12 Chinese New Year concerts, using music as a bridge to beautifully showcase the blending of Eastern and Western cultures, providing audiences with refined artistic enjoyment while contributing to the development of Australia’s multicultural society. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr David Li for his longstanding efforts in promoting musical collaboration between China and Australia, and offer my highest respect to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for its significant contribution to the friendship between our two nations. This evening’s concert continues the tradition of integrating Chinese and Western styles, with artists from both countries performing a selection of classical pieces from China and around the world. Welcome Welcome to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s 2025 Chinese New Year Concert. This year the MSO proudly celebrates the 12th anniversary of our annual Chinese New Year’s Concert series—a musical milestone we are delighted to share with you. On behalf of the MSO Board, musicians, and staff, I hope you enjoy tonight’s performance as we usher in the Year of the Wood Snake. Last year, Chinese New Year celebrations were officially recognised as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This designation highlights the cultural significance of this traditional festival and its contribution to humanity’s shared cultural heritage. Our 2025 Chinese New Year program includes enchanting repertoire by GRAMMY nominated Chinese-American composer Zhou Tian and renowned Shaanxi film composer Zhao Jiping. These excellent works will be performed alongside beloved Western masterpieces by Beethoven and Strauss, and work by esteemed Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin. Our talented musicians will be led by the Chief Conductor of the China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, Lü Jia, internationally acclaimed pianist Haochen Zhang and prominent Chinese Pipa virtuoso Zhang Hongyan.

Acknowledging Country In the first project of its kind in Australia, the MSO has developed a musical Acknowledgment of Country with music composed by Yorta Yorta composer Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO, featuring Indigenous languages from across Victoria. Generously supported by Helen Macpherson Smith Trust and the Commonwealth Government through the Australian National Commission for UNESCO, the MSO is working in partnership with Short Black Opera and Indigenous language custodians who are generously sharing their cultural knowledge. The Acknowledgement of Country allows us to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which we perform in the language of that country and in the orchestral language of music.
About Long Time Living Here As a Yorta Yorta/Yuin composer the responsibility I carry to assist the MSO in delivering a respectful acknowledgement of country is a privilege which I take very seriously. I have a duty of care to my ancestors and to the ancestors on whose land the MSO works and performs. Born into a musical family in Shanghai, Lü Jia studied piano, cello, and later conducting at Beijing’s Central Conservatory under Zheng Xiaoying. At 24, he continued his studies in Berlin with Hans-Martin Rabenstein and Robert Wolf. In 1989, he won first prize and jury’s prize at the Antonio Pedrotti International Conducting Competition in Italy, launching his conducting career.
Since his gold medal win at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009, Haochen Zhang has captivated audiences in the United States, Europe, and Asia with a unique combination of deep musical sensitivity, fearless imagination, and spectacular virtuosity.
Lü Jia is Artistic Director of Music at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and Music Director of the China NCPA Orchestra. He also directs the Macao Orchestra and previously led the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted major orchestras worldwide, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and Chicago Symphony.
Highlights of this season include his recital debut at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, tours with the Munich and Hong Kong philharmonics, and reengagements with The Philadelphia Orchestra and Melbourne Symphony. Haochen was appointed as Artist-in-Residence at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. Haochen records exclusively for BIS Records. His most recent albums include a recording with The Philadelphia Orchestra of the complete Beethoven concerti and a solo album of Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes. Haochen is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he studied under Gary Graffman. He was previously trained at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music where he studied with Professor Dan Zhaoyi.

Zhang Hongyan pipa Zhang Hongyan, a prominent Chinese Pipa virtuoso and educator, is a Level II professor, a PhD supervisor, and a member of the Academic Committee at the Central Conservatory of Music. Zhang currently serves as the dean of the Department of Traditional Chinese Music Instruments and director of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection and Research Center at the Central Conservatory of Music. Zhang is the Vice Chairperson of the Pipa Society of China Musicians Association and a former visiting scholar at Columbia University in the United States. Zhang is also a disseminator of music culture, promoting music in Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Oceania. Zhang is a keen and devoted public music educator. She launched her “Playing Whilst Talking” lecture concert series in 2008 and offered free lectures on music culture for ten years, promoting the cause of social music education and contributing to the development of Chinese folk music.
章红艳 琵琶 章红艳是中国著名琵琶演奏家及教育家,现任中央音乐学院中 国传统乐器系主任,兼任国家级非物质文化遗产保护与研究中 心负责人、中央音乐学院学术委员会成员,以及中国音乐家协会 琵琶学会副会长,也曾任美国哥伦比亚大学访问学者。她致力 于音乐推广,将音乐的美好传播至亚洲、欧洲、美洲、非洲和大 洋洲各地。 作为一位具有热忱的公众音乐教育家,章红艳于2008年开始 了“且弹且谈”音乐会,并在十年间举办了多场免费音乐文化 讲座,积极推动社会音乐教育,为中国民乐的传承和发展作出 了重要贡献。

Program Notes Zhou Tian (b. 1981) Gift The composer writes: I consider Gift something of a homecoming. As I began a residency with the Shanghai Symphony, I wanted to create a reminder of the joy of music making, and along the way explore my own musical identity after 18 years of living abroad. The title, Gift (礼献), came from a poem titled Music as a Gift of Decency by Shen Yue from the Northern and Southern dynasties (ca. 400).
Beethoven’s experimental quest reaches its apotheosis in the middle movement. The mood is operatic. Specifically, the high drama of recitative obligé, where voice and accompaniment stand in sharp contrast—the string accompaniment severe and emphatic, the voice (or, in this case, the piano) cantabile and expressive. To accentuate further the difference between the two, Beethoven instructs the pianist to utilise the soft pedal (una corda) throughout.
The piece is shaped around a folky 4-note motif, which rises and falls against a large orchestral palette throughout its 10-minute duration. In a nutshell, this is my gift to fellow musicians.
The middle movement segues into the very fast rondo finale, Vivace, which opens with a soft, drumming gesture on the strings building to a ten-bar theme. Taken up and elaborated by the piano, the theme then assumes its full military colours when trumpets and timpani (silent in the first two movements) ring out in the fortissimo orchestral tutti. A secondary theme offers a moment of hymn-like stasis but the mood is overwhelmingly joyous with scintillating piano figuration and a race to the finish for soloist and orchestra.

Die Fledermaus: Overture Johann Strauss II is known mainly as a composer of waltzes. He wrote some 300, and The Blue Danube and the Emperor Waltz are among his best-loved pieces to this day.

Two of his operettas still hold the stage—Die Fledermaus (The Bat) and Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron).
Of Beethoven’s five piano concertos, the Concerto No.4, which was completed in 1806, is the most experimental. It is as though Beethoven had decided to take the concerto apart and put it back together a different way. Conventions are overturned. Expectations are thwarted.
It is said to have been Offenbach who suggested to Strauss that he should write an operetta. A first attempt, The Merry Wives of Windsor, was abandoned when one of the leading singers withdrew; another, Indigo and the Forty Thieves, enjoyed success at the time.
Take, for instance, the way it opens—with a brief meditation for the solo instrument. This was a first. Seemingly simple, the opening five bars offer rich interpretative possibilities. A full G major chord in the piano’s middle register (marked soft and ‘dolce’, sweetly) is followed by a further series of chords which harmonise a stepwise melody (which will soon be given fuller treatment in the orchestra) leading to a rhythmic ‘bump’ (an unexpected accent on the second beat of the bar) which in turn leads to a decorated, but unemphatic, cadence on the dominant. Thus ends the brief opening solo, and the piano now disappears for the better part of 70 bars. But the opening solo with its odd, five-bar shape and rhythmic quirks proves to be the germinating seed of the movement’s principal theme, and one of the motifs derived from it—a two-note falling figure, traditionally held to be a musical ‘sigh’— pervades much of the musical argument. The piano makes its second entry almost as an aside. It arrives with none of the fanfare and dramatic preparation traditionally afforded the solo instrument but, rather, softly makes its presence known with some gentle musings on the principal theme. In fact, the piano exerts a light touch throughout much of the movement and partakes in a remarkable amount of surface decoration. This is not a concerto where the soloist seeks to bend the orchestra to its will; on the contrary, the solo piano cajoles, caresses and teases out the seemingly endless decorative possibilities of the thematic material. A word has to be said on Beethoven’s tonal adventurousness. His key choices are often surprising, beginning with B major in bar six (the orchestra’s initial entry). Elsewhere, we encounter important themes presented in keys some distance from our home base of G: B flat major, E flat major and, strangest of all, C sharp minor.
However, friends suggested that the missing ingredient in all these early efforts was a suitable libretto. Perhaps this was the reason why the Viennese impresario, Steiner, bought for Strauss, sight unseen, a libretto entitled Die Fledermaus, written by Offenbach’s librettists Meilhac and Halévy. When he eventually read it, however, Steiner was disappointed with his purchase—a costume drama set in Paris on Christmas Eve. Nevertheless the publisher Gustav Levy suggested it could be adapted for German taste. The resultant adaptation, by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée, so delighted Strauss that he was inspired to write in only 43 days a work which has become the epitome of Viennese operetta. From the moment the overture begins it is a score which captures not only the giddy hedonism of contemporary society but an excellently drawn cast of characters. The famous Fledermaus waltz: `Happy is he who forgets that which cannot be changed’ could almost be taken as a motto for Strauss’ life itself!

The composer writes: In 2012 I was approached by pipa virtuoso Wu Man to write a concerto. Having known and admired Wu Man for many years, I was immediately taken by the prospect and, in fact, had been wanting to write something that could feature her incredible artistry. This is my second concerto for pipa, an instrument that resonates so closely to my heart. Wu Man has a unique perspective on the interpretation of music, particularly on the integration of eastern sounds with western ensembles. I see this piece not so much as a traditional concerto, but more an exploration of poetic expression of thoughts and emotions, able to stimulate many levels of the audience’s imagination. A few years ago, I was fortunate to hear a concert of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (the lead commissioner for this concerto) and was immediately struck by the virtuosity of the musicians. With that sound in mind my goal is to create a pipa concerto with a strong Chinese flavour combined with global musical language sense. The movements represent various expressions in different textures and tempos, inspired by the most elegant Chinese traditional music style, Ping Tang (评弹), from Wu Man’s hometown in the Su Hong (苏杭) area. I am confident that this powerful collaboration will touch a new light!

When I was about to start writing Momentum, everything in the world had come to a standstill owing to the inescapable pandemic. I found myself at my piano in Coogee, Sydney, wondering what would happen next for the world in general and music in particular. It seemed to me that momentum had stopped. There was a part of me that thought of it as a blank canvas. In a way I had nothing to do but everything to do. I still had works to write even though I did not know when or even whether they would ever be played. I started to look back at some of my earlier pieces, doing some revisions, making some arrangements, but I also felt compelled to write a piece or part of a piece every day. Those daily imaginings led me to what has become the basis of this fanfare, some kind of a music urgency, something that wanted to be kickstarted, to be born and to propel itself into the future. There is a pressing pulse in this work that includes certain recurring elements of my music, such as rag, clusters, dance, major versus minor harmonies. Brass and percussion have prominent roles in the most ‘fanfare-like’ moments. Ultimately what I was trying to do with this piece is write a musical ‘pick me up’ if that is at all possible. 那时我在悉尼的库吉,坐在钢琴前思考着世界与音乐文 化未来的发展。对我而言,那种感觉就像动力突然停下 了一样。
2012年,琵琶演奏家吴曼邀请我创作一首协奏曲。我们相 识多年,我也非常敬佩她,因此欣然答应,并决定创作一首 能够展现她才华的作品。琵琶一直是与我内心紧密共鸣的 乐器,这也是我创作的第二首琵琶协奏曲。 吴曼在音乐诠释上独具匠心,特别是在东方乐声与西方 交响乐方面。对我而言,这首曲子并非传统意义上的协奏 曲,更像是一种诗意的表达方式,用以探索情感和想法, 激发观众多层次的想象。 几年前,我有幸观看了这首协奏曲的主要委约方——悉尼 交响乐团的一场演出,对乐团音乐家的精湛技艺感到由衷 赞叹。有鉴于那次演出,这首曲子的创作目标便是谱写一 首能够将中国传统音乐风格与全球音乐元素巧妙融合的 琵琶协奏曲。灵感来源于最优雅的中国传统音乐风格,源 于吴曼故乡苏杭的评弹,各乐章通过不同的织体和节奏表 达出多样的情绪。我对这首融合中西特色的作品充满信 心,它将会激发出全新的想象!
正当我开始创作《动力》时,世界因疫情而陷入停滞。

His great legacy, the East meets West program, has reached over 240 million people globally since its inception in 2014.
