Viking or Dwarven Beard

This pattern explains the process I used to make a beard to attach to an already completed hat. On each side of the beard are 2 button holes (to allow for changing sizes).

You should not have paid anything to use the instructions below. All I ask is that credit be given to me (Melissa Campbell/MelCam) or my etsy shop (http:// www.etsy.com/shop/melcam1126) if the product of this pattern is being listed anywhere.

Supplies needed: F hook, one skein of worsted weight yarn, yarn threader Gauge: 7 HDC stitches = 1.5 in; 5 rows of HDC = 1.5 in Yarn used in this tutorial was Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn!” in color “Brown” for Beard, and color “Greybeard” for Braid Rings

Abbreviations used (US terms) CH: SC: HDC: SL ST: TR:

chain single crochet half double crochet slip stich triple crochet (aka “treble crochet”)

Beard base CH 77 R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, SC 76 across R2: CH 2, turn, HDC 1, [CH 2, skip 2 stitches, HDC] 2 times, HDC 23, SL ST 16 (pull tight), HDC 24, [CH 2, skip 2 stitches, HDC] 2 times (should look like Fig. 1 below) R3: CH 1, turn, SL ST 26†, CH 4, TR 4, CH 16, TR 5 (Fig. 2) R4: CH 2, turn, HDC 25† R5: CH 1, turn, SL ST across to end (sl st down the TR st), tie off (Fig. 3)

To tie in the yarn for the beard, make tassels along the top and bottom (Fig 4a, 4b, 4c) of the beard base according to how you want your beard to look. I used 3 strands of yarn for the top tassels and 2 for the bottom. If you want your beard to be thicker, add tassels sideways in between the top and bottom tassels. I cut longer strands for the chin area of the beard. To put braids on, I used a yarn threader to sew them in so they’re secure (Fig 5).

Braid rings (use same color yarn used to make your hat)

Small CH 8 (leave tail 4+ inches long for tying) R1: In 2nd ch from hook, SC across R2: CH 1, SL ST across and pull tail through beginning ch loop Cut tail 4+ inches long, use tails to tie around braid (Fig. 6)

† Stitch into one loop only on the chain stitches

Sew your buttons on to your hat accordingly to hang the beard on.
