Have you ever stumbled upon street art before? While on your way to school, strolling through the city, or by just walking around your neighbourhood? Did it make you curious? Upset? Passive? Hopeful? Street art is a medium for artists and rebels alike to visibly convey what they want to say to the world; in fact, “the world” (being the built urban environment) is their canvas. This book will examine various works of street art that I have come across in the Montreal area, from places like the Plateau to Notre-Dame-De-Grâce, along with the streets they were found on and nearest metro stations (should you ever want to discover them yourself). While the very act of street art is often debated as a crime, many look to it as positive art; a little injection of hope in humanity, a little cry that shows that society is being affected by something, an exposure of suppressed feelings and opinion. Some even call it social advertising. So perhaps the next time you run into some street art, pause and think, “maybe this is trying to tell me something” and you might see things differently. 3
