main concept
treeπio is a building.
or, even better,
an open,
public,
so,
what is treeπio? (treeπιο< trēpio)
it is an intervention in a building.
in order to become, green,
and ludic vertical space.
location
treeπio is located in Thessaloniki, Greece, in the area of Ano Ladadika, which is part of the city centre. more specifically, treeπio is situated at the junction of the streets Tsimiski 1 & Katouni.
current situation we had to deal with a large abandoned shell, like a lot of others in the centre of the city, which is considered as an ugly carcass that nobody wants to interact with. this made us wonder, how could architecture transform this carcass into a vertical public space full of joy and vividness.
why so serious?
at the same time, the bui both concerning the floor was considered as a challenge in terms of breaking
ilding’s rigid structure, r plan and the facades, for further experimentation this ‘seriousness’.
we transplant life into the shell,
to create moments
life
in order to design the vertical public space, we first analyzed the organization of the public space as we already know it, in the ground level. Through this analysis we concluded to three basic elements: the squares, the connecting routes and the subareas. By rotating these elements 90 degrees on the three dimensional space, we already had the spacial organization of treeπιο.
finally, treeπio consists of:
the main square which constitutes the main core of treeπιο
the routes that enable moving around the floors
the subareas where several things may happen
converse
interact play exersice
gather
isolate party

the shell
first things first. a public space needs a square, round of which, the public life evolves.

crossing the whole building, it does not split the space but rather unifies it.

the no-design design as the focus of our design
lies on experience design within public space, our desire is to give people the opportunity of spontaneous
use of public space, that may produce multiple experiences.
in the belief that the more the uses of a space are,
defined
the fewer freedom
is left to the user, we design spatial constructions
without any specific or predetermined use.
we imagine treeπio as a
creative & playable public space where different things can happen at any time.
Finally, this gives rise to various small ideas that enrich the interior of the building and shape its final organization:
