FOREWORD This portfolio captures the work done in Year 2 Semester 2, under the topic of ‘Form Follows Performance’. As quoted from the design brief:

“In current discussions about reduction of greenhouse emissions not only energy needed for operating a building is important but embodied energy in form of building materials and circularity regarding manufacturing of materials and end of life. Here adaptive re-use of existing structures and retrofitting them to enhance the buildings performance to use less energy during operations is one of the strategies. Tearing down a building and replacing it with a “better” one would cause even more waste in addition to new construction materials and energy required for the replacement. Façade design is one of the key factors where examples in form of SDE1 or Engineering E4 on NUS campus can be observed how existing structures got transformed for changing requirements in usage and improved energy performance. Furthermore, over the past two years students were often living and working in solitude at their homes and might have become more aware what strain it poses as well how it affects performance and well-being due to sub-optimal working environments. As architects, we all spend a lot of time at desks, hence the most important spaces for us are our workplaces. Therefore, Unit 1 is about how to transform our workplace environment via adaptive and kinetic façades to make them more comfortable and livable while reducing energy consumption by the means of passive climatic design strategies.” (Unit 1, Performative Perforations, 2022)

TASK 01 OBSERVE AND M EASURE DIFFERENT CLIM ATIC CONDITIONS WITHIN SINGAPORE [ WEEK 1-2]

“If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it.” (Lord Kelvin) Humans are aware if they feel too hot and instinctively seek shelter to shade them from the sun’s heat. However, when it comes to formulating climatic design parameters for façade systems and buildings, one needs the knowledge and tools how to design in response to a given climate to improve indoor comfort in a natural way which does not cost additional energy. Passive climatic design strategies for tropical regions are essential. However, not only the knowledge and application of those design strategies are required but also the explicit knowledge about the physical quantities like temperature or airflow (or the lack thereof) when for instance warm starts to feel too hot. Part of the exercise of Task 01 is to transform implicit knowledge and corelate it with explicit knowledge by the means of measurements. In order to achieve that, students are required to measure their current workplace but also to set out and start measuring their environment during various atmospheric conditions and times of the day, document it and pair it with qualitative descriptions. This should enable to students to express what they sense and tie it to actual numbers. Therefore, students should acquire an Anemometer and a Lux Meter which can be obtained cheaply from online vendors. Both should have built in thermometers and the latter can be used to estimate solar radiation.

TASK 02 SYNTHESISE THE FINDINGS, DEVELOP AND DESIGN A KINETIC RETROFIT FAÇADE SYSTEM [ WEEK 2-8]

Students will develop a kinetic façade system for one office unit (around 3mx3mx2.5m) which enhances the workspace in several ways keeping Task 03 in mind. The façade prototype should be kinetically transforming and adapt towards changes in requirements from interior conditions or external design parameters such as different sun angles during the day and course of the year. During the design process there will be conflicts in terms of performance, and it is part of the student’s journey how to solve them. For instance, an increasement of airflow and view might lead to a sub-optimal performance of how to prevent solar heat gains. Preventing solar heat gains might reduce daylighting and general visibility inside but also view to the outside. There is no silver bullet and students need to learn how to prioritize the various design parameters versus each other. Each student team will build a System Box in scale 1:5 of their office unit (around 60cmx60cmx50cm) where different façades can be attached & detached, measured and explored. Trough an iterative design process students will develop a kinetic facade system by producing several façade prototypes via design exploration, design iteration, measurements and feedback loop with the same tools they used for task 01, fine tuning until they arrive at their final design which is informed by performative design parameters. The materials used for the work in progress models and prototypes should remain simple, ecological responsible and affordable, however it is important that those materials are carefully chosen according to properties like reflection (specular, spread, diffuse), albedo, etc.

TASK 03 APPLY THE KINETIC FACADE SYSTEM [ WEEK 9-11]

Students will showcase how their prototype could potentially be applied on a larger scale on a multi-storey car park at an HDB. Under the premise of turning Singapore into a carfree city enabled by better pedestrian, cycling and public transportation facilities those buildings are going to be underutilized. Via adaptive reuse car parks could be transformed into working spaces like small office units, co-working or maker spaces. By designing those spaces, students need to be aware of the design challenges like possible depth of unit in relation to floor to floor height and daylighting but also cross ventilation and indoor comfort in general. The students further need to propose not only the facades but show a design strategy how the whole building can be transformed programmatically also in terms of unit layout. There also needs to be awareness and a conscious choice of façade orientation in relation to previously developed façade system at Task 02 and whether it works generally with all orientations or is bound to a limited range.
