Competitions projects
New look for Sappada PLODN Competition for the redesign of the urban furniture of Sappada, 1st prize This project comes from a competition held by the municipality of Sappada to revise some elements of the town’s street furniture. If we consider the enormous tourist importance that Sappada has assumed over time throughout the Triveneto and beyond, we can understand how the search for a widespread quality, which starting from the naturalistic context extends to the architectural one up to every single element of public space, is of fundamental importance. Starting from this consideration, which sees inextricably linked, to form a unit of extraordinary value, the historical-naturalistic-architectural context of Sappada, we have developed our intervention strategy to meet the demands of this competition, namely to rethink the design for a welcome system, a bus stop and information facilities. The recent picturesque, faux-rustic evolutions, which in the name of the so-called “alpine style” have created a grotesque pastiche incorporating all the stereotypes of the mountain imaginary, seem out of place. Our architectural proposal originates instead from the observation of the simple elements of Sappada’s vernacular architecture, the “Ciokl” stone basement, the “Bont” load-bearing wooden structure, the “Pirl” trellises of the balconies, the ventilation holes of the barns, the slope of the roof pitches that seem

to challenge the white profiles of ount Geu and ount Siera. These elements, as well as their constituent materials, wood and stone, were then reworked in a contemporary language that would bring out the minimalism of spontaneous architecture, the purity of its forms and the essential, almost severe, character of Sappadas artifacts. The response to the need for integration with the context, but at the same time of recognizability of the intervention has spurred us in the search for current technological solutions while using traditional materials, in the creation of simple architecture that recalls the local building tradition, although born with different functional needs. ith this in mind have been conceived the designs of the various artifacts that, although different in appearance, size and function, appear generated by this precise idea of departure that characterizes and unites them, generating an intervention attentive to sustainability, economy, the relationship with the existing and architectural uality.

Museum of Chocolate Competition to design a chocolate museum for Turin, 3rd prize The project was born mainly to satisfy two needs: to provide the city of Turin with a museum of chocolate, and to be able to redevelop an area that is still very degraded even though it is the fulcrum of important city institutional buildings. The architectural genesis of the building started from the idea of connoting the museum with a strong iconic value. Starting from a chocolate bar, and through a process of decomposition and modification of its modules, was born a building characterized by a strong dynamism of the main front that looks like a massive volume oating on a completely transparent volume able to allow a complete permeability with the public space in front. The ground oor of the museum houses the laboratories and the caf , while on the upper oor we find the auditorium with a capacity of one hundred seats and the various rooms of the museum. The space in front of the entrance on the long front is a square, conceived as a meeting place capable of hosting museum installations or activities for children.

The salt pavilion A sailing center for Cagliariri Italy saw continuous economic development during the period between the 1930s and 1970s, except for the Great War. This situation, totally Italian, led to the birth of parabolic vaulted warehouses from the north to the south of the country. These buildings are the extraordinary result of the balance between aesthetics and functionalism in the industrial part of the Modern Architecture Movement. Architects such as Nervi and Morandi created 85 of these buildings in Italy. To date there have been few examples of restoration of these architectures. The most interesting work involves the two Montecatini warehouses in Assisi. The redevelopment project of the former salt warehouse in Cagliari, focuses on the theme of urban enhancement through the recovery of a building that is one of the most characteristic elements of the city itself. The recovery of this portion of anthropized territory is fundamental in the process of urban regeneration implemented by the municipal administration to initiate actions of social and economic redemption, mainly in the district of Sant’Elia. The salt warehouse was built between 1956 and 1958 for Saline di Stato following all the technical and archiarchi tectural principles of Nervi’s parabolic vault. In recent times, this splendid building has been the object of ever renewed interest on the part of both public institutions and citizens. The Municipality of Cagliari, having identified its strategic location, has placed the warehouse at the center of the revitalization and redevelopment program of the waterfront, with the aim of raising the city to the cornerstone of the Mediterranean tourist system. This redevelopment project aims at the creation of a new focal point in the urban waterfront that is a candidate as a “privileged door” of the naturalistic system of the salt pans. It would be a new landmark identifying the city, born from the transformation of a former working area, now abandoned and degraded.

MASTERPLAN
It is important to underline that the former salt warehouse is inserted in an area of contact between two realities that have always been separated: the ancient city and the Sant Elia district. The latter is confined in a situation of isolation, due to the lack of connective tissue with the rest of the city. This condition leads to the need for urban regeneration to improve the livability in the neighborhood and along the coast. The redevelopment of the old salt warehouse considers the condition of these two realities, so close, but so far from each other for their social and economic problems. This project was developed considering the connection with the port of the city to which it belongs. Its purpose is to bring benefits to the urban waterfront and restore natural contacts with the city and the port area. Natural contacts with the city and the port area, lost due to customs seal systems. Therefore, the warehouse will be surrounded by a network of paths to ensure continuity to the different territorial systems, focusing on the waterfront as an element of urban regeneration. These “giants” now emptied of all the inert materials they contained, offer large indoor spaces that can accommodate new open activities to improve tourism and the tertiary sector. This project starts from the idea of grafting a new centrality in the urban waterfront, with many activities related to water sports and sailing. It will be a new “house of the sea” inserted in a strategic urban node to support the reconnection of three different portions of the territory, separated by the water lines that have driven the development of the city of Cagliari.

The tree houses A new landmark for Turinari The area of this project is located in the city of Turin, currently occupied by railway station of Porta Nuova and its links to railway stations of Porta Susa and Lingotto. In a attempt to create an environment that connected neighborhoods of San Salvario and Crocetta, the masterplan has been developed to safeguard the city planning without maintaining building density of the surrounding areas. How to indulge the mending of urban fabric? How to connect two neighborhoods even though so much unoccupied space? Creating a urban park was the sanest and intelligent choice, but was necessary relate to pre-existances and the railway tracks. In the project area there are many buildings that served railroads, now mostly disused or adapted for different fuctions; not all could safeguarded, not all had to be demolited. Have been preserveded only buildings that could play a important role in the masterplan. Once decided which buildings saving and demolishing, were two alternatives to go on: keeping historical urban pattern of Turin, or thinking newone consistent with surrounding area. Therefore, it was chosen the second option and is designed a new pattern whit fuctions differents from framework, but linked to surrounding areas. In this new pattern has been included new clusters connected by a long cycle-pedestrian boulevard that runs through the masterplan. This one was fragmented so that each segment act as a vector to focus attention on highlights of the project like university or sport centre. To complete the area, were designed three towers to give the masterplan new landmarks, “Tree Houses”. These ones are part of Turin’skyline, breathing new life in this area where had sat in cold neglect for far too long. The towers are changeable throughout the year thanks to colour change of trees’crown. The locals live in wide light apartments and they have a wide range of activities in close proximity.

The green kilometer A new life for Nichelino’s wood The site of this project is located in Nichelino, a municipality situated in the first urban ring of Turin. Even though Nichelino is in contact with the southern side of Turin, it is still separated from the latter due to the presence of natural barriers; the first of these is the Sangone river that physically separates the two cities. Downstream of the river there is currently a situation of degradation due to the absence of urban organization and good planning that has generated many social problems. For this reason, the project has taken the opportunity to redevelop the riverfront and the areas near it. The objectives to be achieved were twofold: to reconnect Nichelino to the Sangone river and to make the latter become a new link with the city of Turin. Given the large extension of the area, two macro-actions were planned: - on the one hand, an economically sustainable approach was chosen, including measures to exploit all the unused potential of Nichelino. In particular, in the green area a mini-hydroelectric network and a renewable energy center have been designed and reorganized with new paths; - in the second area, a different approach has been chosen, involving the recovery of unused buildings. Here the focus has been on sustainable cultivation, where people have the opportunity to learn about agricultural practices or purchase greenhouse products.
