his architecture told by Ş. Vanlı
A R C H I
Şevki Vanlı: «In 1950s, Vedat Dalokay applied an architecture based on his rational, internationally applied ideas. For some reason, in the end of 1960s he abonded this approach. His 1950s architecture of Kocatepe Mosque was an example of his rational ideas and the symbol of contemporary vs. traditional dilemma. However, late examples like Islamabat Mosque seems much more contemporary.»

Vedat Dalokay was the architect who won Kocatepe Mosque Competition in 1957. Vedat Dalokay and Nejat Tekelioğlu started to prepare structure projects after the competition. The problem exist when it come to roof part. Dalokay’s studies continued about the roof. However, there were some problems. The government changed and of course the director of the association who were building this mosque was also changed. Tercüman Newspaper: Ayasofya has to be a mosque! Vedat Dalokay supports the idea of it becoming a museum; but his thoughts were misquoted. It was claimed that Dalokay suggested Ayasofya to become a church and the heads of the ones who says it should be a mosque has to sabered with Fatih’s sword. Those kind of bad propogandas about Vedat Dalokay affected the destiny of Kocatepe Mosque. In the end, Vedat Dalokay’s Kocatepe Mosque was thrown to bin and the foundations of the structure was blown with dynamites.

Maruf Önal: Vedat had problems with the roof. He went to Spain and asked advices from well-known engineers; but it didn’t work out as well. We were the ones who won the second prize in the competition. According to competition rules, first prize winner can use ideas from the second prize project. Our idea about the roof was to have shell structure… Vedat took our shell structure idea; but he couldn’t manage to solve its structure as well.

an Ankara Dream far far away
When you were in Paris, a cardpost was sent to you. It has a photo of two swam, one white and other black, strangled together with love. It resembled me the swam which Vedat Dalokay brought to Kuğulu Park: Ankara and Vienna. Quoting from Yaşar Sökmensüer… «When Dalokay brings the swam, government aspires from him and want one swam in Gençlik Park. Female swam, Ankara, is taken to Gençlik Park. Vienna cries days and days, missing Ankara. And one day it flies. It flies from Assembly building to Ulus square. On such a snowy day, it lands on Gençlik Park. And it rejoins with his Ankara.»

Hakan Dalokay: «Vedat Dalokay wanted to make Atatürk Boulevard wider. The road was completely enlarged. The only thing that was missing was the wall of American Embassy. One morning, bulldozer destroyed the wall of the embassy. That was a crisis. Governor made a request for unseating Vedat Dalokay. In the end, they said the demolishment of the wall was only mistake and built the wall one meter inside.»
Hakan Dalokay: «Vedat Dalokay worked for water solutions for Ankara. He made many dwelling projects. What is more, he rejected the idea of having a mall under Kızılay, in case there will be a metro station in the future.»

Kızılay Square, Ankara Public Meeting of DP Adnan Menderes asks to protestors, «What do you want?» In a sudden, Vedat Dalokay grabs Menderes’s collar and shouts, «We want freedom!» Menderes answers him calmly, «You can grab the prime minister’s collar, how come you can ask for more freedom than that?»

For this part of the story there is a Vedat Dalokay known as RPP (CHP) member, mayor of Ankara. These three events reflect his politician identity. He embraced Ankara as a capital city, as he is a politican. What is more, he cared about the people of the city. He was more than a politican, one can say.
31 July 1975: The mayor of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, Vedat Dalokay, protests Nationalist Front (MC) Government with 3 day hunger strike, as they ended aids for metropolitan municiplaities. 1 October 1976: Minister of Internal Affairs (member of Nationalist Front Government), Korkut Ă–zal, discharged Vedat Dalokay from his duty. Dalokay took legal action. 7 October 1976: Council of State cancels the decision by Minister of International Affairs.
