Dorothea’s Garden Academic Work - Landscape

Telling a narrative through landscape design, this sketch for Dorothea’s Garden is based on a central character from George Eliot’s masterpiece novel Middlemarch, but is also a metaphor for my own path to architecture. My path started with a summer course in architecture, then took me through a rewarding study of philosophy and mathematics, to education, and finally back to architecture. The overarching theme of my own story, and that of the novel, is an individual’s search for the good. With design I believe I have found the place where I will do the most good. The first section represents Dorothea, her interests in architecture and philosophy. The water and paths intersect and loop around each other to form a dynamic composition. The central panel is the smallest, representing the short period of time in which Dorothea is the wife of the pedantic Edward Casaubon. The final panel shows her life a major change, where she experiences a totally new freedom, shown through the path winding to the top of the hill. As the path moves up it goes through a dense grove of trees that gives way to a protected space with views over the distant landscape. The walls and grove of trees at the summit of the hill protect her and frame her views out to a new life.

Clara St Home Workshop Single Family Residence

Entitlement Phase. Work completed as designer at RG-Architecture This single family residential project is an addition of two floors to existing warehouse space in SoMa, with approximately 2000 sq ft of new living space. Mission Collage

52-unit Mixed Use Development Entitlement Phase. Work completed as designer at RG-Architecture . Located on Valencia Street, the design of this infill development includes four commercial spaces along the busy Valencia Street and ground floor residences on the opposite street with the more residential scale. The papel picado motif is carried through from the elevations and construction of the bays to the fence details on the ground floor.

Work completed as designer at RG-Architecture This 5-story, 16 unit building maximizes residential area on the site by providing ground floor residential units and no parking. Our work included everything from project management, to sourcing and installation, to custom furniture and casework design. Recycled, found, natural, and environmentally friendly materials were an important part of our work in creating personalized interiors.

Playground for Portland Re-Imagining Centennial Mills Designed with Kathryn LaNasa The complex of flour mill and warehouse buildings on the Centennial Mills site near Portland’s dynamic Pearl District called for an imaginative vision of adaptive reuse. Its historic water tower and mill complex, and prime location at one end of the Willamette River Greenway Trail already make it an icon for the city. The redesign must be place both to preserve the cultural landscape and to re-imagine contemporary public space. The Playground for Portland has a unified conceptual development connecting the urban and building scale. A pedestrian bridge over a busy parkway leads from a large existing park to the second floor retail and cultural spaces to a terraced roof garden on top of the historic warehouses overlooking the river. Steps down through the elevated green space lead you to the on grade waterfront park, south-facing lawn and amphitheater. Mixed-use facilities for cultural, commercial and public use frame the public green space. An industrial brownfield is transformed into a place for people, a cultural and commercial landmark, while creating natural habitats and eco-diversity. The new landmark anchors the revitalizes urban waterfront and finds the delicate balance between open space, commercial viability, and historic preservation and reuse. 12

Insertion The Fremont Bridge is the culmination of the series of the downtown Portland bridges. The pedestrian bridge to the Playground for Portland inserts visitors visually into this backdrop and connects the vibrant urban fabric to the river scene.

Reciprocity Part of the beauty, challenge, and responsibility of urban projects is that pulling one thread undeniably affects and is affected by the context. Our interventions create long lasting impressions and have effects, both positive and negative, that we may not have foreseen.

Threshold The threshold to Centennial Mills must be porous on two sides, allowing visitors in from the city and giving them free access to leisure along the river. Solidity gives way to porosity, edges define entries.

The site called for a green public space to crown the series of public parks in the Pearl District.

The mill’s place in Portland’s history called for its reuse to celebrate history while making it an active part of the modern, growing city.

The south edge of the design allows for a variety of ways for pedestrian and car traffic to enter.

High vantage points provide long views over Portland’s many bridges. The middle level gives access to the warehouse shops. The lowest level accommodates the Greenway Trail and provides the public with unobstructed access to the river.

Greenway Trail

Vehicle traffic is limited to loop that leads into the semi-underground parking garage. The design provides a place for cars but makes the majority of the site a pedestrian-dominated space.

Portland’s existing Greenway Trail is a place for pedestrians, bicyclists, and runners, bringing plenty of foot traffic to the retail and cultural amenities at ACADEMIC WORK 17 Centennial Mills.


Urban Groves

Bootstrapping Urban Design for Springfield, Oregon Designed with Jessica Benner and Frances Morales

Seasonal Streets Streets will be planted with trees that have distinct seasonal profiles, giving a special character to each street throughout the year.

A strong character and identity is vital to supporting and encouraging future development along Main Street and the surrounding areas in Springfield, Oregon. Two new public plazas give definition to downtown and create nodes of separate activities that will support each other’s growth. Mixed use development and mixed-income housing provide the experience of “living above the store.” The “Urban Groves” design uses landscaping features to create a unique pedestrian experience, bringing the characteristic Pacific Northwest trees into the urban experience. A seasonally distinct tree canopy connects the already vibrant City Hall and Public Library to the new “Spring Square,” along Main Street, and through to the riverside “Mill Plaza” and existing public park.

Pedestrian Streets The green “Urban Grove” connects the civic area around Spring Square and City Hall with the developing Main Street and future Mill Plaza near the river. Blue shows major car traffic streets and yellow indicates a major bicycle route.

Since Springfield’s Main Street is along a major state highway it is important to create a sense of entry into the downtown and to create special nodes along the way.

Phase 1: Spring Square This public space builds on a framework for a variety of outdoor activities, including a community garden, farmer’s market, seating for a library café, and eating lunch outdoors. Spring Square would be the first move in the city’s revitalization of the downtown, building on the success of the already lively City Hall and Public Library.

Plans for a new library were in the works, and it was important to support both the existing and proposed nearby amenities. Vendors will set up underneath a new covered outdoor structure and build on the success of Sprout, the existing and rapidly expanding food hub.

Public art, an architectural folly, and small lawns provide a variety of experiences and venues at Mill Plaza.

The street canopy of Main Street gives way to the urban grove that is the south edge of the plaza. The green connection continues through to the existing riverside Island Park and to proposed residential and mixed use spaces.

With the redevelopment of Mill Plaza, retail and commercial spaces surround a public plaza that is a venue for cultural activities and is a beacon for visitors entering the city.

Potrero Gardens Human Scale Living in Urban Density 16th & Mississippi St, San Francisco

Located at the intersection of several distinct urban neighborhoods in San Francisco, Potrero Gardens is a blend of the high-rise urban development to the north and the more traditional Victorian homes to the south. Housing is provided for a variety of family types, with live-work spaces integrated into each building. Special care was taken with the site plan and landscape design in order to create a park like experience at the core of the site and give every unit easy access to the outdoors. A mixed-use community center and retail spaces on the north side of the site connect to the transit corridor and other developing mixed use. Materials from the existing warehouse buildings are reused as cladding on the new development, blending the new development with the industrial character of the neighborhood.

Veterans Village

History Supports Community in Emerson, New Jersey Phase 1 of HUD Innovation In Affordable Housing Student Design & Planning Competition Designed with Kathryn LaNasa and Nataly Rojas The design of the Peter DeBaun Veteran Village is predicated on four core principles that are related to the goals of environmental sustainability, affordability, accessibility and durability. We sought a substantive connection to community through history through the use of the historic house, but also through a design of new buildings that respect the existing house without simply imitating its style. The site plan provides a spatial and botanical variety of outdoor spaces with occasions for active and passive use and accessibility for all. We designed for a balance of privacy and interaction, acknowledging that a strong community needs to make space for both autonomy and community. Most essentially, we design to create a Sense of Place at all scales, from the clarity of entrance at the individual dwelling, to the image of the entry at the historic house, integrating sustainable design strategies throughout. 30

Ship in a Sagebrush Sea Place for People in the Landscape Malheur Wildlife Refuge Field Station The wide plain in the high desert around the Field Station at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge called for a built environment that would provide a strong sense of arrival, an anchor in the expansiveness of the high desert of eastern Oregon. Buildings should frame the views and provide human scale within the vast landscape. Southern exposure is maximized in this design, providing unobstructed views and good solar access during the winter months. The Field Station serves as the home base for field biologists, artists, and amateur birdwatchers and is flexible enough to accommodate the variety of program. It is a place for group gatherings and private rest in the mornings and evenings, but is quiet during the day as visitors explore the wildlife refuge.

Welcoming Beacon The existing field station had a confusing entry sequence. The site, miles from other human activity, called for a clear and welcoming building form.

Detailing a Zero Energy Building Inspired by the work of Traverso-Vighy Architecture, this project has a thick enclosure system with a thickness of 15 to 18 inches. Aluminum plates on the interior reflect daylight deep into the space. The exterior is finished with wood on the underside and sheet metal on the other exposed surfaces. A suspended porch is carried by steel girders and custom steel shapes. An oriel window with glass on three sides projects through the volume.

Garden of St. Anne This collage was inspired by a text from the Byzantine era that describes the Garden of St. Anne. It shows Anne, who will become the mother of the Virgin Mary, weeping in her garden, a space for solitude and renewal. It references the sounds and appearance of the landmark fountain in the center of the garden. The columns and carving on the fountain in the lower left corner is a blend of the interior and exterior worlds. The ground is covered in a floral carpet whose garden images show the link between built architecture and the garden, between St. Anne’s inner life of grief and her desire to move beyond it and find solace in the garden.
