Design Intent
D
esign plays an essential role in my life, to the core of my very being, in the way I see the world, and the existence of possibility everywhere I look. Every step of my day is rooted in the belief that design is thinking made visual. To design is to solve a problem, to offer a solution to a challenge, however simple or complex that challenge may be. As an interior designer, I take pride in leaving an impact. To better the well-being of others through a design and turn a concept into a reality is to create something worthwhile.

Restaurant Design Project Challenge: Using a floorplan from the second floor of the Anchor Bank building, design a restaurant that meets the client’s vision and gives users an experience. The restaurant is located on Caroll Street, just off of the capitol square in downtown Madison. The objective is to create a space that brings vitality back to the side street that has long been lacking the vitality it needs.

Design Solution: Given that the client, Andrew and Emily McCormick, wanted a barbecue smokehouse, I chose to give them a modern, industrial twist on a smokehouse with the same southern authenticity and warmth throughout materials, finishes, and lighting. The design solution provided well-zone spaces of public, private, and semi-private seating. The main dining room is open and and inviting, while the bar is intimate and social, with bi-fold windows that open up to the exterior to provide great access between the outside and inside during the warm months, and providing a good view during the cold. Biophilia was incorporated as a nod to the fresh local ingredients Slate Smokehouse serves, enhancing the urban industrial space and appealing to the young to middle-aged demographic.

Project Challenge: Design a co-working facility located on the capitol square in downtown Madison on the 10th floor of the Anchor Bank Building. Design a space that inspires modern-day workers from a broad spectrum of career fields to effectively achieve their goals.
Open Office Collaboration / Studio
Design Solution: To achieve an invigorating environment, the office incorporates subtle elements of nature and greenery. With an abundance of natural lighting, no individual will feel enclosed or uninspired. The refreshing color palette stimulates the mind and promotes success. Here, every worker is apart of a collaborative community that makes one look forward to coming to the office.

Design Solution: A donut “bar”, which offers guests a unique bakery experience. Zoned to provide private, semi-private, and public seating areas for a variety of uses and desires the guest may have. The donut bar is a modern spin on classical elements and provides its guest with a conversational, social experience not often associated with traditional bakeries.
