ANNUAL MEMBERS MEETING All members of the Maryland Hereford Association are invited to the annual meeting, held in early December, which consists of a social hour, dinner, and reporting on the past year’s events. This meeting also provides a forum to discuss and vote on important topics and annual board of directors’ and officers’ selection. BOARD MEETINGS Elected board members and officers meet throughout the year to discuss and plan events that will promote and educate about Maryland Hereford cattle. Members are always welcome to attend. NEWSLETTERS Newsletters are mailed after each board meeting. They include news, events, and the minutes from the recent Board Meeting to keep members up to date. BREED SHOWS The Maryland Hereford Breeders Show is held in conjunction with the Maryland State Fair Open Hereford Show. JUNIOR PROGRAM The MJHA program is open to any person up to the age of 22, who owns, manages, or is associated with Hereford cattle. MJHA meets throughout the year to work together and learn from each other and their advisors about Hereford cattle, showing and promoting Maryland Herefords. The Maryland Junior program sponsors the Junior Preview Show typically held the weekend of the second Sunday of May each year. Maryland Juniors can also travel to and compete in the Junior National Hereford Expo. This is held in July and is co-sponsored by the American Hereford Association and affiliated junior and state Hereford Associa6

tions. MHA shows its support to the juniors by participating in their fundraisers. AWARDS PROGRAM The MHA sponsors an awards program. Awards are supplied to the county and state 4-H shows for the champion Hereford heifers and steers. The MHA also provides awards for the State Breeders Show. Monetary donations are made to several youth programs within the region such as judging competitions and jackpot shows each year. HEREFORD BREEDERS CUP The Maryland Hereford Breeders Cup recognizes our Maryland Hereford Breeders. To be eligible for this program, the animals must be Maryland bred, born, and solely owned and exhibited by residents of Maryland. Breeder-owned animals are eligible (you do not need to sell the animal for it to be eligible for this program). Animals are nominated for the program by the owners or breeders and are entered by paying a nomination fee. The champions are chosen at designated shows and where the nomination money is awarded to the champion and reserve champion. The Breeders Cup steer champions are awarded at the Preview Show and the Breeders Cup heifer champions are awarded at the Maryland State Fair Open Hereford Show. CELEBRATE MARYLAND SALE The Celebrate Maryland Sale is a member hosted consignment sale that is traditionally held on the third Saturday of May. This annual sale features purebred cow-calf pairs, bulls, fall breds, spring and fall open heifers, embryos, and semen. All breeding animals in the sale are nominated in January and handpicked for the sale in February. Any member can nominate to consign to the sale.

letter

Fellow Hereford Breeders and Enthusiasts, Enclosed in this directory you will find a wealth of information about the Maryland Hereford Association and our members along with the many programs and events we support. I hope it will provide you with some insight into our organization. Feel free to reach out and engage with our members, they are always willing to support their fellow producers and are a great resource. You will also find information for a multitude of businesses that support our agricultural community and association. We hope that you will consider patronage to these businesses if the need for their services arise. As we enter a new decade the landscape of the agricultural community and cattle production both large and small is ever changing. Maryland producers are passionate and evolve with these changes to produce cattle that exceed the market expectations in both the commercial cattle market and in show stock. Our producers participate in supplying the regional consumer beef market as well providing seed stock nationally for fellow cattle breeders. Additionally, our show stock producers are recognized nationally and take pride in offering their best. Big events for the association include an annual production sale, state breeders show and an annual dinner. The Celebrate Maryland Sale is held in May and is a show case of some of the cattle that Maryland has to offer. Cattle are sold across the country and is a main event for the association. The state breeders show is another opportunity to see the quality of cattle raised in Maryland. The highly coveted Top Maryland Breeder and Top Exhibitor awards are presented at this show. Additionally, The Maryland Breeders Cup is a futurity offered for Maryland bred, raised and owned cattle. We believe in our future cattle producers here in Maryland by supporting a large and active junior program with donations and we provide awards for all Maryland 4-H programs offering Hereford divisions each year. The association also supports other youth programs such as judging competitions and jackpot shows. The association is led by a board of directors which meets quarterly and publishes a newsletter to keep members apprised of current events. We are always looking for new members or volunteers to help at the many events we support. Please reach out to me, or any board member with inquiries. We would be glad to answer any questions you many have. Sincerely,

Tina Poole

ALL CATTLE BRED, BORN, AND MAINTAINED IN MARYLAND ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS NEW PROGRAM!

Nomination fee of $50 is due by the show entry deadline. All nomination money will be split 2/3 to the champion and 1/3 to the reserve champion. The steer champions will be selected at the Preview Show and the heifer champions will be selected at the Maryland State Fair Open Hereford Show.

RULES • Animals must be Maryland bred, born, and solely owned and exhibited by residents of the state of Maryland. Breeder owned animals are eligible (you do not need to sell the animal for it to be eligible for the Maryland Hereford Breeders Cup). • Animals must be maintained in the state of Maryland; provided, however, that such animals shall be permitted out of state for a maximum period of 90 days for the purpose of showing, exhibition, or embryo transplant. • Animals must be registered with the American Hereford Association proving that it was bred and born in Maryland and showing current ownership of a Maryland resident. • Animals must be entered in their respective show and will be shown in the appropriate age/weight class or division during the show. A championship drive will be held for those ranking in the top of their class/division to determine a Champion & Reserve. • Animals can be nominated by the breeder or new owner. Person nominating must be a member in good standing of the Maryland Hereford Association or Maryland Junior Hereford Association. TO LEARN MORE, VISIT WWW.MARYLANDHEREFORD.COM/ MARYLAND-BREEDERS-CUP
